SA VARIETY BASH
24 years of
Chairman’s Message
Variety is a charitable
organisation that I have
supported not only as Bash
Chairman but for over 20
years as a Bash entrant and
sponsor. You can give with
utmost confidence, as I do, to Variety knowing your hard
earned dollars will ensure that Variety can continue their
work to help sick, disabled and disadvantaged children
across our state.
In my message last year, I commented that Bash
sponsors are an integral part of Variety underpinning the
event financially. I am extremely pleased to announce
that award winning Tim Adams Wines is the new
platinum sponsor of the Bash for the next three years.
Tim Adams and Pam Goldsack have been huge
supporters of Variety over the past ten years
as event highest fundraisers and gold sponsors and
have chosen to continue to increase their support,
a great recommendation to existing and potential
event sponsors.
Sponsor’s
Message
We also thank and acknowledge our continuing gold
sponsors, Toyota Australia, Hyde Park Press, Vili’s, Peter
Cochrane Transport, Codan and silver sponsors Advance
Robes, Gliderol Garage Doors and for the first time
Odyssey Carpets.
The event would not be the success it is without our
Bash entrants and through their dedication, hard work
fundraising and humble spirit, over the past 23 years
the SA Variety Bash has raised in excess of $26.7
million for children in need in our great State. A big
thank you to our entrants and all your sponsors and
supporters, you should all be immensely proud of your
efforts.
MR.MICK
It is indeed a privilege to
continue into my second
year as Chairman of the
2012 SA Variety Bash.
Platinum
Gold
We are committed to finding interesting and challenging
Bash tracks through our beautiful Aussie country
with much fun and memorable times along the way.
Any support that you, as a sponsor, Bash entrant or
supporter, are able to give will make a difference to the
future of many children and their communities.
The 2012 Bash is an event not to missed!
Doug Lehmann
2012 Bash Chairman
Pam and I are pleased and excited to extend our
support of Variety as Platinum sponsors of the 2012,
2013 and 2014 Bash.
Tim Adams Wines, Mr Mick Cellar Door and Mr Mick’s
Kitchen are all part of our family-owned and operated
company located in the beautiful Clare Valley. Our
long-standing commitment to Variety has
seen many cases of ‘Variety Cleanskin’ wines
sold through cellar door and mail order, raising
funds for kids and their families in need.
Over the years we have been enthusiastic
participants in the 4WD and Bash events,
the Variety Vintage Charity Wine Auction and
welcomed the opportunity to serve on the board.
Perhaps it was the experience of viewing the
2011 Bash from the air, riding ‘shot gun’ in the
support plane that provided a new perspective
of this great fundraising event. Often it is the ‘big
picture’ that inspires us to raise funds, aiming for
seemingly impossibly high targets - $1.47 million in
2011! And yet everyone we meet is equally focused on
the detail fundraising achieves; providing children with
medical care, specialist education and financial support.
We believe our involvement with Variety has impacted
extremely positively on our business and we would
highly recommend Variety to companies who are
considering sponsorship of, or alignment with, a charity.
Pam and I are delighted to continue our commitment to
Variety, we thank every participant for coming on board
in 2012, wish you well in your fundraising efforts and
look forward to catching up at one of the many events
through the year. Cheers,
Tim Adams and Pam Goldsack

REGULAR GIVING PROGRAM
A great fundraising initiative
Bash cars travelled 2,633 km through many iconic places
including, Blinman, Innamincka, Arkaroola, Leigh Creek,
Wilpena, Peterborough and the iconic German town
Hahndorf.
What will you give?
It all started in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1927 when a
group of 11 young men, working in a theatre, formed a
social club they called ... Variety.
The 24th SA Variety Bash to be held over nine days in
2012 is set to be another great event! It will depart from
Peter Lehmann winery in the Barossa on Friday 10 August,
travel to Birdsville and finish nine days later on Saturday 18
August in Mildura.
On Christmas Eve in 1928, at a party in the Sheridan
Theatre, Pittsburgh, an infant girl was found in the stalls of
the theatre. Proving that the heart of show business was,
in fact, a big one, members of the first Variety Club decided
to foster the baby. She was officially named Catherine
Variety Sheridan. Catherine her given name, Variety after
the club and Sheridan after the theatre in which she
was found. Variety “Tents” are now spread around 14
countries, with membership drawn from the many faceted
world of entertainment, the leisure industries, media and
sporting world, major corporations plus many other people
whose hearts are big enough to want to serve children.
Thousands of children have benefited from funds raised
through our events.
THE VARIETY BASH
Bashing was created in 1985 by adventurer Dick Smith,
when he took a group of friends for a drive he called “The
Bourke to Burketown Bash”.
The Bash is generally an eight day drive in the country
with your mates. It is NOT a race or rally, it is a madcap
event designed to put the fun into fundraising. Vehicles
must be in standard condition and shall be models
constructed prior to December 1980 with run on models
to 1987 but excluding fuel injected vehicles (refer to the
Events Manager and Bash Chairman). The drivers and
crews, however, are anything but standard issue with most
Bashers taking the one major rule (don’t take it seriously)
seriously.
The Bash is the entrants’ reward for a year spent
fundraising for the children of SA who really need it.
Bashing today has not changed from its original concept. It
began in SA in 1989 and has seen Bashers travel through
much of our beautiful country during this time.
August 2011 marked the 23rd anniversary of the South
Australian Variety Bash that saw an entourage of over
100 vehicles, comprising entrants, support, official and
medical vehicles, along with mobile workshops, two semis,
a Cessna and satellite dish. The event departed from Hyde
Park and crossed the finish line in Hahndorf culminated
Whilst there are various trophies awarded to encourage
fundraising, fun themes, fun for the kids and overall fun…
the ultimate winners of the Bash are the children in need.
THE IMPORTANCE OF
SPONSORSHIP
Next to the children, for whom we all work, the sponsors
are our most important group. Whether it is as a vehicle
in the SA Variety Bash or support for other events and
special projects, it is the sponsors to whom Variety looks
for assistance. It is the sponsors, therefore, who are really
helping the children. Without the backing of sponsors there
would not be a Bash!
Apart from monetary donations, the provision of goods (in
the form of show bags, stickers, badges and the like for
the Bashers to hand out to children along the route) is an
effective way to spread your name across the state.
Over the past 23 years the SA Variety Bash has raised
in excess of $26.7 million net. This has been achieved
by 23 years of hard work… and 23 years of generous
sponsorship by thousands of individuals and the corporate
sector.
There are thousands of children in South Australia who
would benefit from your involvement as a sponsor of a
vehicle in the Variety Bash.
Many major companies including Tim Adam Wines,
Kennards, Toyota Australia, Gliderol Garage Doors, Vilis
Cakes, Jarvis Toyota, Canon, Haigh’s, Adelaide Brighton
Cement, the Stamford Group and the Adelaide Convention
Centre have chosen Variety as their ‘preferred charity’ over
the years and proudly publicise this.
Not only is the company seen as a good corporate citizen,
but by investing in Variety, you are investing in over 75
charities and organisations around the state. It enables the
receptionist or personal assistant to advise those ringing
for a donation that Variety is it’s preferred charity with a
simple explanation ‘please phone Variety, if your appeal fits
the guidelines Variety may fund your request’.
Our ‘Regular Giving’ campaign and the message in it is
simple. We’re communicating to the public that for as little
as $2 per week, they can make a real difference to the life
of a child in SA.
By signing up to Variety’s Regular Giving Program,
donations received from organisations and individuals can
be attributed to a chosen Bash car, not only helping the
car’s fundraising tally but helping kids in need in SA!
From a Variety perspective, for just $8 per month over a
year, a regular gift will become another by sending a child
in need to the Annual Variety Children’s Christmas Party at
the Adelaide Showground.
For those of you who have been to one of these, you’ll
understand what an inspiring experience it is.
Regular Giving Brochures are available from the office.
WHAT IS TAX DEDUCTIBLE?
Monies donated to Variety, the children’s charity are
generally tax deductible under the
Income Tax Assessment Act provided they qualify as an
unfettered donation; that is, the donor can prove that they
have received no value in return for the donation.
WHAT IS NOT?
Sponsors and entrants should accordingly be aware that
the following ARE NOT deductible as donations. These
costs are met personally by the entrants.
1. The $550 entry fee.
2. Meal costs.
3. Accommodation costs.
4. Vehicle purchase, preparation, maintenance and running
costs.
5. Merchandise purchases.
6. Associated travel costs, for example, return airfares
and accommodation, vehicle return transport or vehicle
recovery costs.
7. Ticket sales, including raffle tickets.
8. Auction items.
These comments are to be taken as guidelines only. Variety
is not a tax consultant and therefore assumes no liability
for actions taken as a result of these guidelines. In any
instances where an entrant or a sponsor is uncertain of the
tax implications of their involvement, they should consult
their own accountant or tax adviser.
How the money has been spent
In the 2010/11 financial year, a total of 174 appeals were
approved totaling $3.822 million for the direct benefit of
South Australian children.
Total number of Sunshine Coaches donated in SA since
inception is 162.
The Liberty Swing is a world-first Australian innovation
– a swing that allows wheelchair-bound children the
opportunity to experience the joy of having a swing in the
park. To date, 14 ‘Liberty Swings’ have been approved.
VIRGIN MESSAGE
From spending endless hours preparing the car, to
sourcing sponsors and fundraising, as virgin Bashers we
wondered what we had got ourselves into!
We arrived at the start line on King William Road standing
there feeling a little nervous and wondered if we were
going to be able to do this! Once we saw the support that
was being shown towards all the Bashers we knew we
could and we were glad to have spent the year fundraising
to qualify for the event. It didn’t take long to truly fit in.
The team at Variety that organise our stops along the way
as well as all our meals are truly remarkable. Who else
would organise a seafood buffet in the middle of nowhere
under a marquee!!
The Bash truly is for a good cause and to see first hand
donations made to rural schools and children along the
tracks was a good feeling. We were extremely fortunate
to have support from private property owners allowing
us access on their tracks and amazing scenery that few
people have the privilege of seeing.
For us the Bash was like nothing we have ever
experienced and an adventure worth doing again and
again! At first we couldn’t believe there were Bashers that
had never missed a Bash in over 20 years!
How do you explain being part of the Variety Family, and
that’s exactly what you are when you become involved
with Bash! Everyone is part of this charity for the same
reason, to raise money for the children of SA and have
some fun along the way! It’s not often you can go out for a
week long drive with your crew and 300 + strangers who
before you know it turns in to 300+ mates.
Thanks to all our sponsors and supporters who made this
possible for us.

TELLING EVERYONE ABOUT THE BASH
We put a lot of energy into promotion of the event
through regular communication with media outlets
right across the city and state. Since 2008 we have
partnered with the Advertiser which resulted in
high profile exposure of the Bash through Adelaide
Confidential and the Adelaide Now website.
Each day of the Bash, our on-the-road reporters talk
to their media mates in Adelaide and in regional areas.
Network Ten weather reporter Jane Reilly and her
crew transmit their daily forecasts direct to Adelaide
from the Bash. To keep up with what’s happening on
the event switch on to Network Ten each night for the
weather forecast. Jane is now an experienced Basher
who completed her twelfth Bash in 2011.
All the fun of our great event is captured on DVD,
not only as memorabilia for every entrant, but as a
one hour television special that will be screened on
Channel 7, either late in 2011 or early in the New Year.
