TARANAKI JOB SEEKERS GUIDE
CV’s and career advice
Your curriculum vitae will be critical in any recruitment
process. There are many online resources that offer advice
on updating your CV, as well as local providers who can help
you make sure your CV shows your skills and abilities well.
Some recruitment agencies can also help with your CV as
part of their registration process or as an added service.

Using your networks
Many jobs are found through networking, so your networks
are a good place to start when looking for your next job
opportunity. Here are some tips to find work through the
people you know:
USE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORKS
If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile, create one. Ensure your
profile is up to date with your skills and achievements, and post
messages asking your friends and followers if they have a job
available, or know of anything coming up.
IT’S OKAY TO ASK
If you’ve got friends or family members at other companies, ask
them if they know of anything coming up, or to pass your CV
on to the Human Resources department. If you’re in clubs or
teams, put the word around. Make it known that you’re looking
for opportunities, and don’t feel embarrassed – networking is
something successful people do all the time.
FOLLOW EVERY LEAD
If you hear of something, give the company a call or knock on the
door. You’ve got nothing to lose by making a polite enquiry.

Where to find job listings
Jobs are advertised in a number of places, so it’s worth
keeping an eye on all of the following. In most cases, you can
set up alerts to send you an email when new jobs – in your
skill area, region or both – are listed.
TARANAKI.INFO WEBSITE
The Taranaki Jobs website, facilitated by Venture Taranaki, lists
vacancies in the region, and has nearly 1,000 registered local
employers. You can load up your CV for potential employers to
look at by registering as a job seeker for free.

SEEK
Seek is one of the key online job listing sites, and is worth
checking regularly. You can search listings by industry, region,
keyword and salary band. By registering, which is free, you can
receive alerts about new jobs. www.seek.co.nz

industry and salary. www.trademe.co.nz/jobs
TARANAKI DAILY NEWS

that aren’t always listed online, check Saturday’s paper.
Recruitment agencies
Recruitment agencies are also worth considering. Often this
will involve a meeting where you discuss the opportunities
you are looking for, and your career path so far. Each agency
tends to specialise in a few core industries or type of work,
so it is worth picking the one or two agencies that best
reflect the type of job you want.
