10th October 2014 [Type text] THE HAILEYBURY HERALD No: 7 HEADLINES by Craig Halsall I would like firstly to thank all Key Stage 2 parents who attended the HM Open Forum this week. It was great to see so many parents willing to give their time in order to share their feedback and ideas as to how we can further improve our school. Some excellent suggestions were made and I will report back next month as to what actions we have taken as a result of our open forums. Thank you – your time is much appreciated. Friends of Haileybury Almaty: We are committed to further engaging parents into our school life. I am delighted therefore to announce that we are setting up a ‘Friends of Haileybury Almaty’ group for parents. The group, chaired by Jo Watson (Y6 teacher) and will have three objectives: 1) to further develop a sense of community at Haileybury Almaty; 2) to help raise funds towards the pupils’ chosen charity; 3) to help promote English in the home. We are looking for around 12 proactive, positive and forward-thinking parents to ensure that the group can be sustainable and effective. Please email Jo Watson at j.watson@haileyburyalmaty.kz by Wednesday 22nd October if you would like to be in this group. You should also briefly explain why and how you could contribute positively to the aims of this group. Twitter – daily updates from the HM: Many parents are already following the school’s Twitter account. I would like to invite all parents and pupils to also follow the HM twitter account. This is an account that I will use daily to share important school messages, thoughts about the education of our children, important reminders about school events, or just good news generally from around our school. If I could therefore invite all parents and pupils to follow me on “Haileybury Almaty@CRhalsall” and stay even more in touch with what is happening in our school. Inter-House Football Competitions: All parents are warmly invited to attend and cheer on your children in both of the following football competitions next week: Year 10, 11, 12 & 13 football competition: Wednesday 15th October, 3.45pm–5.00pm Year 3 and 4 competition**: Thursday 16th October, 1.00pm-2.30pm **Weather Warning: Please note that if poor weather is expected for the Year 3/4 competition, which is due to be held outdoors, the following contingency plan will happen: - Year 3’s competition will be rescheduled to Thursday 16th October, in the Sports Hall - Year 4’s competition will be rescheduled to Thursday 23rd October. A decision will be made by Wednesday 15th October, with parents and pupils being informed if this change needs to happen. Trips: There will be two trips on Tuesday 14th October. Year 7 Geography have a field trip (but will be back in time for their Parents’ Evening!); Year 11 Kazakh are visiting a museum. Parents’ Evenings: Two important events take place next week: Year 9 Parents’ Evening: Tuesday 14th October, 4.00pm-6.00pm, Atrium - Year 7 Parents’ Evening: Thursday 16th October, 4.00pm-6.00pm, Atrium Parents are strongly encouraged to attend in order to discuss your child’s progress and targets for improvement. We also encourage pupils to attend and take a proactive role in the discussion with you and their teachers. ECAs: No secondary ECAs will take place on Tuesday 14th and Thursday 16th October, due to secondary parents’ evenings. Primary ECAs will be unaffected. Oktoberfest Rescheduled: As we have had some poor weather lately, Oktoberfest which was planned to take place on Friday 17th October, will be rescheduled for later in the year when we can be more certain of good weather. It may also be given a new name to reflect its new date! Next Friday will therefore be a normal school day with pupils in full school uniform. Have an enjoyable weekend! Craig Halsall, Headmaster 1 10th October 2014 [Type text] THE HAILEYBURY HERALD No: 7 OUR SCHOOL NEWS: Student Council – Student Voice! The Student Council is an important part of our school. These students are chosen from across the age range to represent their peers and help make our school better. They give us an invaluable students’ perspective on life in school, what they like about their school, and what they would like to change. This week the Student Councillors have had the opportunity to have their say by helping us interview several people who would like to teach at Haileybury Almaty. The students decided on the questions they would like to ask, met the candidates via Skype, and conducted the interviews themselves. All of those who took part have been a credit to the school, and they have provided us with helpful feedback on the interviewees. As one of the candidates said, “[This] is the sort of innovation and 21st century thinking that drew me to the position at Haileybury Almaty”. Egyptian adventure Our topic this term is Ancient Egypt. During our Literacy lesson, we did a piece of extended writing to invent a story about Egyptian gods. We thought how to structure a story and using interesting vocabulary and sentence openers. Alice Billingham, Year 4 teacher Sara very slowly walked in the pyramid and suddenly she fell into a big hole full of different spiders. Sara was very, very scared. Suddenly, she saw Anubis. She was very scared and then Anubis said, “Do you need to get from here?” “Yes” said Sara. “Ok then.” Then she went to school… Favourite Things About Our School… One of my favourite things about our school is the new piano in the school Atrium. Every breaktime students can come along and have a go at playing the piano. It doesn’t matter whether you’re an absolute beginner or a concert pianist – as long as you treat the piano nicely (and put the cover back on when you’re finished), you’re welcome to play! As a result of this new idea, during break times the school is filled with the sound of music. Sometimes it sounds as if a new Beethoven has shown up in school, and sometimes it sounds as if a cat is running up and down on the keyboard. But the sound of the piano is always beautiful, because it’s the sound of someone learning. What’s your favourite thing about school? In it is nice. I learn a new song with the guitar. Photo: Louis Deviaene 4GN in Football ECA And I am goalkeeper in football. And goalkeeper is nice. Louis Deviaene, 4GN Football reviews On September 30, 2014, after lunch, TSIS, AIS, KIS, Miras, and Haileybury students met at the Haileybury school soccer field. We were about to start the soccer tournament. Everyone was very excited! Before we started the matches, we heard some important rules from some teachers from Haileybury. Photo: Football competition among Y4 pupils On September 30th, our school went to Haileybury School to play soccer after lunch time. We went there, and started at 1:00. We played soccer games, and Yoon Seo’s breakaway was fantastic! Ju Yeon and I were the goalies. Ju Yeon was an awesome and fantastic goalie! I think I was good goalie too, but not awesome or fantastic. Then we walked to our benches and the coaches from every school got their 4th and 5th grade group ready for the game. When 5th and 4th grades were playing the match, coaches from every school got 2nd and 3rd grade students on the match too! Every school tried their best. Then we kept on playing the matches with some other schools. Everyone felt happy that we could score a goal. Later when some teachers announced the winner, our school and AIS were in 4th place together. But we were glad that we could try our best. The first place winner was Miras, second was Haileybury! Then everyone went to their school. I think everybody had a good time, and I had a fantastic time! Woo Jeong Lee, Y4 TSIS Photo: Football competition among AIS, KIS, TSIS, Miras, and Haileybury pupils Schools who were there were AIS, KIS, TSIS, Miras, and Haileybury. In that soccer game, Miras won for 9-10 years old, and Haileybury won for 7-8 years old. We lost, but it was exciting and fun and it was perfect weather to have a soccer tournament! There once was a man named McLee And he had to pay a big fee But he had no money He only had honey He didn’t even have his house key! There was once a girl named Flakes And all she ever did was eat cakes But when she found out They were all made of trout She refused to swim in the lakes. Blair Schooling, 5 DM Photo: Tair Sarsenov 5 BT, showing his winner’s cup and certificate I have been playing golf for about 2 years and I really like it. My favourite place to play golf is Zhailjau Golf Club. My golf teacher is called Kurtis and he is really fun. I think Rory McIIroy is the best golf player and when I grow up I want to be just like him. Tair Sarsenov, 5 BT Myths and Legends In Year 7 this term we have been looking at ‘Myths and Legends’. One of our activities was to retell a myth in the format of a cartoon strip. A Green Week Limerick about Recycling: There once was a puppy named Cake Who sadly was drowned in a lake The family knew That resources were few So they recycled the puppy as steak. LaMascus Melana, 5DMC Limerick poems In Year 5 English lessons 2 weeks ago we have been writing limerick poems. I have written more than one. So I have decided to write down my favourite three down. Photo: Philip Matijevic, 7SJ presented this wonderful storyboard, worthy of an Attitude to Learning level 5, due to his outstanding effort. There once was a girl named Fire. And all she ever did was admire A cute little boy Who was full of great joy But then she found out he was a vampire! Pupils were able to reinterpret the myth how they wished, including words and images, but their versions had to include the key features of the original story and retain the structure of a myth. Philip Matijevic, 7SJ 4 10th October 2014 [Type text] THE HAILEYBURY HERALD No: 7 Canteen Concerts Every two weeks our Music Department organizes concerts in the canteen. This is so that pupils can enjoy their meal accompanied by pleasant music played by our talented students. These concerts are not formal. You can either plan to play your piece ahead or one can play any musical piece from, as Mrs. Thomas calls it, the ‘Magical Book’. The book is a collection of songs. This helps students to be less shy while performing, because some of the attention is directed at eating. But this experience will help pupils to perform on proper concerts better as they will feel more relaxed. After pupils have finished their meals they can enjoy music whilst sitting on special seats provided in the canteen. Aiganym Raimzhanova, 8DP 5 My Teddy’s mummy This week was very exciting week for me. We have learnt about Ancient Egyptians and during our Humanities lesson we made mummies. For this I brought my Teddy to school. All I needed was a roll of toilet paper. Can you imagine how many rolls of toilet paper you’ll need if you decide to make your own mummy?! This was the way my Teddy looked after my mummification. 4GN Year 11 Biology Debate Our biology class had a debate this week on an artificial insemination and should or should it not be allowed. That was a truly exciting experience, which was also useful both for the participants and the audience. Personally, I was in the audience and learned many interesting facts about artificial insemination, found out different opinions about this topic and heard a heated dispute. There were two sides: proposition and opposition. Main argument of proposition team was that all people have rights to have a child, and therefore, artificial insemination should be allowed, if necessary. The opposition answered that it leads to overpopulation. To be honest, both statements were true, therefore, it was hard to vote for any team at the end. However, the majority voted for the proposition because it everyone understood that despite some disadvantages of this operation, it is a huge medicine progress. All in all, I would like to say that all participants were prepared and confident, which illustrates hard work and interest in the subject. By Lara Ertl 11 PD 10 October 2014 Year 1 News Year 2 News English English This week we have been writing our own version of ‘Aaargh Spider’, called ‘Aaargh Snake!’ We have been role-playing different ideas in preparation for writing our very own story based on Anansi and the Tiger! Sixth Form Open Evening, Tuesday 7th October This was well-attended with students from Year 11 and their parents finding out about the benefits of A Levels, the subjects available, and our expectations of students studying A Levels at Haileybury Almaty. A short presentation was followed by a Subject Fair where students and parents could talk to Heads of Faculties and A Level teachers and students about studying in the Sixth Form at Haileybury Almaty. This will be followed up with a Sixth Form Taster Day on Monday 24th November, when Year 11 will have the opportunity to attend Sixth Form-type lessons to give them more insights into the subjects available and to ensure that they make the right choices when choosing their A Level options. During lunchtime last Monday, Year 12 and Year 13 students attended a presentation by Miss Dania Kurd, a Primary Teacher new to Haileybury Almaty who, has previously worked for Student Services and in Admissions Offices for several UK universities. She very helpfully outlined the UCAS application process and pointed out what does and does not work in gaining the attention of Admissions Officers! She also spoke about some of the challenges and opportunities of university life. Although Year 13 are currently finalising their UCAS applications and choice of universities that they wish to apply for, Year 12 need to start thinking now.
