Spring has sprung in the city and it is teeming
with life. There are books and authors
everywhere you look. It’s finally time for the
Festival of Literature in Lillehammer!
Among the international highlights are the
Belarusian Nobel Prize nominee Svetlana
Aleksijevitsj, one of the leading figures of British
literature, Julian Barnes, and the young, Danish
poet Yahya Hassan. Read up ahead of time, so
you will get even more out of the
experience when you see the authors on stage.
With a focus on freedom of expression and
authors’ struggles with the words, a geographic
plunge into the social conditions and literature of
Russia and Eastern Europe, the powerful works of
Nordic authors, a dose of new Norwegian drama,
poetry and food on the menu, it is our pleasure
to welcome you to a festival that we hope will not
only entertain, challenge, and inspire you but also
provide you with new knowledge!
PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS
OPENING
The opening performance will be a dramatic
homage to Sigrid Undset, on her birthday. Ellen
Horn has been cast in the role of Undset. Other
cast members are Norwegian authors Herbjørg
Wassmo and Synne Lea, along with Croatian
author Slavenka Drakulić, and Marie Aljokhina from
the Russian punk poetry group Pussy Riot.

Through the literary encounters and lectures you
will have the chance to experience during this
year’s festival, an arc is drawn extending all the
way from the smallest of stories told in personal
voices, to the large social issues about war, peace,
democracy and freedom of expression.
We can offer six festival days and more than 200
scheduled events. So if you are fond of literature
and debate and are looking for a social meeting
place with a focus on books, then Lillehammer is
the place to be on 20–25 May. Feel free to create

WELCOME TO THE FESTIVAL!
We will celebrate literature through a multigenre gala evening: Novels, shorts stories and
poetry of significance will fill the evening. We
start off with an encounter with Julian Barnes,
one of the leading figures of British literature. This will be Barnes’ first appearance on
stage at a Norwegian literature event, here in
meeting and conversation with Linn Ullmann.
In addition there will be a reading by the
Danish star poet Yahya Hassan and a meeting
with Norway’s foremost short story author Kjell
Askildsen.

UKRAINE ON FIRE
What are the greatest challenges facing Ukraine today?
Don’t miss the meeting with author Andrej Kurkov, who is
considered one of Ukraine’s foremost contemporary authors.
Kurkov’s literary breakthrough came with the satirical novel
Picknick on the Ice, a dark, absurd comedy from post-Soviet Ukraine. He has in recent times lived in the midst of the
ongoing uprisings and violence in Kiev. Read more on page 15
SVETLANA ALEKSIJEVITSJ
She has written about life following the nuclear accident in
Chernobyl, about Soviet women’s contribution during the Second
World War and about the life of Soviet people in the aftermath of
communism. In the autumn of 2013 she was among those heading
the shortlist of nominees for the Nobel Prize in literature. The
Belarusian author Svetlana Aleksijevitsj will participate in and be
in the spotlight for a number of events during the festival.

THE YEAR’S BJØRNSON LECTURER: SLAVENKA DRAKULIC
Slavenka Drakulić has written about life under
communism, in wartime and violations against women in
article form, novels and non-fiction. As a women’s rights
activist she has had a particular focus on the impact
of the communist regime and subsequent wars on the
situation of women in the Balkans. She left Croatia due
to threats as a result of her unflinching descriptions of
the human beings and cultural and political unrest in the
region. Drakulić will also take part in the Opening
Performance and two author meetings.

NORWEGIAN-POLISH SHORT STORY MEETING
Do Norwegian and Polish contemporary short fiction have
anything in common, and if so, what? We have invited two
Norwegian and two Polish short story authors to meet for
readings and conversation: Mikkel Bugge, Laila Stien, Marek
Bienczyk and Inga Iwasiów. Read more on page 11
FINALE
Loneliness and small town life in Norway are recurring
themes in Bjella’s melancholy lyrics. For Vonde visu (Oh Yeah!)
("Songs of Pain (Oh Yeah!)") he was awarded the Norwegian
music prizes Spellemannprisen, Prøysenprisen and Bendiksenprisen. On his most recent album Heim for å døy (Home to die)
a darker Bjella emerges. With greater variation and a rougher
expression he delivers a modern Norwegian classic.

PUSSY RIOT
Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina
Samutsevich were charged with hooliganism and
sentenced to two years’ inprisonment after having
performed a protest song against Putin in the Cathedral
of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. They were later pardoned
and released. Maria Alyokhina are coming to Lillehammer
and will speak about their work and several filmmakers,
artists and activists.

What is in fact happening in Russia?
Does Putin want to tighten an iron grip as a
Russian dictator and come down hard on all
rebellious and artistic activity? The reactions
against the feminist punk group Pussy Riot is
just one of several examples of violations of
freedom of expression and artistic freedom in
the country. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria
Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich were
charged with hooliganism and sentenced to two
years in prison after having performed a protest
song aginst Putin at the Cathedral of Christ the
Saviour in Moscow. They were later pardoned
and released. Maria Alyokhina will be in Lillehammer together with the filmmakers Taisiya
Krugovykh and Vasily Bogatov and the activists
and artists Lusine Dzhanyan and Aleksei
Nekrasov. They will talk about Russia, activism

Galleri ZINK welcomes you to the year’s festival
exhibition, featuring Håkon Gullvåg and Sliman
Mansour.
Works by Palestinian Sliman Mansour and
Norwegian Håkon Gullvåg will be presented
here, two of the respective countries’ foremost
contemporary artists. Both have exhibited their
work extensively, both nationally and internationally. Although their artistic expressions are
different, we find a number of convergences,
not least through a shared interest in issues of
current social relevance. The exhibition will be
up from 20 May – 15 June 2014.

during the opening of the Norwegian Festival of

OPENING PERFORMANCE
The performance will simultaneously pay
homage to Sigrid Undset, on her birthday. We
enter her literary production at a point in time
where a great deal was at stake, when Undset
was forced to leave Bjerkebæk and Norway
due to the German occupation in 1940. From
exile in America, Undset wrote with passionate
engagement letters, articles and lectures on the
themes of oppression, resistance, exile, literature and the necessity of self-expression. Actress
Ellen Horn will perform the role of Undset.
We have invited Norwegian authors Herbjørg
Wassmo and Synne Lea, the Croatian author
Slavenka Drakulić, as well as Maria Aljokhina
from the Russian punk poetry group Pussy Riot
to take part using their own texts.
The performance is beautifully framed by
the music of Ragnhild and Eldbjørg Hemsing.

Sliman Mansour is viewed as one of the
foremost painters in Palestine. In his works, the
Israeli occupation is a consistent and recurring
theme, and he is co-author of the book Both
Sides of Peace. Håkon Gullvåg has held a central
position on the Norwegian art scene since his
breakthrough as an artist at Galleri Dobloug
in 1983. He has since 2008 painted a series of
artworks employing motifs and impressions
from acts of war in Gaza and on the West Bank.
About this he has said: “I have painted in a wild
rage.” Mansour and Gullvåg met and developed
their friendship through their paintings and
together organised the exhibition “Situasjoner”
(“Situations”) in Trondheim and Ramallah in
2008. Meet them in conversation with journalist
and former foreign correspondent Sidsel Wold.

A Monster Calls is a project that was started
by British author Siobhan Dowd, but which she
never had the opportunity to finish because she
was afflicted with cancer and died. Patrick Ness
picked up the baton and completed the book,

meeting with books as a child, via his book
collector’s mania, to the topic of his own writing
process, and about the challenges of today
related to the role of the printed book in the

How might a contemporary poem look if
expressed through contemporary dance?
Dancer Henriette Hamli interprets the readings
of three of Norway’s most important poets:
Steinar Opstad, Gunnar Wærness and Cecilie
Løveid. Henriette Hamli has studied dance at
the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and has
a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz dance. She now
works as a freelance dancer and has taken part
in both and POP, MOVE and RESIDENS at Dance
House Norway. She has previously interpreted
texts through dance with Geir Langslet and Tove
Tandberg Krafft in a project called Light Of Love.

“The illustrator as author. About finding a unique
language for each book.” Isol (Marisol Misenta)
is an Argentenian author of picture books and
an illustrator. She debuted in 1997 with Vida de
Perros (“A Dog’s Life”). She both writes and
illustrates her own books, illustrates the works of
other authors, and has for periods of time been
the in-house illustrator for one of Argentina’s
largest newspapers. Isol has won a number of
prizes and awards, and in 2013 she received
the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial
Award (ALMA). In addition to Vida de Perros,
also Secreto de familia (“Family Secrets”) and
Nocturne: Dream Recipes have been translated
into Norwegian. Meet Isol in conversation with
the Swedish picture book critic Ulla Rhedin
about the process behind her picture books.

NORDIC FANTASY, WHAT IS IT?
For this year’s Bjørnson lecturer, Slavenka
Drakulić, fiction and society cannot be viewed
in isolation from each other: She has written
novels about the war in the Balkans, about rape
in a prison camp in Serbia, about people in need
of organ transplants, and she is interested in
women’s experiences of their own bodies, of
vulnerability, sexuality, aging. What does she
think about the relation between reality and

When the feminist group Pussy Riot performed
a 40-second punk prayer in one of Russia’s most
important cathedrals, they were arrested and
charged with religious hate and blasphemy.
The trial awoke attention all over the world.
The Oscar-nominated directors followed the
group for six months and give us access to
exceptional footage about the three women
behind the colourful balaclavas. While
they defend themselves from a cage in the
courtroom, we receive through family and
friends an idea of how they have gone from
being political activists to becoming modern
day icons.

Laila Stien is one of Norway’s foremost short
story authors and Mikkel Bugge’s short story
collection Tauet (“The Rope”) has won critical
acclaim. Marek Bienczyk and Inga Iwasiów
are prominent and well-known authors from
Poland and all four will come to Lillehammer,
each with his or her respective new short story.

Slavenka Drakulić from Croatia will give a
lecture about peace and dialogue from the
perspective of the Balkan wars of the 1990s.
Through a diverse and internationally recognised body of literary work, Drakulić has
written about life under communism, war, and
violations of women, in articles, novels and
non-fiction. As a women’s rights activist she
has had a particular interest in the impact of
both the communist form of governance and
subsequent wars on the situation of women

– How shall one write about war and violation?
Here songs and texts by two neighbouring
countries’ great troubadours will be presented:
Alf Prøysen, born just before the First World
War, and Cornelis Vreeswijk, born just before
1313
Prøysen from the countryside, from the austere
era when people got married once in a lifetime,
the time of the little people of humble means
in northern Europe, those prone to abstruseness of speech more than hyperbole – the
origin of his songs is in the folk song tradition
of the Norwegian-Swedish small towns and
forests. Vreeswijk from the city, Amsterdam/
Stockholm, with powerful wartime experiences, of an urban generation who married
several times, the international artist influenced
by blues, samba, the Swedish sailor’s waltz,
Finnish tango, French chansons, protest songs
from many countries.
Prøysen with his fear of water, terrified of
being out on the ocean. Vreeswijk an avid
swimmer, open-sea diver, sailboat skipper.
Great contrasts. And nonetheless, great similarities. Prøysen Norway’s Bellman, the founder
of the Norwegian folk song tradition — two
centuries after the Swedish fountainhead, the
work of whom Cornelis Vreeswijk both learned
from and cultivated. Håkon Paulsberg plays the
guitar and performs the songs, Jan Erik Vold is
our literary guide, storyteller and poetry reader.

about Banaz Mahod, the British-Kurdish
woman who was murdered in an honour killing

by her family for having fallen in love with
another man. The film won the prestigious
Emmy Award for the best international TV

We celebrate literature with a gala evening that
transcends genre definitions. Important novels,
short stories and poetry will fill the evening.
We look forward to a powerful reading by
the Danish star poet and debut author Yahya
Hassan, who has had more than 100,000
poetry books sold and otherwise incited
the wrath of large portions of the Danish
immigrant community with his autobiographical poems.
Norway’s leading short story author Kjell
Askildsen is considered one of the greatest
prose writers of Norwegian post-war literature.
He will talk about how he looks back on a long
life filled with short stories. He meets Alf van
der Hagen for a conversation.

Andrej Kurkov is considered one of Ukraine’s
most prominent authors and experienced his
great literary breakthrough with the satirical
novel Picknick on the Ice, a dark, absurd
comedy from post-Soviet Ukraine. As a
Ukraine citizen with a Russian background and
language, Kurkov has one foot in each world,
transcending Russian and Ukrainian identities
and affiliations. He has in recent times lived
in the midst of the uprisings and violence in
Kiev, and has written a number of reports from
Ukraine for the British media. We ask Kurkov
how he sees Ukraine’s immediate future and
how the development of the country, since the
dissolution of the Soviet Union, is depicted in
contemporary literature. Moderator: Ane

At this event we will bid farewell to two
mothers and welcome new mothers.
Cecilie Enger received the Booksellers Prize
last year for the novel Mors gaver (“Mother’s
Gifts”). As her mother’s memory is gradually
erased by Alzheimer’s, the family history
is brought to life when Cecilie finds her
mother’s meticulously detailed lists of all of
the Christmas gifts from four decades. This is
a warm and gripping story about memory and
forgetting.
Icelandic Sölvi Björn Sigurdsson meets death
with a good portion of humour in the novel
Siðustu dagar móður minnar (“My Mother’s
Last Day”). The son Herman accompanies his
mother on a final trip to Amsterdam, where
she wants to check in at the Lavland clinic for
one last soothing treatment before she dies of
terminal cancer. But first she is determined to
enjoy life and have one final spree.

British-Somali Nadifa Mohamed took the
reading public by storm with her debut novel
Black Mamba Boy in 2010, in which she tells
her own father’s story from East Africa. She
has now written a second novel also available
in Norwegian translation: The Orchard of
Lost Souls (De tapte sjelers land). Mohamed’s
writing moves between cultures and national
borders, between Somalia and London. She
was chosen for Granta’s list of Great Britain’s
ten most important young authors for this
decade, and thereby represents a new and

With the documentary book The Unwomanly
Face of War, Svetlana Aleksijevitsj went
against the official Soviet depiction of the
war effort during the Second World War. The
discussion will revolve around how the book
came about, and delve into women’s concrete
experiences from the war, and how these
experiences deviate from those of men. Aleksijevitsj provokes and challenges the Soviet
Union’s idealised self-image and sense of pride
following the victory in this war – here she will
speak about how this was received when her
book was published and present the women’s

A poetry slam is a competition situated
somewhere between a poetry reading,
stand-up and the spoken word. Participants
are judged on the basis of both the text
they perform and how they perform it. The
audience decides! The Norwegian poetry
slam championship is being organised this
year for the ninth time and the winner in
Lillehammer will go on to the final which will
be held in Oslo in the autumn. Show up and

Torgrim Eggen wrote his first article about
David Bowie’s Berlin period for the journal
Ballade in 1983. In this music lecture, based on
the book Berlin. Det 20. århundrets hovedstad,
(”Berlin. The capital of the 20th century”) he
will tell us about the powerful convergence of
Bowie’s musical and political ideas for a period
of a few of years in the shadow of the Wall.
The result was a type of music that set the
tone for an entire generation and which is still
experienced as current, even 37 years later. The
lecture was held for the first time at the House
of Literature in September and has been met
with great enthusiasm on the part of many and
vexed the eardrums of others.

Spur of the moment participation in the
Yodelling Festival in Huttwil, Switzerland in
the summer of 2007 produced the duo Polkabjørn & Kleine Heine. A mere five years later,
they have performed for both royalty and
ragamuffins, literally. Polkabjørn is not only
one of Northern Europe’s best yodeller but
he has also become a proper overtone singer.
Accordion virtuoso Kleine Heine was at the age
of 14 a well-established jazz musician and was
also renowned jazz musician Ola Kvernberg’s
former sidekick. Heine is now studying at the

Grieg Academy in Bergen and has grown out
of the shadow of his former mentors. It is impossible to be fully prepared emotionally for
what you will experience at Kulturhuset Banken
on this evening.

Meet two of Cuba’s most prominent and celebrated authors who are visiting Lillehammer
together for the first time. Leonardo Padura is
Cuba’s king of crime fiction. He has received
a number of awards and commemorations for
his prolific literary production and his work
has also been translated into a long list of
languages. He is especially well-known for the
Havana quartet, where we meet the unconventional investigator Mario Conde who brings
us along into a Cuba we had no idea existed.
Wendy Guerra has made her mark internationally especially for her novels, which offer an
unvarnished portrait of the living conditions
in Cuba. Although she is still not allowed to
publish her novels in her own country, she
has established herself as a nationally known
radio voice and poet. Meet the authors, both of
whom are launching books during the festival,
in conversation with literary scholar and Cuba
expert Hans Jacob Ohldieck from the University of Bergen.

and the prize for the best film at the Tromsø
International Film Festival, the film asks a
number of fundamental moral questions and
is simultaneously a subtle analysis of today’s
Russia. The tension in the film is propelled
forward by the main character’s dillemma and
the choices she makes. In the exquisite, long
takes, often without dialogue and sparingly
accompanied by Philip Glass’ original music,
director Andrej Zvjagintsev and actress
Nadezhda Markina produce a strong character
study and a nuanced portrait of a woman who

She has been nominated for the Nordic Glass
Key award and is considered Iceland’s queen of
the crime fiction genre: Yrsa Sigurðardóttir is
the author behind the series about Thóra Gudmundsdóttir and also a number of individual
crime novels. Her most recent crime novel, De
uønskede, (”The Unwanted”) follows the hero
Óðinn Hafsteinsson and his investigation of
suspicions of child abuse at Krokur, a treatment
facility for boys from the 1970s. The investigations disclose an inhuman regime under which
two boys have died under brutal circumstances. In conversation with Mette Karlsvik.

Loneliness and the life of small town Norway
are recurring themes in Bjella’s melancholy
lyrics. He has called for greater awareness of the
importance of lyrics on the part of Norwegian
musicians and is considered one of Norway’s
foremost lyricists. For Vonde visu (Oh Yeah!)
(Songs of Pain (Oh Yeah!)), released in 2011,
he was awarded the Norwegian music prizes
Spellemannprisen, Prøysenprisen and Bendiksenprisen. In Heim for å døy (Home to die)
(2013), his last album, a darker Bjella emerges.
With greater variation and a rougher expression
he delivers a modern Norwegian classic.

GULLVÅG AND SLIMAN MANSOUR
The artists meet: Håkon Gullvåg and Sliman
Mansour 20 MAY until 14 juni
Sliman Mansour is a Palestinian painter. He
is viewed as one of the foremost artists in
Palestine. In Mansour’s works, the Israeli
occupation is a consistent and recurring
theme. He is co-author of the book Both
Sides of Peace. Håkon Gullvåg was born in
Trondheim in 1959, and works primarily in
Trondheim and Oslo. As a painter he has held a
key position on the Norwegian arts scene since
his artistic breakthrough at Galleri Dobloug in
1983, and his work has been purchased by a
number of important institutions. Since 1995
Gullvåg’s ornamentation of churches has given
him a position as one of the country’s foremost
artists in the field of church art. Parallel to this
he has received great recognition for his many
portraits of persons of significance in Norway.
In the past ten years Gullvåg has also worked
with the graphic arts and is best known for
his lithographs but in recent years has also
developed an interest in gravure printing.

A THOUSAND THREADS
– A STORY TOLD IN TEXTILES
With this comprehensive exhibition the
Lillehammer Art Museum and Maihaugen
join forces in throwing light on the history of
textile art’s beautiful creations, from utility
objects to freestanding and thought provoking
contemporary artworks. A selection of textile
works from the 900s up to the 1800s provides
the framework for the Maihaugen presentation.
The Lillehammer Art Museum continues the
story by allowing the textile objects to depart
from the realm of usage and instead take the
pulse of the contemporary expression of today.

Per Dybvig is an illustrator and painter. He is
considered one of Norway’s foremost picture
book illustrators and has illustrated a number
of books and for newspapers. His illustrated
works include Reven og grisungen (“Fox
and Piglet”) by Bjørn Rørvik, Doctor Proctor
by Jo Nesbø, the books about Samson and
Roberto by Ingvar Ambjørnsen, Foreldrekrigen
(“Parents at War”) by Erika Flatland and the
books about Svein and Rotta by Marit Nicolaisen. His illustrations are often described as
dishevelled, absurd, rowdy, playful, free-spirited and amusing. In collaboration with Galleri
