1 HELLO FROM THE BASH BUNKER Well can you believe
1 Variety - the Children’s Charity 47 Herbert Street Artarmon NSW 2064 Stuart Telfer – P (02) 9819 1009 F (02) 9437 3588 M 0425 277 673 E stuart.telfer@variety.org.au Web www.variety.org.au/nsw HELLO FROM THE BASH BUNKER Well can you believe it?!?!?! Easter is around the corner!!!!!!! So just a short, Electronic Bash Bulletin to let you know a few things and by clicking HERE you can go to the full version with the FUNDRAISERS that are coming up along with CARS FOR SALE and the regular updates on dos and don’ts etc. THE MOTORING EVENTS INFORMATION NIGHT (AKA M.E.I.N.) Firstly, our next M.E.I.N., is this Wednesday night, April 16th, at the Gladesville RSL @ 4 Linsley Street, Gladesville starting from 6pm. It is a great opportunity to talk to Bashers and mechanics about building or maintaining a Bash car so make the effort to come along on these nights. We welcome Bashers, 4WD Adventurers, friends and interested newcomers from 6pm with proceedings getting underway at 7.30pm. And, and, and as usual there will be a raffle on the night – and, and, and – as usual – we are scratching for prizes! So if you have any leftover promotional items or anything, please bring them along to help boost the prize pool. Thank you in advance for your assistance here. So look forward to seeing you on Wednesday night. BREAKING NEWS: THE BRISBANE START IS NOW CONFIRMED We were notified late last week that we will be starting from SUNCORP Stadium at a more respectable time! More on this in the next Bash Bulletin. THOUGHT OF THE MONTH All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism. 2 LOOKING FOR NEW ENTRANTS At a recent Motoring Events Committee Meeting our Chairman, Brian Hoare from BB1, suggested we should be sharing the 30th Anniversary Bash with more (Virgin) entrants. So we need your help to spread the “Gospel” about how good the Bash is and what an experience it is and your friends shouldn’t miss out on it! There were many ways discussed that might be an incentive to help you find a new entrant – perhaps – a friend who has always said, “I’ve gotta do the Bash one day!” Well here is an incentive for you, you turn a prospect into a Virgin Basher (whether he buys or builds a new Bash car) and he brings a new crew along, paying the entry fee of $8,500 then we’ll give you a credit of $8,500 on top of your already paid $8,500 which of course equals $17,000 and the first Fundraising Trophy, the Variety Cup is yours. Let’s be clear, you still have to raise the initial $8,500. Plenty of cars listed at the bottom of the printed version of the Bash Bulletin and by clicking HERE you will be taken to the BB for perusal. C’mon, let’s lift the figures on this important 30th Anniversary Bash! UPDATE: Russell Burns, from Team Stainless, has done something about this as a friend of his called me last week, he’s purchased a car and wants to enter for this year. Well done Russell. EXITING NEW EVENT ON OUR CALENDAR As mentioned last month, we are putting another event onto our calendar and we are seeking support from you, your supporters and your associates and friends to ensure we get the show on the road. The event is a “Postie Bike Dash.” The timing will be in the first week of November 2014 and will be a six day event from Sunday 2nd and return on Friday 7th. The course will take us up the coast and then over the Great Divide to the New England and then down to the Hunter Valley and back into Newcastle. It will be run along the lines of the Bash with an entry donation and meal money factor with every one paying and booking their own accommodation and fuel. The costing’s are as follows: Entry Donation $500 Balance Donation/Fundraising $1,500 Meal Money $450 Please give us a call or email to register your interests or you may know someone that would enjoy the event let them know and have them give us a call. This is being organised out of our Newcastle Regional Office and the boss there, Victor Sheil, would like to hear from you on (02) 4965 4911 or 0410 692 262. You can also email Victor on victor.sheil@varietynsw.org.au UPDATE: For those who were at our last M.E.I.N., I suggested this included the Postie Bike – well – I was wrong on this point, you need to supply your own Postie Bike. 3 FROM THE DESK OF SALLY ROSS Everyday Hero - In order to make sure your Everyday Hero page is as up to date as possible, we have organised for any funds which come in via cheque, direct Debit or cash to the office for your car will once a month (at the beginning of the next month)be added to your page. Goodie Bags - I’m now approaching companies for products to include in our Bash ‘Goodie Bags’ if you have any contacts for products that might be useful, fun, yummy or interesting to include please let me (Sally) know. Depending on the product we will generally request 400 (for one per person) or 150 (for one per car). Call me (Sally) on 9819 1016 or email me on sally.ross@varietynsw.org.au FROM THE FUNDRAISING DESK OF ALEXIS Hi Everybody, On behalf of Woolworths and Variety, we raised $4,645.10 from Friday and Saturday at the recent Camden Show. And guess what, 35% of that was in the pouring rain. If it had been 100% fine weather we would have raised another $2,000. All in all a GREAT RESULT. To check it out, Facebook users…search Capture Camden and see all the awesome, official show photography. Truly some breath taking shots and thanks again to those Bash cars that supported it. Alexis Caldwell Ph: (02) 9819 1025 E: acaldwell@varietynsw.org.au HERE’S ANOTHER ONE FOR YOUR DIARY – THE VARIETY BASH GOLF DAY We are currently putting together a Basher’s Golf Day which will be played at the well-presented and FLAT Carnarvon Golf Club at Lidcombe. This is Reg Armstrong’s club and we’ve met with Reg, along with the GM of the club, and they are extremely keen to assist us on the day. In fact they are hiring in additional motorised golf buggies so everyone gets to ride around the course. Still plenty of details to be finalised as I said but a possible date is Friday 31st October. Packages are being finalised but if you want to get in early you can sponsor a hole for $2,000 which will include four players, two motorised carts and buffet dinner which will be at the conclusion of the day. Already several holes have been sold via word of mouth so if you want to register an interest please call me direct on (02) 9819 1009 or the mobile on 0425 277 673. Already Malcolm “Miracle” Johnston has signed up as a golfer and I’d suggest he’ll share a few stories with us at dinner also. Miracle was part of our “Boys” golfing trip to China last November and was our handicapper!!! For one that got suspended 50 something times for cheating or being careless (he denies every offence) he was a hoot as the MAN! Single player packages will also be available but we’d like you to organise teams and bring in a few new sponsors to cover the sponsoring of a hole. I’ve always wanted to do this day since I’ve been in the job! More of a fun day with your mates but one where we need to cover the costs and make a slight profit in the till…. We want YOU there!!!! 4 THIS EVENT IS NOT TO BE MISSED – THAT’S AN ORDER! It’s an order because you sometimes just miss out on something spectacular because you are too lazy or didn’t know about it blah, blah!!! Well the Great Australian Songbook (GAS) 1 was like that, so many of you missed an amazing night at the beautiful (first time I’d been there!) Enmore Theatre. Great Australia entertaining talent were on show belting out some great old Aussie songs. These artists sang other Australian artists songs, for example John Paul Young comes out on stage and you know he’s going to sing Love Is In The Air – NO – he belts out the Easybeats Friday’s On My Mind, unbelievable, never head him sing it before. That’s what this show is like and I want the place bloody well filled with Bashers, family and friends on May 26th! Here’s the blurb for GAS 2 and I want you there!!!!! Was there a concert that produced more “feel-good” moments, musical surprises and sheer entertainment than last year’s inaugural Great Australian Songbook event? We don’t think so. And that’s why plans were immediately made to do it all again this year! CHECK OUT THE VIDEO of last year’s performance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pA_brQ_x-6k Variety will again be the beneficiary of what promises to be another wonderful night at the Enmore Theatre on May 26 combining a fresh lineup of 20 of Australia’s finest singers performing some of Australia’s greatest songs. We’re pleased to announce a stellar line-up of artists including Jon Stevens, Shannon Noll, Ian Moss, Hoodoo Guru’s Dave Faulkner, Diesel, James Morrison, Christine Anu, iOTA, Casey Donovan, Monica Trapaga, Dragon lead singer Mark Williams, Ciaran Gribbin (most recent lead singer of INXS), Steve Balbi, country star Tamara Stewart, Jeff Duff (pictured), 11-year-old drumming sensation Jagger Alexander-Erber and Variety Ambassadors John Paul Young and John Williamson – with more to come! Remember, Alexis visited a restaurant in December and grabbed a card off the table, she explains, “In December, whilst eating at the Bavarian Bier café there was a business card in a small stand on the table from DineSmart, (an association for helping the homeless) for their Streetsmart campaign, for one month only. The waitress when taking our order, explained there would be $2.00 added to the bill to help the homeless, but we could opt out if we didn’t want it added. Of course we didn’t say no!” This is an easy opportunity of Bash fundraising for your car with either your local coffee shop, hotel, favourite gourmet dining spot or a chain restaurant in rural areas or otherwise. Variety have the business card flier so, if you would like to provide your restaurant’s information and/or a possible contact, Alexis will be happy to phone them on behalf of Variety. Otherwise, if you would like to have your own conversation, the Variety, Helping Kid’s Be Kids card will be available in a PDF version to print and present this idea. ALL PROCEEDS GO TO YOUR CAR! If your restaurant is interested, Variety would finalise with the manager, the money transfer procedures (which will get allocated to your car), the number of printed cards required and how they will be presented on the table. Below you can see examples of what will be on the tables of YOUR favourite dining experience! Call Alexis to find out more and how to sign up to this fundraising initiative to assist you. Alexis is in the Variety office on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays for any questions and of course any contacts! JOKE OF THE MONTH One day while at her job as a bank loan officer, Patty Black, had a frog hop onto her desk and say, "I would like to apply for a lily-pad improvement loan." Patty looked incredulously at the frog and said, "I'm sorry, we don't loan money to frogs." To which the frog replied, "I have collateral," as he handed her a small ceramic trinket. Not wanting to be impolite, Patty said, "I don't know. I'll have to talk to the bank manager." She walked back to the manager's office and said, "There is a frog out here, asking for a lily-pad improvement loan, and this trinket is all he has for collateral." The bank manager picked up the trinket and looked at it carefully. Then smiling he turned to Patty and said, "Why it's a knick-knack, Patty Black. Give the frog a loan." VARIETY 4WD ADVENTURE TIME Well the Variety Caves to Waves 4WD Adventure has been run and won! With our biggest car count to date we set off after a wonderful tour of Jenolan Caves and finished alongside the Waves on the beach at Forster. The weather took its toll on us and we had to cut short a few of the tracks which would have been too risky in the wet or would have torn up the roads. We still managed to test ourselves on several steep and slippery surfaces along the way and all in all a great time was had by the entrants. We had six Virgin car entrants and it was one of those cars driven by Chris Podesta and James Greathead who captured the two big trophies of Most Enthusiastic Team and Outright winner of the Adventure. The Highest Fundraising trophy went for the second year in-arow to Sharon White and Kerry Parnaby. 2015 ADVENTURE DATES RELEASED Following the completion of the Caves to Waves Adventure, David Blissett and I set off last Sunday week to map out the 2015 version of this boutique event and we are pleased to now let you have the details. This one will be called the Lodge to Lakes Adventure and will commence in Canberra with an evening cruise around Lake Burley Griffin on Saturday 7th March. Apart from Canberra our overnight stops will be Tumbarumba before crossing the border into Victorian High Country where we’ll be staying in Corryong, Bright, Dinner Plain, and Bairnsdale finishing in Lakes Entrance. For more information click HERE to be taken to the 4WD Adventure web page. 8 SERVICE CERTIFICATES If you are coming up to 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 years of Bashing this year, you need to let me know in the office. In fact, Lynlea from Blackwater said she’s not had a call! So boys and girls, get onto the list below and let me know if you are experiencing any difficulties with your accommodation. In most towns – all towns to be exact – community halls or school halls will be made available for you to roll out a swag or sleeping roll. All these places have toilets and showers, but each town still needs you to list this with them as a choice. You can start listing your bedding requirements with these locations.
