Anjna - Senior Science Technician Anjna is an award-winning school Senior Science Technician, but her real reward is the success of her students. Anjna’s job is to develop, manage and organise the practical resources needed by the science teachers. This enables them to give children a hands on experience of the science curriculum. During her own school days she always preferred practical activities to textbooks. “It really is a much better way to demonstrate certain concepts”. She now works at Haringey Sixth Form College where she’s been since it opened in 2007. During that time she has faced the challenge of setting up a new educational establishment across all three areas of science. More recently she was among the winners of the ‘Salters – CLEAPSS National Award for Science Technician of the Year 2015’. This award publicly acknowledges the contribution science technicians make to school science departments. However, for Anjna, true job satisfaction comes from the success of her students, some of whom will make up the future generation of scientists. “It’s really gratifying when they come back and tell us how they’re getting on at university”. 1984 After leaving school she joined the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) as a Trainee Science Technician which included 1 day a week release to study for an Ordinary National Certificate in Science (ONC) 1989 One year in the private sector as an Assistant Analytical Chemist 1992 Following the birth of her first child she returned to working in a school as a Science Technician again 1998 Studied for part time for a BSc Hons degree in Health Environmental & Biological Science whilst working as a Science Technician 2016 Science Technician, Haringey Sixth Form College Find out more at: technicians.org.uk The encouragement and promotion of vital STEM technician roles in the UK is supported by The Gatsby Charitable Foundation.
