HELLO AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL FROM THE BASH BUNKER
I’d rather not be starting the year off on a sad note but I’m afraid already in the New Year we have
lost two wonderful Variety supporters.
Firstly, during our first week back at work, the horrific truck M2 accident on Tuesday the 7th involved
the death of one of Variety’s wonderful volunteers, Paul Kerr. Paul, a non Basher, was a regular face
at Variety functions over the last few years being a regular Batman at fundraising activities. At our
last Ladies of Variety Children’s Christmas party he debuted as the Penguin - from Batman.
He mostly dressed up as Batman for Variety and has been an avid supporter of Variety for seven
years. He was the founder of Sydney's Gotham's finest and also did voluntary work for Make a Wish
and Starlight as well as being a regular visitor to Westmead Children's and Royal Randwick
Hospitals being a regular Batman for them. Here’s a recent photo of
Paul as his family and friends knew him plus at a Variety function as we
knew him, Batman!
Secondly, the day after Paul Kerr’s untimely
passing, Petro Purtell
passed away after a long
illness. Petro was a
Basher and started her
Bashing career with
David Blissett in the #812
Valiant on our 25th
Anniversary Bash in 2009
to Broken Hill.
Petro enjoyed three Bashes before her illness initiated, which, eventually
stopped her from Bashing and ultimately took her life. Petro, with her South
African upbringing, brought a different slant to our Bashing and was popular
with all the Bashers. She’ll be sorely missed. To the family and friends of both
Paul and Petro we offer our most sincere condolences on your loss. Rest in
Peace Paul and Petro.

NOT ALL NEWS IS BAD HOWEVER
It was great to read in the papers on
Australia Day our Bash Matriarch, Beryl
Driver, was recognised in the Australia
Day Honours list with the Medal of the
Order of Australia in the general division
(OAM).
Beryl received hers for, “service to the
community through charitable initiatives.”
The text that followed the announcement
included, “Beryl has completed 15
Variety Club (No, no, no it’s not a “club”
anymore!!) Bashes, raising funds for the charity where she has been inducted into the Variety
Bash Hall of Fame. She assists the Indigenous children of Brewarrina with donations of clothing,
books and toys, and helps organise an annual bus trip for the children to the seaside at South
Narrabeen Surf Club. She is a past recipient of the Pittwater Council’s Senior Citizen of the Year
Award, 2013. Beryl is pictured here celebrating with fellow Bashers, Lavern and Shirley plus
Sallymae Bailey to the right.
Well done Beryl and congratulations from your Variety Bash Family, we are so proud of you! XO
THEN THIS NICE NOTE
We received a lovely email from Basher Donna Tobias which we thought we should share and also
offer our thanks to Ian Packer for his generous Bash Auction donation.
Stuart and Sally,
Toby and I enjoyed our purchase at final night auction earlier this month and have written a review
and hope it can go in the next bulletin to help encourage sales at the auctions and business at CamWay Estate.
Results of a Buy at the 2014 final night Auction…. Because I had brought him the Bathurst 1000 start
grid walk, Toby brought me the Hunter Valley short break holiday package at the final night dinner
auction in Bowral. We visit the Hunter regularly and were happy with the place we usually stay so I
thought the voucher was probably a waste of money (other than for the fact it was for charity that is!).
Well wasn’t I in for a surprise!!!!
Our regular place is no longer our regular. Cam-Way Estate will now be our home away from home.
From the start we were difficult customers – can we change the dates, can we add another couple in
an adjoining room, can we add another night?…all this before we even got there. Ian (the owner and
basher, car 178) and his team handled all this with great forbearance and professionalism.
On arrival, check-in was swift allowing us to get to our rooms quickly. In the room, the air
conditioning was already on, there was a fruit bowl on the table, flowers on the bench and a
breakfast basket with enough food for a couple of breakfasts.
The rooms were immaculate; with the attention to detail fantastic (I think someone must have a touch
of OCD…lol). Everything you need to have a comfortable stay is provided. As we were staying for 4
nights and didn’t want to eat out every night, the kitchen was great, all the utensils available allowing
3
us to cook a couple of lovely roast dinners. The ability to walk to restaurants and wineries was great
as well, as my birthday dinner was only a walk away – no need for a designated driver….not that
there is anyway because Ian offers a service to drive you to and from restaurants in the area.
Ian also runs private winery tours in his 4WD and a 5 hour tour was included in our voucher; it was
fantastic. Ian’s local knowledge is comprehensive and he regaled us with stories of the history of the
area and wineries, as well as tips to other local sightseeing opportunities. The tour was very flexible
and Ian adjusted it to suit our individual tastes in food and wine.
Breakfast on the veranda watching the kangaroos and birds around the dam was magic, as was the
cooling dip in the swimming pool – didn’t try the tennis court, I’ll leave that to someone more
energetic!
Toby and I highly recommend Cam-Way Estate for any length stay and any size group. We may
even see you there because we will definitely be going back…soon!!!! (For your convenience
reservations: 02 4998 7655 or see camwayestate.com.au)
Thank you Ian and Variety for having this auction item available…we will be enjoying it for years to
come.
Regards
Donna & Toby Tobias
Cars 632 and 816
PS…Toby says he really enjoyed the Bathurst grid walk as well but as he took the eldest son instead
of me I can’t comment on that...lol.
Nice note Donna, thank you for the follow up – and – again thank you Ian for the prize, it certainly
sounds a wonderful place to visit and I trust you get plenty of Bash callers wanting to fill your cabins!
LATE BREAKING NEWS
David Blissett from car #812, and wife Wendy, were awarded the
Marulan’s Community Citizens of the Year Award for their community
work around the township of Marulan (near Goulburn) and their
fundraising activities for Variety – the Children’s Charity! Congratulations
David and Wendy, well done guys, you are great workers plus Wendy
makes the best Melting Moments!!!!!!

THE MOTORING EVENTS INFORMATION NIGHT (AKA M.E.I.N.)
Our first M.E.I.N., of the year will be Wednesday night, February 18th, at the Gladesville RSL @ 4
Linsley Street, Gladesville starting from 6pm. These nights are held on the THIRD Wednesday of the
month – in most cases. There are a few changes to that depending on certain circumstances. Please
look at the Motoring Events Calendar in this Bash Bulletin and transfer all our event dates into your
diary so you are aware of the events and dates?
Now to help out a little, here are the M.I.E.N., dates;
18th February
18th March
15th April
13th May – not the third week due to the NSW Bash the following week
17th June
15th July
Nil August – B to B Bash time
Nil September
Nil October – but the Bash Reunion is the 17th at Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL
18th November
9th December – early because of Christmas
For Virgins it is a great opportunity to talk to Bashers and mechanics about building or maintaining a
Bash car so make the effort to come along on these nights. We welcome Bashers, 4WD
Adventurers, friends and interested newcomers from 6pm.
And as customary, there will be a raffle on the night – and – as usual – we are scratching for prizes!
So if you have any leftover promotional items, un opened Christmas presents or anything, please
bring them along to help boost the prize pool. Thank you in advance for your assistance here. So
look forward to seeing you on Wednesday night.
A NIGHT NOT TO BE MISSED – VARIETY SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION EVENING
Last year we held our first public Scholarship Presentation Evening and it was so emotional as these
wonderful Grant recipients received their awards. It was the first night we met Connor Wink, the
young 15 year old, blind singer who performed for us at the National Bash Dinner.
The big disappointment was there wasn’t enough Bashers there to support the night and the kids.
Well this year it’s on again and I want the place packed with cheering Bashers along with your
families and friends. These kids don’t only (and muchly) need our money, they need to hear our
applause – so please put this date in your diary NOW!!!
2015: Scholarship Presentation Evening.
Date: Friday 20th March 2015
Location: The Concourse Theatre, Chatswood (magnificent venue)
I’ll keep you all updated with more information as we have it – but it would be fabulous if you’re able
to attend on the night.
A NIGHT AT THE DRIVE IN
A few of our 4WD Adventurers are meeting tomorrow night at the Blacktown Drive-In to see the
highly rated move, American Sniper. This is not restricted to just the 4WDrivers and we get there a
5
fair bit earlier than the 8.30pm movie start to share friendship, a few ales and some nibblies – all of
which is BYO.
We “corral” the cars and bring our own chairs for this soiree before jumping back in the cars to watch
the movie. Gates open at 5.30pm and we get there about 6pm to save some spaces down by the
Diner. We did it last year and it was good fun – and memories?!?!?!!? Give me a ring on 0425 277
673 so I can keep a possie for you in our “block!”
A BUSY MONTH COMING UP
I’ll be pretty much out of the office the entire month of February. Next week I start by being in
Melbourne from Tuesday night 3rd returning Friday night 6th. Saturday the 7th I’m away in WA for a
week on holidays where I’ll join up with one of my sons for a week of sprintcar watching, returning
Sunday 15th. Monday the 16th Ken Dollery and I head off from Bass Hill to do our second survey of
the Variety Dick Smith Bass Hill to Bunbury Bash! That should have us back in Sydney around
the 2nd March.
That gives me almost a week to get ready for the Variety Lodge to Lakes 4WD Adventure! That will
see me away until Monday 16th March and then we have a little time to “smell the roses” – actually
mow the lawns at home!!!!!
Sally Ross, your Motoring Events Coordinator will be here during that time to assist with any of your
questions. She is very much available to accept your paperwork which you can now do ONLINE!!!!
Put this web address into your browser; http://www.variety.org.au/NSW/Events/Bash/BashParticipation/ to see more.
BASH CAR TRANSPORT HOME FROM WA
Can you please contact Joe Cautela and indicate to him if you require his services to get your
car back from Western Australia following the Bash in August?!?!?!?! There are two ways of
getting your car back from WA, One is drive it back or the other is to organise it to be transported
back for you. If you were to enter both Bashes and you drove home from Broome - and didn’t stop for
any of Jack Cannons’ road-side parties - you should be home in Sydney on the following Sunday,
August 23rd. The transport option is to get in contact with Joe Cautela who has done all the hard
yards for you regarding finding out how much it will cost you from both Perth and Broome. Joe’s
prices include full costs of transport including insurances for cars coming back from either location.
From Perth to Sydney including all insurances is $825.00 including GST. From Broome to Perth to
Sydney including all insurances is $1,520.00 including GST (this price is up by only $135.00 from
four years ago, so they are really looking after us).
These prices are based on an August 2015 departure. Prices may vary, but due to our cause they
will be held without any increases until April 2015. So Ring Joe direct as he needs to know who is
doing what by March 2015 as he needs to pay for spots on the rail line back to Sydney.
Call Joe on 0412 448 007 or email him on joe@mbw.com.au
JOKE OF THE MONTH
A passenger in a taxi leaned over to ask the driver a question and tapped him on the shoulder. The
driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb, and stopped just
inches from a large plate glass window.
6
For a few moments everything was silent in the cab, and then the still shaking driver said, "I'm sorry
but you scared the daylights out of me."
The frightened passenger apologised to the driver and said he didn't realise a mere tap on the
shoulder could frighten him so much.
The driver replied, "No, no, I'm sorry, it's entirely my fault. Today is my first day driving a cab. I've
been driving a hearse for the last 25 years."
DOOR PANEL NUMBERS AND ASSOCIATED DECALS
Good time to remind you what compulsory decals are required and positions they must be put in.
DOOR PANELS: You receive two (2) door panels which are to go on
the front driver’s and front passenger’s doors. The door panels MUST
NOT be cut and put side x side. They can only be cut to go top and
bottom of a protective strip on the door. You will also receive two (2)
Dick Smith and two (2) Brydens decals (the event sponsors) for
each side of the car which are compulsory. Additionally there are two
(2) each of the Variety and Bash event logo decals which we’d like
you to put on either side also in a suitable position.
WINDSCREEN STRIP: You receive one (1) windscreen strip for the
front windscreen and it should be placed as shown. Your car number
has to be placed in the top right hand corner just under the
windscreen strip. These numbers are to be white and are a minimum
of 10cm or 4 inches in height.
REAR SCREEN: You receive a rear number “plate” which is to go in
the top right hand corner as shown. This number plate cannot be cut
up and placed elsewhere on the car. It can have the corners shaped
to fit the screen. The VARIETY BASH…YA GOTTA DO IT decal has
to go on the back screen also – top or bottom of the screen it doesn’t
matter. The UHF 20 decal should go on the screen also at the bottom
right of the screen. PLEASE make sure your revolving orange lights are not blocked by any items or
racking and can be clearly seen from the BACK!
OPTIONAL: MY OTHER CAR (bumper) and follow the Bash at decals are
optional but we’d like to see them on the car please.
For Virgin Teams we will supply the initial Rear Window “number plate”
F.O.C. For those that got them last year, if you need to replace it, that will
cost you $25.
LOGOS AND WORDING ON PRINTED ARTICLES
We thought we should re visit what you can and can’t say in your flyers/invitations and raffle tickets
etc., as the fundraising season is also about to start for you! With Virgin Bashers signing on we need
to let them know and remind you about the rules of using the Variety logos etc. You can use the
7
Bash logo (as seen on the front page of the Bulletin) with your fundraising literature but you
CANNOT use Variety’s logo with the Heart and Hat on its own. There are two versions of a combined
Variety/Event Logo which we have developed for you (pictured) but you can’t split it. If you can’t get it
right, we won’t be putting it up on our web site.
The available logos are available from the Bash Office and should be used in all fundraising
promotions and on all printing and advertising material (raffle tickets included). It is imperative that
your car number is the main feature of the title. Then, and only then, should you mention that Variety
is the beneficiary of your particular fundraising activity. Here are some examples you can use;
CAR NO. 999
Raising funds for the Variety B to B Bash 2015
CAR NO. 999
Raising funds for Variety’s “special needs children” through the Variety B to B Bash 2015
CAR NO. 999
… an entrant in the Variety B to B Bash 2015
CAR NO. 999
… an entrant in the Variety B to B 2015 Bass Hill to Bunbury Bash
If in any doubt about this please do not hesitate to contact me at the office as it’s extremely important
we play to the rules of the land regarding charities. And please don’t change its shape either!
We ask Car Captains or Team Leaders to double check their helpers that they are getting it right.
Thank you. Send Sally an email and she’ll forward the logos to you, sally.ross@variety.org.au
EVERYDAY HERO FUNDRAISING PAGE
On entering the event we advise you to set up an online fundraising page for your car with Everyday
Hero. Sally will send the team captain an email with five easy steps to set this up. It’s a great and
easy way to fundraise!
You can then personalise your fundraising page with images and information about your car and
team. You can then send the URL of your fundraising page to friends, family and colleagues to
sponsor you. Donors will be instantly receipted and funds transferred to Variety for credit to your car.
Contact the Variety office for more information about your online fundraising page or for any
assistance. This is a great and easy way for you to fundraise and accept funds.
If you need any help or have any queries please give Sally a call on 9819 1016 or email her on
sally.ross@variety.org.au

INTENTION TO DONATE TO VARIETY
Sometimes we are asked for an Intention to Donate to Variety Invoice which is we – on behalf of
you – send to a company you may be dealing with a form for the agreed sum of money they have
promised you with payment details. We are unable to produce a ‘Tax Invoice’ for a donation, but this
form is the acceptable alternative for most companies.
It’s simple for us to do and all we require is their details – such as contact name, company name,
address and the amount.
Call Sally Ross on 9819 1016 for further advice.
DEFINITION OF A SINGLE CAR, CORPORATE OR TEAM ENTRY
If you go to the entry form for 2015’s B to B Bash you’ll see where you need to tick what you consider
your entry to be. Following some confusion we have made a simple change which should be easy
for everyone to understand. Check these out and see where you can earn trophies for your
fundraising;
Single car Entry, non-Corporate – First trophy available = Variety Cup $17,000
Single car Entry, Corporate - First trophy available = Variety Cup $17,000
Multi car Entry, non-Corporate - First trophy available = The Catherine Trophy $75,000
Multi car Entry, Corporate - First trophy available = The Catherine Trophy $75,000
Any single or multi car entry, corporate or non-corporate car(s) = Platinum Tray $100,000
Cars can be entered into the Bash as a single car entry or a multiple car entry. Minimum Entry Fee
for each car is $8,500 and this allows up to a maximum of four (4) people. If a vehicle carries more
than four (4) people then an additional $2,500 per extra person is required to be paid.
To be considered for trophy recognition as a multi-car corporate (or even a non-corporate) entry, the
cars should all be of similar colour and design with the crew wearing the same clothing. Each car in
the entry shall pay a minimum of $8,500. A single car with corporate sponsorship can enter as a
Corporate entry also.
Remember from above, if you enter as a multi-car entry then the first available money trophy for you
is the Catherine Trophy for raising $75,000 +.
EXPLANATION OF FUNDRAISING TROPHIES
There are no trophies for speeding or special timed sections as they don’t exist on our Bash. The
Bash is not a race or a rally but rather “a drive in the Outback with a few mates” – so if speed is what
you are after, then you may need to look for another event! We do however, acknowledge and
reward teams for their fund-raising abilities. The following fundraising trophies are up for grabs;
$17,000 The Variety Cup (Individual car entry and named after the charity)
9
$25,000 The Sheridan Trophy (Individual car entry named after Catherine Variety Sheridan.
Catherine was the baby left in a box at the Sheridan Theatre on Christmas Eve, 1928)
$33,000 The Brut 33 half Cup (Individual car entry. This trophy was originally presented by the
Chairman of the Variety Bash back at the beginning, John Waterhouse, who was the importer of
Fabergé products and the deodorant, Brut 33, was one of those products. So John presented every
car that raised $33,000 with the Brut 33 Half Cup – and – if you doubled that amount you received
the next trophy, the Brut 33 Full Cup. It’s a tradition we still carry today.)
$66,000 The Brut Full Cup (Individual car entry, as explained above)
$75,000 The Catherine Trophy (For an entry of two or more cars that are colour themed together
and entered as a team. This trophy named after the baby left in the theatre - as explained in the
Sheridan Trophy.)
$100,000 Platinum Tray Award (For an individual car or multi car entry that raises in excess of
$100K)
Chairman’s Trophy (Named after the Motoring Events Chairman for the highest individual
fundraising car)
Chief Barker’s Trophy (Named after the Chairman of the Tent 56 board for highest, non-corporate,
entry fundraising car
B to B Cup (For highest fundraising corporate entry – single or multi car entry)

AGE OF BASH CARS ELIGABILITY ADJUSTED!
At a recent Motoring Events Committee meeting we agreed to move the year of eligibility for our
Bash cars from 1974 to 1976 with a maximum run on period to 1980. Any cars that are over the 1976
year model must be refereed to me for checking with our Technical Committee.
QUESTION OF THE MONTH
Who was the first person to say, "See that chicken there? I'm gonna eat the next thing that comes
outta its ass."
THAT’S IT - TIME TO GO
This is our first Bash Bulletin for the year and it comes a month early as I’ll be away in February – so there won’t
be a February edition. So that’s all I have for you at the moment but if you have anything you’d like inserted into
the March BB don’t hesitate to send it in to us at any time. Do you have any fundraisers planned? Let me know.
And as always, please feel free to contact Sally or myself at any time if we can assist you in any way in your
endeavours to join us on this year’s Bash. And remember, we are only a phone call away to help.
