DTE’S MESSAGE
I am extremely happy to know that RIT is
bringing out its first edition of newsletter and
this is going to be an ongoing process
portraying the various academic as well as
non academic activities of the campus. RIT
though young in terms of its year of
establishment has grown beyond bounds and
today it stands as one of the premier
institutes in the realm of technological
education. I congratulate the team of faculty members and
students of RIT and wish success in all your future endeavours.
PRINCIPAL’S COLUMN
Rajiv Gandhi Institute of
Technology, named after the
late Prime Minister Sri. Rajiv
Gandhi, owned and run by the
Government of Kerala, is
established with a view to make
it a center of technological
excellence for under graduate,
post graduate and research
studies. Being an institution
nearing its silver jubilee, we get
the crèam of the technocrats
serve as faculty. With
tremendous support from staff
fraternity and aspiring techies, RIT has carved a niche in the
technological sector.
Programmes under TEQIP are envisaged with large hypes
and hopes so as to improve our class rooms, labs, library,
infrastructure and general amenities. It has been carried out
with great spirits and it is still in its course on a high note
with experienced hands from esteemed organizations, senior
faculty from reputed institutions, people from industry and
consultancy services turning up, to share their knowledge
and experience. The diverse knowledge acquired from the
conferences coordinated is a new learning experience for the
faculty. With a view regarding the students’ placement,
students are given soft skill sessions under Career Guidance
and Placement Cell. Active PTA and NSS units remain the
backbones of our institution.

So, sans limits, sans boundaries, the quest for knowledge
continues and hopefully the programmes go on with the best
for the development of the students in all the technical and
non-technical vistas. Today we have embarked on our new
venture of publishing the RIT newsletter to showcase all our
activities curricular as well as co-curricular and is indeed a
new leap in showcasing our development.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES
The Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering has
set up an uninterrupted power supply (ups) testing centre as
a wing of power quality research lab as a full-fledged facility
for testing UPS up to 50 kVA. The lab was inaugurated by Dr.
K.P. Indiradevi , Principal, RIT, Kottayam on 4th April 2014.
The function was presided over by Prof. Vijaya kumari C K,HOD,
EEE. Prof. Sasikumar Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Prof.
P N Thankachan HOD of the Dept. of Electronics and
Communication, and Prof. Gymmy Joseph Kattoor of the
Department of Civil Engineering felicitated the venture. This
UPS testing facility has the required gadgets to test UPS
systems in accordance with the relevant standards of our
country.

Ar. Brijesh Shajilal deliberating with Architecture students….
Our college observed National Science Day on 25th Feb 2014
at exposing the final year B.Tech students to the various
modern manufacturing techniques available. The session
comprised of topics like EBMECM, LIGA Process, and AJM etc.
The speaker who has immense experience in the field of
modern manufacturing methods displayed live models. The
programmer succeeded in conveying the challenges involved
in the modern manufacturing world.

Technology and Environment (KSCSTE). Dr. Sabu Thomas,
Director, School of Chemical Sciences, MG University, delivered
the keynote address on the topic “Fostering Scientific Temper”.

VISITING FACULTY PROGRAMMES
In the Department of Architecture, Ar. Brijesh Shaijlal,
renowned Architect gave a presentation on the topic “How to
design Schools of Architecture” to the S6 students on 27th
January 2014. Ar. Prasanth Mohan, cinematographer and
Architect gave a talk on March 2nd 1014 on Architectural
Photography. Dr. Shojy Joy Edison, a hortculturist deliberated
on Landscape Architecture in March 2014 to the S4 students
of Architecture. The talks were coordinated by Ar. Tessy Varkey,
the Academic coordinator of the Department of Architecture.
In the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mr P Rajan
,Scientist F, NPOL Kochi gave a talk on Modern Manufacturing
Methods on 21st February 2014. The programme was aimed

PAPERS PUBLISHED IN JOURNALS
Renu Jose of ECE published her research work on “Low
complexity joint estimation of synchronization impairments
in sparse channel for MIMO–OFDM system”, in AEU International Journal of Electronics and Communications,
Volume 68, Issue 2, February 2014. She also published a
paper titled “A Bayesian Approach for Joint Estimation of
PhaseNoise and Channel in OFDM System”, in IET Signal
Processing., vol.8, Feb. 2014.
John C. John of MCA, published a paper titled “Meeting
Cardinality Constraints in Role Mining,” in the IEEE Transactions
on Dependable and Secure Computing, pre-print March 2014.
The editorial team on behalf of all members of RIT
congratulates everyone for their achievements in publishing
the research works done by them.

TRAINING PROGRAMMES/
SHORT TERM COURSES
A STTP on “Optical Communication System” sponsored by
the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Kerala
was organized by the Dept. of ECE from 3rd to 8th March 2014.
Many experts in the field on Optical Communication System
deliberated during the 6 day short term training programme
which was co-ordinated by Prof.P.N.Thankachan, HOD, ECE
and Prof.Joseph Zacharias , Associate Professor, ECE
Department.
A TEQIP sponsored short term training programme on
Advanced Computer Networks and Queuing Theory was
organized by Prof. Ebin M. Manuel of Dept. of ECE from 7th to
9 th March 2014. Many eminent personalities such as
Dr.Radhakrishnan, a senior faculty from DTE deliberated during
the programme.

Mr. Joseph Zacharias of ECE presented a paper in International
Conference on Optoelectronics at Interlaken , Switzerland April
2014.
Ms Preethi M. Nair and Ms.Lajurani T of ECE co-ordinated an
STTP for technical staff on testing and calibration of lab
equipments.
In the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, an STTP on
Optimization methods and application was co-ordinated by
Dr. G. Venugopal and Mr. Sabu K.T. from 28th Feb to 6th March
2014.
Another STTP on ‘Open source software for research purpose’
was conducted from 11-3-14 to 13-3-14 by Mr. Jinesh N. and
Mr. Vikas V. K.
Mr. Pradeep Kumar P. of Dept. of Mechanical Engg. and
Mr.Shinoj K. Sukumaran of ECE attended 2nd World Summit
on Accreditation at NBA, New Delhi which was conducted from
8th to 10th March 2014.

Indian science of Building construction was conducted from

was coordinated by Dr. Binumol Tom, Ar. Tessy Varkey and
Ar. Dinesh C of the Department of Architecture.
In the Dept. of Architecture, a short term training programme

The Electrical association has actively organized technical talks,
quizzes, workshops, group discussion, circuit assembly contest
and project expo. The general convenor was Ajmal Unais
Kolathur, S6 EEE under the advisorship of Mr. Joseph K.D.,
Asst. Prof., EEE The Department of Physical Education under
CONGRATULATIONS !
Hearty Congratulations to Prof. Biju Augustine
P., Associate Professor of the Dept. of
Mechanical Engineering for receiving Ph.D on
Production Planning awarded by CUSAT.
Based on the activities of ADSPR Lab under
Dr. Leena Mary, Professor, Dept. of ECE, during
2011 – 13, an additional funding of Rs. 30
lakhs was sanctioned
by Centre for
Engineering Research and Development (CERD), Government
of Kerala for setting up the centre of excellence. Hats off…..
Commendation award IIA – The Department of Architecture
was awarded the IIA Asian Paints Royale State award
for excellence in Architecture 2013 - Commendation under
Category 2 “Documentation Projects”, for their project “The
cultural Heritage of Thazhathangadi, Kottayam”. The award is
constituted by the Indian Institute of Architects, Kerala
Chapter. Congrats for the hard work and the team spirit.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES
To create an awareness among public and architect fraternity,
the value of our rich architectural heritage the documentation
of timber houses of Thazhathangadi was exhibited to the
general public during the exhibition Design World 2014
conducted by Indian Institute of Architects, Kottayam centre
in March 2014 at Kottayam. Many of the works of the students
of the Department of Architecture were also exhibited during
the programme. Media gave wonderful coverage on the 5m
long mural painting depicting the story of Perumthachan –
retold, prepared by the S1S2 students of Architecture under
the guidance of Sri. Renjeeth Ram based on the concept
developed by Dr. Binumol Tom.

‘Sandeep Memorial Football Tournament’ on 28th March2014.
