Primetime Post
Primetimers took a trip to Scotland
via the Queen City Brass Band, directed by
Jamie Hood, a native Scot. Jamie began his
musical interest at age four, taking cornet
lessons from his father. He began performing
at age seven with a local Salvation Army
Band. Jamie studied at The Royal Scottish
Academy of Music along with several master
teachers in France and Germany. He came to
the USA in 2006, and currently is the
Divisional Music Director for The Salvation
Army in North and South Carolina, and is the
Musical Director of the Queen City Brass
Band, a band that has been performing all
opportunity to invite friends, neighborsover
and coworkers

of September
11th, in the
band playing a variety of horns joined by the
drums, we were delighted as they presented a
beautiful Celtic Celebration. Two members of
the Ceol na Gael Irish Pipe Band, dressed in
authentic Scottish attire, also performed with
a bagpipe and drum in traditional
Scottish style.
A fun surprise took us to Ireland,
because the Celtic Celebration also
included Irish dancers from the
Rince Na H’Eireann School of
Dance, dancing Riverdance style.
Kenny Durbin, who plays in
Central’s orchestra and the Queen
City Brass Band, brought the
evening to a close by singing “What a
Wonderful World” in his memorable, Louis
Armstrong style that we love!

Meet a Primetimer

Introducing Chris & Elwyn McSwain
If you don’t know Chris and Elwyn McSwain, you owe it to yourself
to get to know them. They are a delightful couple, full of energy and
with an almost delicious sense of humor. Chris grew up in the
Greensboro area, and Elwyn is a Charlotte native. They met at
Camp Lurecrest at Lake Lure, NC in 1968. Chris was sixteen years
old and working at the camp when she had a dental emergency.
Elwyn happened to be at Camp Lurecrest, home on leave from
Vietnam, and he was the only person there with a car—a 1968
Buick Wildcat. He took Chris to Forest City to the dentist.
Five years later, when Elwyn was in graduate school, and Chris was in undergraduate school, they married.
They were married at Garr Tabernacle by Elwyn’s brother, Bob. They have three children—two daughters,
Liz and Amanda, and one son, Michael—and six grandchildren.
Chris and Elwyn are both officially retired from the Mecklenburg Department of Social Services, where Chris
was Supervisor of Youth and Family Services, and Elwyn was Social Services Manager, Child Protective
Services. During their service at DSS, in addition to working long, hard hours, they were deeply involved in
New Venture Camp, a camp designed for children and families receiving services from Youth and Family
Services. New Venture Camp met at Camp Lurecrest and exposed not only the youth, but also about fifteen
staff members of DSS, to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Given the McSwains’ humor the logical question to be asked of them is, “What is the funniest event that has
happened to you since you married?” Immediately, Elwyn responded, “She actually married me for my hair.”
Chris, referring to the time in 1968 when Elwyn took her to the dentist, in his 1968 Buick Wildcat, said that,
when Elwyn took her to the hospital to give birth to their first child (in 1978), he drove that same 1968 Buick
Wildcat. After a few more years, they donated it to a staff pastor at their church in Birmingham, Alabama,
where they were on staff.
Elwyn described Chris, “She is my Martha, the ‘get-it-done’ person, keeping things running. She’s the brains
and heart of our family. When I worked as social services manager, I worked a lot of hours. Chris understood
and supported me. Now she lets me take naps.” Chris described Elwyn, “Elwyn is a quiet spiritual leader.
He’s more of a nurturer than I am. He’s the emotional peace of our family. I go to him with scriptural
questions. He does for others. He is selfless and truly a servant to this family.”
Chris and Elwyn love both the organization of Primetimers and the people who make it possible. Elwyn said,
“It’s a high-energy, upbeat program regardless of age. It’s wonderful to see the importance of the
relationships built and nurtured through Primetimers.”
Although Chris and Elwyn have spent most of the last forty years in Charlotte, with a short time in
Birmingham, Alabama, they still have opportunities to travel. They have visited Colorado, Arizona, Missouri,
and St. Maarten. This coming May, they will be taking an Alpine tour, visiting Germany, Austria, Switzerland,
and Italy. No, they don’t need someone to carry their bags. That question has already been asked.

Once upon a time there was a man who had nothing and God
gave him ten apples.
• He gave him the first three apples to eat.
• He gave him the second three apples to trade for shelter from
the sun and rain.
• He gave him the third three apples to trade for clothing to
wear.
• He gave him the last apple so that he might have something
to give back to God to show his gratitude for the other nine.

The man ate the first three apples.
He traded the second three for shelter from the sun and rain.
He traded the third three for clothing to wear.
Then, he looked at the tenth apple. It seemed bigger and
juicer than the rest. He knew that God had given him the
tenth apple so that he might return it to Him out of gratitude
for the other nine. But the tenth apple looked bigger and juicer
than the rest. And he reasoned that God had all the other
apples in the world. So the man ate the tenth apple – and
gave back to God the core.
