Newsletter Now Published Bi-Monthly When the Church Council sat down to prepare the 2015 budget, they looked closely at all of our normal operating expenses. In an effort to reduce spending, they tried to cut wherever possible, without sacrificing the basic services and missions of the church. They will also be rehearsing on April 19 & May 3 for another performance on May 10, which is Mother’s Day. One place it was decided that we could realize some savings was to change our newsletter to a bi-monthly publication, rather than monthly. This should save us about $500 a year. Palm Sunday Food Pantry Collection This means, however, that to have all the news and events included in the newsletter, we have to plan ahead a bit more carefully. Submissions are always welcome, but please be aware of the publication schedule and get information to Cyndy before the deadlines. (These deadlines are always noted in the masthead - see below.) On March 29 we will be collecting your donations for the local food pantry. These will help give someone’s family an Easter dinner. (If it’s too hard for you to bring a bag of food to the church, a donation of money works, too.) Please remember to keep your newsletter handy, so that you can refer to it throughout the two months that it covers! April - May 2015 Letter From the Pastor Samuel Raymond Utz introduced himself to his family and the medical staff at Strong Memorial Hospital at 1:30 P.M. on March 8. I was in the shower when Amy’s call came in. Even given those circumstances, Emily and I managed to get on the road to Rochester in 45 minutes. That has to be some kind of a record for us. And here’s another record. Little Sam’s birth makes three out four of our grandchildren born on a Sunday. What better time to make an entrance into this life than on the Lord’s Day! Of course, if your grandpa is a pastor, it makes for some excitement and last minute hustle to cover the worship service at church. Samuel arrived after a relatively brief and uncomplicated labor. He weighed in at 7 pounds 11 ounces and measured 20 inches long. His mom was chipper and conversational throughout the whole process, even during the part that’s called “hard labor.” She calmly focused on the work at hand and managed it in a way that left no doubt that everything was going to be fine. Dr. Dad was all pappa during the delivery. Although, I have to say that it was really reassuring to have his medical side there, too. He’d quietly take care of beeping and booping equipment when the maternity staff was busy with other matters. Amy felt so good after the delivery that she and Sam came home the next day. Alex refers to his little brother as “my baby.” I think that these two are going to become fast friends. March will always be the grandbaby birthday month for Emily and me. Three out of our four now celebrate birthdays in this month: 3/8, 3/17, and 3/22. Kyle is our September baby, but I bet he wouldn’t mind being an honorary March birthday boy, especially if it means getting cake and presents. We refer to birth as the beginning of the miracle of life. I know that we say it often, but the sentiment can never become trite. How could it, after seeing and hearing my grandson take his first breath? This little human being is so much more than the result of biological trial and error or mathematical permutations and combinations. He is quite simply and purely a gift of God. And what has God done with this gift? God has put him into our arms so that we can put him into our hearts. Yes, the miracle of life, indeed! Just a note at the end to give some background on Samuel’s name. Both his paternal and maternal great grandfathers are named Raymond. He has a Great Uncle Raymond on the Utz side of the family and several Raymonds as distant relations on Emily’s side of the family. Amy and Mike chose Samuel because they like the name. Its Hebrew root means, “God heard” or “requested of God.” That’s because Samuel was God’s answer to Hannah’s prayer in the first chapter of I Samuel. As it turns out, the name Samuel even has a family connection – his Great Great Uncle Samuel Hall, the brother of my grandfather, William Hall. Thank you for all of your well wishes and congratulations as we welcome Baby Sam into our lives. Emily and I are looking forward to watching this little miracle of life unfold and grow. Easter blessings to you all, Pastor Steve The Vineyard Page - 4 April - May 2015 Clean-Up Crew – Break is Over On Easter we will again have our pancake breakfast prior to the morning worship service. We will be serving from 9 to 10 am. This year we are trying something different. We are asking that you make cash donations for the items listed below, and we will shop for them. Donations may be given to Jeff Boots or Cyndy Corrieri - mailed to the church - or just place it in the offering plate on any Sunday morning. Items Needed The woman who has been cleaning the church for the past several months will be leaving us at the end of March. Colleen has completed her community service hours, and has done an excellent job of cleaning for us, but now has to move on. This means that our church members who were on the cleaning crew will need to resume those duties as of April 1st. If you are signed up to cover an area, but are unable to continue, please let Sam know ASAP so that we can find a replacement. Otherwise, we assume that those on the list (which is in the narthex) will be resuming their respective cleaning tasks. 5 half gallons of OJ - 3.00 each or 15.00 total 10 lbs. of flour - 6.00 for 5 lbs or 12.00 total ½ gallon of syrup - 18.00 10 lbs. of sausage - 25.00 Coffee - 10.00 2 lbs. of butter - 3.00 lb or 6.00 total Plates, napkins, juice cups - 25.00 Church Losses Helpers Needed Virginia Uschold died on January 25 As always we need helping hands to make this event a success – set up, serving, clean up, etc. Dorothy Wells died on March 9th Please sign up on the sheet in the narthex or let Jeff Boots know how you can help out. A complete list of the items needed will be in the narthex, or you can speak to Edna Stubbs (751-9895) about what to bring. We will also be needing helpers on Friday and Saturday to set up, serve, work in the kitchen, clean up, etc. There will be a sign up sheet for that, too, or let Edna know when you will be able to help. Reservations If you have a large group coming, and would like to reserve a table for the tea, please call Edna. Theme Baskets Needed We will be here on Friday, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm to set up. Baskets and food items may be dropped off then. Raffle baskets should be brought in on that day or sooner. Our goal is to have over 100 baskets, so please consider donating a basket if you haven’t already planned to do so. The baskets may be any theme you like, and should contain new items valued at about $25 to $30 each. They should be in a basket (or alternative container), wrapped in cellophane (clear please), with a note included that tells us what’s in the basket. (Bags are available from the church for 50¢ each.) Please see Cyndy Corrieri (772-7602) if you have questions about baskets. If you’re having trouble thinking of a theme for your basket, here are a few suggestions. Family Game Night - board games & snacks for the whole family Lottery - lottery tickets are popular, perhaps as a “tree” display or in a nice picture frame Date Night - movie passes or DVD with snacks - or passes for putt-putt, Dave & Busters, etc. Italian Night - strainer, pasta, sauce, cheese, checkered napkins, etc. Work Out - water bottle, energy bars, dumbells, resistance bands, etc. Yoga - yoga mat, water bottle, yoga book or DVD, candle, etc. Painting - canvas or watercolor pad, with paints, brushes, etc. Other Options If you would prefer not to put a basket together, you may donate money that we can use to buy items for baskets. We will need to make a reservation, so please let us know you’re coming by signing the sheet that will be available in the narthex (when the time is closer), or by calling Cyndy at 772-7602. Please sign up by May 10. Simple Fare Dinners Now that Lent is over, we will be returning to our 4th Wednesday schedule for our Simple Fare community dinners. This means dinners will be held on Many of you may know that the Save-a-Pet animal rescue organization uses our church in connection with their low-cost spay/neuter program. Periodically, they take a group of cats to a clinic where they can be neutered at a reduced cost. The church is used as a place for the cats to be dropped off in the morning, then picked up later in the day after their surgery. Some are pets of people who might otherwise not be able to afford to do this. Some are strays that need to be neutered to reduce the population of homeless cats. Often cats are also given health exams and shots. You may be interested to know that 1025 cats went through this program and were spayed or neutered in 2014. We’re happy that Lockport UCC is able to play a small role in this program! April 22 and May 27 Dinners are served from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. They are free and open to anyone in the community. If you have any questions, or would like to lend a hand, please speak to Edna Stubbs. (751-9895) Happy Mother’s Day May 10th The Vineyard Page - 9 April - May 2015 Raise the Roof Fund This Spring the main roof on the church sanctuary will need to be replaced. If you’ve looked up during a worship service lately, the water stains are evident. The leaks are small, but there are many of them, and they will only get worse if left unattended. The Church Council has gotten several estimates from different roofing contractors. Mike McHugh’s firm has given us the lowest price for a traditional shingled roof replacement. The Council is also looking into the possibility of installing a metal roof, so a final decision on our contractor has not yet been made. The money for this project is not part of our regular operating budget for the year, and must be raised independently. Our goal for this fund drive is $26,000. At this point, we still have a long way to go to reach that goal. Pentecost Sunday May 24 As of March 15 we have $6,510 paid or pledged. Please give prayerful thought to what you can do to support this vital project. Pledge cards are available in the narthex, or you can just mail your donation or pledge to the church. You may choose to pay your pledge in one lump sum, or spread your payments out over the remainder of this year. If we are to preserve our beautiful church home, this is a project we must undertake together. We have every confidence that our members care deeply about the life of Lockport UCC, and we will meet our goal! The Vineyard “Folks, we haven’t raised enough for the new roof yet, and the rainy season is coming ... so please dig deep.” Page - 10 April - May 2015 Strengthen the Church UCC Offering Each day, visions and dreams are created in the hearts of many in the United Church of Christ. Through the Strengthen the Church offering, they can become a reality. As God calls our congregations to be “church” in new ways, your gift will plant new churches, awaken new ideas in existing churches, and develop spiritual life in our youth and young adults. Because of this offering, many more will hear the good news that “God is still speaking.” Strengthen The Church (STC) is a special mission offering to re-imagine and build the future of the UCC. Shared at the conference and national levels, STC largely supports youth ministries and full-time leaders for new churches in parts of the country where the UCC voice has not been heard. Serving This Month Nursery Staff Bobbi Gritzmacher & Nancy Sy We have only 2 people for our nursery staffing, and need additional volunteers. If you can help, please let Cyndy know. (772-7602) Cookies – Refreshments for Coffee Time after Sunday worship We will be accepting donations to the Strengthen the Church offering throughout May. There will be offering envelopes in the narthex at church, or just mail your gift to the church. April 20, 1985 - Debra & David Mullaney May 17, 1975 - Bill & Edie Hillman On behalf of the Board of Directors for Niagara Community Action Program, I wish to extend our appreciation and thanks to the Lockport United Church of Christ for the donation of $115 collected for the “Souper Bowl of Caring” fundraiser. Lockport United Church of Christ, Thank you for all the donations your congregation gave. I truly appreciate your support. God Bless you all. Did you know we had one? Some people may not know that the church does own a cemetery. The name is “St. Peter’s Cemetery” and is now owned by our combined congregation, Lockport United Church of Christ. It is located on South Niagara St., right next to St. Mary’s Cemetery. Cemetery plots are available for $600 each. If you would like to purchase plots, just call Dan Holler at 433-1385 and he will be happy to help you with that. 1. Replace all light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs; they use 80% less electricity and can last 10 years. 2. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Look for basic and creative ways to recycle and organize a system for recycling. 3. Adjust thermostats and ceiling fans as needed; energy should be used to warm or cool people, not empty rooms. 4. Buy energy-efficient products. When it’s time to replace equipment or appliances, think energy and money savings. 5. Insulate your home or the church building. You can even insulate your water heaters, which will save you 4–9% in water-heating costs. 6. Don’t leave the water running even when shaving or brushing your teeth. Using only the water that’s needed can help conserve for others who need clean water. 7. Track your utilities. Your utility company probably offers a program designed to help customers monitor and save on energy usage. 8. Encourage other churches to conserve energy and water. 9. Look for creative ways to link conservation with love of God and neighbor. For a Christian, these acts are about moral obedience and love, not cultural conformity. “We have one of those at the church, too.” The Vineyard Page - 13 April - May 2015 Dunkirk Camp Schedule Announced Many of you may not be aware that the United Church of Christ has a camp in nearby Dunkirk, New York. It’s called the Dunkirk Camp and Conference Center. DCC is 110 acres of woodland, streams, playing fields, open grounds, and nature trails overlooking Lake Erie. They offer a wide variety of spring, summer, and Fall camps for children, youths, adults, and families. Some are day camps, some are weekends, and some are full weeks. Some of the highlights this year are Harry Potter camp, Superheroes camp, Star Wars camp, Fine Arts camp, Film camp, Theater camp, a Women’s weekend, a Scrapbooking weekend, and many more. There is an early bird discount for registering by April 15. There are many other discounts available as well – such as new campers, sibling discounts, discounts for attending more than one camp, and others. There are pamphlets available in our church narthex with the schedule list, and other details. Or you can check it out on their website: www.dunkirkcc.com OPPORTUNITYISNOWHERE If you have a passion for seniors, an interest in promoting quality senior housing programs and if the title of this article suggested to you that opportunity is “NOW HERE”, there is a unique opportunity awaiting you. The Board of Trustees of the United Church Manor, under the umbrella of the United Church Home Society (UCHS), has some openings for new Board members. Guided by an outstanding and energetic leadership team, the Manor Board and residents are excited about the opening of a newly constructed Community Room which has enhanced program and fellowship opportunities as well. Serving on the United Church Manor Board provides an opportunity for volunteers to be a part of that excitement. Additionally, persons with knowledge or experience with finances, fundraising, landlord/tenant law, human resources or a desire to assist Seniors by helping to develop or continue in the promotion of quality housing opportunities are encouraged to serve on the United Church Manor Board.
