ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH
FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA
www.stleofairfax.com
Dear Friends,
As we enter the final weeks of the liturgical year
and as we await the “new year” ushered in by the season
of Advent, the Church presents for our reflec#on the
reality of the Lord’s Second Coming or His return in glory at
the end of #me. We read in the Catechism of the Catholic
Church:
“Since the Ascension, God’s plan
has entered into its fulfillment. We are
already at the ‘last hour’. ‘Already the final
age of the world is with us, and the renewal
of the world is irrevocably under way; it is
even now an#cipated in a certain real way,
for the Church on earth is endowed already
with a sanc#ty that is real but imperfect.’”
“Before Christ’s second coming the
Church must pass through a final trial that
will shake the faith of many believers. The
persecu#on
that
accompanies
her
pilgrimage on earth will unveil the ‘mystery
of iniquity’ in the form of a religious
decep#on offering men an apparent
solu#on to their problems at the price of
apostasy from the truth. The supreme
religious decep#on is that of the An#christ,
a pseudo-messianism by which man
glorifies himself in place of God and of his
Messiah come in the flesh.”
“The Church will enter the glory of
the kingdom only through this final
Passover, when she will follow her Lord in
his Death and Resurrec#on. The kingdom
will be fulfilled, then, not by a historic
triumph of the Church through a
progressive ascendency, but only by God’s
victory over the final unleashing of evil,
which will cause his Bride to come down
from heaven. God’s triumph over the revolt
of evil will take the form of the Last
Judgment a7er the final cosmic upheaval of
this passing world.”
November 10, 2013
Brothers and sisters, we know neither the day nor
the hour of Christ’s return. We need not worry about such
things. We must however be prepared for it by living
mindfully each moment we have with confidence and with
purpose. For even now “in a certain way, we have already
risen with Christ. For, by virtue of the Holy Spirit, Chris#an
life is already now on earth a par#cipa#on in the death and
Resurrec#on of Christ. In expecta#on of that day, the
believer’s body and soul already par#cipate in the dignity
of belonging to Christ. This dignity entails the demand that
he should treat with respect his own body, but also the
body of every other person, especially the suffering.”
In Christ,
Rev. David A. Whitestone, Pastor
The Vocations Chalice: Have you heard about our new
endeavor to promote vocations? The Vocations
chalice is here! The chalice is being passed from
family to family for a week. The family prays the
prayer for vocations together. Then, at the end of the
week, they return it to the church on Sunday so that
it can be passed on to another family. Are you
interested in receiving the chalice in your home? For
more information, please contact the parish office
and ask to speak with Fr. Baez (703-273-5369).
ADVENT CALENDARS It's time again to stock up on
chocolate-filled Advent calendars for your family, friends,
and neighbors. What a great way to build anticipation for
Christmas -- enjoying a bit of chocolate and a Bible quote
each day! St. Leo School 8th grade will sell Advent
calendars after Masses in November to raise money for
graduation. You may also purchase a calendar to be
donated to a wounded soldier. (We will take care of the
delivery). Stop by our table outside the church. Last year
we sold out early! Questions, please call Mary Beth
Carchia: 703-352-3616. Thank you for supporting the 8th
grade class at St. Leo!

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
is a process for bringing into the Catholic Church both those
who have never been baptized and those who were baptized
in a non-Catholic church. RCIA is also the best way for adult
Catholics who have never been confirmed to prepare for the
final Sacrament of Initiation.
Every September, a new RCIA class begins at St. Leo the
Great and we invite any adult who would like to join the
Catholic Church, be confirmed, or who is simply interested in
learning about the teachings and customs of Catholic
Christianity to come and join us. While classroom work is part
of the process, RCIA is more than a class; it is a gradual
introduction to the customs, beliefs, practices, and devotions
of Catholicism. There is no obligation, only an opportunity to
learn!
RCIA meets on Tuesdays from 7:30pm - 9:00pm in the
Guadalupe Room.
