Garcia named President of the Year
The State Student Advisory
Council (SSAC) selected Pikes
Peak Community College
President Joseph A. Garcia as
President of the Year.
Garcia received the award at an
SSAC luncheon on Friday, April
15 at the Community College of
Denver, Auraria Campus.
Carrie Riffee, SSAC
representative from PPCC,
nominated Garcia for his
consistent focus on students and
his total commitment to supporting
student success. “He always
makes time for students, no matter
what, and no matter how busy he
is,” says Riffee. “He has a
total open-door policy, and
goes out of his way to help
individual students. He’s an
excellent mentor.”

tirelessly to provide
increased opportunities and
services to PPCC students.
He has implemented
programs to recruit more
minority students and
provide better support
systems to meet their needs.

The Pueblo Hispanic
Education Foundation (PHEF),

will recognize outstanding
educators at the LCC’s April 29,
2005 membership luncheon.
The public is invited to attend

Pikes Peak Theatre is waiting for
Mrs. Colorado
The 2005 Mrs. Colorado United States Pageant is looking
for the next Mrs. Colorado and excited about the upcoming
Mrs. Colorado United States Pageant that will be held June
18 at the Pikes Peak Theatre in Colorado Springs.
Festivities include a welcoming reception at the Briarhurst
Manor Estate, a fall fashion show, swimsuit competition,
evening gown competition, live entertainment, kid’s
performances andthe Peterson AFBHonor Guard.
The only requirements are that a woman is married and is
living with her husband, a citizen of the United States, is of
good moral character and is at least 21 years of age. There is
no talent competition. Even with a full time job and two
young children under the age of five Mandie Litton, Mrs.
Colorado 2004, is able to enjoy all that comes with being
Mrs. Colorado United States.

I wonder when we will see the 5th day of the 5th month of the
5th year fall in place again. Another 100 years if my math is
correct. We’ve come a long way in the last 100 years; I hope
that in the next hundred we can gain as much or more.
However, I’m not sure things will change that much as certain
groups still seem hell-bent on dismantling all that we have
achieved.
Again, we see the so-called Christian Right in a frenzy over
many of our judges. They seem to be trying to dismantle the walls of separation between our
government, the judiciary and their interpretation of religion.
Just before 1905, there was another Christian edict to take over the government. Manifest
Destiny proclaimed that the Anglo Saxons in the eastern states had the divine right and privilege
to rule the United States from sea to sea, because they were the only ones who could selfgovern. Perceived as being incapable of self-government were Native Americans and those of
non-European origin.
Today’s attempts by religious fundamentalists to castigate judges and force Congress to enact
their agenda do not seem to be very different. So often we move forward and then some group
does its best to reverse the clock.
We must continue to be vigilant and Cinco de Mayo is a time to celebrate what we have
achieved, to note where we are losing ground and reflect on what we have left to do.
And for those anglophiles who do not understand the history of our country, Cinco de Mayo is
not a foreign holiday and is not celebrated throughout México, apart from locally in the city of
Puebla. Chicano activists adopted the Cinco de Mayo celebration in the 1970s.
The bottom line of the Cinco story is the coming together of all people for La Causa, for a
cause. The uniting of all, irrespective of race or religious beliefs.
Maybe this Cinco we can help some of our neighbors remember that creed, but I know we’ll
have a tough fight.
You may notice that Mr. Doug Bruce, one of our distinguished El Paso County Commissioners,
did not participate in the El Paso County commemoration of El Cinco de Mayo. He abstained
from voting on the resolution and left before we had time to take a photo. I do not know why he
did not wish to participate, perhaps some of you can inquire.
No matter, it is time to enjoy.
If you are among the lucky ones that have someone that cares for you and about you, count
your blessings and go out and celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

Head Start wins awards for excellence
Community Partnership for
Child Development (CPCD), the
non-profit
agency
that
administers the Head Start
program in El Paso County, will
receive two awards from the
National Head Start Association
(NHSA).
CPCD will receive top honors
for its family literacy services for
Head Start children and their
families. Sponsored by the
National Head Start Association,
the Family Literacy Project
Award recognizes CPCD’s
programs that allow parents to
pursue a high school
equivalency certificate
and/or complete English
language classes while
their children participate
in the Head Start
preschool program or
Early Head Start infant/toddler
program.
CPCD serves approximately 80
families in its family literacy
programs annually. Unique
characteristics of the program
include
extensive
collaboration with local
organizations
and
agencies, including
School Districts 2 and 11
and the El Paso County
Department of Human
Services, and braiding several
sources of federal, state, and
private funding. CPCD will also
be recognized for promoting
volunteerism with local dental
professionals that results in free
or reduced-fee dental services for
uninsured children in El Paso
County. Last year the volunteers
provided dental screenings for
children and oral health
education to their parents,
totaling more than $11,000 worth
of in-kind services for CPCD.
CPCD’s early childhood
programs serve more than 1,500
children birth to age five and
their families to assist children to
start school ready to learn and
succeed and support parents in
their role as their child’s first
teacher. CPCD’s best known
program is Head Start, which
serves approximately 1,000
three-and-four-year-old children
within El Paso County who
reside in low-income families
and children with special needs
and their families.

Memorial spreads the word about safety
Memorial Hospital, in
collaboration with The Safe Kids

almost 50% of all moves taking
place between June 1 and

And it’s around this time of
year that the Better Business
Bureau of Southern Colorado
sees an increase in complaints
against moving companies.
The most common complaints
allege: missed pickup or delivery
dates; charges that exceed the
estimate provided; and disputes
regarding claims for lost or
damaged household goods.
Consumers can avoid these
problems by doing the following:
• Research the company
thoroughly, find out how long
they have been in business and
their track record.
• Obtain written estimates,
preferably three, before you
decide on a company. Don’t take
an estimate over the phone.
• Ask about insurance coverage.
Know the type and extent of
liability coverage that the mover
carries.
Check with your homeowner’s
insurance policy to see what it
covers. Consider purchasing
additional insurance on your
belongings.
• Be careful when packing. Take
the time to do a thorough job.
Always carry valuables and
important documents with you.
• Be there! Be physically present
when the mover both loads and
unloads your belongings to
check that everything has been
packed and arrives in good
condition.

Minors can be victims of identity theft
It’s the fastest growing white
collar crime but identity theft
doesn’t just target adults.
Children and teenagers are
particularly good targets due to
their “unblemished” – “non
existent” credit records and
because the “theft” can go
undetected for months or even
years.
The key to protecting minors
from identity theft is to shield
their personal information and
teach them to guard this
information.
• Schools, athletic teams and
pediatric offices routinely
request children’s Social
Security numbers for registration
purposes. Before giving that
information, always ask: Is this
required? By whom?
• Don’t carry your child’s Social
Security card in your wallet or
purse and do not permit your teen
to do so.
• When your teen applies for his
or her driver’s license, make
certain that they do not permit
their Social Security number to
be used as the driver license
identification number.
• Teach your teen to safeguard
and monitor their banking
account and credit card
information and to only carry on
their person what is necessary.
• Limit the copies of your child’s
birth certificate that you give out.

See the world with YMCA
summer day camps
This summer, the YMCA of
the Pikes Peak Region is taking
a fresh approach to its summer
day camp programs. The new
Destination Exploration day
camp theme will have kids from
age 3 through 16 exploring world
cultures, art, history, science,
diversity and sports from around
the globe.
More than 100 weekly themes
will be offered through summer
at 12 locations. Each camp is
designed to combine learning,
fun and the physical activity that
kids need. Kids can choose from
camps such as Pint-Size Picasso,
Maze Craze, Dinosaur, The “Y”
Factor, Destination Italy,
Horseback Riding, What’s
Cooking, Teen Adventure Camp,
Denver Adventures, Ultimate
Sports Challenge, Hip Hop
Studio, Lacrosse, Soccer, Teen
X-treme Waterslides and
Counselors in Training .
Camps are designed to meet
the needs of each specific age
group. A carefully designed
progression of age-appropriate
activities starts kids as young as
age 3 with half-day camps and
culminates with Counselors In
Training camps which provide
hands on leadership and job skill
training for teens as they assist
with camp programs.
The YMCA of the Pikes Peak
Region also offers chldren a
chance to get away from the city
and explore new activities at
YMCA Camp Shady Brook.
Located in the mountains near
Deckers and surrounded by the
Pike National Forest, the camp
offers boating, horseback riding,
nature study, ropes course,
hiking, campfire program,
leadership development and
other activities for ages 6-17.
Teen travel camps this year
include surf camp in California,
rafting and sea kayaking near
Seattle.
Children from all over the
region have been enjoying the
traditions of Camp Shady Brook
for more than 50 years.
The camp has recently
completed the first phase of
improvements to its facilities
including a water slide; new
archery and air rifle facilities;
and a new dining pavilion. Other
improvements are planned to
accommodate a growing number
of campers.
Summer camps are even more
important today than in the past
because in most cases there is no
one at home to help watch the
kids.
YMCA Camps help parents by
providing childcare during the
summer with an emphasis on fun
and hands-on activities that bring
learning to life in creative new
ways. Financial assistance is
available so that all children can
participate.

Memorial hosts art sale
The Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will host the Great Art Event May 4-5, Wednesday and
Thursday, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in front of the Voluntaire Boutique at Memorial’s main
campus—1400 E. Boulder Street.
The sale will feature a variety of images, styles and artists to suit every room in the home.
Artwork will be price reduced as much as 80 percent, and designer frames and matting are
included. Sale proceeds will be reinvested in Memorial’s varied patient-oriented programs.

El ‘error’ de Schwarzenegger
La semana pasada, el gobernador
de
California,
Arnold
Schwarzenegger, declaró que
Estados Unidos debería cerrar sus
fronteras con México para
combatir
la
inmigración
indocumentada.
Fue tal el impacto que tuvo esa
declaración que un vocero del
Gobernador tuvo que salir al paso
y decir que Schwarzenegger no
quiso decir “cerrar” la frontera, si
no vigilar mejor la línea fronteriza.
El mismo gobernador, un
inmigrante él mismo, dio la cara
argumentando que quizás su error
se debió a su conocimiento del
inglés.
A pesar de la pretendida
corrección, el daño ya estaba
hecho. El presidente de la
Asamblea Estatal de California,
Fabián Núñez, condenó dichas
declaraciones al tiempo que el
gobernador se apresuraba a insistir
que se tiene una excelente relación
comercial con México y que le
“fascina ir de vacaciones” a este
país, lugar en donde filmó cuatro
de sus películas.
Quizá al gobernador de
California le guste ir de vacaciones
a México o filmar películas ahí,
pero lo cierto es que en más de un
año al frente del estado con más
mexicanos residentes en Estados
Unidos no ha buscado realizar una
visita oficial a ese país. Su agenda
ha incluido países tan distantes
como el Japón, pero no a su vecino
próximo.
Este comentario sobre el cierre de
fronteras se da en un momento
muy importante en la política
migratoria en este país. Por ello ha
adquirido la relevancia que ha
acaparado.
La semana pasada, el llamado
Minuteman Project anunciaba el
cese de actividades... por ahora,
debido a la baja en el cruce de
inmigrantes por esa zona. Sin
embargo, advertían que buscarán
extender sus operaciones de
Arizona a California para lanzar
una advertencia a la inmigración
indocumentada.
Cerrar la frontera o ‘cazar’
inmigrantes no es la solución al
problema migratorio. Es necesario
buscar una solución legal que se
adecúe a la realidad migratoria del
país.

where most of the world’s
Catholics live; he neglected to
say any words in Spanish.
“Thanks to all of you, these
historically important ecclesial
events have had worldwide
coverage. I know how hard you
have worked, far away from your
homes and families, for long
hours and in sometimes difficult
conditions,” the new pope said.
“In my own name, and
especially on behalf of Catholics
living far from Rome who were
able to participate in these
stirring moments for our faith as
they were taking place, I thank
you for all you have done,” said
the pontiff, who until a few days
ago was known as Cardinal
Joseph Ratzinger.
Although the
pontiff is said to
have excellent
foreign-language
skills, the absence
of any comments
in
Spanish
perplexed some
in the crowd of
more than 1,000
reporters and
photographers
and
several
hundred pilgrims
and
Vatican
staffers who were
granted access to
a
modern
amphitheater
next to St. Peter’s Basilica.
“For us, it was a mistake,” said
Maria Antonieta Flores, a
journalist with Il Publico in
Guadalajara, Mexico. “We
wanted him to speak in Spanish.”

New focus on federal contracting
The US Small Business
Administration, the Office of
Management and Budget, General
Services Administration and the
Department of Defense has
revamped the Central Contractor
Registration (CCR) database to
give the SBA oversight over the
small business designation process
and to more accurately monitor
contract awards going to small
businesses.
“This upgrade to the CCR
database will improve upon the
accuracy of the federal
government’s reporting of small
business achievements and will
allow the SBA to monitor and
confirm the companies’ small
business status,” said SBA
Administrator Hector V. Barreto.
The enhancement is Phase II
in the merger of the Dynamic
Small Business Search, formerly
known as Pro-Net into the CCR
database. CCR is an online
business portal that assists small
businesses with marketing their
goods and services to the federal
government
and
prime
contractors and helps federal
agencies and prime contractors
seek out small businesses for
contracting opportunities. The
overall effort falls under the
auspices of the Integrated
Acquisition Environment (IAE),
which is one of the E-Gov
initiatives managed by the GSA.
Effective today, small
businesses will no longer be able
to self certify on the CCR database
as a SBA-certified small
disadvantaged business, 8(a)certified business or HUBZonecertified business. Adjustments
will be made to all of the small
businesses’ Trading Partner
Profiles that are entered into the
CCR database. The SBA will now
mark the business fields in the
CCR database to indicate whether (NAICS) code listed. The

Wells Fargo Bank Colorado Springs will attend the April 27 School
District 11 Board of Education meeting to present the school district
with a check in the amount of $12,275. The meeting will take place at
6:30 pm, April 27 at 1115 N El Paso Street.
Wells Fargo & Company will donate $16,435 to five
school districts in the Pikes Peak Region through its Team
Up for Our Schools program, which was created in 2003
to help support public schools during times of significant
budget cuts. Through Team Up, Wells Fargo has donated
a two-year combined total of approximately $303,000
to school districts throughout Colorado, including those
in Colorado Springs, Monument and Woodland Park.
“Wells Fargo is pleased to make a Team Up for Our
Schools donation for the second year to our local school
districts on behalf of our team members, our customers
and the community,” says Sullivan.
“The Team Up for Our Schools program offers a
terrific opportunity to support the success of students by

U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services (USCIS)
announced today that the backlog
has continued to decline for the
processing of immigration benefits
such as work authorization,
permanent residency and
naturalization. In the latest update
issued to Congress, USCIS
reported the backlog, which had
reached a high of 3.8 million cases
in January 2004, was reduced to
1.5 million cases as of September
30, 2004. In all, USCIS has
reduced the backlog by more than
2.3 million cases during fiscal year
2004.
“Today’s announcement
continues the trend of showing
tremendous
progress
in
eliminating our backlog,” said
USCIS Director Eduardo Aguirre.
“However, USCIS will not rest on
past success, but rather use it as a
springboard to overcome the
challenges that lie ahead. We will
continue to realign our workforce
with our workload to ensure that
we meet the six-month cycle time
target at every office for every
form type by the end of fiscal year
2006.”
Highlighting the latest report to
Congress was the record number
of case completions. In all, USCIS
officers completed almost 2.2
million cases during the fourth
quarter while receiving nearly 1.3
million new cases. By completing
900,000 more cases than received,
USCIS accomplished the most
productive quarter in the Agency’s
history.
The report credits much of the
backlog elimination progress to
productivity increases and process
refinements.
USCIS
has
prioritized its pending workload to
ensure that applications filed by
eligible applicants for whom
benefits are immediately available
are handled first. This concept is
highlighted by the current USCIS
practice of deciding Petitions for
Immigration Relatives (I-130s)
closer to the date on which a visa
will become available.
The report also noted a reduction
in cycle times for a number of
services and benefits. For
example, the cycle time for the
Replacement of a Green Card (I90) is now 5.4 months. At the
beginning of fiscal year 2004, the
cycle time for this same service
was 12.7 months.

The USA Basketball Executive
Committee has named Phoenix
Suns Chairman and CEO Jerry
Colangelo to the newly-created
position of Managing Director of
the USA Basketball Senior Men’s
National Team program for the
2005-2008 quadrennium, USA
Basketball President Val
Ackerman announced today at a
press conference in Phoenix, Ariz.
Colangelo will assume
responsibility for the selection of
the USA senior men’s team
coaching staffs and players
through 2008 and will oversee the
teams’ competitive preparations,
including training and exhibition
games.
During the 2005-2008
quadrennium, USA Basketball
men’s senior national teams are
expected to compete in the 2006
FIBA World Championship (Aug.
19-Sept. 3 in Saitama, Japan), if
necessary the 2007 FIBA
Americas Olympic Qualifying
Tournament (dates and site TBD),
and if the USA qualifies the 2008
Olympic Games in Beijing, China
(Aug. 8-24).

The significance of Cinco de Mayo
The Mexican holiday known as
Cinco de Mayo is widely
misconstrued in the USA, even by
people of Mexican descent. Many
people are unaware of the origin
and significance of Cinco de
Mayo, they simply see it as an
opportunity to go out and get
drunk on cheap Mexican beer.
Despite its commercialization, this
holiday is of great importance to
many people.
The biggest misconception
about Cinco de Mayo is that it
commemorates
México’s
Independence Day. México’ s
Independence Day is celebrated on
September 16 and celebrates the
events that took place in 1810 and
lead to independence from Spain.
Cinco de Mayo commemorates
a victory by Mexican troops in La
Batalla de Puebla over an invading
French force on May 5, 1862.
From the time of Mexican
Independence in 1821 to this battle
in 1862, México suffered
numerous setbacks in its attempts
to form a stable republic and
endured several incursions into its
sovereignty.
Fifteen years into its
independence, Texas seceded.
Anglos who had emigrated from
the United States to México led the
Texan revolt.
The revolt
eventually led to the MexicanAmerican War (1846-1848), a war
the US won. México was forced
to surrender approximately half of
its territory to the United States.
After the war and the secession
of Texas, México underwent a
severe economic crisis during the
1850s. In 1861, President Benito
Juárez halted payments on
Mexican foreign debt, much of it
owed to France. Shortly
thereafter, France sent troops to
México to secure payment of its
debt.
At the time, the French Army of
Napoleon III was considered the
most powerful army in the world
and had enjoyed victories
throughout Europe and Asia. The
French expected to march from the
port city of Veracruz to Mexico
City without encountering
resistance.
Juárez sent troops under the
command of General Ignacio
Zaragosa to Puebla to confront the
French. The Mexican force of
4,700 consisted almost entirely of
indigenous soldiers who were
severely under-equipped. The
French numbered 5,200.
La Batalla de Puebla raged for
two hours after which the French
were forced to retreat to Orizaba.
Despite the tremendous odds, the
Mexican Army defeated the most
powerful fighting unit in the
world.
One year after La Batalla de
Puebla, the French brought in
more troops and re-attacked. This
time they made their way to
Mexico City, took the capital, and
installed Emperor Maximilian of
Hapsburg as the reigning monarch
of México. Maximilian ruled
México for approximately four
years, until his execution in 1867
by troops loyal to President Juárez,
who regained power.
Although La Batalla de Puebla
on Cinco de Mayo was rendered
militarily insignificant by France’s
subsequent victory, it did inject the
Mexican people with pride and
patriotism never before enjoyed.
La Batalla de Puebla was the
first time that the Mexican pueblo
could rally around a common
cause and proudly proclaim, “¡Yo
soy Mexicano!”
Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated
in México to the same extent that
it is by Chicanos in the US, mainly
because 16 de septiembre is seen
as the more important holiday.
The reason that Chicanos celebrate
the holiday is that they appreciate
its cultural significance — victory
in the face of great odds and the
patriotism it generated — more
that its historical relevance.
Perhaps as importantly, General
Ignacio Zaragosa, the leader at La
Batalla de Puebla was born in
Texas while it was still part of
México. He is considered by
many to be the first Chicano hero.
Some scholars believe that if the
French had defeated México at
Puebla, France would have aided
the southern states in the American
Civil War to free southern ports
blockaded by the Union. At this
time, Confederate General Robert
E. Lee was enjoying success and
French intervention could have
influenced the Civil War. Even
those who are not of Mexican
descent have an indirect reason to
celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
Whatever the reason you
celebrate it is important to realize
that this holiday does have
historical and cultural significance
to millions.
So, have fun, but don’t forget
that el Cinco de Mayo remembers
a time when a people had nothing
but hope, fortitude and courage.

celebran el 5 de mayo,
especialmente en los estados de
Colorado, Nuevo México,
Arizona, California, y Texas.
Los habitantes de estos
estados
tuvieron
una
participación muy importante y

En 1858, Benito Juárez fue
elegido Presidente de los Estados
Unidos Mexicanos para defender
la Constitución establecida el 5
de febrero de 1857. Después de
varias luchas internas, Juárez fue
reelecto en 1861. Debido a la
inestabilidad financiera, causada
por la guerra mexicanoamericana, el Congreso
Mexicano acordó suspender los
pagos de la deuda exterior
durante dos años.
Los acreedores en Europa
(Inglaterra, España y Francia)
decidieron que la intervención
sería la mejor manera de cobrarse
la deuda. Francia tenía su propia
agenda, la cual era desconocida
por Inglaterra y España.
Napoleón III, Emperador del
Segundo Imperio Francés quería
establecer una monarquía
favorable para Francia, y
asimismo, quería disolver el
Gobierno
Constitucional
Mexicano. Sus planes de
grandiosidad consistían en
extender esta monarquía hasta
Centro y Sudamérica para
proveer de materia prima y
comercio a Europa y al mismo
tiempo estar cerca de la
República de los Estados Unidos
la cual crecía en poder después
de anexar California, Nuevo
México y Arizona.
Los designios descabellados de
Francia fueron fomentados y
confabulados
por
los
terratenientes plutocráticos y los
conservadores de México que
temían perder su poderío y sus
tierras al nuevo gobierno
constitucional del Presidente
Juárez. El 8 de diciembre de
1861, los poderes europeos
desembarcaron en el Puerto de
Veracruz y lo ocuparon, siendo
España la primera en llegar. Para
el 11 de abril de 1862 España e
Inglaterra se enteraron de las
intenciones de Francia y
abandonaron
su
apoyo
embarcándose hacia Europa.
Mientras tanto, en la ciudad de
México, el Presidente Juárez
(indio zapoteca que se había
licenciado como abogado y había
estudiado para el sacerdocio)
tomaba
medidas
para
contrarrestar la invasión: “El
gobierno de la República...en
vista de la declaración de los
plenipotenciarios franceses, no
puede ni debe hacer otra cosa que
rechazar la fuerza con la fuerza
y defender a la nación de la
agresión injusta con la que se la
amenaza. ...Tengamos fe en la
justicia de nuestra causa...
haciendo triunfar no sólo a
nuestra patria, sino a los
principios de respeto y de
inviolabilidad de la soberanía de
las naciones” (1). El Presidente
Juárez declaró la ley marcial en
todas las áreas ocupadas por los
franceses en estado de sitio.
Cuando llegaron las tropas de
refuerzo francesas, el ejército se
componía de (7.000) siete mil
soldados que salieron en la ruta
de (225) doscientas veinticinco
millas hacia la ciudad de México
a principios de abril con la ilusión
de que los mexicanos les darían
la bienvenida. Esta ilusión fue
nutrida por Juan N. Almonte, un
reaccionario mexicano, y por el
Conde Dubois de Saligny, el
embajador francés, nombrado
por Napoleón. El Presidente
Juárez le dio la orden al General
Ignacio Zaragoza de detener el
avance de las fuerzas armadas
francesas en los fuertes de Loreto
y Guadalupe cerca de la ciudad
de Puebla. Zaragoza contaba con
sólo (2,000) dos mil hombres.
El 5 de mayo de 1862, los
cañones resonaron y los rifles
dispararon y más de (1,000) mil
soldados franceses cayeron
muertos. Los mexicanos habían
ganado la batalla, pero no la
guerra.

May 5 marks the Mexican
army’s victory over the French
invaders at the Battle of Puebla
in 1862. In the United States, the
celebration of this battle has
come to be known simply as the
Cinco de Mayo.
Along with Mexican
Independence Day on September
16, Cinco de Mayo is a time to
celebrate Mexican and Chicano
heritage and culture.
Cinco
de
Mayo
organizó la administración del
gobierno, liberó a los indios de
la esclavitud, y desarrolló los
recursos naturales del país, no
pudo evitar la oposición de los
patriotas mexicanos. Los
republicanos, al mando de Benito
Juárez, no aceptaron la
intervención extranjera. Se
refugiaron en el norte del país y
les pidieron ayuda a los
californianos y a otras sociedades
mexicano-norteamericanas con
financiamiento y voluntarios
para la lucha.
Finalmente, Maximiliano fue
derrotado y capturado el 15 de
mayo de 1867; fue juzgado por
una corte marcial y ejecutado por
una escuadra de fusilamiento el
19 de junio en el Cerro de las
Campanas con sus generales
Miguel Miramón y Tomás Mejía.
El 5 de mayo es una fiesta
nacional mexicana. El campo de
batalla es ahora un parque en
Puebla con la estatua del General
Zaragoza montado a caballo.
Uno de los fuertes es ahora un
museo de historia que describe a
escala con soldados de juguete lo
ocurrido durante la Batalla de
Puebla. Pero es en los Estados
Unidos de América donde se
celebra de una forma más festiva
con desfiles, música, bailes
folclóricos y comida. Estas
festividades son para recaudar
fondos para obras benéficas y
como demostración de la
solidaridad que existe entre los
mexicano-norteamericanos.

fueron quienes hicieron este
trabajo de investigación histórica
como proyecto de grupo.

Bad Habitz celebrate Cinco de Mayo
The Cinco de Mayo holiday celebration
is coming early and in a musical-rocking way
this year to Pueblo Community College.
On Friday, April 29, Bad Habitz will
perform its special brand of music in a live
concert that will take place from 8 pm to
midnight in PCC’s Fortino Ballroom.
The evening will include a Salsa dance
contest. Bad Habitz’s repertoire includes an
eclectic blend of Tejano, Cumbia, Funk and
Oldies music.
They perform regularly throughout
southern Colorado. Admission will be $5
and there will be a cash bar.
Those attending must be at least 21 years
old. For tickets or more information, call

Dinner and Dance will be held

Mayo, the 5th of May,

Industria de turismo reconoce a Hispanos como mercado rentable
La revista Hispanic Meetings
& Travel (HM&T) fue lanzada
para informar y educar a la
comunidad hispana sobre la
actividad en la industria de viajes
y turismo. Angela Gonzalez
Rowe, Editora Asociada y
Editora en Jefe, afirmó que: “A
medida que el poder adquisitivo
combinado de los hispanos en
EE.UU. comenzó a mostrar un
increíble crecimiento, también
aumentaron las posibilidades
para que los empresarios
hispanos capitalizaran esta
floreciente tendencia de mercado
... vimos la necesidad de
representar al mercado hispano
en la industria y nos
aventuramos”.
El informe “Minority Traveler
Report” (Informe de viajeros de
grupos minoritarios) de la
Asociación de la Industria de
Viajes en Estados Unidos de
América (TIA) en 2003 confirmó
que el viajero hispano
verdaderamente constituye un
segmento de mercado rentable.
Suzanne Cook, Vicepresidente

observó que “los hispanoestadounidenses
ahora
representan el grupo minoritario
más grande de EE.UU. y generan
el mayor volumen de viajes. Los
viajes

crowned the 2005 Fiesta Queen
at the Fiesta Queen Pageant held
at the Colorado State Fair Events
Center on Saturday April 23,
2005.
Chosen from a pool of eight
talented Hispanic women,
Devereaux came out on top of a
closely fought competition.
Felicia Sanchez, 22 and Meghan
Wright, 18 were first and second
runners up respectively.
Devereaux is an 18-year old
from San Luis who attends the
University of Denver. A Martin
Luther King Scholar, she is a
focused student and community
player acting as Director for
Mariachi de los Artes, a volunteer
at Pioneer Charter School and the
Mayordomo (caretaker) at San
Pablo Church.
She has also volunteered for
Habitat for Humanity in Lima,
Peru.
Devereaux has a bright,
vibrant personality that
engenders a wonderful sense of
enthusiasm. She inherits her
crown from the 2004 Fiesta
Queen Melissa Garduno.

Si una cena alimenticia y nutritiva para toda la familia es lo que siempre quiere preparar,
entonces no es la única en el tema.
Las estadísticas muestran que estamos más determinados que nunca en obtener los beneficios
nutritivos de una comida echa con ingredientes nutritivos y frescos.
En realidad el único problema es logístico. Con los días tan apresurados y llenos de actividades,
a veces es difícil encontrar tiempo para incluir estás comidas en nuestra vida.
La solución muchas veces está en cocinar platillos nutritivos que faciliten la preparación como
puede ser en un guisado completo. Al preparar la comida de esta manera, seguirá manteniendo su
buena reputación y todo en 30 minutos, o menos.
El maíz súper dulce es una de las verduras que a todo el mundo le gusta que sea parte de estos
platillos completos. Poco a poco la gente se ha acostumbrado a que la temporada de esta variedad
no solo sea durante el verano sino todo el año, lo que permite contar con ella para prepararlos en
guisados en cualquier momento.
Además, este maíz se cose increíblemente rápido. Le puede cortar los granos, pero es mas
rápido si lo prepara entero, o en pedazos, solo golpeé la mazorca con el filo de un cuchillo para
cortarla.
El maíz súper dulce es vendido casi siempre bajo la cáscara, sin embargo algunos supermercados
se toman el tiempo de pelarlos.

Preparación: 5 minutos Cocinar: 25 minutos
1 cuchara de aceite vegetal
1 cebolla mediana, picada (aproximadamente 1 taza)
1 libra de pollo molido
2 latas (14-1/2 onzas cada una) de tomates picados con
jalapeños
2 cucharitas de comino molido
1 cucharita de chile molido
1/4 de cucharita de sal
4 piezas de maíz súper dulce fresco, cortado
En una hoya grande,
calentar el aceite sobre
fuego mediano alto.
Agregar la cebolla, cocinar
moviendo hasta que este suave, aproximadamente 5 minutos.
Agregar el pollo, cocinar moviendo hasta dorar, aproximadamente
10 minutos. Mezclando, agregar los tomates, el comino, el chile y la
sal; hervir. Agregar el maíz, cubrir y cocinar durante 3 minutos. Voltear
el maíz, cubrir y cocinar hasta que este caliente, 2 a 3 minutos mas.
Servir con arroz si desea. Rinde: 4 Porciones

doradas. Agregarle huevos
revueltos sazonados con sal y
pimienta. Cocinar hasta que los
huevos estén listos.
• Maíz y Camarones Fritos:
Freír rebanadas de maíz, cuñas
de col, y cebollitas picadas en
aceite vegetal. Agregar los
camarones en su cáscara y
cocinar hasta que estén rozados.
Sazonar al gusto con salsa
preparada de frasco estilo
asiatica.
• Jamón Glaseado con Mostaza
y Maíz: Untar una rebanada
gruesa de jamón y varios piezas
de maíz con una mezcla de una
parte de mostaza Dijon y dos de
cidra de manzana. Cocinar a
350º F en el horno hasta que este
caliente y la superficie un poco
glaseada, aproximadamente 10
minutos.
• Guisado de Almejas o
Mejillones con Maíz: En una
hoya grande, poner capas de
almejas o mejillones frescos.
Sazonar con condimento para
mariscos.
Agregar capas de cebolla
finamente rebanada y rebanadas
de maíz, sazonar cada capa.
Repetir las capas.
Agregar media taza de vino
blanco o agua sobre las capas.

Avocado jazzes up plain Jane dinners
(NAPSA) It’s a snap to make an ordinary quick dinner extraordinary. The trick? Give old standards a flavor boost with ingredients like luscious avocados from Mexico,
a handful of chopped cilantro and a zippy dressing. With a lovely golden green color and velvety-smooth texture, nutrient-dense avocados brighten the look of any dish
while adding divine taste.
For example, toss cubes of buttery avocado from Mexico with already-cooked chicken and bottled salad dressing and serve over a rice and black bean salad with lettuce
and tomato. It’s delicious, satisfying and no work! Other ways to easily and quickly transform a plain Jane dish into something special: Wrap scrambled eggs, shredded
Cheddar cheese and slices of avocado in flour tortillas and serve with bottled salsa; scatter a mix of avocado cubes, sliced scallions and black olives tossed with hot sauce
over plain cheese pizza or top a burger with a slice of pepper Jack cheese, dollop of BBQ sauce and slices of avocado from Mexico.
Chicken and avocados over rice salad
3 cups cooked rice
1 can (19-ounce) black beans, drained and rinsed
1 cup chopped fresh tomato
1 cup shredded lettuce
1/4 cup chopped cilantro
1/2 cup prepared oil and vinegar salad dressing, divided
2 cups shredded cooked chicken
2 fully ripened avocados from Mexico, halved, pitted, peeled
and cut in 1-inch cubes
Express dinner:
Creamy sliced avocado from Mexico, bottled
vinaigrette
and cilantro transform cooked chicken and rice
into a main dish salad that’s destined to become
a family favorite.
In a large bowl, combine rice, beans, tomato, lettuce, cilantro and half of the salad dressing; toss. Spoon on a platter lined with lettuce, if desired. In the same bowl,
combine chicken, avocados and remaining dressing. Spoon over rice salad. Makes six portions.

Tortillas
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 teaspoons Tabasco brand pepper sauce
6 corn tortillas
Salad
1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
1 tablespoon fresh-squeezed lime juice
1 tablespoon Tabasco green pepper sauce
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon oregano leaves
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups shredded romaine lettuce leaves
2 medium tomatoes, chopped
1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
3 large green onions, thinly sliced
Prepare Tortillas: Preheat oven to 350˚F. Combine olive oil and Tabasco sauce in cup. Brush
mixture on one side of tortillas; place on cookie sheet. Bake 10 minutes or until tortillas are
golden.
Prepare Salad: Combine black beans, lime juice, Tabasco sauce, cumin, oregano and salt in
medium bowl. Place one tortilla on plate. Top with 1/6 of bean mixture, lettuce, tomatoes, feta
cheese and green onions. Repeat with remaining tortillas and salad mixture. Makes 6 servings.

This year’s Cinco de Mayo
Run will be held Sunday, May
1st at the Colorado State Fair
grounds. The race will begin at
7:30 a.m. There will be a 10k,
5k, 1.5-mile fun walk, and 1.5
mile fun run for children 12 and
under. Prizes will be awarded for
the 10k and 5k run for the top 3
runners in each age division. Age
divisions are 19 and under, 2029, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69,
and 70 and over. Male and
female categories will also be
recognized.
Each finisher will receive a
ribbon (fun walk/12 under run
only), t-shirt and a goodie bag.
Cost of the race is 10K/5K before
April 22 $17.00 (SCR members
and 60+ $ 15.00).

Important and profound theater

and Performing Arts Department
of UCCS, the Theatre ‘d Art will
present the chaos of two plays
beginning May 6 and continuing
thru May 15.
The New Plan will run four
performances only. Friday, May
6; Saturday, May 14; and
Sunday, May 15 at 8 pm. There
will be a matinee Saturday May
7 at 2 pm.
Ubu Rex will also be
performed four times with
evening performances Saturday,

This year’s productions of Ubu
Rex and The New Plan will mark
the second foray into Colorado
Spring’s wide and wacky world
of theater for the fine
organization known as the
Theatre ‘d Art. Last year, the
Theatre ‘d Art, also in
conjunction with UCCS,
presented Purple Skies Over
Vietnam and Ogres in the Office,
two mostly original plays that
took the theater-going populous
by storm. These two plays razed
the limits of traditional theater by
sporting theatre high-jacking
terroristas, multiple surprise
endings, and enough corn made
out of construction paper to
drown three samurai stage
managers. This year, theatrical
chaos and cardboard props will
once again reign supreme Ubu
Rex and The New Plan stand to
shatter yet more standards of the
stage. Gone are the days when
the actors know the full script.
Done are the times, when male
roles are given to… males.
Ubu Rex, written by the great
Alfred Jarry, is the fantastically
obscene story of Pa and Ma Ubu
who, with the help of their many
Phallodins, conquer Poland, steal
a heap of money, and murder a
gob of peasants and Russians.
However, director Jon Margheim
has re-interpreted this timehonored tale of love and
sacrifice, and inserted a few pink
flamingoes, a whole mess of
puppets, and a cross-dressing
cast. Pa Ubu will be played by
the irrepressible Tammy Smith
and his/ her wife Ma Ubu, will
be played by Doug Chartier.
Never has the Osborne Studio
Theater seen so much duct-tape
and cardboard. Never has a giant
man-eating bear so aptly tortured
a PBR encrusted Phallodin.
The New Plan is a new play,
written and directed by Brian
Mann, who is also responsible
for last year’s Ogres in the Office,
and at least some of Purple Skies
Over Vietnam. The New Plan
appears at first to be the story of
a typical hard-boiled private
investigator, hotly embroiled in
heated arguments with his hot
secretary about whether or not he
should get up off his cold rear-
end and throw himself into the
flames of yet another blazingly
ridiculous missing husband case.
Then all hell breaks loose and
flaming hotdogs, mountain men
and a few thousand telephones
have their way with him… or is
it even him? He doesn’t even
know any more, and he probably
shouldn’t care. The eternal
questions of identity, guns, love,
cigarettes, and the general
unpredictability of life and
theater will be met with fierce
resistance in The New Plan.
Though almost entirely
comprised of students, Theatre ‘d
Art promises to put on quite a
show. Admission is free, but
donations are accepted. Seating

Peak Vista to establish Fountain clinic
Peak Vista Community Health
Centers is due to receive one of the
105 New Access Point grants of a
$63 million Health and Human
Services allocation to expand
healthcare services to more lowincome, uninsured Americans.
Peak Vista will use the funding to
establish a health clinic in
Fountain, effective 2006.
“This is wonderful news for the
citizens of Fountain.
Peak Vista continues to be an
outstanding partner and we look
forward to working with their staff
to expand services now being
offered through the Lorraine
Center,” said Ken Barela, Fountain
Mayor.
Dr. Larry Wolk of Rocky
Mountain Youth Services shares
the same sentiments.
“Peak Vista has a great
reputation and has been providing
quality healthcare to those with
access barriers since 1971. I can
think of no better marriage.”
Fountain School District officials
have also been involved in
discussions on the expansion of
healthcare services for its students.
Nationwide, these grants help
an estimated 632,000 Americans,
including many without health
insurance, to obtain primary health
care services, according to Peak
Vista.
The grant continues a five-year
initiative to help communities
across the country create or expand
access to comprehensive primary
health care services.
Launched in 2002, Peak Vista
projects that the initiative will add
1,200 new and expanded health
center sites and increase the
number of people served annually
from about 10 million to 16

West Coast loads the Chevy HHR with attitude
“There is no limit to what we can
do” is the mantra of West Coast
Customs (WCC), known for creating
some of the tastiest rides rollin’ and
stars of MTV’s “Pimp My Ride.”
And while Chevrolet had barely
introduced the production model of
the new 2006 HHR at the 2005
Greater Los Angeles Auto Show, it
was joined on stage by a WCC
concept version with all of its
pimpin’ magic. The WCC HHR
represents a radical vision of the new
Chevy HHR.
The production HHR has a distinct
design that fuses elements of the
1949 Chevy Suburban – the original
utility vehicle – and the SSR
roadster. It is built on the same solid
platform as the new Chevy Cobalt.
The HHR will be available in the
second half of 2005.
“We are lucky to work on all kinds
of cool rides, and add the WCC touch
in a variety of ways,” said Ryan
Friedlinghaus, owner operator and
head guru of WCC. “The HHR is one
of those vehicles that allows you to
customize it mild or wild.”
And customize wild they did. The
WCC gang took a full-on deep dive
into customizing this concept
vehicle, and significantly modified
both the exterior and interior to draw
attention to the new HHR.
One of the fantastic styling cues is
the chopped top — three inches to
be exact. Shaved door handles all
around, huge sunroof, custom rear
roll-pan with center-mounted
exhaust and all-new front fascia are
just a few tweaks to the WCC HHR.
The custom package is covered in a
special House of Color silver/blue
pearl coat with mica-finish that gives
the distinct look of fiber optic
speckles.
“WCC and GM Design worked on
giving the WCC concept HHR an
outrageously different attitude and
the front and rear really deliver on
the WCC flare,” said Clay Dean,
Director of Design for Small/
Midsize Cars. “There are so many
styling possibilities on how this
vehicle can be personalized.
This WCC vision may be over the top, but it demonstrates the creativity HHR offers to personalize it your way.”
To complement the modified styling cues, WCC gave the concept HHR some suspension flexibility with a rear air bag suspension. Large
20” Giovanna wheels wrapped in Pirelli tires hide large 12” Stainless Steel Brake Corporation brakes.
WCC has converted the five-passenger HHR into a ride with leather-trimmed bucket seats to accommodate the four lucky occupants.
Suede, two-tone leather and body color matching interior trim

A 10” monitor molded in the dash with a touch computer screen
controls all of the necessary functions including audio and video
controls. A molded center console runs from the front to the rear
and houses four, seven-inch monitors molded into a rear custom
subwoofer enclosure.

showcases some of the latest audio equipment by WCC and Orion
audio, including two, 10-inch WCC Orion subwoofers surrounding

Civic Hybrid delivers economy and near zero emissions
The Honda Civic Hybrid, the
first mainstream gasoline-electric
hybrid vehicle sold in North
America, enters its third year on
the market as a fuel economy,
emissions
and
advanced
technology leader. Honda led all
other automakers in consumer
registrations of hybrid vehicles in
calendar year 2003 with 23,048
Civic and Insight hybrid vehicle
registrations combined, according
to registration data released by
R.L. Polk & Company.
The Civic Hybrid alone
accounted for half of all hybrid
vehicles registrations in 2003.
According to R.L. Polk data,
national
hybrid
vehicle
registrations rose 25.8 percent in
2003 versus 2002, while Honda
Civic registrations doubled.
The Civic Hybrid’s amazing fuel
economy remains unchanged for
the 2005 model year. The Hybrid
CVT ULEV has earned an EPA
city/highway rating of 48/47 mpg.
By the same measure, the 5-speed
manual achieves a city/highway
rating of 46/51 mpg. Both models
have a range of more than 600
miles. Civic models sold in
California and certain northeastern
states qualify at Advanced
Technology
Partial
Zero
Emissions (AT-PZEV) vehicles.
The Civic Hybrid uses Honda’s
Integrated Motor Assist (IMA)
technology, employing a 1.3-liter
i-DSI 4-cylinder gasoline engine
coupled with a high output electric
motor to provide excellent
performance and fuel efficiency.
The system’s compact nickelmetal hydride battery module is
automatically recharged during
braking and deceleration.
The hybrid system provides up to
93 horsepower and 116 lb-ft of
torque with the electric motor
“assist.” Fuel economy is
improved by up to 30 percent
compared to other Civic sedans.
All this is achieved by the hybrid
powertrain while still meeting the
stringent AT-PZEV standard.
The Civic Hybrid comes
equipped with a long list of
standard features including power
windows, door locks and mirrors;
cruise control; Immobilizer antitheft device; dual stage, dualthreshold driver and front
passenger air bags; and a tilt
steering wheel. For 2005, the Civic
Hybrid adds a new exterior color:
Eternal Blue Pearl.
Honda was the first automaker
to introduce gas-electric hybrid
technology
to
American
consumers when it launched the
Honda Insight in December 1999,
followed by the Civic Hybrid in
March 2002. Together, the Insight
and Civic Hybrid captured four of
the top five slots in the 2004 EPA
fuel economy ratings. The 2005
Honda Insight has earned the
highest EPA fuel economy rating
for any passenger car for the fifth
consecutive year.
The EPA rates the Honda Insight
city/highway fuel economy at 60/
66 mpg and the Civic Hybrid city/
highway fuel economy at 46/51
mpg (manual transmission
models).
