Jill learned to knit at 10 years of age. After a ‘teen years’ break, she re-learned and has been knitting with
a passion ever since. The first sweater she knit, she modified, and the next was her own design. Five years
as a yarn shop owner gave her a passion for teaching as well as designing. Jill has been an instructor at
STITCHES events, Knitter’s Day Out, Knitter’s Connection, Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Show, and many
shops. Her designs can be found in Knitter’s Magazine, Cast On, and Knitty. She is co-author of A Knitter’s
Gallery of Mitered Squares: 45 Unique Designs in Color, Texture and Lace.

Gwen Bortner is a Craft Yarn Council Certified Teacher teaching at venues throughout the country, is the author
of Entree to Entrelac, and is half of the brains behind a new partnership with Kellie Nuss: Two Sides—Two Points.
Gwen’s passion is teaching. Whether teaching through the local community education program, at a national
knitting convention, or through her new online venture EduKnit, meeting new people and sharing the love of
knitting is one of her greatest joys. Gwen’s teaching philosophy can be summed up in the following quote, “My
job is to make the students’ toolbox bigger. If all you own is a hammer, everything looks like a nail! In the process
of providing options, more skills are developed, and a better knitter is the result. My mantra is knitting is fun. If

Cindy Craig
Cindy learned to knit while chaperoning Girl Scouts in Norway. As a self-professed “knitting geek,” she
enjoys exploring the technical side of knitting and tinkering with new skills, stitch patterns, knitting
patterns, and concepts. She has been teaching professionally in yarn shops, guild events, and knitting
shows for more than 10 years. She is the author of The Kids Knitting Notebook and has designs published
in Knitter’s Magazine, Knitting Today, and Red Heart, in addition to many self-published patterns.
Cindy has been the manager of The Studio Knitting & Needlepoint since 2002. She loves helping students
learn to knit or crochet and is very skilled at getting students unstuck. She knits everywhere she goes and
is frequently questioned on the sidelines of the soccer field, at PTA meetings, or at Scouting events.

side. You’ll learn to make a cable that looks the same on both sides. It is perfect
for scarves and other applications where both sides are showing. You should

Knitted Miters Basic knitting skills such as casting on, picking up, and
decreasing, combined with color and texture, create endless possibilities.
Mitered knitting can become squares, rectangles, diamonds, or strips and is
the foundation of some of today’s best designs. You will learn to make a basic
square, to join squares as you go, and to build the squares into a project. You will

Charts Can Be Your Friends Don’t let a chart scare you. Many knitters
prefer working from charts instead of written directions. Once you get the hang
of them, charts can make knitting a lot easier. In this class you will learn the basic
symbols, the basic rules for chart reading, and some tricks that make it easy.
We’ll practice knitting from a simple chart while making a cozy for your coffee
cup (or soda can).

Uh-Oh! Fixing Mistakes All knitters make mistakes. It can be
frustrating when you can’t fix them yourself, so you rip out and start over
numerous times. This class focuses on the most common skills beginners
need: picking up dropped stitches, correcting mistakes a few rows back, and
understanding the difference between ripping back and un-knitting. These
skills will help you relax when an ‘oops’ comes along.

TT1 Short Rows Short rows can create curves and shapes in your knitted
fabric. They are used for heels of socks, bust darts, and shoulder shaping. You
will learn basic short rows in both garter and stockinette stitch, wrap and turn,
and ‘hiding’ the wraps to make them virtually invisible. Included in this class is a
pattern for a Curly Q Scarf that we will begin.

TT13 Invisible Joins—Well Nearly Invisible Joining yarn in the middle
of the row can be frustrating if the join is noticeable. This class will include the
Russian braided, and the knotted joins. Learn which join to do based on the
fiber content of your yarn. Your next project will fly because you can’t wait to
get to the end of the ball to try your new skills.

After many years of teaching knitting and crochet, Deborah discovered weaving in 1996, and her love of fiber,
texture, and color came together. Since then she has worked full time as a weaver and artist, including teaching
fiber arts, creating and selling wearable art, giving lectures, and showing in local, regional, and national exhibits.
Deborah’s work has been exhibited at galleries and museums across the country, and she has won numerous
awards and written articles for national publications. Her work has been commissioned by churches and is in
many private collections. Since 2004 she has been an artist in residence, teacher, and weaver at Studio Channel
Islands Art Center in Camarillo, CA. Deborah loves helping knitters discover the joy of weaving.

Rigid-heddle Weaving Have you wondered what all the
excitement is about weaving? Have you heard that warping the loom is
difficult and complicated? During this demonstration you will see just
how easy it is to set up a rigid-heddle loom and begin weaving. With
very little experience, you can easily weave beautiful fabric for scarves,
bags, pillows, and so much more. Let yourself learn about a new way to
use your yarn. During this discussion you will see examples of how many
different things can be created from the rigid-heddle loom.

the knitting fundamentals of cast-on, knit, purl, and bind-off. We’ll make
small swatches in class and practice the basic techniques of seaming rowsto-rows and stitches-to-stitches. And we’ll talk about how these techniques
are used to put garments and other knit pieces together. Learn to seam,
and a whole new world of knitting will open for you!

Play with our stash and discover how to combine leftovers in appealing
ways. Learn basics of color behavior and how to trust your eye. We will

Having taught at STITCHES events for more than 20 years and at a variety of knitting seminars from England to Alaska, Leslye Solomon
is an enthusiastic, energetic, and empathetic teacher with extensive knitwear training. Leslye owns Woolstock Yarn Shop in Glyndon,
Maryland. She shares her experience and knowledge in instructional videos, DVDs and books. Subjects covered include sweater
finishing, making socks using double points and a single circular needle, techniques in buttonholes and bands, a wonderful method
of continental knitting, bead knitting, and machine knitting, including a book entitled The Uncomplicated Knitting Machine. Leslye has
also created KnitSpeaker, an iPhone, iPad, iPod timed-audio pattern-repeating app for knitters. A class with Leslye is an experience

but double points are driving you batty? Knitting on two circular needles might
be your answer! In one quick hour, you’ll learn the basic technique for casting on
and knitting with two circular needles. You’ll never need double points, again!

steps for a successful Kitchener Stitch. And you’ll never look back!

TT2 Continental Knitting Continental knitting involves tensioning the yarn in
the hand holding the unworked stitches (for most people this is the left hand) and
using the other needle to pick stitches through in a quick and efficient manner. It
is a great technique to have in your knitting repetoire. It can solve a multitude of
knitting problems or just be a good companion to the way you already knit. Your
instructor will teach the basics of tensioning the yarn and picking the stitches rather
than throwing. We will learn the knit and purl stitches and have time to practice and
discuss how to transition to this useful method of knitting.
Materials: Any yarn and appropriate knitting needles for sampling.

CC5 Stranded Color Learn to work holding 2 colors at the same time! Commonly
called Fair Isle knitting, this technique for stranding colors across the back lets you
create brightly colored and patterned fabrics. While working on a small bag/hat
project, you’ll practice getting an even tension (not too tight, not too loose), learn
ways to prevent yarns from twisting, and try different holding techniques. Come get
a taste of this classic knitting technique!
Note: Students must already be familiar with knitting in the round.

needle 16” long, measured from tip to tip.

I-cord on the Edge Edge your knitting as you work it! In class you’ll create
a swatch with I-cord edges worked at the same time, learn how to turn a corner,
execute an I-cord bind-off, and create I-cord button loops. We’ll discuss additional
ways to edge with I-cord, as well as how to handle gauge considerations. Turn your
swatch into a cuff or a coin purse! Note: Must know how to work a basic stockinette
stitch I-cord.

TT38 Pleasing Plaits The intriguing horizontal element known as Herringbone
or Latvian braid is seen on garments and accessories across northern Europe and
the Baltic. In this class you’ll learn how to work a simple braided cast-on, make
braids across the middle of fabric, and braid while you bind off. By the end of class
you’ll be planning pleasing plaits for all your projects!

Edgier Edges Add edge to your edgings with these 2 easy, pretty
beginnings. Reverse yarn overs create eyelets on the YO chain while cast-on/castoff stitches give the picots their teeth. Sew your chains around garments, pick up
stitches in them to get started, or simply add findings and wear them as jewelry!

At its most basic, a cable is a group of stitches whose
parts swap position every few rows. The maneuvering required to swap stitches
is simple to learn. Their complex appearance comes about because of the many
ways stitches can be grouped, arranged, and intertwined with other groups. Learn
the basics of crossing cables, terminology, and how to work them from written
instructions and from a chart.

NEW XT11 Knotting Nuttiness
Cords of all kinds—cast-on, bind-off, crochet chain,
I-cord, kumihimo, paracord, or just plain super-bulky yarn—can be turned into
jewelry, coasters, buttons, and frogs with just a little knotting know-how. In class,
you’ll learn how to tie zipper sinnets, braid knots, carrick bends, and more using a
length of clothesline. You’ll go home with a step-by-step reference to remind you of
which end goes where! Get nutty for knots!

Joyce learned how to knit and crochet at the age of nine. She is a CYCA Certified Instructor in both knit
and crochet. Joyce designs for numerous yarn companies and publications. Her most current designs can
be found in Crocheted Afghans, 100 Hats to Knit and Crochet, 100 Crochet Projects, Great Garter Stitch, and
Master in Crochet and Herrschner’s Treasury of Crochet Afghans 2014 Calendar. She has taught since 1999
for CGOA, TKGA, TNNA, Craft Cruises, STITCHES Expos, local knitting/crochet guilds, and similar venues.
Joyce loves to adapt knitting techniques into crochet. Her motto, "Why should knitters have all the fun? If
I can knit it, I will figure out a way to crochet it!"

CR13 Entrelac Crochet Entrelac crochet is a way of doing Tunisian
crochet so you end up with little blocks that form a complete row. This is the
crocheter’s version of Entrelac knitting. It can usually be done with a regular
crochet hook and any size yarn. You will learn this stitch technique while
making a small mat/coaster.
