HEALTH FACTS
The Fit 4 The King Day is celebrating its 4th year of delivering health outreach to an
underserved community. The health and wellness fair is designed to provide health services and
wellness education to the entire family. Free health screenings deliver access to care for
individuals who would go without medical or dental care in 2014. The areas of focus for
screenings (mammograms, prostate, BMI blood pressure, blood glucose, asthma and dental) have
the following impact numbers:
•
The American Cancer Society's estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2014:
About 232,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women; about
62,570 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and
is the earliest form of breast cancer); about 40,000 women will die from breast cancer.
•
The American Cancer Society’s estimates for prostate cancer in the United States for
2014 are: About 233,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed; about 29,480
men will die of prostate cancer; about 1 man in 7 will be diagnosed during his lifetime.
•
Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men; about 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men 65
or older. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only
lung cancer. About 1 man in 36 will die of prostate cancer.

About 1 of 5 U.S. adults with high blood pressure still do not know that they have it.

29.1 M people or 9.3% of the U.S. population have diabetes. 8.1 M people (27.8% with
diabetes are undiagnosed). Source: CDC

every year. Costs the US about $56 billion in medical costs, lost school and work days,
and early deaths in 2007. Source: CDC
