Philly.com/BroadStreetRun View our 2016 photo gallery and additional run images from previous years Philadelphia Media Network is a proud sponsor of the Broad Street Run Tribute to Joe Cook From Race Director Jim Marino Dear Runners, Welcome to the 37th annual Blue Cross Broad Street Run. Joe Cook was my mentor, friend, and guiding force in the success of the Blue Cross Broad Street Run for many years. The race was his baby and he brought it from infancy to the teenage years with great success. The entire race staff and I were lucky enough to pick up his great organizational skills as we worked closely together year after year on the Blue Cross Broad Street Run, the Philly Marathon, and numerous other activities and events for the Parks and Recreation Department. He always kept an eye on me to make sure we were doing things the right way. I always appreciated his comments and critiques. These critiques continued to help me build upon his great work. I have always said that the Blue Cross Broad Street Run was Joe’s race and that I just happened to be carrying the torch. Now the Blue Cross Broad Street Run is the sixth largest race in the country (of any distance) in large part due to the great groundwork set by Joe Cook. I know I speak on behalf of all of Joe’s fellow coworkers when I say that it was a true pleasure to be a part of his team. This year’s race is dedicated to the memory of Joe Cook, Blue Cross Broad Street Run Race Director from 1982 to 1995. A Vietnam veteran, and a long time Parks and Recreation employee, Joe was a gentle, caring, and extremely dedicated civil servant. Joe’s contributions to the Parks and Recreation Department programs were quite extensive. In addition to his role for Broad Street, he played major roles in the formation of the Philadelphia Marathon, the Dragon Boat Races, the Rowing Camp at Lloyd Hall, and served on numerous committees that produced hundreds of athletic contests throughout the city for more than 25 years. We cherish our memories of Joe and carry on his legacy. Thank you, Jim Marino Race Director, Blue Cross Broad Street Run Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Race Program and Information Guide 3 “I am proud to welcome runners and spectators to the 37th annual Blue Cross Broad Street Run, the nation’s largest 10-mile race boasting more than 40,000 runners. The Blue Cross Broad Street Run highlights the City’s iconic avenue, Broad Street, a 13-mile street that traverses a large cross-section of Philadelphia’s distinct and close-knit neighborhoods. This race provides a great opportunity to experience many of those neighborhoods.” -Mayor Jim Kenney “The Blue Cross Broad Street Run provides more than 40,000 runners with a fun and enriching athletic experience, and takes them on a scenic journey through a variety of Philadelphia neighborhoods. Parks & Recreation staffers are crucial to the success of the race; they have planned and managed the Blue Cross Broad Street Run for the past 37 years and we couldn’t do it without them. I thank them for their efforts and I wish all of our runners well.” -Kathryn Ott-Lovell Parks & Recreation Commissioner 4 2016 Blue Cross Broad Street Run “This is our 37th annual Blue Cross Broad Street Run. This Philadelphia tradition allows families to join together to participate in a fun and safe activity year after year.” -Susan Slawson First Deputy Commissioner of Recreation and Programs “The Blue Cross Broad Street Run is the nation’s largest tenmiler and one of the signature events that makes our region a special place to live. Tens of thousands of us come out to race, cheer on friends and family, and take part in a unique experience that you can have only here in Philadelphia. It’s been our honor at Independence Blue Cross to sponsor the run for the last 20 years. The run is one of many fitness events we sponsor to encourage everyone in our community to get moving, get fit, and stay well. To every runner, including thousands of our members and hundreds of our associates, we commend you for taking an active role in your health. Be safe and have fun!” -Daniel J. Below are some tips on where to leave your car and the best way to get to the start area. Parking for runners There is no parking available at the start area, on Pattison Avenue, or inside The Navy Yard. If you are driving, we recommend that you park at one of the following locations: • The Stadium Complex in Citizens Bank Park and the Wells Fargo Center lots • FDR Park (enter from Pattison Avenue, across from the NovaCare Complex). One side of roadway only or vehicles will be towed. You must park in designated areas and adhere to parking regulations. The Philadelphia Parking Authority and the Philadelphia Police Race Program and Information Guide Department will enforce normal parking restrictions. Parking areas are not controlled by the Blue Cross Broad Street Run and are made available at the courtesy of various sports facilities. Cars parked in Citizens Bank Park lots must be cleared by 11:30 a.m. due to the Phillies home game. We urge runners to carpool with each other and arrive early to park. All lots will open by 5:30 a.m. and will be closed as they are filled. Once you’ve parked, you may either take a designated shuttle or the Broad Street Subway Line to the start area. To find out how, see page 14. Visit broadstreetrun.com for the most up-todate status on parking availability on race day. 13 GETTING TO THE START The start area is located on the grounds of the Central High School Field at Broad Street and Somerville Avenue in the Olney section of Philadelphia. We recommend using SEPTA, who continues their support of the Blue Cross Broad Street Run by making it easy and free for runners to reach the start area on the day of the race. Broad Street Line To reach the start area, runners may ride SEPTA’s Broad Street Subway Line for free. Simply display your official race bib to the cashier at any Broad Street Line station. You must wear your race bib on the front of your shirt. Trains will run to the start area beginning at 5:30 a.m. on the morning of the race, and SEPTA will provide express trains from Pattison Avenue. It takes approximately 35 minutes to travel from the AT&T Station stop near the finish line parking areas to the Olney Transportation Center, a few blocks north of the start area. Express trains, when operating, take about 20 minutes. You may also board a local train at any other station on the Broad Street Line. Express trains will run without stopping as soon as they become full. Center City boarding 14 should be done at the Walnut/Locust stop. The race will start promptly at 8 a.m. under police supervision. It is in your best interest to board a train before 6 a.m. and to allow yourself time for any unfortunate delays. Departure times may vary. Regional Rail If you are coming from outside of the city, you may use Regional Rail services to reach the Broad Street Line. Regional Rail will be operating on a special schedule. Shuttle services Shuttle buses will be located at the AT&T Pavilion and will take you directly to the starting line before the race. After the race, all shuttle buses from The Navy Yard will bring you back to the parking lots. Please look for the designated shuttle bus stops, which will be clearly marked so that everyone may board safely. USE SEPTA Avoid driving altogether and take Regional Rail into Center City and the Broad Street Line to the start area. Visit septa.org for train and subway schedules. 2016 Blue Cross Broad Street Run WHEN IT’S FINALLY TIME TO REST YOUR HEAD, LET SEPTA’S 24-HOUR SERVICE GET YOU TO BED. We will not accept any personal backpacks or other large bags at gear check on race day; you must have a clear bag. You can check your gear on any bus — buses will not be loaded by bib number. Look for the yellow school buses near the starting line to load your gear. At the finish, display your gear check identification wristband to the volunteers, and your items will be returned to you. For your safety and the safety of others, all personal bags will be subject to inspection. When checking your gear on race day, you will be given two matching wristbands and a sticker. The wristbands and sticker will have your bus number and individual bag number printed on them. • Attach one wristband to your bag and give your bag to the gear volunteer. • Keep the second wristband and sticker with you. You will need these to help you find your bus and claim your bag at the finish area. • Remember to put some form of identification in your bag in case we need to ship your bag back to you after the race. Be sure to include your name, address, and phone number. Garments without a bag will not be accepted. Once again, no backpacks, suitcases, etc. will be accepted at gear check. Items left unattended at the start line will be handled similarly to how they are addressed by TSA regulations at an airport. At the start All gear check buses will be located on various streets around the start area including Olney Avenue, Old York Road, and Somerville Avenue. No buses will be on Broad Street this year to allow more room for the corrals to be set up. Runners are asked to check their gear early so that the buses can leave on time. When the first buses are loaded they will leave for The Navy Yard. New buses will be opened after the first buses are filled. Please move quickly away from the buses after you load your gear to allow more room for the next group of runners. Please do this in an orderly fashion to help our 200 volunteers do their job. At the finish Gear pickup at The Navy Yard will be located at the south end of the Marine Parade Grounds in the parking lot directly across Constitution Avenue. All gear must be checked onto the buses by 7:30 a.m. Race Program and Information Guide 21 Cheer zones Broad Street will be alive and humming with the excitement of the crowds on May 1.
