BAND ON THE RUN!

Billy Heschl, Class of 2011 and resident of Westchester, didn’t take long to
make a dent in the music industry. Guitarist for Blood Red Boots, Billy and
his fellow band members captured the “WGN’s Rock & Roll Breakthrough
Band” this past June. And while the band has officially been together for
only seven months, Billy’s interest in music dates much longer.
“I picked up the guitar before I entered eighth grade,” Billy related. “I
liked a lot of the classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Boston. I always
enjoyed any guitar-driven music.”
While Blood Red Boots had an impressive run before the WGN contest,
including an already scheduled Midwest tour to Nashville from late July to
early August, winning the competition was a welcome boost. “There is no
doubt that venues we play at will enjoy hearing that we won a contest like
we did and getting gigs will come a little easier. Still, it helps when people
continue to follow us and show up at the places we play. Our support so
far has been phenomenal and we hope it continues to grow.”
WGN’s contest began with 91 bands. With the second round, based on online voting and bands' musicality, 10
bands survived. The next round saw only two bands make it to the finals, Blood Red Boots being one of them. “I
really wasn’t that nervous the night before the final competition,” Billy confessed. “I was very confident in our
guys. I believe and trust them. We have excellent musicians and a great vocalist and, outside of a few butterflies
on stage, I felt very good about our chances.” Those band members include Cyrus Johnson (bass), Keith Patrick
(vocalist), Eric Hays (keys), Zach Barvian (drums) and Billy, whose Carvin DC127 now accompanies his backup
vocals.
“Our band has a great energy and the diversity of our group helps to showcase our talent.” That talent will lead
them into the I. V. Lab Studios in Chicago where Blood Red Boots will collect the WGN contest’s first prize $10,000 worth of studio recording time. The band will be able to record five to six songs on their way to producing
a CD. “We have some merchandise already, including a home-recorded three-song CD but the plan is to expand
our repertoire.”
Besides the band, Billy is a full-time student. He will be a sophomore at Elmhurst College, majoring in music
business.

Both Service with a Smile and Service for a
Smile are located at the Westchester
office of Dr. Anthony Lumpkin, Class of
1980. After graduating from St. Joe’s,
Dr. Lumpkin attended Loyola University of
Chicago for his undergraduate and DDS
degrees. Opening his own dental office
was put on hold, however, for a few
reasons.
“I was very excited about opening my
own practice,” Dr. Lumpkin related, “but knowing that once I jumped in full force there was no looking back, I
chose a preliminary experience.” That experience was to join the United States Army, something Dr. Lumpkin did
not think about while at St. Joe’s or at Loyola. “I had just gone through board exams, I had never really been out
of the area and I was looking for other ways to broaden my experiences, grow more personally and pick up more
solid clinical experiences in dentistry.”
That was accomplished when Dr. Lumpkin was stationed in Germany, where he spent most of his military time,
which covered 1990 – 1993. “Serving in the Army provided me with some great hands-on experiences. After that
I felt ready to be on my own.”
Dr. Lumpkin moved back into the area
where he shared an office with a colleague
while working in the evenings in Chicago. In
1995, Dr. Lumpkin purchased his own
practice, a highlight second only to that of
getting married the same year.
Both his practice and his family share his
dedication. “Patient satisfaction is a
primary reward for me personally,
especially relative to a program I began
about two years ago – an emergency care
program. It’s a great feeling to be able to
provide relief to people, especially if I am
their last resort. It’s one of the aspects of
the job I enjoy.” Family members are also
involved in the business. “My wife is not in the office, per se, but she does a great deal with the marketing and
promotion of the business and my son, who has expressed an interest in dentistry, comes around to get a sense
of all that is involved in meeting the needs of patients.”

School News…
Chargers name Lasallian Educator of the Year

The St. Joseph High School administration recently announced this year’s recipient of the
Lasallian Educator of the Year. David Kanak, member of both the English Department and the
Admissions Team, completed his sixth year at St. Joe’s and has made a profound impact in that
short time.
“It was no surprise to me when I had found out Mr. Kanak received the award,” commented
Tricia Devereux, Director of Admissions. “He is a role model to all here within the St. Joseph
community. I witness the dedication that he puts forth on a daily basis. Within the classroom
I see that he gives his all to his students and brings out their god-given talents. I also witness
the dedication that he gives to the success of our school. Becoming a member of the
admissions team this year, was a job that he took on willing and with much pride in himself and our school. In
addition, I think I speak on behalf of the entire faculty that Mr. Kanak is someone who not only is a colleague, but a
treasured friend.”
Mr. Kanak was presented the award at the Senior Baccalaureate Ceremony and was surprised when members of his
family joined him at the moment he received his medallion.
ALWAYS YOUNG AT HEART
Sr. Marilyn Hopewell visits St. Joe’s!

Sister Marilyn will always be remembered as the consummate
educator – demanding superior work, requiring self-disciplined
habits (occasionally having to administer the discipline herself!) and
taking pride in the efforts of her students. God bless her!

On July 10th, Sister Marilyn visited the school she knew and loved
from 1973 to 1990. She sat down with Gene and I and had nothing
but good memories to share with us as she reminisced about her
students and coworkers those many years.
Those who knew Sister were aware that when she left St. Joe’s at the age of 63 (she is now a young 85!), she was about
to begin another chapter in her life. At St. Joe’s she had the distinction of being named the first Lasallian Educator of
the Year when the school instituted the honor in 1990. When she left the Chargers, she traveled east to Philadelphia
(she has family in Maryland) and Sister became the first African-American nun to be appointed principal in the
Archdiocese of Philadelphia. She later founded a school, with sponsors insisting it be named Hopewell Academy.
Unfortunately, resources were unable to support the school and it closed after ten years, allowing Sister to retire after
over sixty years in Catholic education.
Sister’s life before and during St. Joe’s included a monumental event. She founded Black Catholic Revival but almost left
the Archdiocese of Chicago when Cardinal Cody insisted she curtail that effort. When the Holy Father then published a
statement calling for a revival in the Catholic Church, Sister Marilyn’s efforts were not scrutinized and her work quickly
became significant in 28 parishes. To this day, when she visits parishes around the country where the program is active,
she is seated in the front and recognized by the community as the founder of Black Catholic Revival.
If St. Joe’s created a Mount Rushmore of its own, guarantee Sister Marilyn would be one of the faces majestically
looking out on the young men for whom she endlessly labored!
Charger Visits CLTV Studio

Joe Genova, Class of 2015 and resident of Westchester, visited the CLTV studio to visit
with David Kaplan, host of Chicago Tribune Live and the Chicago Cubs pre and post game
shows.
Joe sat in on a live broadcast as a guest of Mr. Kaplan. Joe had the chance to tour the
studio and met one on one with Mr. Kaplan who was an awesome host.
Joe has an interest in broadcasting for his future. Could we have a future celebrity among
us?”

Westchester Fun Fest
Last weekend, St. Joseph High School celebrated the last Westchester Fun Fest with the Westchester Community.
The Booster Club had great success at the Corn Booth and the Football Team enjoyed facilitating their dunk tank
fundraiser. Bruce DeSanto, St. Joseph High School Athletic Director, commented, “We are sad to see the fest go,
but are grateful for all the support from our parents, alumni and friends throughout the years and especially for
their hard work in making this last year, the best year!”
Additionally, Gil Hesslau, Class of 1980 and Head Coach of the Freshman/Sophomore Football Team, shared the
following message regarding the Football Dunk Tank Fundraiser at the fest...
“I want to thank you all for your help in making our fundraiser a huge success. Along with the funds that were
raised, we made many more friends of St. Joe's and brought smiles to many children's faces throughout the day.
There were numerous St. Joe's students, mostly football players, but several other young men and women that
chipped in to help, proudly representing our school. Our coaches were great as dunkees, namely Coach Curali,
who may have a future as a carnival barker if he needs the job. A big thank you for making this fundraiser a
touchdown!”
