General Health Tip
Can a Healthy Diet Prevent Memory Loss?
There’s no cure for memory loss, but some studies show that lifestyle changes may help keep
your memory sharp. More research is needed, but consider increasing or adding the following
foods for a brain-healthy diet:
•
•
•
•
•
Beans - one study showed that high levels vitamins B-6 and B-12 are linked to
lower levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that has been linked to Alzheimer’s
disease.
Oranges – some studies show vitamin C can have a protective effect for the brain
and dissolve toxic plaques that are found in individuals with memory loss.
Almonds – vitamin E which promotes healthy blood flow, especially to the brain.
Fish –scientists have found people with low levels of omega-3 had more brain
shrinkage and poor performance on memory tests.
Spinach – this leafy green is packed with more than 15 antioxidants that have been
show in studies to inhibit the formation of plaques that build up in those with
Alzheimer’s disease.

SixSix-year old Angie, and her fourfour-year old brother, Joel, were sitting together in church.
Joel giggled, sang and talked out loud.
Finally, his big sister had had enough. "You're not supposed to talk out loud in
church."
"Why? Who's going to stop me?" Joel asked.
Angie pointed to the back of the church and said, "See those two men standing by the
door? They're hushers."
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED
. . . ???
Have you ever found yourself wondering about something that is going on in our church or
within our church family ?? We would like to encourage an increase in communication
among the congregation, committees, council and Pastor. Just write down your question,
comment or concern and place in the offering plate. Please include your name, so that
the council, appropriate committee and/or Pastor can respond to your comments.
THANK YOU.....

you so much for your offerings.
Please know that you are invited to attend our Freed for LIFE dinner

Aging Health Tip
How Can I Keep the Mind Sharp?
Across the nation, older adults are keeping their minds sharp by continuing to learn new
things, meet new people and get involved. This activity, according to many researchers,
has limitless positive effects for all adults, especially as we get older. They say that
learning new things, whether it’s a new dance, picking up a cooking glass, exploring
history, or learn a few new phrases in French, can improve communication and
socialization, ease pain from chronic illness, reduce stress, give meaning and purpose,
improve cognitive abilities and could possibly help combat memory loss.
So what are you waiting for?! Pick up that new hobby you’ve always thought about,
watch that History Channel documentary or join a new card club. Your health will thank
you.

GOD’S WORK - OUR HANDS

MARK YOUR CALENDARS
There are approximately 95 fire hydrants that need to be repainted in the south part of
York. The parks and recreation dept will supply the paint, as well as a weed eater (I guess to
find some of the hydrants!), wire brushes to clean off the hydrants before painting, and
brushes. I think this will be a project all ages can participate in, since there is no climbing
involved.
We had ice cream as a treat for the workers after we were done last year, and I think we should
do that again this year. So we'll maybe set the working time from 1:00 to 4:00, and then meet
somewhere (like a park) for ice cream afterwards.
Outreach Ministry Committee, Carolyn Sandall, chairman
This is an exciting time……
Classes are starting Wednesday,
September 9th.
Be at church at 5:30 pm for supper.
After a time of worship, it is time for
classes, approximately 6 to 7 p.m.
This included Confirmation students.
RED, WHITE AND BLUE FOR YORK, TOO!
Yorkfest is September 10 thru 12. This year First Evangelical Lutheran Church is
going to have a float in the parade and we are hoping for lots of volunteers to help
decorate the float and/or walk in the parade with the float passing out bottled water
and small bags of candy.
Come join the fun…...volunteer!
Call the church office (402-362-3063) or talk to Pastor Bud.
We sold 58 Yorkfest - First Evangelical Lutheran Church T-shirts and hope
everyone will be wearing them on that day (the 12th) for sure.
