The Natisone
Valleys
Pulfero
NATURE AND TRADITIONS
CAVES AND BEARS
The Natisone valleys link Cividale del Friuli to the valley of the Isonzo river in Slovenia and are
formed by the Natisone river and by its tributaries, such as the Alberone, the Cosizza and the Erbezzo
The valleys are dominated by Mount Matajur (1641 m),
the symbol of this territory. The altitude of the mounts,
which do not exceed 1100 metres, the several country
roads connecting the valleys, the nature paths in the
woods and the presence of watercourses make the
Natisone valleys a place suitable for nature walks,
mountain bike tours, horse rides and sport fishing.
The Natisone river, with its emerald-green waters,
provides its visitors with surprising views and
pleasant shadow on summer days. The valleys were
chosen by men as an ideal place to live already during
the Palaeolithic and the Neolithic periods due to
their particular natural environment; later they were
colonized by the Romans, by the Lombards and by
the Slavic populations, whose uses and traditions
still characterize the life and the culture of the valley
dwellers.
In green surroundings, it is one of the most important centres of the valleys and provides visitors with
a network of easy paths and itineraries to be able to
discover its natural and artistic richness. The historical importance of the territory of Pulfero dates back
to the Lombard age, when it belonged to the Gastald
of Antro, an administrative unit that was originally
subject to the Lombard king, then to the patriarch of
Aquileia and, finally, to the doge of Venice. In Biacis
a tower of the castle of Ahrensperg, which together
with the cave of Antro formed a defence system, is
still visible.
Cave of San Giovanni d’Antro and St. John’s Church
The most important monument in
Pulfero is the cave of San Giovanni
d’Antro, interesting not only from
the natural point of view, but also
from the historical, artistic and
religious point of view. From the
town of Antro, with a few minutes’
walk you will reach the steps that
lead to the entrance of the cave,
the length of which, explored so
far, exceeds four kilometres. Inside it were found bones of extinct
vertebrates of the Quaternary period, such as the Ursus Spaeleus.
Interesting at the entrance of the
cave, St. John’s chapel, built in
1477, some fresco fragments and
the 17th-century giltwood altar of
the Slovenian school. The statues,
attributed to Giovanni Martini’s
workshop, can be dated back to
the sixteenth century.

Prehistoric Pile dwellings
around the Alps
inscribed on the World
Heritage List in 2011
Founded in the 1st century B.C. by Julius Caesar with the name of Forum Julii, from which the name
Friuli derives, in 568 A.D. it became the capital of the first Lombard duchy in Italy and afterwards,
for some centuries, the residence of the Patriarchs of Aquileia. After about 350 years of rule by the
Republic of Venice, in the mid nineteenth century it became part of the Kingdom of Italy

Since 2011 the Lombard artistic evidence has been
listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because the
monuments are “considered of high architectural and
decorative quality and they constitute exemplary evidence of the period between the 6th and the 8th century
A.D.”. A walk along the streets and in the squares of
Cividale will make you discover art treasures, such as
Grimacco
and Drenchia
the 16th-century frescoed Palazzo Stringher-Levrini or
the house originally considered the residence of Paul
the Deacon. Cividale is also well-known for the spectacular landscape provided by the surrounding hills
covered in vineyards from whose grapes the excellent
wines of the DOC (Denomination of Controlled Origin)
area “Colli Orientali del Friuli” are produced.

Cividale del Friuli - Unesco World Heritage Site
Cividale del Friuli
and the Natisone Valleys
Tarcento and the Torre Valleys
UNSPOILT NATURE, HISTORY AND FOOD AND WINE TRADITION
Cividale del Friuli, with art treasures listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and Tarcento are the most
important locations in the Colli Orientali del Friuli area, famous throughout the world for its precious wine.
Faedis, Attimis and Nimis are towns surrounded by remains of medieval castles.
The Natisone Valleys, rich in forests of ash trees, chestnuts, hazels, lindens and hornbeams, as well as in
flowers, provide their visitors with an amazing variety of colours and scents in all seasons. Along the paths
of the valleys, if you are lucky, you may get to see many animal species: roe deer, wild boars, hares, foxes,
squirrels and bear tracks. The Natisone Valleys still keep their culture and traditions alive through the
Slovenian language, the rites and the customs linked to Christmas and to Carnival.
The Torre Valleys are an unspoilt mountain environment, close to Friuli Venezia Giulia’s art cities.
They are an ideal destination for all those who love to plunge into wild nature, rich in waters that in their
ˇ ˇ stream
courses create spectacular Karst streams and wonderful waterfalls among which that of the Boncic
in the plain of Campo di Bonis. From the Gran Monte range you will enjoy a breathtaking view over the
Carnic and Julian Alps and up to the Adriatic Sea. Walking along the various paths that lead to Gran Monte,
it is possible to admire the precious flora (Asphodel, Iris and different types of Lilium) and the interesting
fauna (griffon vulture, deer, bear, lynx and wild cat). The natural attractions of this corner of Friuli attract
hang gliding and paragliding, mountain biking, speleology, sport climbing and horse riding enthusiasts.
Very appreciated is the variety of paths suitable for everyone and, in winter, the cross-country ski runs.

various evidence relative to the
First World War is also displayed.

Cividale del Friuli - Unesco World Heritage Site
03 National Archaeological Museum
The museum was founded in 1817
by Count Michele della Torre Valsassina, a scholar who in the early
nineteenth century carried out
excavation campaigns in Cividale
and surroundings thanks to grants
from the Emperor of Austria Francis I. Today the museum is housed
in the Palazzo dei Provveditori Veneti, built in the 16th century to
the design of Andrea Palladio. The
National Archaeological Museum
is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
because of the presence, in the
archaeological area under the museum, of the remains of the late
medieval Palazzo Patriarcale (Patriarchal Palace) and of a stratified
segment of towns with traces of life
that can be dated back to before and
during the Lombard occupation.
The early medieval collections are
the heart of the exhibition; the first
floor, besides a section regarding
the Roman colony of Julium Carnicum (Zuglio), is entirely dedicated
to the Lombards. Very famous are
the accoutrements of the Lombard
necropolises mainly found outside
the Roman walls but also in town,
such as the sarcophagus of Gisulf
discovered in Piazza Paolo Diacono. The richness of jewellery like
fibulae, necklaces, earrings and
the important collection of Lombard gold coins, in addition to the
variety of objects of everyday use,
make this museum a real shrine
of art and history worth visiting.
The museum can be enjoyed by
everyone thanks to the display of
the objects and to their presentation with panels for an immediate
understanding of the uses and customs of the Lombard people. Of
remarkable interest are also the
numerous liturgical furnishings of
the Byzantine, Lombard and Carolingian ages, such as the precious
Pace del Duca Orso, in ivory and
embossed and gilded silver.

04 Monastery of Santa Maria in Valle and Lombard Temple
Over the centuries the monastery
of Santa Maria in Valle has developed along the banks of the Natisone river. The place, probably comprised since its origin within the
Roman town, in the Lombard age
was the seat of the royal court and
the residence of the chamberlain.
It preserves important evidence of
8th-century architecture and art:
the oratory of Santa Maria in Valle known as the Lombard Temple.
It was built in the 8th century with
the function of Palatine chapel of
the royal court, then became the
oratory of the nuns until 1893,
when it was donated to the Municipality to be opened to the public.
The temple is the maximum and
best known expression of the architecture and art left by the Lombards in Italy. Unique in western
art are the stucco decorations of
the big arch with vine shoot, which
enrich the entrance portal, and the
other ornaments of the upper part
with the row of Saints and Martyrs.
Precious is also the wooden choir,
preserved inside, skilfully carved,
probably by German masters, at
the end of the fourteenth century.

05 Devil’s Bridge
06 Celtic Hypogeum
The Devil’s Bridge over the Natisone river, the symbol of the town,
dating back to the mid fifteenth
century, is extremely charming.
Destroyed during the Battle of Caporetto in October of 1917 by the
Italians, it was rebuilt and inaugurated in May of 1918 by the Austrians.
A place full of mystery, a complex
of artificial caves excavated on
various levels, situated under a
house of via Monastero Maggiore.
Some “masks” carved in the stone,
probable remains of Celtic funerary art, can be seen. Afterwards it
was used by the Romans, probably
as a prison.

07 Medieval House
08 Romagno Wood
The Medieval House is Cividale’s
oldest house built on the foundations of a tower, probably belonging to the first Roman town
walls. The solid building withstood
natural disasters and has kept unchanged until today.
The Romagno Wood is right outside Cividale, in the hamlet of
Spessa, rich in vineyards. The
wood is a 53-hectare park with
trails suitable for families and for
all those wishing to spend some
hours in nature. It is possible to
admire some trees typical of the
region, such as oaks, downy oaks,
English oaks, Turkey oaks, field
maples, sycamore maples, common and hop hornbeams, whitebeams, cherry trees, chestnuts
Info: via Monastero Maggiore
Natisone Valleys
Near Grimacco is Drenchia, which provides extremely
charming landscapes and some walks in the places
where people fought during the Battle of Caporetto;
cannon emplacements are still visible along the path
of the Kolovrat Range. Casoni Solarie, on the other
hand, is sadly known because the first Italian victim
of the First World War, the Alpine soldier Riccardo di
Giusto, to whom a monument is dedicated, died here.
Info: www.comune.drenchia.ud.it
Among the hamlets of the municipality of Prepotto
those of Codromaz and Berda are recovered gems
of rural architecture. In the level and hilly part of the
territory are cultivated the typical wines of the region
and also the Schioppettino di Prepotto, a native spe-
cies of vine typical of the valley of the Judrio river; this
incomparable wine is part of the family of the Ribolle
wines: in fact, it is the black ribolla or pocalza, as it is
called in Slovenian.

VINEYARDS AND PATHS OF THE SPIRIT
Grimacco lies, with its numerous hamlets, in the upper Cosizza valley, in an unspoilt environment that,
since ancient times, has been the meeting point of
ethnic groups that have left a heritage of folk traditions. Among the various hamlets we would like to
mention Topolò, which lies in a wonderful panoramic
position and is a fascinating example of the combination of rural architecture and contemporary art; the
hamlet has been enriched with works by Italian and
European artists, who every year, in July, are guests
at the international art, music and theatre event called “topolò station - postaja topolove”.

02 Christian Museum and Treasure of the Cathedral
The new museum, situated next
to the cathedral, displays two
Lombard sculpture masterpieces:
the Baptistery of Callisto, an 8thcentury octagonal aedicule, and
the Altar of Ratchis, a Karst stone
altar decorated with bas-reliefs,
a donation of Duke Ratchis. In the
other rooms you can admire the
treasure of the Cathedral comprising the stone throne on which several Patriarchs were enthroned,

Motta Antiquarium and fossil exhibition - Povoletto
The museum proposes two sections, one archaeological and the
other paleontological. The archaeological section provides an
overview of the Land of the Nine
Castles, which goes from Cividale
to Nimis and up to Povoletto; here
are displayed the finds from the
excavations in the Motta castle of
the last decade. The paleontological section is very rich and is a
“journey” through the geological
history of Friuli; the skeleton of
the Ursus Speleaus, a bear, now
extinct, that lived in the caves,
stands out; a life-size reproduction
of the mammal in its habitat is on
display.

Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Castelmonte
The Marian Sanctuary of Castelmonte stands on the Julian PreAlps range at over 600 metres
above sea level, a few kilometres
from Cividale del Friuli. The place was originally a Roman post,
while the finding of some evidence
would date the foundation of the
sanctuary back to the 6th-7th century. In the 13th century the sanctuary is considered as a stronghold, an unbreakable fortress to
defend the underlying plain. The
sanctuary is fortified and guarded with weapons to protect the
pilgrims and was enlarged until
becoming a borough. The present
church shows the changes made
over the centuries. Since 1913 the
care of the sanctuary has been
entrusted to Capuchin Friars. The
fifteenth-century stone statue of
the “Madonna viva” (living Virgin),
of the Salzburg school, is still greatly venerated by the population of
Friuli. These remote origins make
Castelmonte one of the most ancient Marian sanctuaries in northeastern Italy. The sanctuary can
be reached by car or bus from
Carraria. The local people traditionally reach the sanctuary on
foot along the many paths or the
road that from Carraria leads to
the sanctuary; along the road you
will find the capitals of the Rosary
representing the mysteries of the
life of Christ.

the large organ, a precious instrument placed above the central entrance, built by Malvestito (1906)
from Padua, which has over 2000
pipes. Thanks to a transparent
glass floor in the central nave, it is
possible to see numerous remains
of previous buildings, emerged
during the recent reflooring of the
church.

VILLAS AND FOLKLORE
The green Torre valleys are characterised by the spectacular valley hollowed out by the Torre river
between the mounts Stella and Bernadia and by the valleys of its tributaries: the Vedronza and Mea
streams and other streams that create environments rich in waters and woods with a very varied
flora and fauna. These valleys are rich in history, folklore and traditions and provide visitors with
an amazing food and wine offer with dishes taken from old recipes, jealously guarded and handed
down the generations
Surrounded by hills of vineyards, woods and small
villages, along the Torre river, is Tarcento, the “Pearl
of Friuli” or the “paradise of holidays” as it has been
called since the end of the nineteenth century due to
the pleasant climate that can be enjoyed here: it was
the most popular summer holiday resort in Friuli. Its
healthy air and landscape have attracted - since the
19th century - scholars and men of letters, as well as
Udine’s nobility that had wonderful villas built here,
among which Villa Moretti, Villa Angeli, Villa Pontoni
and, along the Torre river, Villa delle Rose, the Aga-
Udine Nord
noor Castle and many others. It is still possible to
enjoy the pleasantness of the climate walking along
the Torre river on the path equipped with benches and
lighting at night. Do not miss the medieval borough
of Villafredda in Loneriacco and the tower of the lower castle called Cjscjelàt in Coia. Tarcento is also famous for its traditional events, such as the Epiphany
with Bonfires and the Festival of Hearts, which every
year features the performances of the best folk dance
groups of the world.
The Tomats
Still alive among the inhabitants of Tarcento is the
passion for the carving of the wooden masks called
Tomats, which are worn in the Carnival period. The
Tomats can be seen all year round during the temporary exhibitions organized on the occasion of various
events.

park characterised by forest trees,
which can always be visited. Inside the palace is the Archaeological and Natural Museum, which
features the most important collection of Trilobites in Italy. These
arthropods populated the sea floor in the Palaeozoic Era. The museum displays various specimens
of fossil flora and fauna arranged
in evolutionary and chronological
order, which allow to go through
the evolution of the species through the geological eras that characterised the history of the Earth.
There is also a collection on the
teeth of numerous fossil vertebrates, unique in Italy.

The blockhouse of Mount Bernadia
is a military structure built between 1908 and 1913 to defend the
bridges over the Tagliamento and
prevent the invasion of the Torre valley by the Austro-Hungarian
army. Attached to the blockhouse
are various storehouses, barracks,
sentry boxes, and several underground passages. From the large
square opposite the blockhouse you
will enjoy, especially on clear days,
an excellent view almost over the
whole region, up to the sea. Next
to the blockhouse is the Monument
Lighthouse of the “Julia”, built starting from 1954 in memory of the Alpine soldiers of the “Julia” division
fallen in the war. The monument
represents two cut-off feathers
that rise towards the sky indicating
the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers.
Every year the Alpine soldiers’ gathering and the “Winter Motorcycle
rally of Friendship”, started in 1973
and in which every year thousands
of motorcyclists from all over Italy
and from abroad take part, are held
in the large square opposite the
blockhouse. From the blockhouse
you can reach Mount Pocivalo, where you will find two armoured barracks and a structure, still in excellent conditions, for ammunition and
for the battery’s gunners, dating
back to the First World War.

Lusevera… and beautiful caves!
New Cave of Villanova
Lusevera
… AND BEAUTIFUL CAVES!
The territory of Lusevera is partially comprised in the Julian Pre-Alps Natural Park, in which the
most important natural, historical and cultural peculiarities of the Julian Pre-Alps are protected.
The flora and the fauna are extremely rich and you will have the chance to see hares, wild boars,
foxes, roe deer, deer, chamois, ibex, partridges, black grouses and wood grouses, without forgetting
the presence of the bear and of the lynx
The upper Torre Valley is rich in nature paths that
can be followed by simple hikers, good walkers and
climbers; everywhere one can admire unspoilt nature and some evidence of the ancient history of these places, such as the Roman bridge of Pers. In the
locality of Pian dei Ciclamini you will find the guest
rooms of the Park, with a bookshop and the park’s
information point, a place where you can discover
the environmental peculiarities of the area; there is a
section for visually impaired people with a tactile pla-
stic model representing Friuli’s whole mountain area.
Nearby tourists can put themselves to the test on two
rock climbing practice walls, one of which is called
“lis feminis” and is very technical, and the other is suitable for children as well and is called “ai ciclamini”.
The phenomenon that makes this
area known is a massive Karst
complex with numerous caves of
particular speleological and geological interest. The most important one is the “New Cave of Villanova”, defined as a “contact cave”,
being formed by two types of rock
completely different from each
other. Here the water has exerted
on the rocks two different actions,
shaping tunnels and halls of various sizes and morphology every
few dozens of metres. With almost
9 km of extension, it is the largest
of its kind known in Europe, and it
is the only one to be equipped for
underground tourism. Thanks to
the guided visit to the tourist path,
well-lit and provided with easy
walkways, it is possible to admire
large tunnels of singular shape,
imposing halls and tortuous “canyons”, crossed by the underground
stream and adorned by stalactites,
stalagmites and flowstones of all
shapes and sizes. Those who wish
to discover the hidden secrets of
the New Cave, all year round on
Sundays and holidays, by appointment, can go on guided speleological tours in the innermost parts
of the cave, usually reserved to
speleologists. The geological peculiarities, the multitudes of concretions with their bizarre shapes,
the gentle whisper of the fresh and
pure air that flows through the tunnels and the sound of water, calm
or impetuous, accompany visitors
in an unforgettable experience.
Near Villanova delle Grotte is the
Vigant hamlet, from which one
reaches the homonymous Abyss
of Vigant: through a majestic natural portal one accesses, following
an equipped path, the first part of
the cavity; past this point the cave
is reserved to speleologists who,
with the necessary equipment, can
go down along a sequence of potholes and ponds hollowed out by
water in the rock and called “marmitte dei giganti” (stockpots of
giants). You will then get to the Pre
Oreak Cave, the entrance of which
is in the near Cornappo Valley. The
Vigant-Pre Oreak complex and the
beauty of the area are protected as
a Site of Community Interest.

Medieval Archaeological Museum
In these lands, on the border between the plain and the Alpine ranges, the ancient Roman road network
was guarded by defence towers, which over the centuries have been transformed into castles, thus
creating one of the areas richest in medieval archaeological sites in the region. On these gentle and sunny
slopes grow luxuriant vineyards, from which excellent wines are produced: Verduzzo from Ramandolo,
Picolit and Refosco from Faedis. Many are also the olive groves, from which an olive oil with a particular
and rich taste is extracted.
Nimis is a beautiful location famous for its delicious
wines. From the village of Cergneu starts a fascinating
path in the wood that leads to the remains of the 13thcentury Castle of Cergneu. In the hamlet of Ramandolo, near the 15th-century St. John the Baptist church,
which is situated along the road that climbs to Villanova delle Grotte, you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic
view over Friuli. From the square of Nimis starts the
“walk of Ramandolo” through the vineyards. This path
is well-marked and is recommended in spring, summer and autumn also to families with children.
Attimis, a small town with a path that leads to the
castles of Attimis: not far from the Medieval Archaeological Museum you can climb to the panoramic hillock where you can see the ruins of two castles: the
upper castle, the older of the two, which dates back to
the 12th century, and the lower castle. From the Faris
borough you can reach the castle of Partistagno, built
around the year 1000; it is considered one of the most
fascinating medieval fortifications in Friuli. It is possible to see the house-tower, St. Oswald’s Chapel with
14th-century frescoes, the cistern and the fourteenth-
century palace of the lower circle of walls with elegant double lancet windows.
Faedis, a town surrounded by vineyards and chestnuts, the ideal location for gastronomic and sports
holidays, thanks to the many dozens of kilometres of
paths in the woods, an excellent opportunity for long
walks or mountain bike rides.
The museum aims at preserving
and displaying the remains and
the objects of everyday use of the
castles of the feudal period (10th15th cent.), which still characterize
this territory, along the piedmont
road from Cividale to Noricum.
The path starts with the history
of the fortifications and of their
architectural and technological
evolution. Upstairs you will find
the sections dedicated to hunting,
fishing, breeding and agriculture
in the feudal age, to medieval weapons and suits of armour.
From the hamlet of Subit, known
for the growing of berries (raspberries, mulberries, wild strawberries), start three easy paths suitable
for families with children.
Lusevera - trekking routes for all tastes
This small village characterized
by rural architecture is considered Friuli Venezia Giulia’s balcony
due to the extraordinary view and
is nationally known for the bloody events of February of 1945
at the malghe (shepherd’s huts)
of Porzus, little past the village,
now a national monument. The
shepherd’s huts can be reached
on foot along a marked path that
starts from the square of Porzus.
The path can be partially followed
by car. The near small church of
the Madonne de Sèsule (Virgin of
the Sickle), erected in memory of
the apparition of the Holy Virgin, is
still a pilgrimage destination.
as the village of Prossenicco.
Mountain enthusiasts will enjoy
the paths that lead to Gran Monte
starting from Monteaperta, Cornappo and Montemaggiore.

The circular path starts from Antro or Biacis; it can be followed all
year round and is also suitable for
families with children. The walk
lasts about 30 minutes (difference
in height of 120 metres) and allows
visitors to see the attractions of
Biacis and Antro.

Faedis
The themed path
“Castles of Zucco and Cucagna”
It starts from the borough of S.
Anastasia, is located right below
the castles and it originated when
the castles were built, when there
were the servants’ dwellings and
the sheds; its name derives from
a now disappeared ancient church.
After an about 15-20 minutes’
walk you will get to the castle of
Zucco, at 299 metres above sea
level, where you can admire the
small 16th-century church and a
wonderful view. Proceeding along
the path, after about ten minutes
you will get to the castle of Cucagna, at 357 metres above sea level,
whose rebuilding will be completed soon; particularly fascinating
is the fully renovated imposing tower. After visiting this castle, proceed along the path that leads to
St. Roch’s church. The tour lasts 1
hour and 20 minutes and no specific clothing is required.
The Visitor Centre of Stupizza, the starting point of nice paths
The Visitor Centre of Stupizza is
the starting point of paths suitable
both for adults and children.
Path “On the tracks of bears and
of the others animals of the wood”
An easy and fascinating path that
starts from the Visitor Centre “The
Village of Bears”, skirts the Natisone river and enters a beautiful
wood, rich in Karst rocks, water
and vegetation. The path is enriched by likely bear, lynx and wolf
tracks and by tracks of others
animals of our woods. If followed
attentively, it provides the possibility to observe the real presence
of small and big inhabitants of the
wood (roe deer, wild boars, squirrels, badgers, salamanders, toads
and frogs). The path continues
along the river as far as the Poiana aqueduct intake, in very interesting areas due to the presence of
wild fauna. Duration: 1 hour.
Stupizza-Pradolino Path
The path runs in the gorge between Mount Mia and Lubia, and features a very varied and interesting
landscape due to the rich flora and
fauna. At the beginning of the route we suggest that you visit, with
a short detour, the remains of the
rural village of Predrobac, used
until the early twentieth century
by the inhabitants of the valley to
spend the hot months with their livestock. The path is suitable for families and can be followed all year
round. The path ends at the Bocca
di Pradolino (Mouth of Pradolino)
on the border with Slovenia (7 Km,
difference in height of 300 metres).
Stupizza-Pradolino-Malga Monte
Mia Path
From
the
Stupizza-Pradolino
path it is possible to follow the
old muletrack as far as the malga (shepherd’s hut) of Mount Mia;
this hard route features a variety of
coppice trees and a charming, ageold unspoilt beechwood. On the top
of Mount Mia you can enjoy a beautiful view over the valleys and over
Mount Matajur. (15 Km, difference
in height of about 1,000 metres).
