Parent Resources
The college years represent a unique stage of parenting, one that offers
new rewards as you see your student take the next steps in his or her life,
as well as new challenges as you face questions and concerns you have
never faced before. At LMU, we provide you with a link to a community
of parents providing support, ideas, and resources as families negotiate
their ‘revised’ parenting role during the college experience. As a current
member of this community of parents, we encourage you to get involved
during your son or daughter’s four years at LMU and beyond.
Parent Pride: Parent Pride is LMU’s online
resource for First Year Parents. Parent
Pride features helpful articles, resourceful
tips, and other online tools that aid parents
during their student’s first year at LMU.
Articles address how to adjust to college
life, how to successfully navigate the first
year, ways to get involved, and much
more! As the parent of a first year student,
if your student provided your e-mail in the
parent information section, then you will
Welcome to LMU
Dear Parents,
Welcome to our LMU family! Your journey
is steeped in great history, both our
Jesuit and Marymount traditions, setting
the foundation to connect with LMU.
We hope that you will see how we create
an environment of academic, personal,
spiritual and professional growth. At
LMU, your student is challenged to grow
through their interactions in the classroom
and co-curricular experiences. We are
privileged to be a part of their journey as
they strive to become the best version of
themselves, each given the opportunity
to learn about their gifts and talents
and how to use them in the world.
We encourage you to empower your
student to deal with the challenges
they will face during their college
years. The best way to help your
student is to encourage them to use
all resources available to them at LMU,

opportunity to interact with faculty
and staff as a rewarding experience.
We understand this year will be filled
with many changes for both you and
your student, but you are not alone as
you find a way to “let go” of your student
during this first year. We are here to
answer questions and provide the
resources you need to support your son or
daughter. The LMU Family Guide contains
information on campus resources and how
your student can get involved on campus!

Academics
Parents, you can be an LMU advocate in
many ways – by helping to recruit new
students, attending LMU family events
in your area, hosting an event, and
volunteering at one of the several family
events hosted on campus. You can also
advocate for your student by financially
supporting LMU through the Parents Fund.
Here are some great ways to get involved:
t
t
t
t
t
Freshman Family Send-Offs
(August): host a send-off
celebration for new incoming
freshman in your hometown.
Welcome Weekend (August
24-25): Talk with new parents/
families during family festivities
about your LMU experiences.
Regional Parent Receptions
(fall): Host a reception for parents
who live in your region.
Preview Day (April): Admitted
students are invited to campus one
last time before they decide where
to attend college. They are able
to participate in a Q&A panel and
parent volunteers add a special
perspective to the day’s activities.
Freshman Orientation (June):
Parent Council hosts a wine and
cheese reception as a way to meet
and mingle with new parents.
Parent Council
The LMU Parent Council advances
the University’s Mission by working
with the Office of Annual Giving/
Parent Programs & the Parent Fund, to
increase awareness of and support for
the Parent Fund. The Council promotes
communication with current parents and
parent participation in events, programs,
and fundraising activities for LMU.
Parent Ambassadors
Parent Ambassadors support and advance
the University’s Mission by working
with the Office of Parent Relations/
Parent Fund to help provide lines of
communication to current parents,
offer volunteer opportunities, and
encourage parent participation in events,
programs, and fundraising activities
for Loyola Marymount University.
As a premier Catholic university, Loyola Marymount University fosters a

First Year Experience
Navigating any new place or experience
can be a challenge, and the first year of
college is one of the biggest challenges
for most students. FYE is here to help
make the transition as smooth as possible.
Whether it is trying to figure out how to
find information on PROWL, learning how
to be involved on campus or finding a job
on campus, FYE is the place for first year
students to start. FYE provides some great
opportunities to make your mark as a part
of the Class of 2016 with the first year
service project and fun with Lion on the
Sand to start. We are involved with first
year students from orientation all the way
to the beginning of the sophomore year.
Your student’s success is our priority!
We understand the importance of your
role as parents. We have developed a
strong collaboration with Parent Programs
to ensure that if you have any concerns
or questions as your student transitions
to college life, you have an avenue to
express those concerns. Again, your
student’s success is our priority!

LMU Onecard
This department works to facilitate the
transition of incoming transfer students
to LMU by offering programs to engage
and involve them in university life. It
also aims to connect transfer students
to different opportunities at LMU.
The LMU OneCard is your student’s
“key” to the university!
The LMU Onecard is the ID card on
campus, but it is also used for students
to access their meal plan, their residence

Yellow Cab, Graphics department, campus
dining venues, laundry machines, copy
centers, student health, mail center, and
more than 60 off campus merchants.

and transactions. Students may also report
a lost or stolen card and automatically
send e-mail notices requesting funds.

Dining Services - Meal Plans
LMU & the LMU Dining Services by
Sodexo have designed meal plans to meet
a variety of different dining needs. Our
LION Plans offer four different pre-paid
Lion Dollar options, all using declining
balance accounts. Each plan has a
different buy-in amount. The L, I and O
plans all include a bonus value which
will be added the fourth week of the
spring semester. Also, beginning this
year, the L, I, and O plans will include
Lion Points. Lion Points are redeemable
at the Lair’s Community Table “All You
Care to Eat” meals, which are offered
as the evening meal on Thursdays,
Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This
allows students to save on the door
price to eat at the Community Table.
Changes to the meal plan can be
made ONLY during the third & fourth
week of each semester in the Student
Housing Office in Leavey 6.
LMU GUIDE
Please note: If in doubt, we recommend
purchasing a lower plan because only
5% of any unused portion of the LION
plan will carry over to next year. S
dollars can be added to supplement
the LION meal plan if needed.
Students living in traditional residence
halls are required to purchase one
of the four California sales-tax
exempt, non-refundable LMU meal
plans. LION Dollars can be used at
On-Campus dining venues only.
S-Dollars
This supplemental meal plan is available
to all full time (12+ units) undergraduate
students only. The minimal deposit is
$100 and can be added after a student’s
LION dollars run out or for any student that
wants to eat on campus occasionally. S
dollars are carried forward from year to
year as long as your student is actively
enrolled at LMU. Like funds in the L,
I, O or N plans, the money spent from
your S dollars is not subject to sales
tax and is used for On-Campus dining
venues only. S dollars may be added
at the Manage My Onecard site.
and most convenient option and deposits can be made immediately using a credit card.
Deposits can also be made at the OneCard office in the Charles Von Der Ahe Building
Suite 30 or at any VTS (Value Transfer Station) found in several locations on campus.
Student Housing
The Student Housing Office creates a living and learning environment by
providing programs and services that empower students to realize their potential
in mind, body and spirit within a community that honors human diversity
and accepts students as individuals with rights and responsibilities.

Student Worker Program
The Institute explores the Social Change
Model of Leadership Development along
with other leadership concepts, such as
servant leadership, Ignatian leadership
and a wide range of topics and issues.
The student worker program is a unique
organization at LMU. It is designed by the
University to award a competitive financial
aid package to students with financial need
in return for service to the University. The
Program consists of 24 students, who live
together on campus. They provide service
for every major event the University hosts
from our Alumni BBQ to Commencement.
The 12 men and 12 women in the program
also intern with departments campus-wide,
from Recycling to University Relations. They
describe themselves as being the hardest
working students on campus and their
outstanding work ethic speaks for itself.
It takes 2 easy steps to complete
one module of the LMU Ignatian
Leadership Institute:
Applications to join the program
are available each spring in Student
