Hernández-Ortiz, Ph.D. 3/14 RESEARCH My research group currently has 15 graduate students and more than 12 undergraduates. The projects are mainly funded by COLCIENCIAS in three different modes: Co-funded with private institutions, non-co-funded and through the Ph.D. program. There are several students that are funded by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia Research Fund and the Faculty of Mines Ph.D. and M.Sc. tuition grant. Projects that are in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Chicago are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Health (NIH), the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Keck Foundation. These collaborations in the USA support co-advised students and postdocts in Juan de Pablo and Dave Schwartz’ groups. They primarily provide funding for travel expenses, conferences and monthly expenses when colombian students visit US. Research Projects 1. Project: Modelación del desgaste erosivo de alta temperatura en revestimientos de barrera térmica (TBC) para máquinas térmicas de carga variable. FASE II: Aplicación de plasma, diseño de polvos y mecanismos de erosión (Modeling high temperature erosion of thermal barrier coatings for thermal devices in nonconstant operation conditions. FASE II: Air Plasma application, powder design and erosive mechanism). Funded by: Empresas Públicas de Medellı́n (EPM): $1,000,000 for 3 years. Involvement: co-PI with Professor Alejandro Toro. Students: 1 Ph.D. student, 2 Master students and 5 undergraduate students. Years: 2013 to 2016. 2. Project: New Physical Methodologies for Genomic Analysis Funded by: The National Institute of Health (US): $1,500,000 for 3 years Funded by: Universidad Nacional de Colombia: $20,000 Involvement: co-PI in collaboration with Professor David C. Project: Hierarchical driven-assembly of nano-confined nematics Funded by: Universidad Nacional de Colombia Ph.D. grant and Faculty of Mines M.Sc. tuition grant: $150,000 for 4 years Involvement: PI (Colombia) and co-PI (US). Comments: This project is part of a collaboration with Professor Juan de Pablo in the Institute for Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago. The US funding comes from NSF and DOE. Juan P. Project: Design and fabrication of light-weight composites through direct molding for ballistic applications Funded by: Colciencias - National Ph.D. program: $100,000 for 4 years. Involvement: PI. Students: 1 Ph.D. student and 3 undergraduate students. Years: 2012 to 2016. Comments: This project is being presented for additional funding of $750,000 for 4 years to Colciencias, Colombian companies and the Colombian Army. In addition, it embraces the R and Light Soldier. R concepts of Soldier Comfort 6. Project: Collective motion, chemotaxis and signaling in colonies of self-propelled organisms Funded by: Colciencias - National Ph.D. program: $100,000 for 4 years. Funded by: Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Sede Medellı́n: $20,000. Involvement: PI. Students: 1 Ph.D. student and 1 undergraduate student. Years: 2010 to 2014. Comments: This project is being presented for additional funding of $500,000 for 4 years to Colombian mining companies to extend the study to bio-leaching mechanisms of bacteria for gold recovery in mining tails. 7. Project: Modelación y Simulación del proceso de espumado en termofijos y elastómeros (Modeling and Simulation of thermosetting and elastomeric foaming processes) Funded by: Colciencias - Extrusiones S.A.: $300,000 for 3 years.
