9 2 Football to footlights Camps offer programs to meet every interest By Amy Stumpfl astumpfl@nashvillecitypaper.com There was a time when summer camp conjured up images of musty cabins and Popsicle stick crafts. And while so-called “traditional” residential camps continue to thrive, day camps and specialty camps — which focus on one particular type of activity — are gaining popularity. In fact, the American Camp Association (ACA) estimates that the number of day camps in the United States has grown by nearly 90 percent in the last 20 years. “Day camp offers a lot of flexibility,” said Wanda DeWaard, executive with the ACA Heart of the South, which represents Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. “Parents like it because it’s convenient and affordable. And younger children like it because it gives them a taste of what camp is all about, without leaving the comforts of home.” Still, DeWaard insists that there is much to be said for overnight programs. “Once kids are ready for a little more independence, residential camp can be a life-changing experience,” she said. “Kids often come home with new confidence, a greater sense of responsibility and respect for the world around them. There’s nothing like it.” Situated on the shores of J. Percy Priest Lake, YMCA Camp Widjiwagan offers an excellent case in point. Since 1998 Widjiwagan’s day camp has been a favorite among local children, offering everything from swimming and canoeing to horseback riding and ultimate frisbee. “Our campers receive a well-rounded experience with a wide variety of activities,” said B.J. Davis, associate executive director at Camp Widjiwagan. “We see so many kids that are overscheduled throughout the school year — this is an opportunity for them to relax and just play. We also find that kids often discover new interests. So the kid who plays soccer year-round may find that he really likes lacrosse, too.” On the other hand, specialty camps provide opportunities for kids to pursue their passions. For example, the Erron Kinney Football Camp provides daily instruction from the former Tennessee Titan and other NFL athletes. The camp, held at Lipscomb University, is part Former Titans’ tight end Erron Kinney hosts a summer football camp at Lipscomb University. of Sports International’s youth summer football program, which serves boys ages 7-18. “What separates us from other football camps is that we offer an overnight program,” said Dave Hahn, executive vice president with Sports International. “Our facilities are excellent because we work only with college campuses in NFL cities. Campers get to interact with NFL players, and our coaches are highly qualified.” Likewise, Nashville Children’s Theatre offers summer drama camps taught by some of the region’s finest performers. With programs ranging from pre-K to 12th grade, NCT day camps appeal to aspiring thespians as well as those who just want to have fun. “We start out by getting kids comfortable with movement and the idea of play creation,” said Julee Brooks, NCT’s director of education/ artistic associate. “As they get older, they can explore more specific skills, such as musical theater and stage combat. But we’re really developing social skills, like working with a team or committing to your own ideas. These are important skills for life whether or not they choose to pursue the theater.” And in the end, that’s what camp is all about, according to the ACA’s DeWaard. “It’s not so much about which kind of camp your child goes to — it’s about the knowledge and memories they bring home with them,” she said.
