Z ONTAGRAM V OLUME 37, I SSUE 4 N OVEMBER 2015 F ROM THE P RESIDENT ─P RIS T RUESDELL It is finally feeling like fall here in south Texas. Early mornings are in the low 60s. Perfect weather for walking! However, we have had a few rainy days as well. Rain is always welcome. The Zonta conference in October was great fun as always. I have a few pictures included here in the newsletter. The odd year conference is when we elect district officers for the next biennium. Officers elected were: Governor-Barbara Yoder (Johnson County), Lt Governor-Sheryl Flanagin (Fort Smith), Treasurer-Marianne Seal (West Hidalgo County), Area 1 DirectorBarby Crabtree (Dallas), Area 2 Director-Carole Moffatt (Houston), Area 3 Director-Deitrah Davis (West Hidalgo County), and Nominating Committee: Judy Kautz (Central Oklahoma), Carol Collett (USA-2), and Frankie Hohenberger (Fredericksburg). Appointed positions filled are Secretary-Kathy Yates (Lafayette), and Parliamentarian-Shelly Baumgartner (Austin). Zonta International President Maria Jose Landeira Oestergaard (Denmark) attended as the ZI representative and to install the new officers. Maria Jose has a great sense of humor and told a couple of jokes when there delays due to technical difficulties. We are always pleased with ourselves when District 10 is reported in the top 10 list of givers to the Zonta International Foundation. This year our clubs pledged to contribute over $64,000 to ZIF. Many clubs brought their checks with them. In addition, over $12,000 was received from the live auction of items donated by members. So many items were donated this year, that many were held over to be raffled at our area meetings in the spring. Additionally, we raised over $4,000 for our D10 Foundation through Dollars for Scholars, individual donations and our Past Governors' 50/50 raffle. Way to give, District 10! Please join us for our monthly meeting on November 18. Joining us will be Governor Judy Kautz, Area 3 Director Shelly Baumgartner, and our JMK scholarship winner, Roxan Gonzalez. Governor Judy will present the certificate and check from Zonta International, if it has been received. The dates, November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and December 10th (Human Rights Day), were chosen to emphasize the links between ending genderbased violence and human rights values and highlight that gender-based violence is an international human rights violation. Participation in the Campaign has seen over 5,478 organizations, policymakers, governments, UN agencies and countless individuals from over 180 countries worldwide. Together we have brought attention to issues of racism, sexism, cultures of violence, homophobia and called for the implementation of human rights obligations, including the right to health and reproductive rights, and end to militarism and gender-based violence, among others. The strength and longevity of the Campaign is due to these thousands of participants like you. The theme for this year is: “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Make Education Safe for All!” This year, the 16 Days Campaign will focus specifically on the relationship between militarism and the right to education in situations of violent conflict, in relative peace, and variety of education settings, while continuing to make the links with militarism, as an encompassing patriarchal system of discrimination and inequality based on our relationships to power. Education is a public good and fundamental human right recognized in Article 26 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and upheld in various international and regional human rights conventions and treaties. Nonetheless, the right to education is subject to political, economic, and social shifts and upheavals, leaving certain groups (especially women, girls, people with disabilities, LGBTQI people, migrants, and indigenous people) particularly vulnerable and liable to being denied this crucial right.
