New Chairman at
the Parish Council
At the last Annual Parish Council meeting
Mr Norman Taylor was unanimously elected as
the Chairman of the Council. Mark Hinman was
elected Vice Chair.
Parish Councillors are volunteers who work together to
serve the community.
The Parish Council is responsible for:
The Cemetery; the welfare sports facilities (football pitches,
including ‘the tops’ bowling green, multi play area allotment
gardens and car park; Wharf Road Recreation Ground;
the play area (Hilltop); former reservoir site; War Memorial
and memorial garden (Greyhound Corner) and the
Village Hall.
One of the Council’s main responsibilities is to represent
parishioners relating to services provided by Bolsover
District Council and Derbyshire County Council. The first
item at all Parish Council meetings is to receive parishioner
representations. Any parishioner who has a query or
problem with local government services in general can get
advice from the Clerk of the Council (telephone 01773
580046) Monday to Friday 9 – 11 a.m.
THE COUNCIL IS CURRENTLY BUILDING A NUMBER
OF LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS IN ORDER TO INCREASE
THE NUMBER OF EVENTS IN THE PARISH. LOOK
OUT FOR NEW EVENTS COMING SOON!
PSCO to update
Twitter followers
Residents in South Normanton and Pinxton can
keep up-to-date with the work of their local police
after a new PSCO has taken over the account.
Marion Jeffrey, who joined the South Normanton and
Pinxton Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team in October
last year, has volunteered to keep in touch with the @
SNormPinxtonSNT followers.
PCSO Jeffrey will be
sending out short
messages whilst
out on patrol, with
information about
where she is, local
policing issues
and offering crime
prevention advice.
Marion takes over
the account, which
Pictured: Marion (Maz) Jeffrey.
has more than 120
followers, from PSCO
Vicky Hill, who has moved on to cover the Heanor,
Shipley and Smalley area.
She will also be able to interact with followers and
upload photos from any events she attends or from
her patrols.
PCSO Jeffrey said: “It is such a great way to keep in
touch with the local community. I’ll be able to update
followers with information about my patrols and any
issues that are affecting the area.
“People will be able to send me messages which I’ll be
able to reply to, which makes the account an additional
tool for me to be able to communicate with local
residents.”
Derbyshire Constabulary launched its own twitter
profile in 2009, using it to share information, news and
appeals with the public, and is followed by more than
19,100 people.
In total there are 30 Safer Neighbourhood policing
teams who have taken to Twitter to update residents
about their activities, and three are in the Amber
Valley Area.

St Helen’s Church.... What’s On!
Older People’s
Forum – Bolsover
and District
If you are 50 or over, you are like us.
We are interested in what is happening
in this fast changing world and things
that will have an effect on us as we
grow older, such as: how to remain in
our homes; who to contact should we
need help or support; what services are
available to us either in an emergency
or on a more routine basis; how to
keep well and warm, something we
all need help with in these days of
spiralling fuel bills! These are only
a small example of the topics we
explore and learn about at our open
forum meetings which are friendly and
informal with a warm welcome to all
our members old and new.
This is how a forum gets off the blocks,
there is a small committee who are
volunteers that meet once a month
and are elected by you, the members.
The committee organise the topics
and speakers for the open meetings,
the also seek funding and manage
other organisational matters. As we
are Bolsover and district we cover the
area of the district council, so that
means South Normanton and Pinxton,
Creswell and Whitwell, Bolsover and
all places inbetween – which means we
try to have meetings around the district
in places such as Shirebrook, Creswell,
Doe Lea and South Normanton, in
fact any place where we can hire a
big enough room to accommodate
our numbers (often in excess of one
hundred people). Community Transport
buses and taxis can be pre-booked,
and on arrival there is registration
and a welcome cuppa’! Our speakers
are often experts in their fields, and
exhibitors sometimes give away free
samples or small gifts. If it is a full day
meeting we give a free lunch, we also
have full wheel chair access if required
and carers are welcome too.
Look for our posters advertising our
next event and you will be well on your
way to having an informative, lively
and sociable time.
For more information contact Jo
Marples 01629 532466 or June
Grifiths 01246 825049.

HS2 to skim past the region
Super fast trains could be skirting just east of
Pinxton and Selston by 2032 according to maps
released of phase two of the controversial HS2
high speed rail line.
The proposed route goes north from Birmingham
along two branches, with new stations at Toton near
Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester. If the
preferred £32 billion project is approved it will run
alongside the M1 as it passes the two villages.
Leader of Derbyshire County Council Councillor Andrew
Lewer has initially welcomed the plans, “We welcome the
idea that the East Midlands station will be Toton. It will
impact on Derbyshire in a number of ways, though, and
we recognise some residents will have concerns.
PINXTON’S FORGOTTEN GEM – PINXTON OR WYNN’S CASTLE
There are not many villages that can boast they have
a castle. Pinxton can but its importance has been
long forgotten. This is probably because it is not the
traditional perceived castle of the middle ages.
Pinxton (or Wynn’s Castle) was one of about 400
‘motte-and-bailey’ castles that were built in strategic
places throughout the country shortly after the Norman
Conquest in 1066.
Motte-and-Bailey castles
were popular because
they could be quickly
and easily constructed
with local labour in a
matter of months. Earth
extracted for the water
defences was used to
construct the higher
bailey and the even
higher motte on the
top of which the keep
would be constructed.
A typical motte-and-bailey
It is surprising how
castle similar to Pinxton Castle
effective they were.
Pinxton Castle is a registered National Monument.
Some excavation work was carried out on the site in
the early 1950’s when a number of medieval artifacts
were found. A green glazed pan tile can be seen in the
Museum on Victoria Road (Sundays 2 – 4.30 pm).
is probably the reason why it has come down
through ages and is still known as a castle. There
may well be a connection between this site and the
fondly remembered ‘Barney Castle’ at the Toll Bar.
People today remember Barney Castle as the old
Toll Bar cottage which before it was demolished
was converted into a shop. The original Barney
Castle actually stood on the opposite (Pinxton) side
of the Toll Bar. It was kept by a man called Barney
(probably a nick-name) but why castle? The building
itself probably went back to the sixteen hundreds and
may well have been built with the stone that once
defended the proper castle.
The site of Pinxton Castle as it looked in the 1980’s
According to a report by English Heritage in 1993
the site is extremely well preserved with original
foundations still intact below the service. It is also
rare because it had a double moat system of water
defence. This was provided by a spring which rises
on adjacent land and which provides the source for
the Maghole Brook.
In the Middle Ages the fortification was provided
with a (probably crenellated) defensive wall. This
The former toll cottage – the last known building to be
known locally as ‘Barney Castle’.
The above information has been provided by Norman Taylor on behalf of the Pinxton and South Normanton Local
History Society. The Society meets on the fourth Monday in the month (7.15 pm) at the Post Mill, South Normanton.
One of the main objectives of the Society is to preserve the heritage of Pinxton. If you have any old family photographs
you would like to have preserved for future generations please contact Norman Taylor (01773 863743) these can be
scanned in a few seconds without leaving your sight. If you prefer you can maintain copyright.

Donations this autumn!
As the sun sets on the summer season and we
begin to think of battening down the hatches for
the approach of winter, maybe now is the right
time to inject a bit of springtime into the house!
Pinxton residents embarking on a bit of an autumn
clearout will find the volunteers at SNaP Development
Project’s Chari-tea Shop on Wharf Road more than happy
to welcome unwanted clothes, toys and bric-a-brac with
open arms. Sales of these items, along with books and
DVDs, go towards raising funds for the Project’s Youth
Team to set up and run activities for young people in the
village. Over this summer’s school holidays, members of
the Team engaged with a number of local young people
on Wharf Road recreation ground every week to play
games and other sport activities as well as to talk through
and tackle any issues the young people were facing. More
activity is planned!
People calling into the Shop with donations, or to have
a bit of a browse, can also fight any chill in the air by
supping on a warm cup of tea or coffee and having a bit
of a natter. Maybe about the weather!
Dementia Day Services
Our day care centres are popular as they allow carers to
have regular breaks knowing that their relative is in safe
hands. It also gives an opportunity for those attending the
centre to socialise with others, and take part in a planned
programme of activities carried out by friendly and
experienced staff. Activities include sing-a-long/ exercises,
group games, dominoes/ cards, nail sessions, bingo,
quizzes, cake decorating, memory prompting activities
and many more.
Transport is provided between accommodation and the
centres. During the day a two course meal is provided and
support given to those who need assistance to eat. Hot
and cold drinks are also provided and personal care is
given to those who need it.
Referral to the scheme is usually via a professional
working in Health or Social services, but a private referral
can also be made. There is a daily charge of £10,
although in some cases additional charges may apply. On
receipt of a referral the organiser will make a home visit
to discuss individuals needs and make an assessment.
You can get further information from the Mind office in
Mansfield, on 01623 658044, ore visit their website
www.centralnottsmind.org
The Day Care Centre for Pinxton is held at the Village Hall
on Fridays between 9.30am and 2.30pm.

Pinxton Couple Celebrate Diamond
Wedding Anniversary
Pinxton Parish Council would like to share in
the good wishes extended by family and friends
to Arthur and Maureen Bentley, who have just
celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
The couple met at St Michael’s Church Hall dance in
South Normanton when they were both teenagers.
Arthur said: “There were boys on one side and girls
the other, and lots of pointing. I didn’t know whether to
ask her to dance or not. But I did and I remember us
dancing to Jimmy Young’s song Teenagers in Love and
here we were.”
Maureen was only 16 but two years later the couple were
married on 5th September 1953 at St Michael’s Church.
“It was a memorable year not just because we got
married but also because it was the Queen’s Coronation,
the year Edmund Hillary climbed Everest and when
Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, died,” remembers
Arthur who sang in the church choir where Maureen
served as a Sunday school teacher.
Their wedding reception was held at Hillcote Church
Hall. The couple lived in Westhouses before buying their
first home in South Normanton a year later. They lived
there until 1970 when they moved to Pinxton.
Arthur began his working life as a mining engineer at
Blackwell Colliery and spent 10 years at the pit until he
switched careers and retrained as a teacher.
“I preferred people to machines,” added Arthur. He
Free legal advice for residents in Derbyshire.
Derbyshire residents will now be able to get free legal advice
from one of the nine offices throughout the county – Alfreton,
Bolsover, Buxton, Chesterfield, Clay Cross, Ilkeston, Matlock,
Ripley and Staveley. Thanks to funding from Derbyshire County
Council, Legal Aid Agency and the Big Lottery Fund (Advices
Services Transition Fund), the Law Centre is able to provide free
legal services across Derbyshire.
Chesterfield Law Centre, a registered charity, has a team
of solicitors and advisers who provide free legal advice on
a range of housing and employment issues to tenants and
employees such as prevention of homelessness and evictions
from rented and mortgaged properties, redundancies
and dismissals.
worked briefly in Mansfield before becoming head of
science at Selston’s Matthew Holland School.
Meanwhile Maureen was busy raising their two sons,
Stephen and Peter. When they grew up she returned to
study for a degree in education going on to become a
primary school teacher at Bagthorpe. Maureen added:
“I even did a spell as a supply teacher at Matthew
Holland with Arthur.”
They put their successful partnership down to
maintaining a sense of humour over their six decades
and having a strong foundation filled with caring family
and friends.
St Michael’s Church has remained at their heart ever
since, with time spent as wardens, choir members and
also youth club workers.
“At one of our celebration parties some of our old youth
club members came along and it was wonderful to see
them again,” explained the couple whose house is filled
with cards and flowers from family and friends as well as
a momento from the Queen.
In their retirement and after Maureen had a serious
operation, it caused the pair to re-evaluate and pushed
them to travel more.
“We have now been all over the world from Canada to
New Zealand and Australia,” remembers Arthur. “And we
will be revisiting Venice and the Adriatic soon for a cruise
to celebrate our diamond year.”

Welfare “B” Band, everybody is welcome and light
refreshments will be served.
The Hearts of Gold event last year was a wonderful
evening with a total of 105 gold hearts being
purchased and hung on the tree. Readings from loved
ones were read out and Christmas Carols were sung.
This year the Events Committee is to purchase 200
tea lights which will be lit on the evening in memory
of loved ones. Anyone who has lost a loved one in
the last year and wishes to have a tea light lit and the
name read out from the Book of Remembrance on
the evening, or anyone who purchased a heart last
year and would like it hung on the tree this year, are
very welcome to do so at no cost.
For further information please contact Mrs Brenda
Kelly 01773 812533 before Thurs 14th November.
