Myself and my fiancé,
fellow MBH'er Cheryl
Earhart, recently returned
from our trip to the east
coast and the Province of
New Brunswick, Canada.
We had never been to the
east coast and thoroughly
enjoyed the scenery.
We went by Niagara falls
on the way up and swung
down through Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania on the way
home.
We bought fresh lobster,
shrimp and scallops on the
coast, saw moose, grouse
and snowshoe rabbits, but
the main purpose of our
trip was to hunt Black
Bear.
In spite of the record high
temps (85-90 degrees) we
had a great hunt and saw
many bruins. We were fortunate to take our bears on
the same night (different
baits) and be able to take
our pictures together.
Cheryl used her fifty pound
Hoyt 737 and Easton Full
Metal Jackets, while I chose
my fifty two Black Widow
recurve and Three-Rivers
"Traditional Only" carbon
arrows.
We both used NAP Razor
cap broadheads. Cheryl's
bear traveled less than 50
yards and mine made it only
30.
The bears were in excellent
condition, beautifully thick
pelts and no rubbed spots.
We can now say that we
have taken bears from
one side of Canada to
the other.
In 2007 we both took
bears from Canada's
west coast, British Columbia. Spring bear
hunting is a lot of fun
and excitement.
Do your best to make
your bow hunting
dreams come true, we
only experience time
on this earth once so
make the most of it!
Hope to see you in
camp someday....…

Missouri Bow Hunters Members:

Both bears were taken on the same night allowing Tim and Cheryl to get the photo (on
the left) taken together.

A message from your President
Here we go! MBH has officially entered into cyberspace. It has not been an easy ride. Terry and
Kathy have been working nonstop to make this
happen in time for the July issue. Like anything
new, there will be some bugs to work out. Patience is the key. This move has been in the works
since the Board voted on it at the January meeting. Kathy has been sending out login and password information for the past month. There are still
quite a few members who have not sent their
email information to Kathy. If you know someone
who is having trouble with this procedure, either offer to help them or
contact one of us so we can try to get them online as soon as possible. Some recent feedback that we have been receiving is the concern that we will lose members because of this. The truth is, if all
MBH has to offer a new member is the promise of a monthly newsletter, than we are in sad shape. MBH is so much more than just a
monthly calendar of events. We need to focus on all of the positive
things that have been happening and are in the works.
Our new advertising flyer has a long list of MBH accomplishments.
The hunters, competitive archers, as well as the Sunday shooter
have enjoyed many rewards from the hard work of MBH over the past
Fifty years. It might be a good idea to try to showcase some of these
items in future Releases.
It has started off as a very busy summer. Missouri should be very
proud, in that we have several of the top shooters in the country.
Most of these guys and gals travel all over the country competing in
their respective venues. There are a number of target shoots as well
as some national 3D's that our shooters have been attending and
many of them will be bringing home some hardware to show off. In
some cases, they will have one of those big cardboard checks to
take to the bank. Still some of the best things brought back are pictures, broken arrows and new memories. Good luck to all of the competitors this summer!
The State outdoor is just a few weeks. July 14th. Remember that
there will be a BofR meeting after Saturday's shooting. Any and all
are invited to attend and take part in the meeting. Don't forget to bring
your nominations for President and Vice-President.
We have listened to the members about the State 3D. We are going back to a two day format. Carroll County Bow Hunters will be
hosting it on the weekend of August 11th & 12th. I believe that the
Board has come up with a tournament that will appeal to everybody
this year. The registration form is in this issue. Please try to register
early. It really helps those doing all of the paperwork. That would be
Kathy, not me
.
The MBH Youth Bow fishing tournament will be held Saturday July
14th at Bledsoe Ferry In Warsaw. Special thanks to Kent Hayes and
the rest of the Dott Archery crew for keeping this shoot going for the
kids! This fish shoot would have not been possible without them
.
The Release has a new editor and publisher. Diane Harlan will be
publishing the Release as of July. All articles, stories, pictures, and
advertising, or anything else of interest should still be sent to Ryan
Fitzgerald at ryanfitz@charter.net. Calendar of event dates will still
go the secretary at potter.mbh@cvalley.net. Diane can be reached at
charlan70@gmail.com or (660) 651-8306.

The Thrill of the Tournament!
There are very few things that I
can compare to being on the stand
and waiting for that big buck to
come trotting down the tree line.
Also, nothing can compare to
chatting it up with your hunting
buddies about that P&Y size deer
you saw or that one that got
away. Frankly, the rush of harvesting, or even just seeing deer
on the stand is awfully hard to
beat. But the closest thing to it is
a good archery tournament. Not
only is pushing you skills as an
archer incredibly fun, but it’s the
whole experience. The people, the
challenge, the brotherhood, and
the fellowship that is in our sport
are absolutely incredible. For example, I had a great opportunity
to travel half way across the state
to Three Rivers Bowhunters in
Hermann, Missouri to shoot an
ASA qualifier. This turned into
an all-around great tournament
for me. I started out by meeting
some really great folks as well as
shooting with them. Along with
that, it was one of the most
unique 3D ranges I have ever
been to.
The majority of the
shots at the shoot were shots that
I have always wanted to see.
There was a white goat target
that was nearly 40-45 feet above
the shooter on a bluff at 30 something yards. Just imagine trying
to shoot the sun at noon and
that’s a pretty good representation of the shot! Numerous shots
where either uphill or downhill
with a great variation of targets
left me feeling like I became a
better shooter afterwards.
NODAHO BOW HUNTERS, INC.
Several Nodaho members traveled to
Columbia and met up with our friends
from NWMAC, Ed & Marsha Criger
on June 9 for the Missouri State Senior
Games to compete in the Target Archery event . In this event, 30 arrows are
shot at 60 yards, 30 at 50 yards and 30
at 40 yards. I’m not going to tell you
the age divisions to protect the vain,
but winning in their respective divisions were - GOLD: Tim Randall, Jenell Ciak, Marsha Criger and Rick Horn.
SILVER: Bill Brookshier & Tom
Ciak. Encountering some equipment
issues, Jerry Brookshier took 4th in his
division.
Our “Traditional Only” shoot was
deemed a success even though participation was down in part by the Senior
Games date conflict on June 9. In the
Male division, Brad Nail took 1st with a
score of 323 followed by Trent Hamilton with a 297 and Fred Nail with a
268. Linda Hankins won the Female division with a score of 211, and Colton
Hankins the kid’s division with a score of
286.
My tip to anyone reading this
is taken a few weekends to get
out and try a new club. Challenge yourself with a new
course and become a better
shooter! In conclusion, the next
time you find yourself at an
archery tournament (field, 3D,
indoor, whatever!), jump in a
group with someone you’ve
never shot with. You would be
absolutely surprised the great
people who you might meet.

Here are the results of the last 3-D shoot at the Bench Rest Rifle

be too many and would take up too much space in the Release.

The Northside outdoor range is in
pretty good shape. It’s just hard to keep
up with those growing weeds because
of the rain.
Thanks to Bill Myers and Alex Tagle
who took a weed eater to whole range
and made it look a whole lot better.
Thanks also to Alex for trimming the
eighty yard walk-up so we have two
shooting positions again. Thanks to one
and all that came out this year and
helped to get the range ready. You all
know who you are and I thank you very
much.
We have put about 113 man/woman
hours into getting the range in shape to
shoot our Tuesday evening league and
still have a little more to do before our
Field tournament planned for this year,
on July 8th . That is one week prior to
the State Outdoor.

Thanks again to one and all that came out and shot with us.
If you just want to practice, we have a very nice indoor range
at 301 Tecumseh Street in St Charles and the range is open to
public shooting Sunday Noon-4pm unless there is a tournament. Also now on Tuesday evenings 7:00 pm-10:00 pm and
Wednesdays 9:30 am-1pm, Friday 7:00 pm-10:00 pm and
Saturday evenings 7:00 pm-10:00 pm. For information call:
636-723-9338 at the indoor range.
Until the next time, keep shooting, and forget about the arrow
you just missed. It’s already gone and there isn’t anything else
you can do about it. Don’t think about what you did wrong with
the last shot, the think about how you want to do the right thing
the next shot. Just get your head screwed on right for the next
shot and I think you will see better results.

Dave Ireland tie for1st place with an average of 275.2 with Brian Dufaux with
an average of 275.2, , and Bill Myers 2nd

LARGE & SMALL GAME COMMITTEE
Congratulations to the MBH member Jim

Award for the third year in a row and for the
fourth time in the last five years. His bird was
killed on opening day at 9:30am with a 12 yd.
shot and to yours truly for earning the Last
Spring Turkey Award. I killed a Jake on May
4th at 8:31am. Leave it up to me to create a
new award and then win it. I only had four
turkey reports from 3 MBH hunters. I am kind
of disappointed as I know there were more
birds than that taken but you missed out on
your chance at a cool award plaque and gift
for not entering your bird.
Let’s continue our countdown of the
MBH All Time Deer. This month will
be the #6 & #5 Deer.
MBH All Time P&Y Typical Bucks’.
The #6 buck was killed on private
ground in Boone County by Robert
Hagans on October 11, 1986. The 5x6
buck scored 157&7/8 P&Y.
Typical Buck #5 was an 11point
158&0/8 P&Y deer. Traditional Archer
Charles Myers killed it with a 75lb Barnett Renegade Recurve. His Easton
2219 arrow and Butterfield Brute
broadhead passed completely through
the buck from 32 yards away. The

MBH All Time P&Y Non-Typical Buks’.
The #6 Non-Typical buck was killed in Ray
County by Bob Brown in 2003. That 15
point buck scored 159&6/8 P&Y. Bob took
a 20 yard shot on November 9th at 9am using
his Mathews Conquest compound bow with
a Snyper mechanical broadhead.
That same year of 2003 Non-Typical Buck
#5 was killed, it scored 160&3/8 P&Y. Mike
Manion used a Mathews bow as well to harvest his 13 pointer. An Easton XX75 arrow
and a Muzzy

from 8 in 2011 to a total of 12 participants this year. Great news all
around!!
A HUGE thanks goes out to everybody
that participated in the Midwest Sectional
Outdoor Championship on June
23rd/24th. Independence Bow Hunters did
another fine job hosting the tournament for
our area. Congratulations to all the MBH
members who earned Sectional Championship awards. A special congratulations
goes out to MBH member Beau Collins
who won Cub Male Freestyle with a score
of 1120 which was also the HIGHEST
score of the entire tournament!
The NFAA sanctioned State Outdoor
Championship will be July 14th-15th.
IBH will also be hosting this event.
Let’s keep the momentum going and
see if we can break last year’s record
for attendance for this tournament, as
well! If you are new to field archery
there is no better opportunity to come
out and learn about the sport. We will
group you with knowledgeable shooters that are anxious to help you learn.
I’m pleased to report that participation for
the event was up…I mean REALLY up. In
2011 total participation (both locations)
was 67. This year we had 83 scores
turned in. That’s an increase of almost

In addition to the all-time top ten deer
list MBH also gives awards for First
Deer, Last Deer, Lucky Deer (by
weight), Biggest Buck (by weight),
Biggest Doe (by weight), and Top P&Y
Typical and Non-Typical Bucks for the
current year. We also have an award
for the First Fall Turkey and what we
call the Grand Slam Award which is
given to any MBH bowhunter who harvests 2 deer and 2 turkeys filling their
season tags. Rule #1 to follow is that
you must be an MBH member to receive awards.
NFAA Headquarters will also host the
NFAA 3D Unmarked National Championship. Registrations will be taken right up
to the day of the events. Just check out
the NFAA website for more details at

Over the past two and a half years there
have been 11 CWD-infected deer detected
at private hunting preserves in Macon and
Linn counties. The MDC conducted intensive sampling of free-ranging deer in
the surrounding area and found 5 deer that
tested positive for the disease. As a result
the Conservation Commission in its May
meeting approved regulation changes
aimed at limiting the spread of CWD in
free-ranging deer. A CWD Containment
Zone consisting of Adair, Chariton, Linn,
Macon, Sullivan, & Randolph counties
has been formed. MDC & agriculture
officials supervised the removal of deer
from the affected hunting preserves.
MDC will continue testing of free-ranging
deer in the Containment Zone. Since the
disease is spread from deer to deer regulations limiting the placement of grain, salt,
minerals, and other deer attractants that
artificially bring deer together in high
numbers will go into effect on October
30th. The antler-point restriction has also
been rescinded for the containment-zone
counties during the 2012-2013 hunting
seasons. To further reduce the chances of
spreading CWD, MDC is asking hunters
who shoot deer within the Containment
Zone not to take whole deer carcasses out
of the zone.
Even within the Containment Zone, it is
important to properly dispose of deer carcasses by taking them to approved landfills or burying them deep enough to prevent scavengers from digging them up.
This is a very serious threat to our deer
herd. The disease is always fatal and deer
can only be tested for CWD by sampling
brain or spinal column tissue so the deer
must be killed to sample for the disease.
The abnormal proteins know as prions
that cause CWD can last in the ground for
years so the hope is to contain it for as
long as possible. To learn more about
Missouri’s CWD management strategy
and express your opinions on the subject,
visit http://mdc.mo.gov/landwater-care/
animal-management/animal-diseases/
deer-diseases/chronic-wasting-disease .
It time to go on line at http://mdc.mo.gov/
hunting-trapping/deer-hunting/20122013-managed-hunts and apply for the
special manage hunts that the Missouri
department of Conservation conducts
every year. The application period is July
1st through August 15th. You will be notified of the selection by September 14
2012. It’s a simple process and you may
get an opportunity to hunt a great area.
Even if you don’t get drawn for one of
the hunts this year you still earn preference points so that your chances are better for next years draw. On the same
web page you can look up the 2011
manage hunt selection and harvest data.
All of last year’s hunts are listed with
your chances of getting drawn for any
particular hunt and what the hunter success rate was for all of the hunts. It’s
also time to start shooting your bow in
earnest to prepare for the upcoming season. One of the best ways to practice
that I know of is to shoot 3D tournaments. One tourney you will want to
attend for sure is the MBH State 3D
Championship held this year in Carrollton. It will be a two day event that is
sure to challenge your archery skills.
Happy Bow Hunting
