Clunes: where the war began

Clunes became a war zone for
one week in October as filming for
the new ABC television series
Tomorrow When the War Began
hit town during October 5-9th.
Fans of the John Marsden series
of teen fiction bestsellers flocked
into town to catch a glimpse of the
action.
Onlookers were shuffled into
shops and laneways to make way for
the call of ‘Action!’ And was there
ever action!
Wirrawee for a week, Clunes
was transformed into a seaside
town, with palm trees, bunting, surf
boards and a much longed-for
hardware store creating a fun set
and great talking point.
And then there were the tanks,
military personnel, rifles, dramatic
stunts, cars ablaze and our beloved
Town Hall gone up in smoke...
Some 50 locals were involved in
the shoot as extras, security, special
effects helpers, crowd control,
vehicle helpers and gave use of their
shops and cars. Locals Graeme and
June Johnstone spent two days on
set as extras. Graeme spoke with

expressed how impressed he was
with the community involvement
and co-operation.
The six-part series, which is
anticipated for release early next
year, covers the first of the highly
acclaimed seven-book series and
features cast from the 2010 film
adaptation as well as well-known

Stewart from Packed to the Rafters
and Sibylla Budd from Winners and
Losers.

has decided to support the community wishes and
reinstate the older style seats in Fraser Street in their
original positions. The good people of Clunes will be
delighted.

The Homecrafts Committee of the Clunes and
District Agricultural Society will be launching their
Cookbook Showstoppers – Cooking the Clunes Show Way
on Sunday 8th November, 2015 at the Clunes Town
Hall at 2.00pm with a High Tea.
The Cookbook has been published to
c o m m e m o r a t e 5 0 y e a r s o f t h e Ho m e c r a f t s
Committee, which was started back in 1964 and was
originally called the Ladies Committee.
A Gallipoli Story
Joshua Funder - Watson’s Pier
Stan Watson was among the first
ashore at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915,
and survived battle, fear and disease to
build the pier at Anzac Cove from
which so many men later escaped. He
faced what seemed like an impossible
mission: to get every man out alive.
Watson never claimed to be the last man to leave
Gallipoli, but through to the very end he played his part
and became a hero.
The Committee was formed to help the men with
decisions such as the number of scones that should be
displayed.
Members of the original committee and their
family are still enthusiastic contributors to the Clunes
Show.
The Cookbook is a collection of family favourites,
collected by members of the committee and features
many recipes entered at the Clunes Show over the
years.

away from that fatal shore, Watson took a
slow train to visit his family for Christmas
and decided to finally tell his life story - to
Joshua Funder, his great-grandson.

Another highlight was the presence of the Korean
Master Onggi potter Mr Hyang Jong Oh. In addition
to heading the judging panel, he also conducted two
days of workshops at Clayspace in Daylesford and a
very informative talk at the Clunes Warehouse. All
were well attended

Clayspace, Clayworks and the Hepburn Shire Council.
As always, in Clunes, without our volunteers, this
exhibition would not have been such a success. Thank

December 2015 will see the 40th anniversary of the
opening of our wonderful building.

Place a single flower in remembrance of those who
died in war.
The Clunes RSL Sub-Branch will conduct a
commemorative service at the Cenotaph, cnr. Fraser
and Service Streets, Clunes commencing at approx. 10
to 11am so that a minute’s silence can be observed at
11am
At the conclusion of this service all present will be
invited to place a single flower on the Cenotaph as an
act of personal remembrance.

During the next few weeks, Poppies will be on sale.
All proceeds from the RSL Poppy Appeal go towards
the Welfare work of the RSL in providing assistance for
War Veterans and Dependants, Veterans and Widows
Homes, Care of the Aged, Family Welfare, Vocational
Guidance, and Hospital Visiting.
Residents of Clunes will benefit from a recent
donation by the All Nations Masonic Lodge to support
welfare programs at Clunes Community Health Centre.
Clunes Museum Update
The Masonic Lodge has for some years been
making a donation in support of emergency
requirements such as food vouchers and short term
accommodation to meet the needs of the local
community.
Elections were held in August for the Committee of
Management of Clunes Museum 2015/6. Prior to the
election, Judith Fawcett and Pat Cook announced their
retirement from their present positions of President
and Curator. Both these ladies have been the backbone
of the museum for a long time and they can be very
proud of their achievements. Fortunately for us they
are staying on to guide us.
The donation was matched dollar-for-dollar by the
United Grand Lodge of Victoria with a total of $600
presented to Trish Collocott, CEO of Hepburn Health.
“This is an invaluable contribution which will
pro vide suppor t for vulnerable people in our
community, “said Trish Collocott. “We greatly
appreciate the longstanding support of the Clunes
Masonic Lodge.”
The cheque was presented by Worshipful Master
Ray Jessup and Senior Warden Gary Elliott.
“The staff at Clunes Community Health provide a
great service to the Clunes community and we are very
pleased to support their work,” said Ray Jessup.

Clunes Makers Market

A new and regular event is happening in Clunes in
November. The organising committee of the Clunes
Makers Market are happy to announce that the
inaugural market will be launched on Sunday 8
November between 9am-2pm. in the front garden area
of the Club Hotel in Fraser Street.
With a combined sense of friendliness, fun and
community spirit it is envisaged that the Clunes
Makers Market will provide a monthly active artisan
space for the people of Clunes and for the growing
number of visitors to the region to enjoy. There will be
various artisans and makers exhibiting their work and

Neighbourly Natter
Neighbourhood Houses across the country play an
amazing role in enabling a community to come
together, and initiate activities that pro vide
opportunities to learn something new, socialise with
others, and just generally enjoy yourself.
In Clunes, our activities have sparked more than
just learning opportunities, it’s beginning to result in a
whole new area of industry.
Volunteers with the Community Garden and Men’s
Shed have recently started making nesting boxes and
planter boxes all in time for breeding season and spring
planting. While the Small Engine Workshop which we
hold every Thursday has been repairing second hand
lawnmowers so fast that we now have an excess of
them available to sell if anyone needs one!
At the Welding workshop, participants went from
working on personal projects they needed done, to
helping create a trailer from scratch. I don’t know
what is being crafted at Woodwork for Women lately,
but I know that doors, chairs, cupboards and a chaise
longue have all found their way to being projects in
that class.
Make friends, learn a new skill or apply an old one,
and tick off your odd jobs to do list at the same time by
participating in just some of the practical classes

What don’t you know about Burlesque? Burlesque
started as a form of comedic theatre, and still retains
that performance element today. It is as much about
feathers and fancy gloves, as it is about creating a
character and learning the moves to tell an often, fun
and flirtatious story. Your tutor will be Bella Puckerlips,
who has been performing Burlesque for the past 5
years, with a background in dance and drama, who has
been performing with her troupe Bliss Bombs

Nesting and Planting Boxes
Available for sale at Clunes Neighbourhood
House
Volunteers in the Community Garden and Men’s
Shed have been producing a range of nesting boxes for
different animals out of untreated wood for sale. Prices
range from $10 up and these sturdy designs have been
built for budgies, possums and kookaburra’s so far.
We haven’t neglected those spring planting either,
producing a range of planting boxes in a variety of
styles. All boxes have been constructed in natural
t i m b e r t h a t i s u n t r e a t e d . Po p i n t o C l u n e s

from $40 for a medium sized vegetable box, to upright
planter boxes for $60.

Retailers Extraordinaire: 5 - Ken & Margaret Gibson

You might think there is nothing very interesting
about a Newsagency. Every town and suburb has one,
and they all sell much the same things. But the Clunes
Newsagency really is something. It’s a central place in
the town and Ken and Margaret are friends to all. You
can buy your usual newspapers, magazines, stationery
and the like, but you can also have a chat, meet and
greet other regulars, and check out what is going on in
town. You can buy tickets to local functions, submit
your entries for the Clunes Show, or various other
competitions, and hear the latest local news.
Ken and Margaret came to Clunes 22 years ago.
They wanted to buy a small business in a country town,
close to Ballarat as their children were at school and
university there. Ken had taken a redundancy from his
job in a bank and to operate a newsagency was a good
option for change. They had lived in small towns before
and “knew how they work”. Fortunately the Clunes
Newsagency was up for sale, so they applied.
In those days, prospective newsagents were
interviewed by representatives of several newspapers,
Tattersalls and The VANA Board of Management (the
Victorian Authorised Newspapers Association). You
didn’t just hand over your cash. Nowadays it is much
easier, since the industry has been de-regulated, but
Ken and Margaret had to go through several interviews,
like job interviews.
Ken had long been involved in local football and
cricket, and when they attended the last interview, he
had an achilles injury, from playing cricket. That
impressed the panel, who said he must have been wellinvolved in community life. So Ken and Margaret were
successful in their application and Clunes has
benefitted ever since.
The newsagency sells a wide range of additional
goods, including art materials, toys, gifts, Christmas
decorations, books, even reading glasses, and you can
have photocopying done or buy Tattslotto tickets.
Anything you might need which isn’t there, Ken and
Margaret will source for you. With Ken’s experience as
a Bank Manager, he is well-qualified to operate an
agency of the Bendigo Bank. This is a real boon for
Clunes, since the two banks which were here closed
down some years ago.
Ken and Margaret love their work as they get to
know pretty well everybody in town. They welcome
newcomers and visitors. People ask them questions and
they are able to give out useful information. They
“know the pulse of the town” and are involved in
everything that’s important.
Ken has been active in the CTDA (Clunes Tourism
and Development Association) for over 20 years and
helps to promote many local events through the
newsagency. Ken and Margaret play a huge role in
welcoming newcomers to town and introducing them
to others, largely through attending regular “drinks”
places - in past years Robbie G’s Wine Bar, and more
recently “Drinks at the Gallery”
Ken and Margaret see themselves as an information
hub and a conduit for linking people. They are wellsuited to their multi-faceted roles, as they are both
gregarious and cheerful by nature, and have a great
ability to get along with everyone. It is great to go into
the newsagency and know you will find a friendly
greeting, but never gossip.
Ken and Margaret feel they have gained a lot from
the town of Clunes, and are keen to continue
contributing towards it. When they retire, which may
happen in the next year or two, they both plan to
become more active as volunteers. We can only hope
that the newsagency is then sold to another couple who
will continue the great cooperative work that Ken and
Margaret have been doing there.

The Brigade will be in the main street on Saturday
mornings with information on Fire Plans and preparing
your property for the fire season. Brigade members are
more than happy to work with you to develop a fire
plan for you and your family.
At the time of publication, it is unknown exactly
when fire restrictions will come into force however it is
expected that it will be earlier than previous years.

Articles from the Clunes Guardian and Gazette - November 1886.
There were a number of side shows and
amusements of various descriptions on the ground,
including a bazaar and merry-go-round, the two latter
being “run” in connection with the hospital. The
arrangements of the show were excellent, Mr C. Terrill
and Mr T. D. Hardy, the secretaries, were as usual
indefatigable, and to their services the success of the
exhibition is materially ascribable. It may be added that
the prizes awarded aggregate £560 in value. The
takings at the gate amounted to £95 13s 6d, a sum
considerably exceeding any gate money received
previously in Clunes on like occasions.
