I want to thank all the
members who attended the
continuation
of
the
General
Membership
Meeting on February 5 to
vote for the 5% dues
increase. For those who
were unable to attend we
received a quorum and the
5% dues increase was approved to start on April 1.
I want to ensure all members that the Board and
Dwayne will continue to look for ways to reduce
costs as we have already experienced some cost
increases due to inflation.
First Friday Music will continue very month
until November so be on the lookout for what
musician will be playing each month. Roselle
Nottage has some great entertainment lined up this
year for First Friday Music nights. See you on
March 4.
The “Go Live” date for our PV Solar project
has run into another delay. HECO has
recommended a couple of changes before they
approve our project so our solar vendor, Bonterra,
has had to make these changes to the system. Some
additional wiring will be implemented this week
and we hope to have HECO’s approval the first
week of March. We will keep the membership up
to date by sending out a blast e-mail once we
receive HECO approval to go live.
The Club Manager selection committee has
reviewed all of the resumes we received and we are
now down to a short list of four candidates. We are
conducting more second round interviews and
continue to make great progress. Our goal is still to
have a new club manager on staff by the end of
March. We will keep the membership up to date by
sending out a blast e-mail once we have selected a
new Club Manager.
Now that the Sail Boat Race season has
started, Sail Fast and Safe and please remember to
show respect and the Aloha spirit to all guests,
visitors, fellow members and employees.

ago we were recovering
from high wind and
wave effects that left the
Marine Corps Base
Marina badly damaged
and
caused
some
damage to our docks as
well. We have been lucky so far this year in terms
of winter storms, and we can certainly hope that
the weather continues to be benevolent and also
good for racing, but you never know. If you haven’t
checked your lines and fenders lately, now would
be a good time to do so in preparation for hurricane
season in a few months.
February saw the start of First Friday as well
as more significant racing activity, the completion
of annual haul-out activities, and the Cruising Fleet
made it to Molokai as well – overall a good month.
Our new Part Captain is building on the great
efforts of his predecessor with the support of the
Mooring Committee. I ask that if you are currently
on a waitlist you stop by the Club and ensure that
the contact information on file is accurate to enable
the Port Captain to reach you, both in case of
emergency or in the happy event that a spot
becomes available.
Stay safe, watch out for each other, and I hope
to see you all at the Club or on the water.

Aloha,
This time last year,
the marina on the Marine
Base was badly damaged
and as a result, our
insurance rates for the
piers went up. The rest of
the year wasn’t much
better with several hurricanes threatening and four
active hurricanes in the Pacific Basin at one time.
Our hearts go out to our friends in Fiji who just got
slammed with their strongest cyclone on record. We
need to be vigilant as the times they are a changing.
Coming up in March we start off with the
SOLD OUT Safety at Sea Seminar on March 5. If
you're like me you've postponed signing up and you
may be justifying not attending at all. BIG
MISTAKE!! We have a once in a decade
opportunity to take a safety at sea class right here on
Oahu rather than flying out to the west coast for
training. This is required for anyone contemplating
Pac Cup and Transpac as well as it should be
required for those of us crossing channels. Someone
far more experienced than I once said that as soon as
you enter a Hawaiian channel you might as well be
going to Tahiti. You would be lucky to land in Tahiti
if anything ever happened to you as drifting in the
Pacific can last a while before you hit something.
As the Coast Guard likes to say, “learn to take the
search out of search and rescue”. This course will
help those who are attending.
On March 12 we have the New Comers Pupu
Party. For this event we are asking each fleet to send
a representative ready to speak to any our our newest
members about their fleet, it’s activities,
opportunities to join, volunteer and any other
bragging you feel compelled to do. It’s a great
opportunity for the fleets and the new members. I
can say from my time on the Membership
Committee, these are some of our most enthusiastic
and energetic members.
The first joint Club/Fleet Ops meeting lasted
one hour and fifteen minutes and it’s been renamed
the Ops Mtg, for short, just like the meeting itself.
Lots of great coordinating happened and little time
was spent dwelling on the past, all forward looking.
Thanks everyone for attending and your focus.
Thank you to all the Race Committee
volunteers who have stepped forward to manage the
IRF and Classboat races. Without you we would not
be able to have these wonderful races on the bay.

We are looking for more sailing kids for Spring
classes! If you can only make some morning classes
and some afternoons we are flexible. We also are
changing the names of our classes this summer and
will be more flexible in sailing the types of boats that
the kids want to sail! We now have Toppers, 8 new
boats being shipped as we speak! Open Bics are fun
introductory boats to transition into single handed
sailing. They can be used in the morning El Toro or afternoon Introduction to
Racing Class. We will be calling the classes just morning and afternoon racing
classes and let the class use the boats they want to train in. Some want to train
in Toppers or FJs for High School sailing, others in El Toros or Lasers to get
ready for HYSA regattas and others in 420s to practice spinnaker and trapeze
work. The intro to racing class may be called the "intro to single handed
sailing". This will be taught in Toppers, Bics and El Toros depending again on
wind strength and personal boat preference. We have a variety of boats at KYC
now and want to utilize them!
So if you were not wanting to sign up for class because of a morning or
afternoon conflict let us know, we can accommodate kids in other classes since
we are not filled up! Summertime the classes are much more full. So this is a
great opportunity to get more one-on-one time with the instructors and the Junior

Hi – I’m Mike Barker, your new Port Captain. I
look forward to meeting those of you I don’t already
know and working together to keep our yacht club
boating smooth and safe.
Directly helping me will be Neil Morgan, my
deputy to assist and step in in my absence, Ike
Eichelberger in charge of dry storage, and other
Mooring Committee members, Rick Osborne, Bob
Hurd and Wayne Reis, to observe and assist as needed.
The first order of business is to take care of filling the dry storage slips and
removing boats not meeting movement requirements. We will then move on to
the wet slips to assure proper equipment is in place and movement requirements
are also being met.
In assuming my new position, I reviewed the mooring rules and realize
some boaters may not be as aware of our mooring regulations as they should be.
I would like to highlight a few rules that will be our prime focus:
 Unattended boats left at the bulkhead for more than two hours must
have my permission to stay or be assigned to a temporary mooring. You may
contact me at 554-8984.
 All boats, whether in wet or dry slips, are required to move twice each
quarter. The Mooring Committee will contact those not meeting this requirement
to schedule a time for you to move your boat with a mooring representative
present.
Your help and cooperation is appreciated. Just a heads up, I will be out of
the country March 15-29. You will need to contact Neil Morgan at 927-3951 for
all port captain needs.

Friday Night sailing starts April Fool’s Day
The Club Thanks Joan Wollenbecker for many years of service running
the El Toro races on Friday nights at the club. She and her husband have been
transferred to Germany and she will be leaving this spring. She has graciously
agreed to help with the turn-over of duties on April 1----So come on down and
wish her well as she runs her last Friday night race.
There will be some changes this year. We will be adding 420/FJ fleet and
a Laser fleet to the mix. There will be harbor starts and finishes with varying
courses for the larger and smaller boats.
Come out and join the fun as we kick-off a new season and say Mahalo to
Joan on April 1.

his month, Kaneohe Yacht Club proudly
hosted the Wounded Warrior Sailing Program,
focused on introducing disabled military members
and veterans to the sport of sailing. In this two day event,
participants from all over the country received individualized instruction tailored
to their needs and abilities. Coaches including KYC's very own Luke Kudray,
modified the boats and lessons to accommodate each participants’ unique
physical and emotional needs in the hope that participants will leave this
experience to pursue the sport of sailing. Mahalo to all the member volunteers
who donated their time and especially to the CAL 20 fleet who generously
donated their finely tuned racing machines for this inspiring event. The
conditions obliged, we had two great days of sailing, and I can’t think of a better
venue in which to foster interest in yachting or a group more deserving of the
club's support.
BURGEE SWAP
Anyone who visited KYC over the last week or so could not help but notice the
beautiful visting yacht moored out int he bay and/or on the bulkhead. Rear
Commodore, Frederic Berg, shared a moment with our German yacht visitors
wishing to swap a burgee from their FSD (Freier Sportverein Dortmund) Sailing
Department while enjoying KYC. Their 50‘ vessel “Zero“ was designed by famous
naval architect William Garden.
Germany is a long way from Kaneohe Yacht Club but that hasn’t stopped
Christian and Rebecca from dreaming big...their long story short:
We’re a young couple who bought and refitted a 1974 build sailboat to sail
the world. Beginning our adventures in Mexico we cruised the Sea of Cortez
before we crossed the Pacific Ocean from Cabo San Lucas Mexico to Hilo
Hawaii in May 2015. Since we arrived in Hilo after 20 days and 2.667 nautical
miles of open ocean in early June we are cruising back and forth between the
beautiful Hawaiian Islands. We arrived in Kaneohe a couple of days ago and we
will prepare our ZERO to do the 2.500 nm passage from Kauai to Dutch Harbor
in Alaska in Spring this Year.
We decided to share our stories on our webpage www.sy-ZERO.de and on
our YouTube channel. There you’ll find HD Videos about our adventures and
plenty of pictures and background information about us and our floating home

INTERNATIONAL FOURTEEN
PACIFIC RIM CHAMPIONSHIPS
The ninth running of the PAC RIM I-14 race has a new sponsor; Pasha
Hawaii. Pasha Hawaii is a domestic shipping company that has a great interest
in supporting Junior sailing in Hawaii and the environment. They are working
with the regatta organizers to get the top skiff sailors around the world to come
to Kaneohe Yacht Club April 2 to 5. This event is made possible by their
support.
We already have confirmation from teams from Italy, Britain, Canada,
Australia, and Japan. The local fleet is gearing up for a great event. Clark
Fremgen has again agreed to be our PRO. We anticipate 24 boats. The Junior sail
training for skiffs will be taught by former World and National Champions.
Weather permitting, on Sunday April 3 the top competitors will be providing
rides on the bay for Junior sailors following the training ashore. We will also be
discussing the recent Ocean Cleanup project and the importance of clean air
and clean water.
The Awards Banquet will be held in the Long House on April 4. The
entertainment following the dinner will be local young Hawaiian dance students
and Fire Dancers on the lawn in front of the club. It should start at 7:30PM.
Members are welcome to come watch the show, see the racing skiffs, and meet
the competitors. The racing starts in the early afternoon and will finish by 4PM.
Come down and see the activities and enjoy the sailing regatta!
The Cal 20 Fleet has continued to grow over the last few
years, with around fifteen boats actively participating in racing. Most of the
boats in the fleet are several decades old; as such, they require year-round
maintenance to keep them active. Most recently, several boat owners have
been investing their time and resources into completely overhauling their Cal
20s during the off-season. They’ve had their hulls and decks repainted, and
replaced most rigging. If you have the time, I recommend taking a walk
through the slips and checking out the beautiful paint jobs!
With the 2016 season underway, we’ve already completed two regattas.
So far, the winds haven’t quite settled in this year – Classboat A (2/6/16) was
completed in light winds ranging from 0 to 5 knots, coming anywhere from
the south to the west. Most of the day was spent drifting around the course.
In the end, after some difficult racing, Lucky Bucket (sailed by Andrew
Meade, Kerri Schweibert, and Craig Shifferns) took first place.
While the wind directions were similar for Classboat B (2/21/16), the
wind speed ranged anywhere from 0 to 20-25 knots. One minute, you were
drifting….the next, bracing for a 20 knot gust rushing down from the
mountains. Needless to say, it made for tough racing and inconsistent
finishes. Luka (sailed by Marc Barra and Tanner Marsh) had the most
consistent racing of the day in the crazy winds, and took first place. Congrats
to both boats on their victories.
So far, the season has been off to a great start. Our next two regattas are
on March 6 and March 13, with the March 13 date being the Wahine

KYC Annual Blood Drive
Saturday, March 26
Once again, the tennis fleet is sponsoring our annual Blood
Drive. The Bloodmobile will be here, adjacent to the tennis court
on Saturday, March 26. Appointments are open from 9am to
2pm. We will be taking signups on Thursday evenings and
Sunday mornings in Ma Shultz’s lounge. You may also sign up
by calling Jean Fernie at 262-9130 or by e-mail at
ferniej002@hawaii.rr.com. Last year we went over our goal of
35 pints by 1!! That means a total of 72 lives may have been
saved by your generosity. Please help us again this year. Donors

MOLOKAI CRUISE
Saturday, February 13 the KYC Cruising Fleet set sail for Molokai and
returned Monday, February 15, a good time was had by all. The boats that sailed
were: Ho’onanea- David Brown, Pili Aloha- Rick Villalobos, Substantial VesselMick Meierdiercks, Gingerbreadman- Wayne Millar, Kolonahe- Don Brown
Kanahele- Wayne Reis and Seeker- Waikiki. There was a fishing contest of

An Oscar for a Night
Academy Awards was the theme for the February
Potluck with the menu all Italian. Lasagna, pasta, salads
and bread were the mainstay of the potluck with many
wonderful desserts to finish off the meal.
With the Academy Awards theme everyone was
encouraged to dress to the nines, with a prize for best
dressed, and using the wonderful cutouts of Oscar we got
several great shots of our formally dressed attendees. The
cutouts belong to Lynn Pease, who was in charge of
decorating and she used gold, white and candles on each
table.
The tournament was a little different this month with
two teams created with the 20 players. First team was The
Mid-Court Crisis with Keegan Giles, Greg Siok, John
Gross, Bob Babyack, Richard Leclerc, Sime Gross, Cindy
Siok, Laura Meyers, Donlei Darnell and Dana Nottage.
Second team was The Backhanded Compliments with
Rob Rietow, Aaron Phillips, Kit Beuret, Bob Yoder, Bob
Meierdiercks, Liz Meierdiercks, Sherri Phillips, Betsy
Denzer, Susie Jannuzzi and Lynn Pease.
Although awards were given using individual points
earned in the round robin format, the team scores were
announced too, with the winning team being Mid-Court
Crisis Team! The winner for the men was second - Bob
Babyack and first Place was Greg Siok. There was a tie
for second Place for women with Suzie Jannuzzi and
Sherri Phillips playing super games. The winner for
women in February was Sime Gross. It was a lot of fun
and ran very smoothly after we got the courts dry.
Winning the Best Dressed Award was Betsy Denzer
with a stunning long red gown with great décolleté. Ann
Ayling and Terry Beuret wore tiaras and Dave Ayling
wore his tux jacket on top and shorts to accompany it.
The Tennis Fleet is open to all KYC members and
although we encourage members to get on the courts if
they have played tennis before or arrange for some lessons
and join us when they are comfortable, playing tennis is
not a required talent!!! We have fun round robin
tournaments most months of the year with great potluck
dinners following.
Every weekend and holiday morning, starting at 8:30
there is walk-on tennis for several hours. You will find
all levels of tennis and we encourage all KYC members
and guests to join in this very casual relaxed atmosphere.
Tennis is a game for the ages…….you will never regret
learning to play …….it will stay with you all your life.

SPRING 2016 KYC JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM
KYC's 2016 Spring Junior Sailing Classes are held every
Saturday from February 20th through May 14th. This Spring we
have expanded our classes from 11 to 13 weeks. We will be
starting one week earlier and are keeping the prices very
affordable at $5 to $7 an hour per student. Whether or not a
student was enrolled in the Summer Program or some other
session, take this opportunity to participate in our Spring Junior
Sailing Program!
As a primary benefit, the Spring classes are normally a
smaller class size so students can take advantage of a better
instructor to student ratio. Students in the Topper class will also
have more opportunities to sail by themselves and accelerate up
into other classes at a faster pace. These classes focus on
safety, fun and sailing skill building. In addition to regularly
scheduled classes, the program offers participation in local
regattas, Friday night El Toro races, and Sunday Laser and 420
Races.
Spring Sailing Program Schedule
Novice Topper Sailing - This is a Learn-To-Sail class for
students aged 8 to 18. If a student has little to no sailing
experience or has taken a few years ashore and wants to
rediscover sailing, this is the class. Classes are primarily taught
in Toppers, our beginning sailboat. Boats are provided for all
students enrolled in this class. Curriculum will include the basics
of sailing, including parts of the boat, points of sail, and boat
handling. The goal of this course is to have fun in a safe and
educational atmosphere.
Classes will be held on Saturday, 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
Introduction to Racing- This is for the sailor who understands
the basic fundamentals of sailing including, rigging, points of sail,
docking and terminology. Sailors must be competent in capsize
recovery and be able to sail a boat by themselves. Curriculum
will focus on performance dinghy handling in El Toros and 420s
and will introduce racing skills. The goal of this class is to
improve sailing skills and to gain a basic understanding of
sailboat racing and tactics.
Classes will be held on Saturday from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
Morning and Afternoon Racing Class- No messing around!!
Junior Sailors interested in more advanced levels of sailing
including racing, tactics, boat handling, and boat maintenance,
should enroll in this class. Students who participate in this class
will work closely with students of all ages to improve
sportsmanship, leadership and sailing competence. This class
will require more time and effort on the part of the sailor and will
require attendance at local regattas.
El Toro classes will be held from 9:30am to 12:30pm.
Laser and 420 Classes will be from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
Special Notes for Racing Class Students: There are additional
fees for regattas usually around $10.00. Parent participation is
appreciated to help with loading and unloading of the trailers and
transportation of sailors to and from the regatta sites.
Costs
Junior Spring Sailing Class tuition will be $270 for Members
and $320 for Non-members for all classes. Tuition for students
registering for both Saturday morning and afternoon classes will
be $480 for Members and $565 for Non-members.
A 10% discount is applied to students using their own boat
and for sibling signing up at the same time. No refunds will be
available for missed classes.
Partial scholarships may be available. Please contact the

Registration and packets will be handled through the KYC
Office. All appropriate registration and release forms along with
full payment must be completed in order to guarantee a place in
the class.

Sunday Class Boat Racing- On scheduled Sundays throughout
the Spring,420s and Lasers are welcome to race in the KYC

races a day around the harbor buoys. There is no entry fee for
the series but to use one of KYC's 420s, a reservation must be
made for the boat through the KYC Office.
Adult Sailing Class- The class will be from 9:00 - noon on four
consecutive Saturdays, January 9,16, 23, 30, 2016.

Last fall our Mega Expedition story was told in two Telltales articles. The
first article in September described the plan to map the Great Pacific Garbage
Patch following the TRANSPAC race. About thirty ocean racers participated
during the return delivery. The second article appeared in the October issue of
Telltales describing the delivery and sample collection process that we
completed from Adrenalin (Santa Cruz 50) as we sailed her back to Richmond
YC in SF Bay. The boat is home-ported during the winter months on the west
coast. The samples we collected on the far northwestern edge of the Garbage
Patch were kept frozen on our boat and sent by FEDEX to Holland for analysis.
The preliminary findings were worse than estimated. The density of the
plastics under the surface and volume at the northern edges was far greater than
the scientists originally calculated. The amount of surface debris and fish netting
that we documented was also far greater than was originally estimated. Boyan
Slat, the young Dutch leader of the Ocean Cleanup project has taken the data to
Japan and collaborated with the Japanese government to build a 1.2 mile long
floating boom, the longest structure ever put in to the ocean, off the island of
Tsushima. If this pilot project can remove the garbage in a cost-effective manner
plans are being drawn up to put a 100 kilometer boom in the Pacific Garbage
Patch by 2020. The immediate requirements are urgent. The longer action is
delayed, the more ocean plastic slips beyond the reach of even a project as
ambitious as the Ocean Cleanup. Stopping countries from dumping while at
the same time working to cleanup the damage that is affecting our food chain
already is critical. The invisible poisoning has started. Already Scientists know
that plastic particles are turning up in mussels and oysters harvested
commercially. The time for action is yesterday!!!!!
