As part of Education Through Music’s mission to enhance students’ academic performance, it is engaging academic teachers through its Professional Development series, the most recent of which took place on January 11, 2016 at P.S. 213 in Queens. ETM presents Professional Development workshops to give teachers the chance to examine best practices through a musical lens. Teachers are led through a series of interactive musical activities where teachers of other academic disciplines roleplay as students. Musical content is stripped from the lesson and teaching strategies are examined. “By utilizing a common language between academic subjects and music, teachers are able to create connections so that students can transfer their knowledge across multiple disciplines, thus educating the whole child,” says Meryl Cullom, Assistant Program Director, in charge of curriculum and integration. Principals of ETM partner schools were also invited to choose between several 30 to 55 minute offerings – such as Music and Math, Active Listening, and Social Studies in Rhythm and Rhyme – offered semiannually to help academic teachers understand how music can help them achieve their classroom goals. P.S. 213 teachers took part in Story Soundtracks, a professional devel- opment offering that uses music to deepen participants’ understand of a published or student generated text. For example, teachers read the story “Barn Dance” to the songs “Big Country” and “Fur Elise,” and examined how the mood and understanding of the story differentiated based on the accompanying music. “Music can change the context of a piece, can act as a partner to help shy kids with presentation skills, and can help everyone with expression,” Cullom says. “The music helps students to reach another level of understanding. It also informs the way the reader reads. It highlights certain words and draws out emotions and responses to the text.” Teachers have expressed a better understanding of the connections between the music and academic disciplines, by participating in these Professional Development events. They noticed a positive effect on students’ academic performance after leveraging what students are learning in the music class. “I really enjoyed listening to how the mood changed when stories were being read aloud. I would definitely want to try it in my classroom,” states a P.S. 213 and Professional Development participant. Run the 2016 TCS NYC Marathon in Support of ETM! Team ETM is looking for runners for the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon. To participate as a charity runner, team members raise money to support ETM music programs. The events give parents the opportunity to see their children perform, and celebrate the progress students are making in musical learning. The events are held early morning before school, so parents can drop off their children and then stay for the concerts. Once the students perform, parents are then invited to enjoy breakfast and meet with school administration and staff. “Keeping parents engaged in learning is critical to students’ learning,” said Katherine Damkohler, exeuctive director of Education Through Music. “The Breakfast with the Band and Orchestra programs allow us to have a positive and celebratory touch point with parents, and to keep them excited about their children’s education.” “Through these programs, parents are able to make sense of the squeaks and honks they have been hearing at home, as students perform polished pieces as part of their band and orchestra,” said Pauliks. P.S. 76 music teacher Jessica Parr directs Bronx band students at Breakfast with the Band held on February 4, 2016. Holiday Concerts Showcase Student Learning ETM partner schools held holiday concerts in December, showcasing the progress students are making in general music classes. Students from P.S. 39, a new ETM partner school in Staten Island, performed in their first holiday concert. Students from P.S. 195 in the Bronx perform at their holiday concert, under the direction of music teacher Sean Gallagher. 5 Education Through Music Newsletter Government Officials Visit ETM Programs City and state officials are showing support for music education by attending ETM concerts.
