RACE Competence
In Pole Position
There‘s No Slipstream
To be amongst the best, strength, endurance and technique are absolutes. For 20 years
we have been among the top bicycle manufacturers and we always look for ways to get
better – just to ensure cyclists who ride Stevens bikes can better enjoy their experience.
For 20 years we have been among the top bicycle
manufacturers and we always look for ways to get
better – just to ensure cyclists who ride Stevens bikes
can better enjoy their experience. Whether they‘re
ambitious amateur athletes or professionals like Marianne Vos, Hanka Kupfernagel, Philipp Walsleben and
Niels Albert: we want them to achieve their bests.
Of course, we also devote our complete attention to
anyone who wants to have lots of fun with his bike in
daily situations.
Our series models incorporate the experience of 20
years of bike-development, used in conjunction with
highly valuable feedback from our top athletes. This
feedback helps us develop technologically mature,
high-value, lightweight and comfortable racing bikes
4
that satisfy all needs.
We care for the specifics, no matter how minor they
may be. A few gramms less weight on the rear section, half a tenth of an inch less flex at the bottom
bracket under full stress, or a tiny bit less air turbulence at the headset can make a difference, and may
even decide the race for you.
Details definitely contribute to the riding experience,
which is exactly what we put our heart and soul into.
When combined with our passion and experience,
this allows for wonderful synergy.
That‘s why we equip our innovative racing machines
with high-value components. And we let the best
riders in the world test these examples of German
engineering. See for yourself on the following pages..

1991 – 2010
STEVENS —
AHEAD SINCE ’91
From the Past into the Future. If your roots lie in racing,
you adopt a simple philosophy: Push and drive until you
reach the finish – in winning position.
6
We started out in 1991. At the first Eurobike show,
our first self-made frames saw the light. In that same
year, we developed our first carbon MTBs and racing
bikes.
STEVENS was founded by Werner and Wolfgang
von Hacht, two brothers who are long time enthusiasts
about the sport of cycling. This was the birth of a new
German brand that since then has established excellent reputation, in Germany as well as internationally.
The bikes made in Hamburg are sold in 24 countries,
and there are 500 authorized STEVENS retailers – just
in Germany. Over the last years, retailers have elected
the STEVENS bikes three times as best in “brand
attractiveness”, and in 2010 we were even named
“best bike vendor of all brands” (SAZ). Naturally, we’re
quite proud of these awards. Sometimes we still
reminisce about the ground-breaking reviews of our
mountain bikes “7.1.2” and “8.1.2”–which achieved
best ratings in renowned bike magazines – or the firstplace of our Italian racing frame “STEVENS Star”, back
in ‘95 and ‘96.
Since then, our bikes have earned numerous decorations. The STEVENS “Jazz”, which won the Stiftung
Warentest test in 2004, lay ground to our current success in the trekking and city segments. The crowning
award might have been the “Milestone of the year
2009”, which the STEVENS “Xenith” earned last year.
We also take great pride in the athletes we support:
They repay our support with championship titles and
highly valuable feedback about our bikes. Among
them are German champions, European champions,
World champions and Olympic medalists, together
representing STEVENS in almost any kind of bike racing: road racing, triathlons, cyclocross, time trials and
mountain bike racing, only to name a few.
True professionals like Jens Schwedler, Mike Kluge,
Hanka Kupfernagel, Marianne Vos, Daniel Unger, Lisa
Norden, Ralf Eggert, Philipp Walsleben, Niels Albert,
Katie Compton, Amber Neben and Arnaud Jouffroy
direct our attention to aspects that may enhance the
performance of STEVENS bikes even further. Belgian
champion Sanne Cant’s conclusion is: “STEVENS –
The best bike I ever had.“
Our developers and engineers strive to innovate
each and every year, impacting the bike scene and
enhancing your daily cycling experience. Because we
know further improvement and enhancements are
always possible.
Naturally, the achievements of the last 20 years
make us feel honored. But first and foremost, they
dictate our future duties.
We have not yet achieved our goals.
STEVENS RACE 2011
7
development
THEORY AND PRAXIS
Analysis and data to
develop great bikes.
All our key positions are filled by professionals.
8
In the STEVENS research and development department, our engineers and technicians find ideal
conditions. The laboratory is a dream-come-true
for any engineer obsessed with bike-development.
It features modern high-performance computers,
the latest software and state-of-the-art analogue
test benches. The test range right beyond our front
doors needs a mention, too.
In this office ideas and suggestions are applied
to the STEVENS bikes. If one of our top athletes
suggests an improvement to his bike, we review
and test it thoroughly. If it works, we‘ll make good
use of it. Many innovations for our Cyclocross and
road bikes have been implemented this way and we
will be continuing to do so.
Of course, our development department also runs
its own tests, independent of the opinion of racing
professionals: for instance, the stiffness of the bottom bracket and head set of our frames is measured, and forks need to prove how comfortable and
stiff they are.
It is here that suspension components get
fine-tuned for the STEVENS bikes. All our theoretical creations are put to the acid test before they are
released to the streets as technically mature
STEVENS bikes.
Should we find a single flaw – no matter how
small – the process of development, construction,
building and testing is repeated once more, until
every single test is passed and all members of the
development team are satisfied.
And our developers aren‘t easily satisfied: a maximum of esthetic functionality needs to be attained.
By the way, our engineers prefer to test outside on
the actual road – or on the trails. Just to ensure our
bikes exhibit that special vibe our computers can‘t
quite put their virtual fingers on.
STEVENS RACE 2011
9
carbon competence
STEVENS AND CARBON
The perfect bonding.
The human eye can barely distinguish individual carbon filaments. Not very surprising,
considering the fact that a single filament has a diameter of 0.006 millimeter. About ten
times less than a human hair.
10
Not your ordinary replacement program
We offer our CRASH REPLACEMENT program for all STEVENS
carbon road and mtb frames built since 2010: in case your frame
suffers irreparable damage from a fall or a crash, you can purchase
a replacement frame at a special discount of 50%. This renders the
purchase of a high-value carbon bike a safe bet – at no additional cost
to you. For the terms and conditions refer to your STEVENS retailer or
our website www.stevensbikes.com .
Nevertheless, the tensile strength of carbon fiber
is four times higher than that of the best steel alloy.
The longitudinal stiffness can even be six times that
of aluminum. Individual carbon filaments in isolation
cannot be processed, that’s why they are bundled by
roving. Roving is weaved into fabric and impregnated
with an epoxy resin.
For years, this combination of carbon fiber and resin has been setting the stiffness-weight-ratio benchmark. But to unfold its true potential, it needs to be
used as intelligently, and, most importantly, efficiently
as possible. Our STEVENS developers and engineers
have the knowledge and know-how to build perfectly
thought-through carbon frames through the use of
particularly intelligent carbon fiber layups. For example, they can build rear sections that show high lateral
stiffness, but are vertically flexible. This may sound
quite technical, but for the rider it simply means: minimal waste of pedaling effort, because your muscle
power is directed towards the pavement.
At the same time, because of its ability to show
some vertical flexibility, the carbon frame is more
comfortable. But it‘s not just the alignment of the
fabric: the thickness and even the alignment of
individual fibers in the fabric itself can be crucial.
Certain highly stressed areas of the frame get built
with parallel fiber (UD-fabric). Also, the choice
of epoxy resin can be an essential factor for the
characteristics of a carbon frame. For the most
part even the dropouts on STEVENS frames and
forks are made of the “black gold” – highest level
engineering and production.
We could run on and on about the process –
because we have 20 years of experience working
with this outstanding material.

carbon
Very
strong
Low weight and high stiffness are the central characteristics of carbon. With STEVENS bikes, intelligence is
another one, because that’s the way we use this material.
Ventoux –
The legend lives
The remarkable tube set is developed
using a hybrid process: the combination
of tube-to-tube and monocoque elements
shows class and perfect precision. The
innovative STEVENS frame is named after
the mountain in the Provence and is as
striking as its counterpart.
CARBON
technology
Multishape in Perfection
Filigree seat stays flow into the super
flat yet wide top tubes. These gain
height and volume towards the
head tube. Its smooth surface
and striking lines render the
Ventoux unique and special.
Beauty doesn‘t conflict
with technical excellence:
the combination of
great stiffness and low
weight plays in its own
league.
Comfort where it‘s crucial
How fast can we Leave Behind the Familiar?
Sportive Chassis and Sedan Chair in one
The design emphasizes the characteristics of the Ventoux: it combines a technical, angular
appearance on the stiff sections with round shapes in the flexible ones. The hexagonal
seat tube impresses with its massive size, the bottom tube features “Double Chamber”
technology with an internal vertical wall, resulting in outstanding stiffness.
A bike isn‘t symmetrical. The drive train is found on the right side; on the left, the design
of the Ventoux uses the space for huge profiles that improve stability. Sections that are
crucial to comfort are very slimly designed. Conclusion: for the perfect frame, stiff and
angular tubes need to be combined with flexible and round ones.
Tom Ritchey conceived a particularly flexible
version of the WCS carbon seat post for STEVENS.
This flexibility eliminates small vibrations and even
pronounced impacts. Advantages: longer relaxed
riding, minimal weight, strong image. Equipped
as standard on the STEVENS Ventoux and the
SLC Team 2011, optional available for all STEVENS
Custom Bikes.

Aero carbon
Slenderized
Frames
Sometimes, less is more. For instance, the amount of surface exposed to the headwind.
In frame construction, carbon allows for slim and
high-strength designs. These characteristics
enable us to build lightweight and fast frames.
26
Due to its slimmer head tube and seat post as well
as the aerodynamic optimization of the tube profiles
on the frame and the fork, the exposed surface of
the STEVENS SLR Aero was reduced by about 10%.
This will allow you to get through the wind faster.
Aero
technology
Streamlined Beauty
Airfoil-shaped, flat tube profiles and a
modern silhouette make the SLR the
ideal choice for high velocity riding.
Integrated Solutions
Esthetic and aerodynamic considerations point the
way – the SLR frame features embedded wires. The
aluminum seat clamp is neatly designed, streamlined
and thought-through as well: it clamps around the
carbon post most gently.
Dynamics and Design at its very best
The head set, drawn downwards, gives the SLR
its characteristic front. In combination with Tria
handlebars or racing cockpits, this carbon aero
frame inspires any rider. The fork, promptly pointing forward, implies maximum dynamics and highest steering precision.

Powerful Forward Drive
The STEVENS carbon forks use an optimized profile at the
head of the fork. The bottom diameter is – at 31.75 mm – larger
than the top diameter at 28.6 mm. Technological arguments
in favor of this beautiful solution: top-class weight, higher fork
stiffness and maximum durability.
Impressive Values
The STEVENS Vuelta is made from a modern Scandium alloy that allows for minimal wall thickness
and higher stiffness. The weight of the anodized version – only 1.100 gms – plays in the league of modern
carbon frames. Additionally, the anodization protects
the tube better than any other frame finish. The seat
tube is tapered towards the bottom area to combine
comfort and top-class stiffness when accelerating.
Fascination with Detail and Technological Intelligence
Forged 3D-Compact dropouts, distinct tube profiles, lightweight and high-strength

LADY
Subtle
Distinction
Naturally, we do not distinguish between men or women.
Unless we’re talking about bike frames. Our STEVENS Lady
bikes are custom-tailored to the female anatomy – and of
course to their taste.
Lady Competence:
Hanka
KupferNagel
She‘s one of the best athletes around –
and has been a key member of the STEVENS
team for several years. During our
wind tunnel tests, she found the time to
answer a few questions.
Hanka, what are your athletic goals in the
next years?
London 2012 and the cross world championship
2011 in St. Wendel are highlights – I want to be
in best shape possible and compete for one of
the top places.
What runs through your mind when racing
against the clock? All kinds of things. But the less you think, the
faster you are.
How do you cope with the pain during the race?
Good question. I haven‘t really found the recipe yet.
Forcing yourself is probably difficult. Last as long as
possible – that‘s the key.
If there would be a
“Hanka-bike”, what
would it be like?
It would be a lightweight
time-trial bike with an electric
gear system and an additional
brakelever at the extension.
46
What does your bike mean to you?
I have so many bikes. I‘d definitely say there‘s 1, 2, 3
bikes I‘d never give away, because I won a few races
with them, and I‘d never sell them, either. Other than
that, a bike is just the equipment I need to work, but
when I clean my bike before the race, the race will
often go better.

TIME TRIAL
No
Time
Our Time Trial machines will bring you to the finish. In
the most aerodynamic, esthetic and, more importantly,
fastest way possible. And now, it’s your turn. To turn
the pages – let’s see how fast you are.
Aerodynamics in Line
with Power Flow.
Optimized, airfoil-shaped profiles, perfect airflow
management, small front surface, integrated brakes
and wires, brilliantly adjustable sitting position.
These characteristics were implemented during the
development of the Volt. We also took care to achieve
a maximum of drive train efficiency. The smooth
shapes represent the flow of forces, the top tube and
the seat stay melt into one another, in accordance
with the vision to route forces along the shortest way.
It‘s evident: The Volt is designed for powerful engines.
volt
technology
Airflow Management
Time trial and triathlon cyclists know
the natural enemy: wind and the
resulting drag. Airflow-efficient tube
shapes and integrated brakes allow
for maximum speed and record times.
The esthetics deserves top grades.
Integration meets Design
A rear section without a brake – usually found on track bikes, this design renders the
Volt unique. Clean shapes and optimized airflow make the rear brake disappear below
the chain stay. The monocoque frame utilizes carbon perfectly to bring weight, design
and efficiency in line.
Flexible Position
Modular and flexible: The Ritchey WCS
saddle can be adjusted to allow for
moderate street sitting positions (74° seat
tube angle) or extreme time trial positions
(78° seat tube angle).
Routing
Clean, integrated, convenient: All control wires
are routed safely inside the lightweight carbon
frame. The Volt is also available in a Di2-variant
for the electric Shimano Dura Ace group with
equivalent routing

Time Trial Windtunnel Testing
Close
to the Wind
STEVENS engineers spend many an hour in the windtunnel. Together with STEVENS top athletes and the
measuring-team of the low-speed windtunnel of Dresden-Klotzsche, Germany, they ran countless tests.
The goal: maximum efficiency, highest speeds, top times and of course championship titles.
54
Airflow analysis in the windtunnel is done at a
windspeed of 45 km/h and with two inflow angles
(0° and 10°). The tangential forces of the system of
rider/bike are measured in reverse riding direction.
Frame models exhibit differences of about
5 - 10 %. The difference between a time trial bike and
a classic street bike can be up to 25 %.
Variations in height and shape of the rim profiles
can make for significant airflow improvements.
The most important aspect is the rider though.
The lower he sits and the slimmer and smaller his
shape is, the easier it is to fool the wind. That‘s why
time trial world champions Hanka Kupfernagel (photo)
and Amber Neben (USA) chose the lowest handlebar
position for their Volt and Crono racing machines:
“The ladies‘ time trials are rather short and I put
everything into them, so the extremely low position
accommodates me well. I wouldn‘t get through a long
Ironman distance this way, though”, says cross and
time trial specialist Hanka Kupfernagel.
Top athletes optimize their sitting position in the
windtunnel. Beforehand, we tuned our STEVENS
time trial and triathlon machines for minimal drag
coefficients. After the development of the STEVENS
Volt in the previous year, we focused on the
optimization of the cockpit. For you and your
personal records we equip time trial bikes with the
ergonomically and aerodynamically elaborate
top-class aerobars 3ttt Auro Pro and Brezza Team.
Additionally, we redesigned the Crono TT. The
Crono TT 11 is an innovative machine, fresh in the
STEVENS program, with adjusted seat and bottom
tubes as well as embedded wires. Aerodynamically
optimized wheels and a cockpit in matching color
round off the picture.

cyclocross
yeah!
yeah! yeah!
If cycling is classical music, Cyclocross is punk rock.
Cyclocross-races are tough, extremely dirty and
demand everything from the rider and their equipment.
Our profession is to provide the latter.
5 questions to:
Niels Albert &
Phillip walsLeben
They‘re permanently found in top positions – in national and international competitions. They‘re a team, win world cup
races and ride on STEVENS cyclocross
bikes. Now they‘re with us to answer our
questions.
What are your goals for the season 2011?
Philipp Walsleben: I‘d like to renew my German
Championship title, and also it would be great to
place among the top ten at the world championships.
Niels Albert: Having a consistent season, winning
leagues and championships. You have to set your
own goals, that‘s extra motivation to achieve them.
Can you tell us about the importance of
cyclocross? Would you agree that it‘s a
“coming” discipline?
Philipp Walsleben: Cyclocross is getting increasingly
more interesting for amateurs and thus for sponsors
and manufacturers, as well. That the world championships will take place in the USA is a strong sign for
the popularity of this sport.
Niels Albert: In my opinion cyclocross still has potential to grow. Cyclocross is still often seen as the
little brother of road racing. Personally, I hope this
will change further in the next years. But I‘m quite
confident, because in Belgium the races really are
quasi-fairs and absolute crowd-pullers, and it‘s even
getting bigger.
Do a few grams less make a noticeable difference
during a race? For example when you have shouldered your bike for the 30th time?
Philipp Walsleben: Sure, over the course of the race
you notice any weight advantage.
Niels Albert: A few grams might not be noticed, but
100 grams are of course noticeable. When I switched
to a STEVENS bike, I was spontaneously amazed.
In worse weather during the winter, the bikes often
are covered with mud, you’ll easily notice the weight
difference.
The STEVENS Carbon Team bike is considered
extremely agile. Can you confirm that impression?
Can you think of a race situation where you really
took advantage of this agility?
Philipp Walsleben: The agility is of advantage all the
time. In mud, sand as well as on ice you can control
your bike better.
Niels Albert: During the more technical races like
Kalmthout or Oostmalle it’s certainly an advantage.
During any and all races with a lot of turns.
Can you describe what you think 1 second before
the start?
Philipp Walsleben: Not much, actually. Full concentration for the starting signal.
Niels Albert: Give your best… You don’t need to start
thinking anymore in this moment. Your already need
to have a clear head, you need to have a plan A and a
plan B. And your legs need to do the rest.

Left
In Track racing, you’ll always go left, in an anticlockwise direction. With our innovative STEVENS
Track bikes you’ll arrive ahead of time. Extremely
fast.
interview:
marianne
vos
She is successful. She is fast. Very, very
fast. Also in answering our questions.
The century-talent.
Marianne, in your country, there is a cycling
route named “Marianne Vos cycling way”.
Proud? And: How come this route got named
after you?
The cycling route is the lap of 28,3 km which we
ride in my ’home race‘, the ’7 villages tour of Aalburg‘. After my 3rd cyclocross Worlds‘ win in 2010,
our communtiy named the lap to me. There is a
rest bank with my name on the place the honouring
was held. It‘s a great honour people can ride the
’Marianne Vos route‘ and rest on my own bank.
What do you like about track cycling?
The speed and the tactics you‘ve to use in the
races. If you feel good and you can keep on going
whole race, that‘s the best feeling on the track I‘ve
had. During a points race you‘ve to make choices
to go for sprints, to wait, to try to take a lap, etc. So
you‘ve to be phycically strong, mentally ready and
concentrated from the first untill the last meter.
Is Olympic gold worth more than a Worldchampion-Win?
It’s difficult to compare an Olympic gold with a
World title, because Olympic Games are so much
bigger than a World Championship. I can say for
me my Olympic title is my most valuable win, because it’s the biggest platform you can perform on.
What do you like about your STEVENS track
bike?
The STEVENS track bike is a comfortable, but
also stiff bike, so the power delivered to the pedals
is directly converted into speed. The bike gives me
the solid feeling I need.
How do you feel as an Olympic Champion on
Track, who is on the side also Road Champion,
Time Trial Champion, Cyclocross Champion?
Is this a question of mentaliy, the “will to win”,
or concentration on the sport and good talent
and training?
Of course I‘m gifted with a talent for the different
disciplines of cyling, which I want to use in the best
way. Then for me it doesn‘t matter what kind of
bike I‘m on, which soil I‘m on, I just love to compete
on a bike. If I do something, I want to do it proper,
so I work had and give myself 110 %. It‘s really
great to have titles on all these different disciplines
and I hope I manage to add some more on my
palmares in he upcoming years.
Some of your colleagues ride also STEVENS.
Like Sanne Cant, Hanka Kupfernagel, Katie
Compton... Does this mean you feel like
teammates or everybody searches for own
luck rather?
We‘re all friends and and give each other the
best, but in the race we are rivals and we will
challenge each other in a fair way. That‘s the
beauty of sports.
What are your aims for 2011? (sportswise)
With my performances of the past few years,
for me it‘s the most important to enjoy cycling
and higher my level for the Olympic year 2012. Of
course the World Championships are important for
me, starting with defending my cross title, then the
track Worlds in my home country and of course
the road Worlds, where I‘ll give it another try for the
rainbow jersey.
And in life generally?
Secret ;-)

STEVENS RACE 2011

interview:
Joachim
paproth
Foto l,m: Hoshi Yoshida
The wheel manufacturer Citec is
STEVENS‘ wheel partner
Citec is a small but nice vendor. How does your
manufacturing process work?
The Citec system wheels are manufactured just outside of Berlin in Beelitz. The hubs are produced using
the patented Power Block sleeve technology with
modern CNC machines. Many rim profiles we produce
completely ourselves using computer-controlled
special-purpose machines, some of which we even
developed ourselves. All final assembly is done inhouse, as well.
You did very well in the latest “Tour”-reviews. What
are the crucial aspects of wheel development?
Wheels need to be lightweight, aerodynamic and
stiff. Successfully combining all three characteristics
is difficult. Our patented designs enabled us to
find optimal solutions for the different purposes of
80
system wheels. The press honors this philosophy
with good reviews.
How important is the spoke count and the spoke
tension for the construction and the aerodynamic
properties?
In principle you can achieve much better aerodynamic
properties with a lower spoke count. Of course you
need to compensate for the reduced stability with
innovative technologies like our Power Block system
or our Concave system rims.
Tips for the wheel maintenance?
With our Power Block technology, permanent retruing and adjusting tension is unnecessary. The hubs
should be greased and checked once a year by a
bicycle dealer.
How did you get interested in wheel construction
and what‘s your favorite wheel type?
Even in school I was impressed with the road bike
of my present business associate, Moritz Friebel.
I wanted one, too. Several years of active bicycle
sport followed, with the production of my own disk
wheels, too – that‘s when CITEC came into being.
There‘s no one type of wheel ideal for any purpose.
Thus it‘s best to use a set of system wheels optimal
for your intended purpose. A STEVENS retailer is well
acquainted with the selection of wheels.
SCORPO
wheels
Main Pivot
The wheels are crucial for the characteristics of a bike. We do not compromise on the quality of bearings, smooth running, runout, stiffness and most important: safety.
That‘s why we work with the best wheel manufacturers. In 2011, our Scorpo Carbon C and T models are produced exclusively by CITEC. These new models have a 15%
optimized stiffness on the front wheel (55 N/mm), and on the rear wheel an even 30% increased lateral stiffness (45 N/mm) in relation to the predecessors. They surely
can compete with far heavier alloy-wheels, as far as solidity is concerned.

The Dike
Crew
We are lacking the mountains – but its always windy.
On the dikes near Hamburg, figures and data is collected during our theoretical frame design process
and converted into bare emotions and new insights.
How does the fork feel when riding out of the sad82
dle, how stiff is the bottom bracket during sprints,
how direct does the bicycle react to steering? And:
How does the material cope with long-term tests
with distances of over 10,000 km or in permanent
rain or winter weather? The insights gained flow
back into the STEVENS development process –
a quite perfect circular flow.
