When 15-year old Letitia Humphreys-Hyatt was in need of a
mount for the competitive Prelude Hunter-Jumper circuit last year,
JAX Maple Sugar was suggested.
Taken from her pasture setting, this 10-year old mare quickly
bonded with her exceptionally talented young rider. Together they
excelled in the open 2’9” Hunter Division, winning the coveted Prelude Year End
Reserve Championship. In addition, they
claimed two championships in the CMHA
Awards Program.
A malignant tumor brought Sugar’s new career to a tragic halt. But like a true champion, she leaves us with the most remarkable
memories and inspiration.

Administrator’s Missive
President’s Message
As we dig out from under record amounts
of snow here in Atlantic Canada, I am sure I
am not alone when I say, “Spring will arrive
someday!”
As you read through and enjoy the photos
of the Award winners, remember if you own
a Morgan, there is probably an Award system for you. If you are
not already enrolled in a program, contact Nancy at the office
and she will be glad to help you out and assist in getting your
Morgan registered in a program. Remember you do not have to
show your Morgan to qualify for the Versatility Award system.
The Awards system is generally on the Agenda for each of
our monthly conference calls. The CMHA Board is trying to
create a National system that works best for the entire country
as a whole, while keeping in mind the wishes of the various
regions. This spring, as in previous years, the entire Awards
system will be reviewed once again during our Board meeting. Please monitor the website and watch for e-news to stay
informed of any changes that will be in place for the 2015 year.
Registry is the other topic that is regularly discussed during our meetings. I cannot express enough how important it
is to be informed and get proper documentation when buying or leasing your Morgan. Remember “Buyer Beware.” The
CMHA cannot order parties to follow the rules of the registry;
we, with the assistance of the CLRC, can only inform people
of what is required in order to comply with the rules. Unfortunately, not all rules are followed and there are a number of
horses out there eligible to be a registered Morgan. If you have
any ideas on what the CMHA can do to encourage all breeders
to register all their “Morgans,” feel free to share your idea with
your zone director or myself. If we all work together, we can
improve the level of compliance with the registry and reduce
the current number of outstanding registry issues.
I am looking forward to the Board meetings and the CMHA
AGM being held in Kamloops, British Columbia on March 28.
I am sure it will mark the beginning of another great year for
the CMHA.

coming into your mailbox! We don’t want you to miss a thing!
The 2014 Awards have been produced, given
out to the winners, or shipped directly to the recipient. If you are expecting an award and you
haven’t received it, please contact either your
zone director or the CMHA office to track it
down. Congratulations to our winners and thank
you to everyone who submitted their points to all
three of our high point systems. I love seeing how active you are
with your Morgans!
If you are new to the CMHA and would like more information
on the show high point, the trail high point, or the versatility high
point, you can contact me in the office or check out the website
www.morganhorse.ca
For our Morgan horse history
lovers, I need to bring to your attention our Registry Volumes.
Four books have been printed
with all of the Morgans registered up to #14102. Volumes
2-4 contain photos of Morgans
and Volume 4 also contains
registered prefixes. It is a must
for those who like to research
their bloodlines and not use a
computer! The books are hardbound and a treasure that will
last a lifetime. If you would like
to purchase copies, please send
your order to the CMHA office.

Editor’s Input
There maybe a 7’ high snowback beside my
barn after my neighbour got spring fever yesterday
and tidied up all of the neighbourhood driveways,
and we may have had the coldest February on record. But the longer days and occasional southern
breeze are carrying enough promise that I can see a spring melt
and tulip season will be starting before I get to my “pre-spring”
cleaning. And it will be a wonderful thing to see!
Every issue of the magazine is a waiting-game, waiting to see
who will support our costs with ads, and what articles will be sent
in for clubs and Morgan achievements. For now, this issue wins
in what has come from waiting. We have a variety of articles that
will remind you of what makes this such a wonderful breed to be
a part of. While the full-page ads may be in short supply this time,
the “Stone Soup” story comes to mind, as many members added
their part to the mix with a feast of paid photos in the Awards article and the continuation of the Stallion Section. Thanks to each
of you! You have a lasting memory of your 2014 achievements
this way, and have played a part in supporting the magazine.
As I was compiling this issue, and looking at all of the venues
our Morgans are seen in thanks to the Awards Program entries,
it got me thinking about how challenging it can be in today’s
horse industry to connect new owners and first-time buyers to the
horses and horse knowledge that exists in the Morgan world. In
one of those “Eureka!” moments, it occured to me that instead of
an annual For Sale issue or Pleasure horse issue, we might break
some revolutionary new ground by instigating a “New Owners”
issue. As I have dedicated two pages to describing this further
in this issue, I won’t be repetitive here. But I do encourage each
of you to look at this as an opportunity to help open the door to
bringing new owners into the breed.
Once compiled, this new issue, coming out this summer, will
be one of your favourite and most referred to issues in years. From
masses of photos, to stories of your personal Morgan experiences,
to promoting your breeding, training and lesson programs, I am
urging you to help make this happen. The resulting pages will
be distributed through tack shops, feed stores, at events like the
Calgary Stampede and Challenge of the breeds, and, perhaps, the
2014 Pan Am Games taking place in Ontario, Canada in July.
Spare copies will be available for you to give to horse-crazy kids,
adults looking for their new empty-nest activities, and anyone
who is need of being bit by the Morgan bug. But it has to happen
with a group effort, and each little Morgan stone you can send me
will simmer into an issue you’ll be proud to play a part in.
So dip into your memories and files before mud season is finally upon us, and help me to get a head start on making something memorable. Every little bit will add to the flavor!

Morgan World News
SHELBURNE, VT—Lots of Morgan fun and excitement took
place at the 2015 American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA)
Awards Gala and Convention. This annual gathering of Morgan
members and enthusiasts took place February 27-28 in Minneapolis.
Some of the highlights of the two-day event included a farm
visit to local Morgan farms; Hardwood Creek and Arcola Farm.
Popular seminars included guest speaker, Patti Colbert, who
spoke on generational marketing, a panel discussion on connecting with the Amish community, and world renowned photographer, Scott Trees, presenting a visual chronical of his lifetime
experience with horses.
Equine Photographer Howard Schatzberg was a guest speaker
at the Awards Luncheon, and talked about his 30 years of photography at the Morgan Grand National.
More than $55,000 was earned at the annual AMHA/World
Morgan Futurity Stallion Service Auction. The overall top-winning bid went to Dragonsmeade Axios for $5,100. Net income
following expenses from this auction will be distributed to the
AMHA Marketing Program, World Morgan Futurity, AMHA regional shows, the AMHA Show Grant Program, and for marketing and promoting the breed.
Longtime Morgan supporters were recognized before the
Morgan community on Saturday, February 28 for their dedication to the breed at the annual Awards Gala. CMHA Director Tina

The Equine Foundation of Canada has just completed another
year, with two gifts being made to the Canadian horse industry,
and many dozens of horse enthusiasts across the country becoming aware of its benefits to their horses.
One gift went to support an educational clinic on being a horse
owner in Ontario and the other went to the University of Calgary
to finance a study on keeping horses.
But the real big news is the huge increase in Memorial Donations over that of previous years.
The EFC was named the “Charity of Choice” by the families
of loved ones who had passed away, in particular two in Alberta.
This was noted in the newspaper obituaries and also the bulletins
given out at the funeral service, with a full listing of where the
donation should be sent. In this case it was: The Equine Foundation of Canada, a/c Susan J. Nelson, R.R. 2, 326 Dyke Rd.,
FALMOUTH, N.S. B0P 1L0. This made it convenient and easy
for donors to contribute, and usually brochures were available
also at the service.
Much appreciated also are the single gifts made by horse enthusiasts, sometimes for someone who has been gone from us for
several years. In addition to the Memorial Donations, EFC funding has been received for special occasion events or maybe just
because there is a special spot in someone’s heart for the horse
or other pet. Trail rides, auctions, and other such activities also
contribute. For example, an Alberta youth group in the past year
raised more than $500 by making horse cookies and selling them
at the various horse shows they attended.
The Equine Foundation which was formed in 1983 has contributed over $900,000 to the
Canadian horse industry, much of it to the five
Canadian veterinary colleges for equipment and
research, and of late for
scholarships for students in
equine study. Funding has
also been given for group
clinics and smaller such
projects, as well as for two

Introducing the New Owner Issue
The summer issue is taking on an exciting new theme, and SPOTLIGHTS
you are invited to get involved!
This issue of the magazine typically is the most widely
distributed one of the year. It is distributed at the annual
Calgary Stampede, and continues on to the Challenge of the
Breeds event. This year, we have a rare opportunity to also
be distributed at the 2015 Pan Am Games, taking place just
outside of Toronto, Ontario. This is international exposure!
Given the broad audience this issue of the Canadian Morgan can reach, we are giving it a new emphasis this year
that promises to please everyone-longtime owners and future owners alike.
Each page of this summer’s issue will be focused on helping new Morgan owners, and horse buyers who have not
settled on their perfect horse yet. The articles will be created from your favourite stories on things your Morgans
have done, from the realms of pleasure and trail riding, to
showing, competing, and working on the ranch.
Do you have an amusing or heart-warming Morgan tale
to tell? Please e-mail Lisa Peterson and she will give you a
call to get your story from the horse’s mouth. Just send an
email stating, “I have a story!” Or, type it up and e-mail it
directly! These stories will be compiled to spotlight just how
user-friendly the world’s best breed can be.
Do you breed, train, sell Morgans, or offer lessons?
This is your issue to be seen in! A Morgan Sales Centre
and a Horse Services Centre will have special sections in
this issue. Promote your Morgans or horse services with a

Yo u t h
Hello Canadian Youth!
I never gave up
on wanting my own
horse and continued to ask. To my
surprise, it finally
happened. I have a
mare named TamRacs Renne de Solei
(Aryia) now. She is
eight-years old and
I’ve had her for almost five years; three
of which I leased her.
I hope spring has arrived where ever you may
live and the snow is long gone! First off I would
like to congratulate all the youth high point winners, provincially and nationally. Well done!
Thank you to those youth who submitted
scholarship & sportsmanship nominations. We
had no entries in the OYAS which is disappointing. Hopefully we can get some entries for 2015,
as the winner will get their trip to the CMHA convention paid for. The convention in 2016 will be in New Brunswick. Our winners for 2014 are:
Mackenzie Collins, Loretto, ON - $250 Scholarship Award winner
Melanie Thomas, Bowmanville, ON – Sportsmanship Award winner
Their stories are included in this issue, so please take your time
to read about these two lovely young ladies. Congratulations!
The 2015 Youth Challenge speech topic will be “My perfect
day with my Morgan Horse would include…” It only has to be
a few minutes long and props are allowed! Have fun and be creative with this topic!
I will be travelling to Kamloops, BC for the CMHA board
and Annual General Meetings. If there are any questions, comments, or concerns that anyone would like discussed regarding
the youth, please let me know so that I can have them addressed
at the board meetings.
Thanks,
Lisa Kavanagh

Youth Profiles
Jordan Reid
Hi my name is Jordan Reid. I’m 16 years old and in grade eleven.
My auntie was the first person to introduce me to horses when
I was two-years old, and ever since then, I have been in love with
them. I started a horse fund for one of my own and my Auntie
made sure they always had a few horses so when I would come to
visit and stay, I could be around them.
I convinced my parents to let me start taking lessons when
I was four (they had no idea what they were getting themselves
into). From what started as a lesson a week turned into two then
three. I rode at TamRac Ranch for almost 11 years. It was there I
was introduced to the Morgan horse and began showing.
I currently ride
with Barb Tracey at
B-Ranch just outside
of Edmonton, Alberta. I have been showing in the equitation and pleasure divisions. This past season was
only my fourth show season. Barb has worked Aryia since last
summer and she has come a long way. I am so proud of her. She is
a lovely, pretty mare and she’s all mine! My mom’s even become
attached and enjoys scratching her neck, feeding her treats, and
brushing her.
I also had the fortunate pleasure of showing Bora Bora and
Best’s Mellow Tune. I rode these two geldings throughout the
year and at the 2014 Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show. There I received two second places
on judge’s cards and am the Reserve World Champion for First
Level Junior Exhibitor Dressage. It was a dream come true going
to Oklahoma. It was one of the best weeks of my life.
Besides riding horses, I play U19 Ringette and high school
rugby. I also competitively danced for 10 years doing ballet, jazz
and tap.
I can’t wait for the 2015 season to start.
Ashlee Wheaton
My name is Ashlee Wheaton. I am 19-years old and I live in
Enfield, Nova Scotia. I have been riding for about eight years and
currently go to St. Francis Xavier University, in Antigonish, Nova
Scotia. I am a first year engineering student.
My grandfather always had horses when I was young, but I
wasn’t allowed to start riding until I was 11. My dad won free
riding lessons from Porters Equine Centre in Stewiacke, Nova
Scotia. I began riding Morgan hunters and competed with a black

mare that I leased for a few
years. She was the first horse
I ever rode at Oklahoma for
the Grand National. I started
my saddle seat career a couple
years after, with the first horse
I had ever owned. He was a
Morgan park horse named
Masterclass, who went by the
name of “Scooby.” He began
my love for the saddle seat discipline. I competed with him
for about thre years as well as
my second horse, Exclusively
Ferrari, whom we added to my
string about two years after we
bought Scooby.
When I got serious about competing, my dad and I decided
that it would make sense to have the horses in the states, to cut
travel costs and such. So we moved to Cater Stables in Dunbarton, New Hampshire, and decided that it was time to move on
from the horses that I was so fond of, and who had played such
a large role in developing my passion for saddle seat, and on to
something more challenging. So, as hard as it was for me to make
the decision to sell my first two horses, we decided that it was the
right thing to do if I wanted a shot at a World Championship in my
last junior exhibitor year. We bought my first Saddlebred when I
was 18, and last year I won my very first World Championship
with her in Louisville, Kentucky. Her name is CH Extremely Fortunut and goes by “Chalupa.”
My current Morgan is a five year old gelding named Unzipped
who goes by “Zippy,” who I love very much. We went on to win a
Reserve World Championship at Oklahoma last year, which was
such an honor. He and I had trained so hard and come so far as a
team in so little time. I think when we entered that ring in Oklahoma, he wanted to win just as badly as I did. He is truly a oneo- a kind horse, with true Morgan characteristics; kind and gentle
with an honest loving heart, I must say I couldn’t have been more
honored to be the one that got to ride him to victory lane.
I owe so much thanks to everyone who has ever helped me
on my journey, Tina and Don Porter, Kristen and David Cater,
and Cindy Mugnier have helped me train and become the rider
that I am today, and I couldn’t have done it without them as my
mentors. I recently found out that I am this year’s UPHA Chapter
14 Saddlebred Junior Exhibitor of the Year. I cannot think of a
better way to complete my years as a junior exhibitor. As I move
forward into my amateur career, I plan to continue to compete
all summer with Zippy and Chalupa. Looking forward to show
season 2015!!!
Winning 2014 Sportsmanship
Nomination
Melanie Thomas
The sportsmanship award is given to a youth who deserves
recognition for being a good sport and a model Morgan citizen.
It should be given to a youth who does his or her best to partici-
pate in Morgan events, always with a smile
on their face and a positive attitude towards
everyone. I believe that Melanie Thomas is
very deserving of this award.
Melanie is a relatively new youth to the
Morgan circuit, but she entered it with an
amazing attitude. She is very dedicated to
the breed and tries her best to get involved
in any way she can. This year she wrote out
her speech, and practiced her judging skills
for the OMHC Youth Challenge. Sadly, she
was the only entry and did not get a chance
to compete.Youth Challenge entries receiving riding awards.
She took the news as best she could
and understood why it happened and was
very understanding of the situation. She just
smiled and said, “Hey, there is always next
year,” and she is already looking forward
to the chance to compete in the youth challenge in 2015.
Melanie is always congratulating everyone on amazing rides and is genuinely
happy for everyone competing. To me that is
a major part of being a good sport. If someone beats you, no matter
the circumstance, you go up and congratulate them on an amazing
ride, and that is what Melanie does.
For the reasons above, I truly believe that Melanie Thomas is
very deserving of the CMHAY Sportsmanship Award.
Sincerely,
Ashley Reeson

2015 Youth Scholarship Recipient
Mackenzie Collins
My name is Mackenzie Collins; I am a grade 12 student at
Banting Memorial High School in Alliston, or as I like to call it,
“the middle of no where.” I am currently applying for university
and while doing so I decided it would be a great idea to participate
in the CMHAY Scholarship Contest. I have been a member since
I was a little girl, it is even joked that I learned to ride before I
could walk and talk. It happens to run in the family, I am the third
generation of dedicated Morgan lovers on my mother’s side and
the second generation of riders on my dad’s, but I will discuss
this more in-depth later on. I am turning 18 on February 3, right
around this time I will be hoping to receive some acceptance letters to the programs I’ve applied for, which include Forensic Science, Forensic Psychology, and Pre-Law. While I’m away I am
also avidly looking for an equestrian team I can join, as I would
find it almost impossible to part with my beloved Morgan even
for a few months!
When I was 11-years old there came to be a time of great debate in my household. As my father is well-known in the jumper
world, naturally that is the path he wanted me to take. However,
my mother and grandmother joined forces to convince me that the
Morgan horse was the direction to go in. Needless to say, it didn’t

take much convincing! I’d already fallen in love with the breed
while riding my mother’s horses as I was growing-up. However, I
am to this day a daddy’s girl and that is precisely how I ended up
with my first Morgan horse, Commit to Memory (Tug Hill Commando x C and B Memory Lane), my beautiful chestnut gelding
who at 14.1-hands was a perfect match for a 13 & under junior

same categories. Banker can also be
credited as the main reason for my winning the OMHC Youth Challenge for
the first time and multiple times after
as well. Banker was truly the perfect
first horse and gave me the confidence
I needed to become both the rider and
person I am today. Because of him I became way more involved in the CMHA
and OMHC Youth programs.
That brings us to the present day.
Banker was sold a few years ago to lovely girl in Alberta where he has added a
few titles more to his name for her, and
I am the proud and loving owner of Attn
Postmaster (Cedar Creek Harlequin x Saddletime Scarlet O’Hara).
“Prince” is a bit more of a challenge as his name would suggest,
but he makes it absolutely worth it. Together we have won multiple CMHA and OMHC championships and we were even the first
team to win the Horse Show Wire “Best Performance” twice, at the
2012 and 2013 OMHC Classic Horse Show. Prince is an absolutely
outstanding hunter and it is my wish to continue showing him for
many more years to come, also in our future plans is Oklahoma in
2015 for my last year as a junior exhibitor.
to give back to the organization as
much as I can. I started by becoming
the Vice President of the OMHC Youth
Club where I am currently, and I hope
to one day make my way to President
so that I may help the club in more
ways. I am also looking forward to
being on the show committee for the
OMHC Morgan and Saddlebred Classic for the 2015 show season. I have
some great ideas and want the current
members to have fun while also attracting some new members as well.
Another important part of giving back
to me is by introducing others into the
Morgan breed. I give lessons to a friend of mine not-for-profit,
as I know how much she loves horses and how healing they are
for her. I love watching her fall in love with the breed the way I
did many years ago. But the thing I am the most proud of is the
Sportsmanship Award I won last year. It was so nice to see that I
had made a noticeable impact and people saw my efforts. I love
meeting new members and bringing together the club. Like I said
earlier, we are a large family and it’s a great atmosphere that I
have grown up in.
The CMHA has become a sort of family to me and I have
known most members since I was a baby. This has made me want

You may show at local club shows, travel a distance for weekend competitions, or turn your competitive hobby into an annual
campaign as you travel from one big event to the next. Or maybe
you just watch from the show ads and shake your head at having the time to achieve such things! Whatever your approach to
taking your Morgans into the show arena, one concern is shared
by everyone. How do you achieve an
up-to-date turnout to make a positive
impression on the judge without breaking the bank?
When show season comes around,
we prep our horses, pack our tack
boxes and polish our tack. Many of us
are lucky to fit into our show clothes
from last year, but is it a good idea to
wear the same colour jacket or coat year
after year? Does our derby look a little
worn? Giving attention to our turnout
deserves at least a few moments of time
as each new show season approaches,
and evaluating whether it’s time for a
wardrobe facelift or not.
Our show ring look is just as important as our horse’s. If you are on a
tight budget like most exhibitors, you
can still use some savvy tricks to have
a world class turnout as you pursue the Plaid shirt, paisley
more engaging projects of polishing flower tie, solid
silver, oiling bridles, and trimming legs silk vest and a rich

those of us who may be fashion challenged! Right, wrong or otherwise,
there is a “look” that one strives to achieve in the show pen
and again, but even with the ultimate designer outfit, it’s not
about the money, but about details. When somebody is put
together well and all the details are in order, they send out a
feeling of confidence. Confidence is usually a result of hard work,
knowing your horse, and knowing your job. Even if you are little
bit lacking in the confidence department, if you can look the part
to the judges, you’re at least part of the way there and that will
have a positive outcome on your performance.
ON TREND
Heather Marchiafava of Commotion Consignment Apparel in
Lexington, Kentucky has noticed certain saddle seat trends in the
Saddlebred world that tend to carry over to the Morgan as well
as Arabian worlds. One current trend includes having day suits
and day coats made of fabrics with a sheen. The popular coats
are silk or satin, and come in all sorts of spectacular colours. Although teals and whites were big in
2014, this year seems to show that shades of green
will be the most popular. The “tone-on-tone” look
for vests, shirts, and ties is a favourite one at this
time as well.
Trends in other disciplines
are being noticed as well.
Trainer Sonja Lorenson of Cold
Creek Inc, in Alberta, says in
the Morgan arena, you need to
consider tradition at all times. In
the most traditional discipline
of hunter pleasure, people have
been taking liberties with colours of breeches, jackets, and
their fabrics to the point that
some outfits become more of a
distraction. The outfits in western pleasure and pleasure driving are the blingiest and showiest, but flash is used tastefully.
Lorenson has also noticed more
people in saddle seat classes are
wearing one-colour suits and
moving away from the lighter
tone day coat. In the evening,
however, the jackets are getting
fancier, and there is a wider variety of material. Vest combinations and formal tuxes are being
dressed up with formal, silk shirts. Carriage driving is a discipline
where anything different can cost you a placing, so many stay true
to the traditional outfits.
COLOUR COORDINATED
There has always been a concern with matching your outfit
to your horse. For Amy Fleming of Show Ring Outfitters in Ap-

this would be a collar bar with matching post earrings and
lapel pin. Some like to add a tie with bling or a tie tack. On
the back, number magnets and a hair accessory are good.
“You don’t want to be one of
five or six riders in a class on a
chestnut horse, wearing a navy
suit.” Fleming says, “It’s too
hard for the judge to keep track
of you!”
Lorenson notices the Morgan World Championship
has remained pretty traditional compared to several other
breeds. She agrees that moderate bling is acceptable, and is
necessary in Western. Keep in mind the session, division,
and the colour of your horse. She says, “Consider what you
want the judge to see.”
Fleming recommends for a
bay horse, go with a black coat
over navy. The black coat will
enhance the black points on the
bay. If you are riding a chestnut,
try wearing a day coat, or something distinctive. As chestnuts
come in a variety of shades, keep
in mind certain tones of brown

blues and earth tones, it will be
easy to compliment your Morgan.
Similarly, Marchiafava feels you
don’t have to technically match your
horse, but you do want to blend and
compliment each other for that beautiful picture. Being mindful of the tone
and colour of your horse can help in your
choosing of colours.
Lorenson says, “The whole goal is a
complimentary picture. Remember the
focus in the ring is your horse (in a pleasure class). Too much sparkle, too much
bling, an oversized, bright colour saddlepad, all detract from your horse. Remember what you want the judge to see.”
TWINKLE, TWINKLE
On the topic of bling, Fleming says,
“Done correctly, bling is a wonderful thing.”
Bling can add the finishing touch of
sparkle and colour to an outfit, but there
is such a thing as too much sparkle.
Breed and discipline tend to control the
amount. Fleming has a rule of thumb for
saddle seat of three to four items on the
front and two on the back. An example of
No one wants the
judge to only remember
the amount of bling.
As
Marchiafava
notes, bling can depend
on your personality or
your trainer. She thinks
for adults at least, “less
is more.” A hair-bow,
tie, tie bar and whip
should be enough. Objects on the lapel should
be small and have some
special meaning to the
rider. Fleming notes
rhinestone-handle
whips are popular, but
recommends to stick
with clear or Aurora
Borealis (AB) coated so you can make your whip work with any
discipline or shirt and vest combinations. Make sure you get the
correct length of whip for your discipline, and check to see if
it is the correct stiffness. Dressage whips are
about 38 to 40 inches, and saddle seat whips
should be shorter than 36 inches.
What’s too much? Too much bling would be
a tie with bling, tie tack with bling, crystal tie
ring, crystal tie bar, earrings, and a bling brooch
pin. It would be too busy for your eyes to rest on
any one detail.
DETAILS
If you are moving from local shows to
higher levels, you have to pay attention to
details to up your game. Lorenson says, “Details are everything, fit is paramount.”
At local shows, you have the option of
buying clothing off the rack or from someone else. You can still get it tailored. As you
move up in the levels of shows, try to buy
the best fabric possible. You don’t need to
buy a hundred different outfits, just collect
several different vests and ties. For Western,

Fleming says to match colourcoordinated number magnets with
collar bars and hair accessories
for an “A” show look. Right now,
crystal barrettes and hair pins are a
hot trend. If you are on a budget but
don’t want to look like it, try clear
number magnets and a bun bow, instead of using a barrette. Still try to

some tasteful bling on jackets, and
pins at the collar are a simple and
pretty finish. As for hats, dark is
not usually flattering for women.
If you have dark chaps, try matching your hat to a light colour in
your shirt.
“Personally, I think you should
look sharp no matter if you are
showing at the local or national
level,” says Marchiafava. “Fit and
quality of garments should always
be number one no matter what
level you show. Just as you dress
yourself outside of the show ring,
take pride in your appearance in
the show ring!”
Each division has a different
look, and in each look there are
different levels. Lorenson gives
an example: pastels look good on
young girls, but not adults. She also
encourages supportive undergarments like Spanx. They won’t inThe most important thing about

In saddle seat classes, patterned shirts, vests and ties usually
successfully finish an outfit.
In western, you will see the standard dark chaps or earth tone
chaps worn. Fringe is usually used by men and trainers, whereas
the scallops on chaps are usually good for amateurs and juniors
as that style won’t draw attention from movement. Western sees
This usually indicates silk content or high thread count (usually
the reason these suits cost a bit more than others). Some polyester can have similar effects at a lower cost, so keep your eyes
open. Older outfits can still have nice fabric. What you save on
your suit, you can use to get professional tailoring. Fleming cautions to stay away from the “80s-big-shoulders-look.”
The Fingertip Guide to Coordinating Horse & Human
Horse Coat Colour: Chestnut, Bay, Brown “Red Heads”
Human Attire Colour: Earth tones such as rust, sand, cream, peach and chocolate are all flattering base colors on these horses.
These colours extend to trendy linen and copper shades.
Horse Coat Colour: Bay, Black, Grey or White Horses “Brunettes”
Human Attire Colours: Bright, bold jewel tones compliment these rich colours.
Poppy red, Linen, Monaco Blue, African Violet are all some trendy shades that fit this category.
Horse Coat Colour: Neutral Toned Palominos “Blondes”
Human Attire Colours: Go with earth or jewel tones, as well as the blue/green tones that will suit your horse’s colour.
Versatile Rider?
If you are riding horses from both colour groups, look for shades of blue/green, like teal, deep green, sage and turquoise, that flatter
almost any horse.
A black suit is always in style for any colour horse. But remember that the majority of your competition may also be wearing black,
so make sure yours is distinctive and well-tailored!

Ties are important, so
make sure you pick one that
suits your outfit perfectly.
Fleming recommends picking a tie that “elevates” the
shirt and vest combo you
have. Your boots should be
completely covered and your
shirt collars need to fit correctly, there should be a single finger’s worth of space. If
your collar is too big, you can
have a tailor adjust it. Vests
should be snug, but not tight.
If vests are too big, they add
bulk to your look. You can
get them altered as sometimes only a seam down the
back is needed.
Fleming agrees with
consignment. “You can save
by buying pieces on consignment. There are deals on
older day coats if you don’t
need a day suit. Remember
crystal or clear bling will go
with everything. “
Consignment websites
are a host of great combinations and ideas. You can
shop online until you find
the look you want.
Fleming’s main advice
is, “SPLURGE on a properly shaped, neatly rolled

“Get the best quality you can afford.” Lorenson says, “No
matter where you show, or budget, fit matters most.”
Fleming shares some knowledge, “Because the shirt and vest
will be mostly covered up by your jacket, this is Grandma’s opportunity to pull out the sewing machine to keep on a tight budget. Many
shirt and vest alterations can be handled by a home seamstress.”
Your boots, gloves and whip should match each other, and go
with the suit. Black gloves and boots go well with a navy suit,
but those in a navy colour will look more finished and professional. If you are wearing a brown or tan suit, for that winning
look wear brown boots, brown gloves and carry a brown whip.
Absolutely everyone should wear gloves.
11 issues per year, 30,000+ readers
Lorenson has similar thoughts. She says colour blocking is
not a good idea. Stay away from wearing different colour gloves
than your jacket, or different colour boots than your chaps.
Your Best Value Magazine!
“It interrupts the flow,” Lorenson says, stressing that wellfitted show clothes are a must and you want to make your outfit
seamless. She has a simple rule for an elegant outfit: match your
chaps to your boots and your gloves to your jacket.
If you have to cut corners, go consignment. If you decide to get
a suit on consignment, budget for a suit or coat at about $600 up to
$2,000, because it will depend on the maker and quality of fabric.

In Remembrance:
Greg Reeves
On November 12, 2014 Greg
Reeves, a wonderful friend and horseman, passed away.
Greg was a friend to everyone, a
true horseman, diplomat, and dedicated to the Morgan horse and everyone
who was involved with the Morgan
horse. He had been involved with the
Morgan horse most of his life, growing up involved in the Morgan breed.
His family owned and bred Morgans
under the Chestnut Hill prefix.
Many will remember Greg for his
recent endeavours in the Western Pleasure division with his mare, Chestnut
Hill Felicity. However, those involved
in showing Morgans longer will know
Greg was also very successful in many
other disciplines as well; particularly trail! Greg competed across
Canada and the United States, including at the Grand National.
Although his show ring accomplishments are impressive, it
is who he was as a person that was truly admirable. Greg always
made a point to be encouraging, welcoming and kind. The Ontario Morgan Horse community has been left with a huge hole in
its heart. The entire Morgan community sends their deepest sympathies to Geoff and Charlene, Mitchell and Madison Reeves, and
Theresa White.
Just like so many of us, I have been at an utter loss of words
over Greg’s passing. He was like an uncle to me from the moment I joined the Morgan club. The first OMHC Classic I went
to he was running the judging portion of the youth challenge. He
made me feel welcomed and made sure I had an enjoyable time
doing it. Greg and I had chosen the same placing and reasoning’s,
and I ended up winning it that year. From that point on, I always
seemed to do very well under Greg because we had the exact
same idea on what a Morgan should be.
Then at the Classic when I saw him and Chestnut Hill Felicity
(Missy) go in the western pleasure class, I instantly fell in love
with Missy. From that point on, I looked forward to most Morgan
shows because I would get to see Greg and Missy go in the ring.
I feel so privileged to have seen that combo go into so many
classes. The shows just are not going to be the same without that
duo in there, usually coming out as champions or reserve.
Greg also played a major part in making my first OMHC
Banquet memorable. I remember being in the hospitality room
coloring quietly at the table. I was quite shy and did not like big
crowds. Then Greg and Geoff Reeves came over and helped me
color in and complete the activities in my CMHA book. That
small gesture meant the world to me, and still to this day, it is one
of the memories that has stuck with me the most. How he could
take a little bit of time from making sure everyone had their drinks full to sit down and
color with me.
In recent years, Greg and I have had
many small inside jokes. He always likes to
bug us how he went to U of T and got two
degrees in Literature. It was a joke he started
to bug Lauren McGinty that he later used to
bug me with. No matter what I would say or
do, I was wrong because Greg had his two
degrees and knew everything. He also liked
to bug me to no end about how it is past my
bedtime. It was not an unusual scene to see
on my Facebook posts. If they were after 8
PM Greg would comment, telling me to go
to bed. Some days I would bug him to let me
stay up later and he would tease me about
how I was a lost sheep. I was always breaking the rules (especially my bedtime) and he kept bugging our
friend Sheila McNaughton that they needed to figure out a plan to
control their lost sheep. I guess in the end I was not truly the lost
sheep, but in fact, it was Greg.
In time, things will begin to get a little easier, but nothing will
ever be the same. I will always have these memories of Greg as
each of us has memories of our own. We may have lost an amazing man who was always the life of a party. But at least we all got
to know such a great man.
No matter how short the time may have been. We will miss
your joking nature. We will miss you and your RV pulling the
horse trailer with Missy on board. We will miss seeing you and
Missy in the ring. Especially showing us all what true horsemanship, class, style, and sportsmanship looks like. We will miss you
pulling around your cooler on that little wagon at the horse shows.
We will miss you trying to hide your beer under a towel. We will
miss you at all the Morgan club events, especially the Classic,
CNE (even though it is not around anymore) and the banquet.
We will all miss you for different reasons and different aspects
of our lives. However, I hope even though we all are missing you
dearly that you have found peace. That you are finally free from
whatever was haunting you here and that you are reading this and
smiling. That you can see how many people your presence truly
touched. That you can also see how many people looked up to
you as a role model. That you can see how truly loved you were
by so many people. I hope deep down that you are at peace, and
that one day I will be able to see you again. When I do, you can
bug me about your two degrees, how it is way past my bedtime,
and how your lost sheep has finally come home.

GREENER PASTURES
JOLAND OVATION
May 8, 1984 – January 22, 2015 Retiring Joland Ovation from the show ring back in 2007
wasn’t difficult to do at all. Over the years, he had many outstanding achievements at Morgan and open horse shows, and he
had proven to us he was special. On the morning of January 22
this winter, we said our final goodbyes to our special homebred
superstar.
It started when the family decided to send our typey little chestnut mare, Acoma Morningstar, to Saddleback Sensation, a gorgeous, outstanding bay Morgan stallion, for breeding. The result
was our first foal, a handsome chestnut colt named Joland Ovation.
As a yearling, “OV” was shown sparingly, and we had fun
watching and playing with him during his early stages while he
grew up.
As a two-year old he was broke to harness by our good friend
Lori Gajowski. Lori was living in Ontario and this was our first
experience working with a professional trainer. They did very well
together in the show ring. In 1986 he was Canadian-Bred Champion at the Ontario Morgan Classic. In the same year, at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) he won Champion Stallion and the
4 & Under Driving Class, competing against many top exhibitors.
When our friend Lori moved back to B.C., OV was with her!
They had a chemistry between them and they showed exceptionally well on the west coast. At the Far West Regional Morgan
show, OV won Junior Park Saddle Champion as a four-year old.
At the B.C. Morgan Show he won Reserve Champion Stallion.
OV came back home to us and was gelded. He became an
extraordinary Morgan for the Joyce grandchildren; Stephanie
and Derek Ross, and Lisa, David and Danny Kavanagh. His new
show career as a gelding began in the western, working hunter
and hunter pleasure divisions. OV’s patience and laid-back attitude gave him a gentle walk, a comfortable jog or trot, and a quiet
lope or canter in his new disciplines.
During her junior exhibitor year, Lisa Kavanagh had great
success showing OV in many youth classes. In 1999, OV won the
Working Hunter Championship at the Ontario Morgan Classic. At
the CNE, he placed third out of 20 entries in Hunter Seat Equitation.
In 2001 at the New York State Breeders Show, OV went Western
Pleasure
Junior Exhibitor
Champion.
At the New
York Amateur Morgan Show,
Lisa
and
OV were
the Western PleaLinda Ross with Chestnut Hill Specialty (OV’s best pal sure Junior
these last few years) and OV with Stephanie Ross in Exhibitor
2013.
Champions plus
they continued
their winning ways
and won
the Western Seat
Equitation
Championship!
Lisa and
David,
throughOV and Lisa Kavanagh jumping at the Ontario
out
the
Morgan Classic in 1999.
20012004 show seasons at the Classic, won Western Pleasure Junior
Exhibitor Champion in consecutive years.
OV was great for Stephanie and Derek Ross, and Danny Kavanagh for lead-line and walk-trot classes. Stephanie and OV
over the past few years had shown at many Morgan and open
shows and had great success and many wins in the junior exhibitor divisions. It was at the gymkhana show at the Markham
Fair in 2004 that Stephanie and OV sparkled. They had winning
classes against all breeds in the showmanship, hunter pleasure,
hunt seat equitation, command class and steady hands classes.
Each class consisted of about 15-18 entries, great promotion for
the breed.
Over the years, OV had many accomplishments that earned
him CMHA “Justin Morgan” awards in Hunter Pleasure and
Youth Hunter Pleasure, and a Gold Medallion in the VMMA. He
also contributed to Lisa and David earning their Justin Morgan
Honours in equitation.
The last few years saw OV become our “Patron” at the farm
for the riding lesson students. For beginning riders, OV would
walk or slow jog without any problem during the lesson. He really helped build confidence.
At age 29, his health started to decline. His kidneys and liver
were beginning to fail him, but he never complained. He was
quite happy to start living back indoors during the evening. He
had been living outdoors 24/7 for the past few years but he made
it clear he wasn’t keen about those arrangements any longer, and
preferred the indoors during the hot days and cold nights. So he
got his wish. We pampered him as best we could and let him have
the run of the farm.
It was extremely hard to find him in pain that morning. OV
was a simple horse all these years, we never had to call the vet for
any emergency for him. And it was our wish to end the pain and
let him go on his way. He has earned his rest.
