Church of
“S. Maria del
Borgo”
he town was founded in 663 A.D. In 1238 Frederick II built a castle on the remains of a Norman or
Roman fortress. During the centuries it was dominated by the Normans, Swabians and Angevins. In
the Renaissance, thanks to a political stability, there was the development of a rich agricultural bourgeoisie. The city is rich in churches and archaeological remains and is worth a visit for its natural beauty
of its territory partly wild and partly designed by man.
Church of “San Giorgio”
C
hurch of “San Giorgio”: It is the most ancient
church. Behind the altar, there is a well with a
bucket of copper. According to a legend, whoever
could pull up the bucket from the well filled with
water without making a drop during the ascent, could
formulate a grace that would be answered.
C
hurch of “Santa Maria del Borgo”: It
was built in 1573 and in 1688 was partially destroyed by an earthquake, nowadays it
has been rebuilt. Inside the Church there are
the statues of the Saints, patrons of San Nicandro.

a preta scritta: (The written stone) located on the side of the road to the sea, it
brings a Latin inscription that says, “Tired man have a rest, the
street looks at the road travelled”. Perhaps it was written to support the travellers as they walked down the road to the city.

from San Nicandro, the karstic
dolina called Pozzatina is one of the largest in Europe. On the bottom, there is a
cultivated very fertile land with a central

into which flowed all the water coming
from the steep slopes of the valley.

Sebastiano” (January 20) and “S. Biagio” (February 3) are lit in
the streets and squares in front of the churches where there are
the statues of the saints. Around bonfires people celebrate singing,
dancing and eating.
October fair is on 1st, 2nd and 3rd October and it attracts a lot of
people from neighbouring towns. Carnival involves everybody: men,

“I fav rummunnat’”
“U pan’ cott’”
“
“
U pan’ cott’:
it’s a very simple dish but very appreciated. Back in the past it was served in a single terracotta or tin dish placed at the
centre of the table and all the family could eat it using hands or a cane fork. It is a dish that can be cooked all over the year simply by
changing the vegetables. Ingredients: vegetables (turnips, chicory, courgettes etc…) stale bread, potatoes, some tomatoes, uncooked onion.
Fav’ rummunnat’:
In the past this dish was cooked in a terracotta pot placed on the edge of the fireplace early in the morning, it was
cooked on a slow but steady fire until it became a smooth and soft puree which was poured on pasta. Ingredients: dried shelled broad beans,
onion, tomatoes, olive oil.

“U Cunciurtin’”
D
uring the carnival musicians and people wearing masks form “u cunciurtin” (little concert). They gather in
the main squares singing and playing typical
instruments such as castanets, tambourines,
accordions, guitars and mandolins surrounded by merry people. They also represent stories in the local dialect.
“Pastor e pacchiana”
The “tarantella” was danced on the occasion
of the engagement between the “pastor”
and the “pacchiana” to seal their promise of
love.
La tarantella
The traditional costume “la Pacchiana”
dates back to 1700 and was used as a wedding dress until 1930. The skirt is black with
very thick folds, and it is bordered by coloured bands for the lower class and golden
bands for the upper class. It also brings a
large white apron and “u cutredd” (shawl) on
the shoulders.
“Facit’li ballà sti duij uagliul,

Quann’ m’nzor’ ij’ ch’ bella festa caia fa

he agricultural economy is mainly based on local products which are
also exported to Europe.
Among the products you can find tomato, also called “red gold” which
is used to make sauce and peeled tomatoes; grapes used to produce an excellent local wine; olives for the exceptional extra virgin olive oil in great
demand for its organoleptic properties; sunflowers and large grain crops
that enrich the country's economy.
