(9.301) Sieglestr. 25 70469 Stuttgart, Germany http://www.basf-drucksysteme.de The newspaper market continues to be influenced by the trend towards the 26 greater use of colour in newspapers that are produced with a high standard of printing quality and on lightweight newsprint. A logical consequence of this is a demand for newsinks with a high colour intensity, good printing and drying behaviour and low strike-through. BASF responds to these wishes with the Newsking 323 and Newsking 324 highly pigmented and fast-setting ink series. High colour intensity and low strike-through have been combined in these ink series. They also run with low misting on the new, high-speed rotary presses. In addition, BASF adapts its inks to suit modern press concepts and introduces specially developed inks for use on the new coated coldset papers on to the market. – The increasing complexity of the interaction between ink, paper, and press, together with the growing demand for higher levels of printing quality and efficiency, mean that it is no longer possible to obtain improvements via just one component. It is becoming more important to achieve harmonisation in the system, for which reason BASF recommends the use of its fountain solution additives belonging to the Hydrofast 9005 product family. – Widespread use is made of spot colours in newspaper printing. BASF supports its customers by supplying press-ready spot colour inks, and providing assistance for the selection of suitable mixing systems. In order to minimise the logistical problems related to the use of spot colour inks, BASF offers information and printed samples to illustrate the possibilities and limitations of the use of special inks developed from four-colour printing inks. (8.955) Postfach 13 07 BASF Drucksysteme GmbH newspaper techniques 19258 Boizenburg, Germany http://www.basysprint.de offers the newspaper industry its UVSetter 57-Z, a CTcP system that uses UV light to image conventional offset printing plates. (CTcP stands for Computer-to-conventional-Plate.) This corresponds to the wish of many newspaper printers who want to retain conventional, tried and tested plate technology. – The user can use this system to digitally expose his conventional plates. The UV-Setter 57-Z is an automatic system that can be flexibly integrated into the existing workflow. Advantages of the CTcP solution include the continue utilisa- IFRA 2000 September 2000 sion of the interfaces in the M-Drive controller integrates the drive synchronisation software module. The M-Drive digital individual drive controller is the core of the Sync-Drive Technology concept that was developed for the graphics industry. With the new options card, the MDS individual axle controller now also manages all synchronisation tasks. In addition to drive control, the MDS takes on leading axle functions or, as group master, synchronises all assigned following axles. Up to now, this function was realised on additional hardware, the Sync-Drive Controller. MDS allows the synchronised operations of more direct drives with less hardware – a total of more than 10,000 axles. Therefore, more extensive use can be made of the direct drive technology in printing presses, and numerous additional press functions are available with the aid of smaller, decentralised drive units. With the open interfaces of the two controller versions M-Drive Controller (MDC) and M-Drive Section Controller (MDS), such as Sercos, Arcnet, Profibus or Ethernet, the drive system is connected to different controls of the higher-ranking process level. Another highlight of the M-Drive is the special process for the sensor evaluation (from position up to acceleration sensors). tion of existing plate processors as well as operation under daylight working conditions. According to the manufacturer, the modular use of the UV-Setters 57-Z permits a high plate throughput: the UV-Setter 57-Z achieves a throughput of more than 100 plates per hour, thereby providing the user the advantages of CTP combined with proven plate technology. – Other products on the basysPrint stand will be the Harlequin Compose RIP as well as, for the proofing sector, Cromalin (DuPont), Colour Art (Fuji) and ink sheets (UV light-sensitive films from the Japanese Toyo Ink company that can be exposed on production paper). > Baumüller Anlagen (8.946) Systemtechnik GmbH & Co. Ostendstr. 84 90482 Nürnberg, Germany http://www.baumueller.com will present the Baumüller Baudis 4.0 diagnostic system for digital drive technology, now with drive browser: the Baudis remote diagnostic and maintenance system works as a drive explorer for the drive architecture of complex machines. The latest extension of the user interface, besides the graphic interface, offers the user a browser that allows direct access to all drive data. The MWM-system solution is based on modern database technology in combination with both Java and JSP (Java Server Pages) applications together with TCP/IP communication. It fully supports IFRAtrack, being able to send, receive and interpret IFRAtrack messages. Udnyt muligheden for at fokuserer på „Forbrugsmaterialet“ samtidig med, at du besøger DDPFF’s Tekniske Dag i København. newspaper techniques two new products: the MWM Product Planning Tool and the MWM Distribution Tool. – The MWM Product Planning Tool organises products, both commercial and editorial, that the newspaper is planning to produce and distribute weeks and months ahead. This gives the newspaper the opportunity to maximise commercial inserting, modify distribution plans, optimise the usage of the mailroom and always know what, how and when a product is to be produced and distributed. The tool has different interfaces for different users based on what information they are most interested in. This enables the user to get information in a quick and easy way without jumping between systems and windows. – The MWM Distribution Tool allows a company to take control of the whole distribution chain from loading to delivery. It includes planning, managing, tracking and analysing all parts of the distribution process. It integrates information from press and mailroom systems with information from transportation and delivery in one single tool. The tool can be integrated with a wide range of different tools such as: GIS (Geographic Information Systems), mobile telephones with WAP or SMS (Short Message System), PDA's, voice response systems, etc. – for gathering, planning and distribution information within the organisation. It also includes an eDistributionbooklet (electronic carrier district information booklet). The MWM Distribution Tool allows a newspaper to distribute more efficiently and secure and to be able to optimise and analyse the outcome of every night's distribution. > NAPP Systems (9.471) (Europe) Ltd Reserver derfor snarest tirsdag den 4. september og onsdag den 5. september! IntelliPlanner, an application fully developed in Java, helps to plan the editorial content of a publication, assign subjects and tasks to single newspaper sections as well as to individual ones, organise stories within sections and pages, and attribute priorities to the articles to determine their position on the page. – As an IFRA 2000 September 2000 additional component of the Planner, there is IntelliPage that proposes page layouts to be used in live production. – The NPS (Newspaper Publishing System), available on both Mac and Windows platforms, controls the acquisition of material from news and photo agencies, as well as all incoming articles from free-lancers and reporters. It also controls the selection of photos, their cropping, scaling and positioning on the page. Page layout is tightly integrated with the text editor. The system is based on standard software and hardware components. – The Multi-Object Archive stores and indexes images, advertising graphics, info graphics, unformatted texts, agency news, articles, headlines, captions, single pages and entire publications. A userfriendly interface facilitates the search of the archived material. – With the advent of the Internet, Sinedità says the conventional client-server configuration early adopted for single applications is now replaced by Intranet-based applications. In particular, the access to several databases containing the material for the daily production and the permanent archive are now available at a low cost to all newsrooms; also to those who are located in remote offices and want to access the vast amount of information centrally stored on one repository. – Beside the tools for the traditional publishing, Sinedità has built a couple of applications for the web publishing arena: – PressOnLine is aimed at automatically reproducing on the web an HTML copy of the printed newspaper content; PDF copies of the entire publication are also available. – WebMate is the application that publishers can use to create community services online. It contains all the basic tools necessary for authoring and editing contents for such a service. Because it is fully based on Internet technology, a user can create web pages and administer the site when remotely located. Above line can be connected to all the existing type of stackers of production lines. – The Sitma 978B Covermounting Unit has been especially designed for the synchronised picking up and depositing of rigid or flexible items onto the main product with a timing movement. Due to the special motion of the pick-up section, the machine picks up the product from the hopper using suction cups which extract the product during the stop/pause timing of the process; extracts the product from the hopper with a rotating action of the pick-up arm; and deposits the item onto the main product at a constant speed and with good timing (on request it can be glued onto the base product). The unit can be installed onto any Sitma mailing line instead of a hopper feeder, as well as onto other lines. That is no longer the case today. With the (genuine) shaftless technology, the presses behave very differently from before and new developments have focused especially on the drawback of the four-high tower that has existed up to now. Consequently, today the fan-out effect on the Wifag fourhigh tower is controllable. Wifag will highlight the equal value of both concepts – i.e. ten-cylinder, satellite respectively, and four-high tower – in relation to quality.
