The Festival of Lights, which is celebrated all over India, truly reflects India’s rich multi-cultural heritage. I hope the Festival of Lights brings to all of you joy, happiness, peace and prosperity. With the strengthening and deepening of India-China relations the sheer range and number of activities being held in Shanghai has increased by several fold. In addition, the year 2011 is also being celebrated as the year of India-China Exchange. Under this, for the first time a five hundred member youth delegation visited China in September, of them two hundred came to Shanghai. During the year, the Consulate has helped organize a number of cultural events, exhibitions, talks by eminent Indians and business events. Many academic and cultural e exchanges have also taken place. We have been celebrating the 150th Birth Anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore throughout the year with a number of events both in Shanghai and in other cities in the Eastern China Region. The joint cultural programme by Consulate and Indian Association on May 21 to pay tribute to Tagore was a great success. As always, members of the Indian community have enthusiastically participated in all these activities. In the last one year the size of the Indian community in Shanghai has grown significantly. As in the past, the community has continued to celebrate various Indian festivals with enthusiasm. It is very heartening to see that the entire community comes together to celebrate so many regional festivals under the umbrella of the Indian Association. This spirit of unity in diversity which is one of our greatest strength as a nation finds wonderful expression in the Indian community in Shanghai. On behalf of all of us at the Indian Consulate I would like to wish you all a very happy Diwali. Indradhanush 2011 IA_shanghai.indd 3 10/20/11 4:56:53 PM In May 2011, the Indian community in Shanghai joined the world to celebrate the 150th birthday of great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. Although Tagore won the Nobel Prize for his collection of Poems titled “Gitanjali”, he was also famous for other compositions including Songs, Short Stories, Novels, Drama - all the creative channels in Bengali. His fierce national pride is seen in his gesture when he returned his felicitation by Queen of England in protest of East India Company oppressions meted to Indians. Kavi Pronaam (An Ode to The Poet) -by Damayanti Das The programme was produced by Indian Consulate in Shanghai & Indian Association in Shanghai. Creative content was put together by members of Shanghai Adda (a platform for Bengalis in Shanghai) with the cooperation of the entire Indian community. The programme was staged in Changning District Workers’ Auditorium in Shanghai on May 21, 2011 in the presence of Indian community members as well as our Chinese and other expat friends. In my mind, the most significant outcome of the programme was the participation of young children across all Indian communities. The ages of young children participating in this programme ranged from 3 years to college going ones. Such tremendous effort from our youngsters was truly inspiring. Over two months of rigorous rehearsals, costume changes, memorizing lines as well as dance steps, the children participated cheerfully. Through sheer handwork and determination the children achieved grand success – as evidenced by the thundering applause from the audience , the proud smiles of the parents, and the look of sheer joy and passion in the faces of these young stars. Other highlights of the evening were the poetryreadings in Bengali and English, and the recital of the enchanting and evergreen dance drama – Ritu Rango. Today, after several months since the programme has taken place, the participants are still humming the tunes of Tagore, in the playground, still dancing to the lyrics of melodious Tagore songs. Now that’s inspiration! Events such as “Kavi Pronam” give us hope as well as confidence, that we will be able to teach the next generation the cultural values that we grew up with…. Even in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China. Indradhanush 2011 IA_shanghai.indd 6 10/20/11 4:57:05 PM Zhang Jing Di Charity has been a cornerstone of the Indian Association since its inception; and the story of our journey would be incomplete without the name Zhang Jing Di or Uncle John, as he was fondly known in the expat community of Shanghai. Uncle John’s association with the Indian community goes back to the time of SHILA (Shanghai Indian Ladies’ Association), when the ladies would work with him to raise money for various charities in Shanghai. Uncle John was born into a middle class family in Shanghai 87 years ago; his father was a teacher at the French School and young Zhang also trained to be a French teacher (thus he was also known as Zhang Lao Shi) - and taught in the French Concession. After the liberation in 1949, he continued with his profession until the tumultuous years of the Cultural Revolution. During this period his family suffered a lot as they were from the ‘educated class’ and some members of the family were also sent to work on agricultural fields away from Shanghai. There was a lot of hate and suspicion, which tore away families, friends and soured relationships. The Zhang family kept their faith in humanity and he carried on with his career of teaching French, The True Sevak in Shanghai - By Vivek Arora and later English, as required by the authorities. He retired in 1985 and this was the time when China was beginning to open up to the outside world. It was at this time that Uncle John decided to take an important step that would change his life.He had seen enmity, hatred and suspicion during his life but he had never given up hope on ‘humanity’; and to express this faith he dedicated the rest of his life to charity. Uncle John tirelessly worked to raise funds for the handicapped, aged, orphans and most importantly he helped educate deserving needy children. The Indian Association has been a part of contributing to all of the above projects and has helped in educating scores of needy students. During the last 25 years he had dedicated himself to these causes, and showered love and affection on all who came in contact with him. He was recognized by the Shanghai city government for his tireless efforts and had been given the title of ‘Charity Uncle John’. Uncle John breathed his last in August this year after a courageous fight against cancer. During the entire period he was a picture of happiness, contentment and unwavering in his sincere desire to help anyone in need. With his passing we have lost a hero. The Indian Association is committed to carrying on the good work started 15 years ago and we will continue to educate the needy, who in turn will contribute to society. I take this opportunity to say a final good bye to Zhang Lao Shi and pray for his eternal peace. The IA invites volunteers for the charity work being carried on by SEVA, interested individuals may email iashanghai@ live.com Indradhanush 2011 IA_shanghai.indd 7 10/20/11 4:57:09 PM Bal Divas 2011 by Sushmita Dhekne (Year 12 student) Bal Diwas – the name instantly sparks a nostalgic memory of Jawaharlal Nehru and his love for children. Kids and parents alike are anxious to present a good show on this special day. This year too, Shanghai Indian Association’s Bal Diwas celebrations left the audience mesmerized by the children’s amazing performances. Held at Duwich College, Bal Diwas had a terrific total of 90 participants. The afternoon began with the fancy dress competition by our youngest ever participants in the 2-4 year age group category. The performances included a mischievous Makhan Chor, a fierce Lady Gaga and even the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. The audience was thrilled with the elaborate costumes and the song or dance that accompanied their mini ramp walk. The children’s enthusiasm and appeal surely added to the vibrant atmosphere. The subsequent performances from participants in the 5 to 10 age group commenced with the delightful Lakdi ki Kathi routine and the recitation of Geeta Shlokas. Other performances in this category included a Bengali song, fusion dances, an ABBA number and a traditional Odissi dance. The third and final age group comprised of participants aged 11 to 18 years and brought an energetic end to the afternoon’s celebration. A Tabla performance and a Marathi Folk dance were just a few of the several entertaining presentations. The evening ended with the Consulate General’s visit and prize distribution. As one of the coordinators of the event, I was very impressed with the children and parents’ dedicated involvement. Not only was this year’s Bal Diwas a colourful and entertaining event, it was a also diverse blend of participants and the unity of modern and classical Indian performanc es. A note of thanks to the team of organizers of the event for all their hard work in putting together this wonderful show. Last but not the least, a note of appreciation for the charismatic MC’s – Yash Deshpande, Sanskruti Wale and Saumya Srivastava for their impressive efforts. Here’s to all the children and parents that contributed to this year’s successful Bal Diwas! Thank you all! The Gita Parivar Group children chanted the Bhakthi Yoga and Ram Stuthi, while another group of children (coordinated by Mrs. Bhuvana Ravi) sang bhajans, and a third group chanted geethams coordinated by Mrs. Hema Krishna. Several children ended the program with solo pieces. Swami Thyagaraja, an eighteenth-century saint was one of the most prolific composers of Indian classical music. He was an ardent devotee of Sri Rama and his life and works are celebrated around the world each year. This Shanghai tradition, initiated by Mrs. Bala Swaminathan six years ago, was carried forward in 2011 by an able team comprising music teacher Mrs. Chitra Dharmarajan (from Houston), and volunteers including Mrs. Bhuvana Ravi, Mrs. Thiruchelvy Samuel, Mrs. Hema Murthy, Mrs. Sashikala Ravi, and Dr. Priya Srinivasan. Carnatic music is an ancient South Indian classical form: the diversity and great numbers of audience members who attended the event were testament to the power and strength of the classical and devotional form. Over twenty adults sang Thyagaraja Kritis ably accompanied by Mr. Rangarajan Vellamore on the violin and Ramesh Narasimhan on the mrdangam; the group performed many Thyagaraja favorites with great devotion. A unique feature of this event was the dance performances by Mrs. Bhuvana Ravi and Dr. Srinivasan. They performed a duet and solos to several of the Thyagaraja pieces. It is not a common practice to dance to Thyagaraja kritis and therefore Mrs. Dharmarajan’s vision in bringing this about was met with delight by the audience of over one hundred and fifty who attended the event. The catchy tunes and the sound of the “dandiyas” clashing each other entice even the novices in dandiya dance! It is no secret that whenever a Dandiya Night organized by Indian Association, Shanghai, has taken place it has been an extremely popular event. This year was no different, with Dandiya Night held on a very short notice, due to exceptionally high demand. Thanks to the support of the Mega sponsor, Adani Group, on 23rd September 2011 at Marriot Chengfeng Park Shanghai came alive to the tunes of Hong Kong’s # 1 DJ VJ & DJ HIRO. That was enough to keep the crowd on its feet all night long. Over 200 people attended the festive event. Prizes were given for ‘best dancers’, ‘best couple dancers’ and ‘best dressed participants’. The women wore traditional dresses dazzling with their colorful embroidered cholis, ghagras and bandhani dupattas (traditional attire) embellished with mirror work and ornate jewellery. Even the men wore kurta, dupattas. The whole place looked as if part of India had been moved to Shanghai. Available in India, Thunder Demons has received a great deal of media attention from newspapers such as The Hindu, The Telegraph, The Hindustan Times and Ananda Bazaar Patrika, as well as being featured on live radio and the nightly news in Chennai. Indradhanush 2011 IA_shanghai.indd 37 10/20/11 4:58:49 PM Marathi News In recent years, the number of Maharashtrian families living in Shanghai has steadily increased. “Shanghai Marathi” is a group of these Marathi speaking people trying to keep Maharashtrian traditions alive in Shanghai. As in previous years, special events were organized on Makar Sankranti, Gudhipadwa (Hindu new year day), Ganesh Chaturthi and Kojagiri Pournima. Makar Sankranti The first event of 2011 was “Makar Sankranti”, held in January, where Maharashtrian women celebrated with traditional Haldi-Kum-kum & Waan distribution, games and delicious food. GudhiPadwa “Gudhi Padwa” - the Maharashtrian New Year - was celebrated on April 9, 2011 commencing with the traditional raising of Gudhi and Ganesh Vandana. Then local artists performed the show – “ Gosht eka khambachi ani chamchamatya nachachi” – “the story of lamp pole and glittering dances.” The show explored the changes in dance forms and styles in Marathi cinema from 1940 to 2010. It showcased various dances, Marathi lavani, gondhal and even film item songs. The presentation was scripted by Manoj Kulkarni, and choreographed by Sonali Kale. More than 30 artists – young and old - participated with enthusiasm and dedication. After this show, popular artist Dr. Salil Kulkarni presented his music programme with Prof. Arun Nulkar. Both had flown in from India especially for this event. Ganesh Chaturthi Ganesh Chaturthi festival is, of course, celebrated across India. In Shanghai too, members of the Indian community came together to celebrate. This year’s theme was - Ganeshotsav - past, present and future. Manoj Kulkarni showcased how the festival celebration has evolved over a period of time and become more global and eco-friendly. This was demonstrated with the help of traditional dances in different regions of India, choreographed by Sonali Kale, songs directed by Madhav Agharkar, skits with projector slide show and commentary in English ( by Shruti) and Marathi ( by Trupti). The audience responded enthusiastically to the wonderful performance involving approximately 40 participants. Shrikant Aradhey talked about Shanghai Marathi and Amit & Aparna Waikar introduced new members. Other event highlights: modak-making competition for ladies, and photo competition for families a beautiful clay idol of Ganesha made in Shanghai in just 2 days by Vedang Kulkarni. Shanghai Marathi endeavours to celebrate traditional events in an innovative and memorable way. We wishe all IA members and Indian Community in Shanghai, a “Shubh Deepavali” and a Happy, prosperous, successful and fulfilling New Year. Indradhanush 2011 IA_shanghai.indd 38 10/20/11 4:58:52 PM Shanghai Adda If I am growing up in Shanghai humming Tagore songs, it is because I was born into Shanghai Adda. I have so much fun with my friends, uncles and aunties all the time. When the clock struck 12 on December 31, and the New Year began, I watched fireworks light up the sky next to the Jinji Lake in Suzhou. We all went there in a big bus, singing songs and eating chips. The next morning we all went to Ganesha Restaurant. The big boys and girls played tambola in the sun, while my friends and I simply ran around. Like every year, we celebrated Saraswati Puja, and then met for our New Year celebrations in April at Kebab on the Grill. I think Saraswati Puja is important, but since I don’t do much of studying right now, I asked my older brothers and sisters to pray and seek her blessings. Then suddenly, we began to meet very often to sing and dance – at our homes, in the consulate (I like it very much, it’s a fun place). I was surprised to know that all the songs, dances and poems were written by the same man, and he was going to be 150 years old, so we were going to have a big birthday party. Actually there were two: a smaller one near a statue of him on Nanchang Lu, and then a big one in a hall. There were so many singers and dancers, many of them whom I met for the first time! I wanted to dance too, and practiced a lot, but on that day, the big stage seemed a bit scary. My mum told me that the name of the old man whose birthday we celebrated was Rabindranath Tagore. We went back to the consulate on August 15, when Dad and several uncles and aunties sang two songs, as the Indian flag went up. I had to get up early in the morning, and wear a kurta-pajama. This year, several of my friends and their mums and dads went away. That made me sad, since I won’t see them often. But we had a few parties to say bye to them, and that was cool. Just recently, we had the biggest party: it was two days of non-stop fun. Durga Puja. We decorated Bukhara with lots of flowers, lights, colored cloth and figures of dhaakis (drum players) and paisley patterns. All of us kids helped. We had a drawing competition. I drew a big, big tiger! Then, on the last night, two very good, famous singers – Aditi and Prashant – came from India and sang many songs. As you can see, in my three years, I’ve become quite a party guy living in Shanghai – and looking forward to the biggest one of them all: the Diwali party. Bring on the fireworks! Shourya Sinha, Age 3. IA_shanghai.indd 39 Indradhanush 2011 10/20/11 4:58:56 PM THERE is no better way to bring in the New Year than with flowers, music and food. On April 16, 2011 Simply South brought the indian community together to do just that! Simply South is an affectionate nickname by which the Shanghai South Indians refer to themselves. SimplySOUTH Rings in the New Year in Shanghai The venue was the Rayfont Hotel in Xujiahui - and a large, colourful Rangoli made of flowers, meticulously arranged by the talented ladies of the community, and brightly lit traditional brass lamps greeted visitors at the entrance. Women, men and children, all dressed in their newest and finest clothes, gathered together for an evening of Vishu celebrations and delicious food. Vishu, the most auspicious day of the year for South Indians, marks the sun’s transition into the Mesha Raashi, which is the first zodiac sign, according to Indian astrological calculations. The day is, in fact, auspicious for many other communities in India as well. In Assam, for instance, the day is celebrated as Bihu, while in Punjab it is known as Baisakhi. The Bengali community celebrates it as Pohela Boishakh and in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, it is celebrated as Ugadi. While all the regional celebrations have a focus on music and specific kinds of food, Vishu celebrations are marked by the special ‘Vishu Kanni’ ritual. The idea behind this ritual is to look at an array of auspicious items as soon as one wakes up. These items usually include raw rice, bananas, golden cucumber, mirror, coins, coconut, gold and a particular kind of yellow flower, cassia fistula, known as kannikonnu .The youngsters also look forward to vishukkaineettam ( gift from elders). Shanghai’s Vishu programme featured a variety of dances, choreographed and performed by the local talents of Shanghai, including mohiniattam and kummi group dance by women. There were also karaoke performances, featuring a variety of south indian and hindi film songs. The children delighted the audience with spirited dance performances. A celebration such as this of course saw a full house. Indians from all over the city, as well as expat and Chinese friends added to the joy of the occasion by applauding the performances and enjoying the exquisite traditional banquet catered by Indian Kitchen. Although a full, traditional sadhya (feast) was difficult to arrange, the south indian community presented a menu that featured crowd favourites like prathaman, avial and pappadam. Although we were all away from our homes in India, the Simply South Vishu celebrations brought in the fragrance of home for the organizers and guests alike.
