His name is Normand (Norm) Cote. He grew up in Kailua and now lives with his wife, Rebecca, and son, Branden in Kaneohe. Norm comes from a food and beverage background of working in the military officer’s club organization in Hawaii and Japan. He also has waterfront experience as he is currently working at the Marina at MCBH. We will have Welcome Reception for members to meet Norm that will be schedule in late May or early June. I want to thank the members of the selection committee (Tom Pochereva, Tom Wood, Frederic Berg, Greg LeLesch, Chuck Cotton, and Rick Osborne) for their diligence and hard work though out this selection process. The first week of May starts off with back to back events. Cinco de Mayo falls on a Thursday so the Galley will provide Mexican specials along with the regular menu. The bar will feature special prices on Mexican beers, margaritas on the rocks, and tequila shots. Before racing on Thursday stop by the bar to quench your thirst. The next day is First Friday music and we have Harry Koizumi playing at 6:30 PM. We are also planning another Friday night music event on May 20 featuring Brant Swigart. The second Sunday May 8 is Mother’s Day and we have a great Mother’s Day Brunch planned in the Long House. The brunch features an Omelet Bar, Hot Items, and a Carving Station featuring Prime Rib and New York Strip Steak. Please make reservations now as it is filling up fast. The Lipton Cup One Offshore Challenge was held on April 23-24 off Waikiki. Waikiki Yacht Club is the defending champion and the KYC challenge came from Trois Ami and Frederic Berg. The trade winds were back with gusts of 25 – 30 MPH which created some very interested sailing conditions. Although WYC retained the Cup, Frederic and crew deserves a lot of credit as they sailed great races and put in a gallant effort – see Frederic’s article for more details. Sail fast and stay safe Vice Commodore Tom Wood Aloha all. The month of April is now behind us and the racing season is in full swing. With the improving weather and longer days we see more recreational powerboat activity as well as sailing on the Bay and increasing amounts of people out and about at the club. This is of course great to see – that is after all what its for. First Friday for May will be on the 6th just in time for a post Cinco de Mayo celebration so come on down and join the fun. The Lipton Cup Challenge was held over the weekend of the 23rd and Rear Commodore Frederic Berg skippered the KYC entry. While he came in second overall, he was the only one that managed to beat the first place boat in any race. A well sailed regatta by Frederic and crew. Congratulations to you all. As we approach summer it is time to start thinking about safety all around, so here’s some safety highlights to get you in the mindset: 1. Keep an eye on the keiki, especially around the pool or open water. Remember life jackets are required to be worn onboard boats for the kids under 13. 2. Be extra careful in the pool when there is no lifeguard present. 3. Do not swim in the marina. 4. Take time to review your safety gear onboard, that’s PFDs, First Aid kits, Flares, etc. 5. Think ahead for Hurricane Season, review your food, water, and other safety items at home and have a plan for securing your vessel if a storm approaches. 6. Now is also a great time to review your insurance coverage – and for those storing their boats at the club, please provide a copy of your boat coverage to the Office. For those in wet moorings, please take time to review your mooring lines and the tiedown eyes on the piers. If there are issues with any of your tie down points, please let the office know so those issues can be corrected as soon as possible. We can all hope that we have an uneventful year, but early preparation can greatly lessen the damage to your boat, other boats, and the club’s facilities should we be unlucky. Stay safe whether at the club or on the water. Rear Commodore Frederic Berg April is behind us and what a month it was. The Pasha Hawaii 2016 International Fourteen Pacific Rim Championship Regatta was hosted at Kaneohe Yacht Club from April 2nd to 5th. The children enjoyed sailing on the I 14s on Sunday and there were several local teams participating. Thanks to Andy Bates and his crew of volunteers and sponsors for a great event. KYC appreciates the recognition we get from around the Pacific Basin when we put on such great events. Andy Bates is also behind the recent activity you see Friday nights as the adults and children battle it out in El Toros, Bics, Toppers, 420s, FJs and Lasers. Andy has converted Friday nights to an all out dinghy fest. Up and coming sailors are definitely to be found in this group. The Bulkhead races are building as the summer sun wanes ever later in the day. The courses are getting longer and the competition is heating up. Thanks to Sime and John for taking on the finishing duties and of course Bill Riddle for his long and continued dedication to getting start times and ensuring the races go off without a hitch. And then there was Lipton Cup. What can I say, the defender has won every Lipton Cup race (not just the series but every race) for the past four years, except one which the KYC challenger won. This year saw winds from 10 to 25 knots and the results didnʻt change. Kaneohe Yacht Club put together an excellent challenge with a great team and got second, but as the Queen of England was once told, “there is no second”. We should thank the crew onboard the KYC challenger: Steve Valentin, bow; Garret Venama, mast; Randy Reed, halyards and crew chief; Daniel Hull, trimmer; Phillip Katzman, trimmer; Raoul Magana, tactitian; and yours truly bringing up the rear, as usual. It is truly an honor to represent Kaneohe Yacht Club. Where ever we go we get accolades for the way KYC supports our sport. There are several seminars coming up that are great opportunities to improve your understanding of sailboat racing and a way to give back to the sport. First up is the Club Judge Seminar April 30th. Hawaii is in deep need of judges after loosing three in the last several years. Following on May 1st and 2nd is the Advanced Judge Seminar. For the many of you who have been and continue to volunteer for Race Committee duty, please consider the Race Management Seminar on May 21st and finally to get caught up on the Racing Rules of Sailing, consider the June 3rd Racing Rules Seminar. Check elsewhere for location and times. Thanks goes out to our Staff Commodore, Tom Pochereva for organizing and putting on these Seminars. 3 Junior Commodore Malia Johnson An Invitation to all KYC Members: The KYC Fishing Fleet will be having a Membership Drive Meeting on May 6th open to all KYC Members. We wanted to dispel the rumors that it required an "invitation only" to join the most fun filled fleet at KYC:). You could be asking yourself why the Fishing Fleet? Well I'd be glad to answer that for you. Firstly, we adhered to our Four F's of the Fishing Fleet Charter Fellowship, Fun, Food and Fishing!!! Secondly, you do not have to be a fisher person or a stinkpotter to join. We have many members who are from all of the different fleets even the Sailing Fleets and Tennis Fleets. Thirdly, we have the most fun, from our Sand Bar Parties, our Monthly Pot Luck Meeting, our major involvement in the American Cancer Association's Relay for Life Fundraising Party not to mention that we are the number one Fundraiser for the Relay Event,to our annual Steak n Crab Fest at the end of our season. So what is so special about this year in the Fishing Fleet, everyone is invited and we will be selling our famous Fishing Fleet T's for men and women at the meeting in May. If you are a new member this is great way to meet, participate, and have a ton of fun at your club. It is also a good way to get some fresh fish from the boats. Oh yes I almost forgot we have six fleet Fishing Tournaments from May to October. You can fish any day in the month to qualify your fish. You can contact me regarding the rules. We have a $500,00 Biggest Fish of the year contest and we award the most sought after title of Fisherman of the Year Trophy. If you are interested in attending our May Kick Off please reply to Atherpac@aol.com. It would be appreciated but not required. I look forward to seeing you all on May 6th. When: Friday May 6th @ 6:00PM Where: Upper Deck Food: Free Pizza Membership Dues: Single: $35.00 Hanapa'a Captain Bullfish 4 Family: $45.00 Aloha, A big thank you goes out to the Pac Rim I-14 sailors who ran the Junior Clinic on April 2. Over a dozen kids from all over the island were invited to participate and got to sail the I-14s. Now we’re hooked! We would like to do more of this kind of sailing and really enjoyed learning about the boats. If anyone has room for a junior on their boat please let us know! Thanks also to Andy Bates for organizing the event, we loved it! April 29 was our first Movie Night and it was a great success. 18 kids came to the Upper Deck to watch “Minions: Go Back to the Beginning.” Don’t forget to bring a pillow and blanket next time and also to help clean up after the movie is over. Our next Movie Night is Friday May 27. We’ll be showing “Home”. Here’s a brief summary: After a hive-minded alien race called the Boov conquer the Earth, they relocate the planet's human population -- all except for a little girl named Tip, who's managed to hide from the aliens, this movie is rated PG and it’s 1:34 minutes long. Movie starts at 7:00 pm. For those of you who haven't yet signed up for Sail Camp you better hurry because it’s just around the corner on the weekend of May 14 and 15. Once again Sail Camp is going to be an amazing experience with tents, sailing, games and all types of fun. I hope to see every junior there! Stay safe and sail fast! Photo: Kai Andrade PAC RIM Summary The Pasha Hawaii 2016 International Fourteen Pacific Rim Championship Regatta was hosted at Kaneohe Yacht Club from April 2nd to 5th. The event had three sponsors, Pasha Hawaii a local community and environmentally aware ocean transportation company, Hawaiian Fine Furniture who provided beautiful hand carved Koa wood half-models for trophies, and the Global Sports Alliance (gsa.org) who sponsored the Ecoflag program that promotes clean air and clean water through sporting events worldwide, primarily aimed at young people doing sporting activities. GSA has sponsored the event since 2006. This year’s event included sailors from Japan, Australia, England, Italy, and Canada. Most of them chartered local boats to augment the two containers that Pasha Hawaii sponsored enabling boats from California to participate. Youth Skiff Sail Training PASHA Hawaii 2016 I-14 Pac Rim sailors collaborate with our sponsors to host a youth sail training component. This year it was bigger than ever. Pasha Hawaii arranged for two television spots with youth interviews on KITV news. The first one was a week before the event and was a live TV interview with Kaneohe YC youth sailors Kiana and Kahea Heitzman. The second interview took place at KYC during the sail training with participants. There was also a half-page article in MidWeek prior to the regatta. This statewide exposure of youth sailing, and sailboat racing in general made it possible for the public to come out and see the competition as well as join in the training event. Our sponsor Pasha Hawaii and Laurie Lagrange’s efforts brought more interest to the sport of sailing. The skiff training ashore and I-14 rides on the bay occurred on a beautiful Sunday morning. The wind was a steady 12 knots. Youth sailors from three Yacht Clubs across the island of Oahu participated. Photographers took photos from the float boat as the young sailors switched in and out crewing with the racers aboard some of the newest I-14 boats competing in the world. PAC RIM Racing Clark Fremgen facilitated running the races over 3 days, in his usual flawless manner. This was his 7th time as Principal Race Officer (PRO) for the event. His team of KYC volunteers did a tremendous job setting courses in a shifting breeze during the first two days of sailing. The racing started and finished as scheduled and all eight races were completed as planned. Volunteers included float boat drivers Mark Logan, Fuzz Foster, and Charlie Stone with KYC and visitor crews each day. Jenny Vickery from Australia and local boatman Rick Pelton supported “Clarky” on the RC boat. Maureen Bates was the windward mark set boat with visitor, and former 14er Eric Arens. Thanks to the Judge team led by WYC sailor Joseph Shacat that included Michael Roth, Steve Thomas and Rich Macready. Former World Champion Kris Bundy and his long time crew Fritz Lanzinger dominated this year’s competitive fleet of 21 boats with three firsts, three seconds, and two fourths. There were no throw out races in this event. Terry Gleeson and Evan Sjostedt placed second. Terry is the current USA I-14 President and reigning National Champion. Long time 14ers Steve Goodson and Alan Diercks from Seattle were third, with only one point separating them from second place. They are the current North American champions. Joe Bercsh and Canadian Leith Shenstone were one point back in fourth place and Chris Rutz and Michael Radziejowski from the Bay Area placed fifth. The racing was very close and one shift or dying breeze would change the results for places 2, 3, and 4. The racing at the top of this fleet was very close and competitive right up to the last run home in the last race. Inside the racing fleet three separate competitions were taking place at the same time. Nine boats competed for the I-14 ‘Classic” trophy which is for boats designed prior to 2003. All of the local Hawaii fleet fits that category. Stewart Vickery, from Australia, sailing with his daughter Freya won the event convincingly in a Bieker 3 design. Dominic Van Essen from England and Simona Saccani from Italy finished second. Local youth sailor Lars Von Sydow, sailing with his father Harold finished third. In the female division there were seven competitors. Freya Vickery won with Simona Saccani second and local KYC and UH sailor Maddy Kennedy third. The final division was determined by age. There were six sailors over 60 years of age still competitively racing the I-14 (they may need their heads examined). This is known as the “Old Farts” division. Long time I-14 sailor from Santa Barbara, CA, Ron Boehm with crew JV Gilmour won this division. Stewart Vickery was second and local sailor Andy Bates was third. Special note: Alan Laflin returned after retiring last year to sail with Paul Disario who started sailing I14’s in the early 1960’s. They are both in their 70’s and finished all but one race!!!! The awards banquet featured young fire dancers and Hula dancers from Palama Settlement’s youth program. These young performers did an amazing job of “safely” entertaining the crowd. The performers ranged in age from 4 to 15 years old. This year’s entries from overseas competitors provided sufficient funds from charting local boats to support a full scholarship to the KYC Youth sailing program this summer. Mahalo to our competitors for their generosity. Hawaii State Championships An annual long distance race starting from the KYC bulkhead was held on the last day of the event with 16 boats. The pursuit race starting sequence is based on the scores from the PAC RIM. It is not counted in the PAC RIM series. There is also an award for the fastest elapsed time for this race. The fleet started at 11:00AM, in a building 10-14 knot breeze from the north. The course included club marks F, A, Coconut Island to port, F, Sampan Channel out to R2 to port, back through the Sampan gate and finish at the club line outside the harbor. The fleet got off without incident, the winners of the PAC RIM left the bulkhead at 11:26AM. Local sailors Tom Pochereva and Yovo Stefanov led for the first half of the race until they had a “swim” near R2. Chris Rutz and Michael Radziejowski took the lead only to be passed half way down the channel leg by Steve Schumaker and Channing Hamlet who also capsized while jibing at the end of the channel. Rutz and Radziejowski regained the lead and held it the rest of the way back to the finish to win the race and finish 5th overall in elapsed time. Goodson and Diercks were a close second finishing 2nd in elapsed time, and Ron (Old Fart) Boehm finished third sailing with JV Gilmour. Terry Gleeson sailing with Fritz Lanzinger were the fastest elapsed time sailing the entire course in 1hr:10 min:55 sec. Almost all of the fleet sailed the entire second half of the race from R2 to the Red and Green entrance marks with their kites up. It was a very fast and exciting race! This was the ninth running of this unique sailing event that features youth advanced skiff training and environmental awareness. The entire KYC staff, caterers, club volunteers, youth from Palama Settlement, and sponsors made this the best PAC RIM ever. The Hawaii I-14 fleet “Thanks” all of you for being gracious, kind, and professional hosts in the Aloha spirit we cherish. 7 Andy Bates and Maddy Kennedy Michael Pacholski and Satoshi Ishida Elise Leroux and Kevin Rogers Lars and Harold Von Sydow Tom Pochereva and Vovo Stefanov PASHA HAWAII PAC RIM I-14 CHAMPIONSHIP Kaneohe Yacht Club - Kaneohe, Hawaii APRIL 1 THRU 4 2016 Sail NumBoat name 8 USA 1189 USA 1187 USA 1159 USA 1194 USA 1162 USA 1192 AUS 672 USA 1177 USA 1160 USA 1164 USA 1153 USA 1170 USA 1183 USA 1167 USA 1104 USA 1144 USA 1088 USA 1195 USA 1106 USA 1115 GER Skipper Crew Race 1 Race 2 Race 3 Race 4 Race 5 Race 6 Race 7 SS MINNOW KRIS BUNDY FRITZ LANZINGER 1 1 4 2 2 4 2 MORNING STAR TERRY GLEESON EVAN SJOSTEDT 3 4 7 1 5 1 1 USA1159 STEVE GOODSON ALAN DIERCKS 2 6 3 4 4 3 3 HOPEFULLY 14 JOE BERSCH LEITH SHENSTONE 4 3 1 5 1 5 6 ERIS CHRIS RUTZ MICHAEL RADZIEJOWSKI 7 5 5 7 3 6 7 B6H2 KRIS HENDERSON MARTT PISTAY DNS(22) 2 2 3 7 2 4 ATOMIC PUNK KIRK TWARDOWSHI MICHAEL LAZZARO 5 7 6 9 6 8 5 SWEET JANE RON BOEHM J.V. There were 20 players and the playing went from 8:30 all the way ‘til 1:30. There were some great matches like the one with Keegan and Rob playing Aaron and Bob Babyack…….it ended up in a tie at 4-4 with some hard playing on both sides. At the end there was a 3 way tie for men’s first place with the winners being Bob Babyack, Greg Siok, and Bob Yoder. Winning for the women was Linnea Brooks in 1st place, Donlei Darnell in 2nd and Jean Fernie in 3rd. The theme for the potluck was Mexican and with several sombreros and other colorful accessories, the mood and the food were great……as always. Other players were Terry Beuret, Steve Brooks, Betsy Denzer, Keegan Giles, JoAnn Goebert, Sime Gross, Rich Heaton, Wayne Jackson, Lynn Pease, Aaron and Sherri Phillips, Rob Rietow, Cindy Siok, Fran Tannen…….a great turnout. Planning has already started on next months’ catered dinner to be held after the Tom Collins ‘Big Time’ Tournament on May14th. This will be teams of men and teams of women who will remain a team in a double elimination format. Get your partner soon or your choice may be taken!!! The menu will be announced soon and sign up information will follow. Did you know that besides the weekend informal round robins held 8-11 Saturday and Sunday, that there are players who show up every Friday, late afternoon, and play short quick games. Players jump in on a first-come first-serve basis, until it’s too dark to see. Everyone gets to play because of the quick change over. Come on down and try it!!!! A big round of applause is sent to Rob Rietow for continuing to maintain the courts and he has also added the landscape around the courts to his workload Last tournament you could find Rob weeding between his matches! I know that such dedication is appreciated but it would be nice to give Rob a pat on the back and let him know you notice. Due to a failed computer you will find all the photos on the bulletin board, thanks to Kit Beuret for printing them out. FINISH LINE WATCH STANDERS NEEDED Have you ever been up to Kansas Tower on MCBH? The view is absolutely spectacular! Here’s an opportunity to participate with the Finish Line Committee up at Kansas Tower to watch the Pacific Cup racing yachts cross the finish line at sunrise, sunset or during the day. Two-man teams stand 4 or 6-hour watches, starting when the first finisher is expected on July 21st until the last yacht crosses the line, not later than Friday, 7/29. Attention New Members! Here’s a chance to get involved with the club and meet new friends! We will have a couple of training sessions and provide you with all the information you need; you’ll decide when you can stand watch.
