Rider Conduct and Etiquette
1. We conduct our Ride events with the highest safety concerns in mind and as such all
riders must adhere to the following legal rules:
a. Must use an Australian compliance helmet. No helmet or no compliance – no ride. The
Event Management team many of whom are Cycling Coaches and Ride Captains have
the right to enforce this legal ruling per WA Road Rules.
b. Must have a BRIGHT Front and Rear Light as this is a NIGHT RIDE. No lights no ride and
the brighter you are the better. We will conduct Spot Prizes to reward those who are
brightly lit as this promote our conduct of safety on the road.
c. Wear BRIGHT clothing as you want to be seen from afar and in the darkness of the night
– BLACK, DARK RED, DARK BLUE, BROWN colours CANNOT be seen and should not be
worn. The brighter you are the better.
2. We expect that your bike will be road worthy as there are no mechanical support crew
for this metropolitan based event. If you have a mechanical and are reached by the
Lanten Rouge rider – you will be required to cease formal participation in this event.
Please read the instructions about pulling out or non-completion in this section later. It
is important to check that your brakes are working and that your gears (if any) are also
working. Once again bikes with no functional brakes will be prevented from riding in
this event per WA Road Rules regulations.
3. Please remember that you are riding for a cause and that cause is for the MS Society of
WA. As such you are all ambassadors for their charity cause and as ambassadors we
expect that you will uphold the road rules and show common sense and courtesy to
your fellow road users and pedestrians along the way.
4. Sectors such as South Perth near the South Perth Streats and along the South Perth
foreshore as well as Elizabeth Quay will have families and little ones along the pathways.
Please show that what respectable cyclists do and share the pathways with them.
5. At sections of road which is narrow or if you are uncertain you MUST always ride single
file and never more than two abreast. That said common sense also applies that you
should not hold up faster traffic so giving them way is the best thing to do to avoid any
angst or road rage against you.
6. Two water bottles are recommended for this ride noting that the toilet stops where
there are public taps are also indicated clearly in this Guide.
7. It is compulsory that you carry your MOBILE PHONE with you with the assigned number
as indicated at the time of registration. If you are unable to contact you – we reserve
the right to contact your Next-Of-Kin and to avoid unnecessary stress to them – please
do so.
8. Provide other road users and your fellow cyclists with your clear intention and sound
out if you are TURNING LEFT, TURNING RIGHT or SLOWING DOWN or if you are
OVERTAKING others. It is better to be anticipatory rather than reactive as this leads to
accidents on the road.
Unfinished or DNF (Did Not Finish) Riders
If for whatever reason you choose to abandon your ride on route you need to inform the Event
Management team the following via TEXT:
a. Name (First and Last Night)
b. Distance (40 km or 70 km)
c. Location that you abandoned the ride (Suburb or Land mark)
Text to either one of the following:
Ian Wee Event Director / Medic #1 – 0412 184 318
Steve George Event Manager – 0400 440 871
Jacqui Tan – Roving Sector Chief – 0411 015 186
Lucy Liongue – Medic #2 – 0448 332 168
All riders MUST program these 4 crucial numbers in their Mobile Phones for this event.
Medical Emergencies
As we are in the Perth Metro region this is what you should do in the event of a medical
emergency:
a. Potential Life Threatening situations – Assisted Situation. Dial Emergency 000 and
inform the operator of the approximate location. Ways to determine this would be
which sector the rider has passed by and also checking on their bike computer the
approximate distance from the start. Provide Name / Mobile number to the operator.
In this situation either the Event Director or Event Manager needs to be notified.
b. Minor Injuries. Determine if you or the other rider is able to ride. Contact one of the
two Medics who will determine which one is in closer proximity to render assistance:
(1) Ian Wee – Medic #1 – 0412 184 318
(2) Lucy Liongue – Medic #2 – 0448 332 168
Otherwise approach the nearest Sector Chief who are located at most Bridges for
assistance.
c. Should you or the other rider choose to abandon the ride as a result of an accident and
are conscious – then the protocol for DNF should be activated.
Signage
The GREEN signage is for 70 km riders only. Please remember the color
The BLUE signage is for 40 km riders only. Please remember the color.
Note in sectors where you see BOTH Green and Blue signage means that they are common
routes for the 40 km and 70 km sectors.
Hazards
There are locations where it is darker especially along the Belmont Foreshore (70 km),
Peninsula in Maylands (70 km), near to the return trip of the Narrows (40 km and 70 km) as well
as near to the Mt Henry Estate horseshoe bridge and the return sector of Canning River. These
areas will also have additional CAUTION tape at the turn points and hazard areas and all riders
are reminded to exercise extreme caution in these sectors.
As the majority of the route is on registered and paved Bike Pathways – riders can also expect
to encounter many POLES and Road Calming obstacles on route. Once again practice courtesy
and sound out for these hazards as you approach them so that the riders behind can learn
about them on route.
All STOP and CAUTION SLOW signs must be adhered to and especially in the dark when visibility
is much less. The effect of Bright Lights makes your signature on the road so much better
hence why we encourage lights day or night.
The East Perth Bridge (70 km) is a pedestrian bridge and as such all cyclists MUST dismount and
walk across this bridge please.
Walk across bridge in East Perth – all 70 km riders must dismount and walk across

Working on an average of 20 km/h for 70 km riders – you have approximately 3.5 hours of
moving time from 7 pm to 715 pm to complete the required distance.
Note that MOVING TIME does not account for time taken off the bike for drink / toilet stops /

Identification Bands
The 40 km riders will be identified with the Red & White wrist bands supplied by MSWA here:
40 km riders wrist bands
The 70 km riders will be get the less glamorous (!) but functional YELLOW or GREEN wrist bands
for their identification purposes.
Important Bridge Points
Both 40 km and 70 km riders will approach Mt Henry Bridge crossing at Beamish Avenue and
travel underneath Mt Henry Bridge on the south side and turn down to The Esplanade there.
There are toilet facilities at this location.
Riders will be travelling north on The Esplanade
and cross by the Swan River Rowing Club and travel underneath Canning Bridge and loop back
up to cross on top of it and then join the Kwinana PSP leading to Perth. 40 km and 70 km riders.
Narrows Bridge Sector
Riders will turn off just before the public toilets located adjacent to the on ramp of the Narrows
Bridge and head off underneath the Narrows Bridge on route to South Perth foreshore. This is
the common route for both the 40 km and 70 km riders.
Those wishing to indulge in the South Perth Streats are reminded of their operational times this
Friday:
The Causeway is critical for both 40 km and 70
km riders as this is the separation point for both distances. 40 km riders will ride ACROSS the
Causeway heading for Elizabeth Quay. The 70 km riders will head towards the direction of
Crown Casino along the bike pathway which takes them to Windan Bridge
FOR THE 70 KM RIDERS ONLY!
70 KM riders will find the route through to Windan
Bridge a little different with the WA State government carving up this sector for the pedestrian
bridge across the Swan River. You will ride on newly paved bike pathways which are shared
with pedestrians through what was the old Burswood Golf complex and on your RIGHT you will
see the development of the new Perth Stadium in the background.
When approaching Windan Bridge -take the furthest pathway which goes UNDERNEATH the
bridge. You will come to a sharp turn RIGHT which takes you up the ramp onto the Graham
Farmer Freeway bike pathway where you turn LEFT and head towards the Belmont foreshore
70 km riders turn into Balbuk Way and
ride to the end of the road and it is clearly marked with signage where the bike pathway
commences adjacent to the toilet block on the right. This sector is DARK and the sharp corners
have been marked with Caution reflective tape for your safety. Travel slowly through this
sector.
70 km riders will need to ride through Ascot
Water estate which is clearly marked and travel along Waterway Crescent (which curves a long
way) to a roundabout with Garrett Road. Follow the signs marked clearly and cross just at the
roundabout and follow the bike pathway that takes you on Garrett Road Bridge. Once again
Caution tape is clearly marked at the end of the bridge in preparation for a SHARP turn RIGHT
down the ramp onto the bike pathway. Turn RIGHT and ride under Garrett Road Bridge here.
This sector you are travelling will take you through a dark marshland which is quietly beautiful
and peaceful. You can hear the birds in the rushes by the Swan River banks here and you need
to have your lights on BRIGHT as you ride through this marshland sector called BAIGUP
Wetlands on route to what is a slight incline up before you turn RIGHT after the safety poles
onto Swan View Terrace.
For 40 km and 70 km riders
Sector Chiefs will be located at this Sector until 10 pm. Please report in to them on route for
both the 40 km and 70 km riders. Once you reach Elizabeth Quay you have THREE ways
through it and at your pleasure. The first is to CROSS the now famous bridge which spans
across Elizabeth Quay. If there is a crowd we advise that you dismount and walk across the
bridge. The second is along Geoffrey Bolton Avenue which is right where the NIGHT NOODLES
MARKET are operating. Stop there for some food but remember that at 10 pm everything cuts
off and you will be DNF if you are still here. The third and fastest as the road which rings around
the inner perimeter and it is called The Esplanade (not to be confused with the same name in
Mt Pleasant!). This is the ACTUAL route through the city which takes you pass Transperth and
the Convention Centre before the road becomes Mounts Bay Road (you are riding counter flow
to the road traffic on the bike pathway so all is OK). Once you have crossed UNDERNEATH the
Narrows Bridge at this sector you then follow the signs which take you back to another sector
of the Narrows Bridge heading towards Canning Bridge. If all else fails – head towards the
Narrows Bridge and ride SOUTH wards towards Canning Bridge and you are back on track!
Follow the black lines which is the bike pathway through The Esplanade in Perth City towards
the bike pathway to Narrows Bridge. For both 40 km and 70 km riders.
Mt Henry Estate – Horseshoe Bridge – return journey for both 40 km and 70 km riders. Once
you have reached this sector turn RIGHT onto the Horseshoe Bridge which spans across the
Kwinana Freeway and ride up the ramp and down the ramp on the opposite side to Gentilli Way
which is in Salter Point. Follow the signs in this sector.
Follow the Red Arrows in the diagram below through the Salter Point – Manning Sector.
From Gentilli Way ride towards a roundabout at Mt Henry Road and turn RIGHT
Turn LEFT at Roebuck Drive (you will see the playing fields of Aquinas College on your right)
Turn RIGHT at Redmon Street and ride till the very end of the road.
The road veers to the LEFT and becomes River Way
Turn RIGHT on Hope St
Turn LEFT onto Salter Point Parade – ride to the end and turn RIGHT into the bike pathway that
takes you adjacent along Canning River.
