Hello everyone and welcome to the March edition of the Bash Bulletin for 2016! How quickly things
are coming and going? We’ve had our first M.E.I.N., for the year and now it’s time for another one,
this Wednesday night!
It was nice to have our new Chief Barker, Amanda Mead, with us in Gladesville last month to give us
an update on what is happening Locally, Nationally and Internationally in Variety. We wish her well
with that massive role and welcome her back at anytime she wishes to join us.
BARBARA BARRY OAM
Unfortunately we didn’t get the news in time for our February Bash
Bulletin that one of our great, past Bashers, Barbara Barry (pictured),
was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia on Australia Day for
her, “service to children through charitable organisations.”
I first met Barb (who I liked to call, “The Barbie Doll”) on the 1996 Bash
to Darwin and she did that with her hubby and past Chief Barker, Kevin
Barry. I think they went on to do three or four more Bashers together
and we all had a great time together, especially if Barb could find a
piano, she is a fantastic pianist and singer. I’ll never forget one night in
the Kynuna Community Hall (I don’t think anyone had been in the hall for forty years it was so old
and dirty!) when about 20 of us were going to sleep on the floor – but not until Barb had banged out
a tune on an old, delaminating, keys missing upright piano….and she did!!!!! Great stuff.
Albeit she retired from Bashing – she came into Bashing as an avid member of the Ladies of Variety
and is still a member of this wonderful group of women who do so much for the kids behind the
scenes. Barb was also the long time organiser of the transport for the annual LoV’s Kid’s Christmas
Party during those days it was held at Darling Harbour Convention Centre. She and Kevin now live a
relaxed life at Shoal Bay on the beautiful Port Stephens waterway and we congratulate and thank
them both for their years of Variety involvement.

MORE GOOD NEWS
WOOF Kevin Leahy OAM and his partner, Sharon Head (pictured),
were guests of the Chief of the Royal Australian Air Force, Leo
Davies, on the 10th March in Canberra to receive the Federation Star
medal. The medal goes to Australian Defence personnel who have
served their country for forty years or more and we say
congratulations to Kevvie for this amazing attainment. Kevin has been
a long time Basher in both the B to B Bash and our NSW Bash.
His RAAF, mechanical engineering duties have taken him all over the
world and he’s also done ‘tours of duty’ in Iraq and Afghanistan but it’s
with the Bash he excels! He’s had the RAAF support both our Bashes
with Mobile Workshops, Baggage Trucks and Paramedics and he too
“works” as an Official on both events. And as I write this note, Kevin is
away doing the final survey for the NSW Bash, which starts in May, with Bill McGuigan who are
subbing for Victor Sheil who is still recovering from a broken collarbone suffered on a Postie Bike
Dash survey mishap!
Well done Kevin, and again, congratulations on this milestone achievement.
STILL MORE GOOD NEWS
This is just something out of the blue! Last month, some of our 4WD Adventurers met on a Friday
night at the Blacktown Drive-In for a social night together. But, earlier in the day I attended a funeral
at Botany, then a ‘wake” at Taren Point before heading up the motorway in BASH1 to Blacktown for
the movie.
Just as I arrived at the Drive-In I noticed a $50 note under the windscreen wiper! Somewhere along
that journey from the funeral, someone has made an anonymous donation to Variety which I just
think is amazing! But it does prove we are getting the word out there!
BASH OFFICIAL ON THE MEND
Well who would have ever thought?!?!?!
Victor Sheil, our Regional Manager based in Newcastle - and Bash
Official - took a dive off his Postie Bike during the first survey for this
year’s Dash! It apparently was on the last day and it was at almost a
‘walking pace’ when he came a cropper!!!!
It was off to hospital, eventually, where the shoulder blade was pretty
smashed up and Victor said it was so bad they couldn’t simply pin it
back and they used plates, screws and Blu Tack!!!
He’s back at work now on light duties and looking forward to all our
motoring events – on four wheels – ahead!!!

THE MOTORING EVENTS INFORMATION NIGHT (AKA M.E.I.N.)
Our next M.E.I.N., is this Wednesday night, March 16th, at the Gladesville RSL @ 4 Linsley Street,
Gladesville starting from 6pm. These nights are held on the THIRD Wednesday of the month – in
most cases. There are a few changes to that depending on certain circumstances.
For Virgins it is a great opportunity to talk to Bashers and mechanics about building or maintaining a
Bash car so make the effort to come along on these nights. We welcome Bashers, 4WD
Adventurers, friends and interested newcomers from 6pm.
And as customary, there will be a raffle on the night – and – as usual – we are scratching for
prizes! So if you have any leftover promotional items, un-opened Christmas/Easter/Valentine’s
Day/Birthday presents or anything, please bring them along to help boost the prize pool. Thank you
in advance for your assistance here. Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday night.
PENRITH FESTIVAL PARADE
Short notice I know, but this Saturday is the Penrith Festival Parade and we have been invited to
enter some cars in it.
A lady, Gai Hawthorn, CEO of the Penrith CBD Corporation, sent me this note;
Hi
I picked up the brochure on the Variety Bash at Luddenham show recently and we are keen to
promote the Bash cars during the street parade at our Penrith Festival. Large event with over 20,000
attending each year. The street parade form is attached and we have space for static displays too.
Please let me know if interested in attending, the event is 19th March and the parade is 12.30pm
Contact Gai on these numbers, P 4722 5556, M 0437 506 517 or E gai@penrithcbdcorp.com.au and
she’ll send you the forms
DOOR PANELS – SIGN UP NOW – REMINDER!
We are looking at getting our Bash Door Panels printed soon along with our other decals for your
Bash cars. As in the past, Rod “Brush” Baker, our signwriter will print your car numbers on the door
panels if you have completed and paid your $500, non-refundable, deposit. The cut off point for
these is next Monday, the 21st March. So get that paperwork in guys and girls or you’ll be paying
extra to buy your own numbers.
COLOUR DAY
As promised, we announced our Colour Day at the February M.E.I.N., and it is TARTAN this year!
That’s to go with our Scottish Theme Day on the Bash which is Day 2. from Armidale. This is how
come! In 1839, George J. Macdonald, acting as the commissioner of crown lands in NSW, described
the site he was standing in, now occupied by Macdonald Park in East Armidale, as 'an extensive,
open plain, well-watered and sheltered and centrally situated.' Macdonald named the area after his
clan's baronial estate of 'Armadale' in Scotland. And hence, why we will be having Scottish (Tartan)
Day whilst there, starting at the school for breakfast!
4
GOODIE BAGS
Sally Ross is really looking for products to include in our Bash ‘Goodie Bags’ if you have any
contacts for products that might be useful, fun, yummy or interesting to include please let Sally know.
Great promotion for their products. We generally request 400 (for one per person) or 150 (for one per
car). Call Sally on 9819 1016 or email her on sally.ross@varietynsw.org.au
HOME HOSTING
OK, we now have arrangements made with three schools for Home Hosting at Lightning Ridge,
Charleville and Hughenden. Here are the contacts;



Lightning Ridge: Lightning Ridge Central School. Amber Adams P 02 6829 0511
Charleville: St Marys School. Deidre Murray P 07 4654 1638
Hughenden: Hughenden State School. Vicky Horton P 07 4741 2111
Now the above three ladies are all Administration workers at the schools, so they are not only taking
your calls but they are also running the schools! So be patient and courteous.
They will want to know; 1. Your car number, 2. Your name, 3. Your contact number, 4. Beds required
(e.g., three guys, three beds), 5. Your email address. All these are important items, don’t do any
short cuts.
Now, most importantly, these people are here to help you – they don’t have to do it – so be nice. At
this stage they haven’t got any beds lined up at all so don’t make any demands. Anyone that steps
out of line in this process will be cut loose and you can find your own beds. They are doing you a
favour remember!!!!!
INTENTION TO DONATE TO VARIETY
Sometimes we are asked for an Intention to Donate to Variety Invoice which is we – on behalf of
you – send to a company you may be dealing with a form for the agreed sum of money they have
promised you with payment details. We are unable to produce a ‘Tax Invoice’ for a donation, but this
form is the acceptable alternative for most companies. It’s simple for us to do and all we require is
their details – such as contact name, company name, address and the amount.
Call Sally Ross on 9819 1016 for further advice.

The South Coast and Shoalhaven Bashers are putting on one of their fantastic fundraisers in April.
It’s Polka Dot Night and everyone is welcome.
When: Saturday 30th April
Where: Bomaderry Bowling Club
Time: 6.30pm for a 7pm start
Tickets: $75 each
Includes: Dinner, auctions, raffles and entertainment
Contact for more details: Brian “Dollars” Muller M: 0413 404461
Be part of this great night and don’t forget to….Come in your best polka dots!!
The Mermaids have two wonderful events coming up and I really do urge you to support these
events.
The First: Thursday 2nd June. Each year Beryl Driver and her Mermaids organise a day on
Currawong which is the former Labor NSW holiday camp. I went for the first time last year and had a
great day – yes it’s a day out! You’ll be transported by ferry from Palm Beach across Pittwater to
Currawong and you swim back! Well that is, depending on how many raffle tickets you buy!!!!!!
You’ll have a great lunch, walk around this historic site, take the clubs for a game of golf with the
Peninsular Ladies or even a book to read, it’s just relaxing day in one of natures’ best kept secret
locations! In fact some of those Peninsula Ladies think everyone should be blind folded so they can’t
come back!!!!! Ha, ha……
The Second: Tuesday night 2nd August. This is Beryl’s signature event, her night out at the Palm
Beach RSL. This is a good night out which Beryl has been trying to stop having for several years –
BUT – the locals won’t let her stop them!!!!
You’ll have dinner and drinks at club prices with a raffle and a few auctions as well. I enjoy the
relaxed atmosphere of this night and watching the Main Mermaid in action as she “swims” around the
room making everyone feel welcomed like she does.
I don’t have all the details but I urge you to contact Beryl and make a booking for both or either of
these fundraisers. Beryl is our oldest entrant and never stops thinking about the kids we support. I
know it’s a bloody long way away but it’s for Beryl…….how could you not support her for once?!?!?!
Get Beryl on 0410 478 897 and tell her Stuart told you to ring!!!!!
SHUTE HARBOUR CAR PARKING
For those travelling over to Hamilton Island, we have been successful in receiving wonderful help
from the Whitsunday Regional council regarding parking. Council has approved for us to park at
Shute Harbour and they will provide 24 hour security for the two days we are on the Island. That’s
fantastic news – and – we much appreciate their assistance.
Other options. Joe Cautela is organising with a Valet Parking service guy, a Queensland Basher we
met on the first survey, other ways to park and ride. We are still organising the finer details and
prices so keep an eye on this section. But here are some of the things we are looking at;
6

Firstly, your provisions fee will include your charter cruise ship travel from Shute Harbour to
Hamilton Island and back to Shute Harbour on Wednesday 31st.

If you don’t travel back on the charter cruise you will have to pay your own way back from
Hamilton Island, there is no discount on the regular cruise price.

Joe is organising undercover car parking separate to Shute Harbour. This is with the Valet
service. You will need to drop off your crew and baggage at the Shute Harbour terminal and,
just the driver, take the car to the parking area – mid way between Shute Harbour and Airlie
Beach. You will be taken back to the Shute Harbour terminal by bus.

This last method allows you to stay longer on Hamilton Island but if you don’t return on the
31st, where you’ll be picked up at Shute Harbour by the Valet service, you will have to return
to the Airlie Beach terminal at your own expense. Joe is seeking expressions of interest on
this Valet parking option to work in with the Queensland operator. Get Joe on 0412 448 007.

Should you wish your car transported back to Sydney and fly direct out of Hamilton Island, Joe
is organising that car transport component as well. You will need to take up the above option
and leave your car in the lock up. From here your car will be picked up by the trucks for return
to Sydney. Again get Joe on 0412 448 007.

Remember, if you don’t travel on the charter cruise components of this section of the Bash
your travel to and from Hamilton Island are at your expense.
Watch this space for further refinements and pricing. Remember, the Bash Office does not organise
the car transportation, Joe does this as a favour to you guys – so – remember that when he’s asking
for details and or payments. He’s doing you a favour, you certainly aren’t doing him any favours!!!!
HAMILTON ISLAND ACCOMMODATION
And don’t forget to book your accommodation on Hamilton Island as there is no camping or caravan
parks there. Here is your contact for accommodation on Hamilton Island;

JOKE OF THE MONTH – IRISH LUBRICANT
Murphy's' old lady had been pregnant for some time and now the time had come. He brought
her to the doctor and the doctor began to deliver the baby. She had a little boy and the doctor
looked over at Murphy and said.
'Hey, Murph! You just had you a son!
'Ain't dat grand!!'
Murphy got excited by this, but just then the doctor spoke up and said,
'Hold on! We ain't finished yet!'
The doctor then delivered a little girl.
He said,
'Hey, Murph! You got you a daughter!!!! She is a pretty lil ting, too....'
Murphy got kind of puzzled by this and then the doctor said,
'Hold on, we ain’t got done yet!'
The doctor then delivered another boy and said,
'Murph, you just had yourself another boy!'
Murphy said to the doctor,
'Doc, what caused all of dem babies?'
The doctor said,
'You never know, Murph, it was probably something that happened during conception.'
Murphy said,
'Ah yeah, during conception.'
When Murph and his wife went home with their three children, he sat down with his wife and
said,
'Mama, you remember dat night that we ran out of Vaseline and we had to use dat dere 3-in-1
Oil.'
She said, 'Yeah, I remember dat night...'
Murph said, 'I'll tell you, .....it's a freaking' good ting we didn't use WD-40.’
LOGOS AND WORDING ON PRINTED ARTICLES
8
Now that we are back in the fundraising season we thought we should re visit what you can and can’t
say in your flyers/invitations and raffle tickets etc., as the fundraising season is also about to start for
you! With Virgin Bashers signing on we need to let them know and remind you about the rules of
using the Variety logos etc. You can use the Bash logo (as seen on the front page of the Bulletin)
with your fundraising literature but you CANNOT use Variety’s logo with the Heart and Hat on its
own. There are two versions of a combined Variety/Event Logo which we have developed for you
(pictured) but you can’t split it. If you can’t get it right, we won’t be putting it up on our web site.
These logos, plus the event logo on its own, are available from the Bash Office and should be used
in all fundraising promotions and on all printing and advertising material (raffle tickets included). It is
imperative that your car number is the main feature of the title. Then, and only then, should you
mention that Variety is the beneficiary of your particular fundraising activity. Here are some examples
you can use;
CAR NO. 999
Raising funds for the Variety B to B Bash 2016
CAR NO. 999
Raising funds for Variety’s “children with special needs” through the Variety B to B Bash 2016
CAR NO. 999
… an entrant in the Variety B to B Bash 2016
CAR NO. 999
… an entrant in the Variety B to B 2016 Berowra to Bowen Bash
If in any doubt about this please do not hesitate to contact me at the office as it’s extremely important
we play to the rules of the land regarding charities. And please don’t change its shape either! We ask
Car Captains or Team Leaders to double check their helpers that they are getting it right. Thank you.
Send Sally an email and she’ll forward the logos to you, sally.ross@variety.org.au
SERVICE CERTIFICATES
If you are coming up to 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years of Bashing this year, you need to let us know in
the office. It is up to you to inform us and if you don’t – and – on the night you don’t get your
certificate, then don’t blame us!!!!! Is your name missing and have we received your entry form yet?
Below is a list of Bashers who have nominated so far, if your name is not on this list, it’s time to get
your Entry Form in! Here are the links;
