It is now official – Brighton is moving! Our new building will be located at 21705 58th Street West in Mountlake Terrace. The building is about 5 minutes away just on the other side of I-5. The plan is to start classes there this fall on September 9th. In the past the building has been a school and a church. It will be completely remodeled for Brighton and will offer quite a bit more space than our current site. It has a much larger gym, a much larger turf soccer field, a new innovation lab, more classrooms and lots of windows. The new site is in a quiet neighborhood on a dead-end street. The location feels very quiet and peaceful, especially compared to where we are now. Construction on the new site began yesterday and there is very little leeway in the schedule so we will keep our fingers crossed. In addition to remodeling all of the classroom spaces, a new wing is being added to house the Early Childhood program. Below are two pictures the show what the site looks like now, and what the finished site will look like. (The angles are different and there will be no red poles but you can get a general idea.) Current City Church site Planned Brighton site We are very, very excited about the move but also recognize that is a lot of work to do between now and September. We will continue to send out email updates weekly about progress and answer andy questions you have about the move. Please send your questions to David Locke and I will be answering them in weekly updates starting with the most common ones. Getting this far has been a tremedous effort and I want to extend a special thanks to our management and senior management - Linda Grobman, Wendy Bond, and Joan Pittenger, as well as Lee Bohs, Neil Garawitz and our president, George Bernstein. The support from Nobel on this project has been amazing! In addition, the staff at Brighton, and especially Russ Noble and Kelly Goodmansen (who is acting as project manager) have gone way over and above in their efforts. In addition, Nobel’s business partners, John Richards and Elliott Severson have been a huge part of getting this project off the ground and John will be leading the construction effort going forward. depicting the personality of the year that has just passed. On New Year's Eve families gather in the streets in front of their homes and burn the doll to symbolize the passing of the old year. At Brighton School fifth graders made their own Año Viejo and burned it while sharing aloud their penas (regrets) from the old year and their esperanzas (hopes) for the new year all in Spanish! What are your esperanzas for this year? Expect lots more communication going forward, but for now we’ll just take a moment to celebrate this happy day! CLASS AUCTION PROJECT VIEWING This year’s Class Auction Project Viewing will be Wednesday, March 11th. Visit the MPR anytime throughout the day to see the amazing works of art that your student has helped to create. Creative parent volunteers and our awesome staff have worked with our students to create glass art, garden accessories, amazing play items and more that you have the opportunity to have in your home and treasure forever. This year’s Class Auction Project Viewing will also feature ViVi Jewelry for sale. Brighton mom, Kelly Menzik will be donating 50% of all sales to the Brighton PTO Auction. Come check out the beautiful jewelry and support out PTO. Student portraits will be available for purchase at the Art Walk too. Former Brighton student and awesome photographer, Sam Palmer, has been taking darling photos of each of our students, this year with a western theme! The prints will be $15 (cash or check). SECOND GRADE STUDIES FAIRY TALES Second graders recently completed a study of fairy tales. They compared and contrasted eleven different versions of Cinderella from different countries and cultures. They read fairy tales told from different viewpoints, performed reader’s theater, and explored the elements of a traditional fairy tale. After reading a fairy tale(s) of their choice each student created a game based on the story. Many students read more than one version of their story. We had board games, a fairy tale Jenga, a bean bag toss, and a puzzle to put together. The first graders enjoyed coming to play with us. The 2 nd graders were very accomplished teachers as they patiently taught others how to play their game! FIFTH GRADE SPANISH Señora Gahan’s fifth grade Spanish students learned about a New Year tradition called Año Viejo (Old Year). In the Spanish-speaking country of Ecuador families prepare for the new year by making a life size doll to represent the old year. The doll is created with old clothes and materials that will no longer be needed, then it is dressed with a mask Page 2 Brighton Bulletin February 26, 2015 BRIGHTON GOES TO THE THEATER Down the Rabbit Hole and into a magical world Brighton families joined together to go to see “Alice in Wonderland” Saturday January 24 th. The Bothell High School performance directed by Chaya Glass (Brighton’s Summer Drama Camp teacher and alum) brought all of the characters to life. Favorites of our Brighton students included the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, Humpty Dumpty and of course, Alice. It was so much fun to visit the theater and for over thirty of us to meet in the theater. Thanks for coming! In this picture we are reinforcing the many sounds of "bossy r" or r-controlled vowels. Using the students love of drawing and stories to help them remember how to spell. "Ar" like a pirate, "or" like a horn and "ur, ir, er" like a hot rod. FIRST GRADE PHONICS Look how intent the first graders are looking through books for the "ed" ending in words. They are placing the words they find on a class chart. When we are finished they immediately ask, "When are we going to do that again?" What a way to practice reading! Page 3 Brighton Bulletin February 26, 2015 THIRD GRADERS ROCK THEIR PLAY! The Third Graders performed their class play “This Golden River” written and directed by Sue Elvrum February 12th for classes, friends, and families. Following the life cycle of salmon students were able to act out what they are learning about in science and what the whole school is watching in the fish tank in the Lower Campus. With lots of laughs and inspirational moments the class sang and acted their way along with the help of their teacher Ellen Garza. The awesome audience cheered the salmon on as they rocked their way along the Golden River “Born in the U-S-A!” 2ND GRADE FIELD TRIP TO SKATEPARK On Friday February 6th, Brighton’s 2nd graders got to try a new sport. Together with Mrs. Angie we traveled to Seattle’s All Together Skatepark. After the students donned helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads three patient and enthusiastic instructors taught the students some skateboarding basics. By the end of the lesson the students were all more confident and improved in their skills. After 1 ½ hours of practice the tired and sweaty kids thanked Shawn, Marshal, and Steve then headed back to school. Many of the students are certain that they want to go back for more! Brighton collects diapers, wipes, toilet tissue, and formula for Next Steps in Lynnwood. This collection supports low income babies in our local community. Our donations have been amazing and they are very well received by the non-profit organization. Collection containers can be found in the Library and Upper Campus office. Thank you to the families and classes who have been supporting the Stone Soup Project in the last months. This project collects soup ingredients that are put together at the Queen Anne Food bank near the Seattle Children’s’ Theater. This is the nearest soup kitchen we can find. They also are very welcoming to school groups who would like to help out. Any group or family who is interested in putting together some ingredients to take down the next time you are at the Seattle Center talk to Sue Elvrum sue.elvrum@nlcinc.com Thank you for helping our children learn about community involvement. BRIGHTON BAND FIELD TRIP Brighton's young musicians got a chance to take a trip down to Seattle to check out the Seattle Symphony's Soundbridge and Seattle EMP Museum. The trip started off with a Science of Sound class inspired by Trimpin where students got the chance to make their own instruments out of PVC piping and place them in any of the instrument families. They named their instruments and performed them as well. Students then got the opportunity to play any instrument in Soundbridge. They really had a blast! Everyone ate lunch upstairs in Benaroya's cafeteria lobby, then hopped on the buses to head toward the exciting Experience Music Project by the Space Needle. Inside students got to learn about musicians and bands from around the Seattle Washington area and see famous artifacts. The highlight of the trip was the Sound Lab where everyone (adults included) got a chance to jam in a band, play with drums, keyboards, soundboard mixers, recording sessions, musical lazers, and record mixers. It was quite a musically fullfilling day! The classes that went on the field trip were: Middle School Symphonic Quintet, Middle School Rock Band, Guitar Class, and Elementary Band. Page 5
