August 15th marks the Feast of the
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin
Mary. This is the day the church
recognizes both the passing of Mary
and her assumption into heaven.
The story of Mary is that she requested the Apostles presence, knowing
that her time was short. All of the
Apostles gathered around her as she
peacefully went to sleep. The tomb
where she was buried was later
found to be empty and from this
came the Church’s teaching that
Mary was assumed into heaven body
and soul. This is represented in the icon by the “baby” in Christ’s
arms.
NOTE: The Assumption is not a holy day of obligation. Mass
will be celebrated on Monday at Saint Gabriel’s Convent Chapel
at 8:00 am.

Mass Stipends and Votive Candles: Masses are offered every day for
special intentions requested by parishioners (one intention per Mass).
It is customary that an offering be made at the time of the request.
Candles lit in the church or taken home are $3 each. Cases of candles
are not available for sale.

auditorium or cafeteria at the Center City Public Charter School Petworth Campus

or church grounds. Our ministry to the local Petworth community would also be extremely limited. Please remember to support our parish and its ministry with your weekly donations and don’t

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Dear Fellow Disciples:
What a gift our parish
community is to each one
us. We are blessed to be members
of a faith community with a rich
history in this beautiful part of
Washington. I feel that God is truly
good to me for bringing me to Saint
Gabriel Parish. It’s hard to believe
how quickly my first seven months
have passed by since arriving. I
continue to thank you for your
warm welcome and blessings for me
as pastor. As we collaborate for the
common good of our parish, there
are three qualities that I want to be
a driving forces behind our
collaboration as fellow disciples.
Those three qualities are:
transparency, inclusivity and
discipleship.
Transparency - my promise to you
is to be informative and open about
important decisions that affect the
parish community. For example,
beginning in September you will be
notified on a regular basis regarding
how our financial contributions are
being used to support the mission of
the parish. With the help of the
Finance Counsel, I will use fiscal
resources entrusted to the parish
with good stewardship and
appreciation.
Inclusivity – As spiritual leader of
our parish community I want to
promote ways in which a wide
representation of parishioners can
be included in the decision making
process. To this end I look to the
leaders of our parish (the
coordinators of all ministries and
groups) to develop methods for
listening, praying and discerning the
needs of the community.
Discipleship – all decision making
must be a discernment process with
our eyes focused on the mission.
That is, decisions are made in prayer
with the purpose of bringing our
community into an ever deepening
relationship with Jesus the Christ.
I hope you agree that these are three
things that are important for the
vitality of our parish. Please pray for
me regularly as I will pray for you;
we need one another’s prayers.

for Faith Day on August 27th!
Watch Cardinal Wuerl throw out the first pitch for the 1:05pm game against the Colorado Rockies
and stop by the center-field gates of Nationals Park to check-out the Fiat 500L Pope Francis used
during his visit to DC! Then stop by the Catholic Charities “breakfast to go” table to help assemble
a Cup of Joe breakfast bag, which will be donated to a homeless shelter run by Catholic Charities
after the game. Faith Day also includes postgame performances from local area church choirs and
player testimonies.
For each ticket sold at nationals.com/catholiccharities, $5 will be donated to Catholic Charities.

Sunday TV Mass
The Archdiocese of Washington produces a weekly Sunday TV Mass filmed in the Crypt
Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It is a wonderful
ministry for those members of our Catholic family who are unable to be physically present
with a local worshipping community for the Sunday Eucharistic Liturgy. The Mass airs every
Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on WDCW-50:
