As nearly 2,000 of the world’s top Ironman athletes checked their bikes at Kailua Pier, dozens of tri
industry players tallied bikes and components for the annual litmus test of buying trends. The
annual count gives the triathlon industry a scope of what the sport’s best athletes are buying and an
idea of who will be the major players for the next few years.
After over five hours of counting, Cervelo once again dominated the count, but others are closing the
gap.

What if someone has a Profile base bar and vision extensions? Are you counting the extensions or
the base bars or do they both get a nod in the count?

More than a Kona Bike Count, It would be more interesting, and useful, to have the Kona
Flat Tire Count. I read that Ian Mickleson got a flat out of Hawi yesterday. I would like to
know what brand of tire flatted on him. The aggregate sum of most flats would be the
brand of tire to avoid. It would not be a difficult undertaking next year.

Mark from Profile and I did the aerobar count. When counting, we gave precedence to
touch points. So Profile attachment hardware/pads and a Vision basebar would be
counted as Profile. If the hardware/pads were not recognizable, the extension brand was
counted. If that was not obvious, the basebar was counted. 99% of all the data is probably
of the attachment hardware/pads.
This is the same way we have done the count for the last several years.

Thomas Craven · Chief Sports Director at Hincapie Sportswear Development Team
"I tried to be smart, and it worked out," said the second Belgian to win this event (his
coach Luc Van Lierde—no relation—took the title twice). "After last year I believed I could
do it," he said at the finish line. "I worked hard this year—I've never worked this hard. I've
never had such a feeling. It's the best I could have hoped for."

This Week in Triathlon
Sometimes the biggest surprise isn't who you see at the top of the list but rather who is at the bottom
of it. Best of luck to all racing, we'll be discussing the Kona Bike Count on TWIT over the coming
weeks.
