ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA www.stleofairfax.com Dear Friends, “My children, I will be with you only a lile while longer. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Our Gospel this weekend brings us back to the Last Supper as the Lord tries to prepare His disciples for His imminent death. For St. John, the “glory” of the Lord is manifested firstly not by His glorious resurrec+on but by His death on a cross. This might seem strange to us but it makes perfect sense. The perfect and infinite love and obedience of the Son restores what was lost to the human race by the sin and disobedience of our first parents. Jesus never expressed admira+on for sin nor did He fail to admonish and call to repentance and conversion the sinners whom He loved. The sacrificial love of Jesus demonstrated in the cross is the triumph of love over sin. Jesus reconciles and forgives and brings into communion with Him and the Father with no glint of coercion but always with an invita+on which much be responded to freely, even if imperfectly at +mes. Jesus speaks clearly: “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another”. We need to aen+vely and prayerfully read the Scriptures, par+cularly the interac+ons with sinners, to understand what this means. Divine mercy is not cheap. Jesus never simply tries to make people feel good in their sin but calls them to radical change of heart and life. He never just “talks the talk” but truly “walks the walk” all the way up to Calvary and the cross. The Lord gives us a model of le0ng go of all things, even life itself, in order to bestow new and Eternal Life. We love as He loved when we live out the same mystery in our own lives. What is the Lord asking us to let go of not only for our salva+on, but for the salva+on of others? In Christ, Rev. David A. Whitestone April 24, 2016 A novena rosary to our Lady of Perpetual Help is prayed in the church every Wednesday evening at 7 pm. All are welcome. Please join us.
