I had played baseball and football into high school, and as I got older church softball fed the competition that I enjoyed. Age has a way of catching up with everyone and soon the mind would say you can get to that ball and throw. The body however was not as cooperative, then I found archery, and no running that was a plus. I found that archery was completely different from any sport that I had been involved with previously. All the sports baseball, football, and golf, you stayed still then reacted to the ball. With archery it was the art of holding still, the harder I tried the worse it got. I talked to people about how to practice, with baseball you worked on fielding or hitting and when you came to the game everything came together. Archery was different it was very frustrating. I started with used equipment and then improved my equipment as I went along. I just didn't know what I was doing, I mimicked what the good shooters were shooting at the rangem I even bought a new bow that did not fit and a release that I did not know how to shoot properly. I often joked that I could drop arrows and not hit the ground. If you could do anything wrong in the archery shot I was doing it. Then one day, I shot with someone that told me he could help me enjoy archery. I jumped at the chance and the rest they say is history. He gave me a shot sequence, taught me how to tune my equipment, and what to look for when buying new equipment. The point I am trying to make is a new bow will not make you a better shooter, the new sight and scope will not put you in the top of your class. When I became involved with archery 15 years ago an archery coach was someone that won tournaments. That did not mean that they could coach you, I just got lucky and found the right person. Today we have certified archery coaches. With the increased popularity of archery we now have 3 levels of instructors. Levels 1 is a beginner, this will teach you just basic form, Level 2 will take that level 1 shooter and work on refining those basic skills. A Level 3 certified instructor will help you set up equipment and fine tune that shot sequence. Missouri Bow Hunters has several Level 3 certified coaches, Henry Houk, Steve Lanier, Kathy Potter, Lonnie Nicholas, Jeff Friedmann and Larry Skinner. If I have missed someone, I do apologize. These people have become Level 3 coaches because they have a love of archery and helping people enjoy archery. Before you spend $$ on arrows, or a release contact a certified archery coach. Because the money you spend on a coach will make you a better shooter. Owner: Jeff Friedmann, 636-‐742-‐ 2531 News from Nodaho Bowhunters Nodaho Bow Hunters was well represented at the Senior Games in Columbia at Stevens Park on June 13. Participants were Rick Horn, Richard Piveral, Tom & Jenell Ciak, Bill Brookshier, Jerry Brookshier, Janice Gard and Marsha Criger. It was a good day for the long-‐distance shoot – the wind was pretty calm and the rain held off until the very last end when it cut loose and poured for the last six arrows, then it quit for the awards and started again as we were leaving the park. Of the eight shooters, six brought home medals – great job guys!!! The winner of the Free Shoot in the Fun Class was Gus Smith, and Jason Berg beat out the other competitors in the long shot. Many thanks to the Nodaho “team” that didn’t go because they were busy that Saturday setting up the Range for our 3-‐D shoot on Sunday, June 14. The weather held off while they set up the new range on “A” side, but unfortunately it rained that night and into the morning of our shoot, creating some muddy conditions. Still, 94 shooters showed up to enjoy the day with us and some terrific scores were turned in. Larry Mincy shot a 402 in the Senior Class. There was a tie in the Bowhunter class for the top spot with a score of 409, but Tim Huninger took first with 15-‐12’s followed by Brandon Redmond with 14-‐12’s for second. If that wasn’t close enough, in the Open division there was a tie for 2nd & 3rd that found Brett Nelson and Eric Howard tied with a score of 401 with 13-‐12’s each, so we had to go to 10’s to find a winner. Brett ended up taking 2nd with 19-‐10’s followed closely by Eric’s 16-‐10’s. Steven Marriott turned in a score of 430 to take 1st. Complete results can be found on our web site www.nodahobowhunters.com or Facebook. Don't Miss Out! I hope everyone had a happy and safe 4th of July, and hope to see you at our next shoot on July 12. Remember our Appreciation Shoot will be held on August 9. Hope to see you soon! Conservation Committee I just returned from attending the MDC Regulations Committee meeting in Jefferson City on July 2, 2015. This is the meeting where the nine MDC committee members decide whether to approve or disapprove the proposed deer regulation changes that have been recommended by the MDC deer biologists. There were about 30 of us in the room that were opposed to allowing crossbows during the archery season. I, Dick Wood, Butch Herold, Darren Haverstick (United Bowhunters of Missouri V.P.), and Brandon Butler (Conservation Federation of Missouri Executive Director) all voiced our disapproval of the crossbow change. MDC deer biologist Jason Sumners presented the proposed changes and his reasons for recommending them. In the end all nine committee members voted in favor of the changes. There will be a 30 day comment period to allow the public to comment of the changes and then they will be voted on by the 4 member Conservation Commission on August 18, 2015. If the Commissioners vote to approve the changes they will take effect during the 2016-‐2017 deer season. Summary of recommended changes to the 2016-‐2017 Deer Season: Firearms Season Changes • Maintain the current timing of the November portion and reduce the length to 9-‐days • Expand the late youth portion to 3-‐days beginning the first Friday after Thanksgiving • Reduce the limit of antlered deer to 2 total per hunter with only one buck allowed by firearms method. This was changed from previous proposal. You may take one buck with archery & one with firearm or 2 with archery. Conservation Area Changes • Simplify conservation area regulations by limiting methods and use of firearms and archery antlerless permits It was interesting to me that not one single person attended the meeting who spoke in favor of crossbows. The committee chairman MDC Deputy Director Tom Draper made it a point to tell the rest of the committee that MDC must provide maximum “opportunity” to the public to hunt deer as long as the resource (deer population) was not negatively impacted. It seemed to me as though the decision had been made to recommend the crossbow change before this meeting ever happened. If you’re OK with these changes it looks like they will happen now. If you were against and you didn’t voice your opinion then you have no one to blame but yourself. Happy Bow Hunting, Jeff Blystone jandkbly@gmail.com cell #816-‐806-‐3574 • Reduce the length of the antlerless portion to 3-‐days and begin on the first Friday in December • Eliminate the urban zones portion Archery Season Changes • Allow crossbows as a legal method during the archery deer and turkey season ! Large and Small Game Committee I only received 2 Spring Turkey Harvest Reports this year. 1. Don Witte, Rosebud, 21 lb. Tom, 10.5” beard, shot on 4/20/15 at 6:25am in Gasconade Co. Don used a PSE bow set at 65 lbs, Gold Tip arrow and a fixed blade Muzzy broadhead from a ground blind to harvest his first Spring Gobbler. 2. Jim Brinkmann, Labadie, 23 lb. Tom, shot on 4/22/15 at 8:00am in Franklin Co. Jim used a compound bow set at 55 lbs. with a mechanical Vortex broadhead to make the 10 yard shot from his blind. Jim is a true archery turkey slayer! This was Jim’s 82nd archery turkey kill! Don has turned in several deer reports over the years including 2 bucks in the 2014 season. At 64 years old this was Don’s first Spring Turkey kill and earned him the MBH 1st Spring Turkey Award. Don received a framed certificate and a $25 Bass Pro Shops gift card. Congratulations Don!
