T
here’s only one thing about his
AFL career that irks Brad Fisher
as much as being stranded on 99
games.
It’s the number of Finals
matches he played among
those 99.
“Not a single one,” confirmed
Fisher, who accrued just 32 wins
across eight seasons for Carlton in
a career which coincided with one
of the Blues’ darkest eras.
“I’ve played the last two VFL
Grand Finals (for the Northern
Bullants) which we lost both, but no
Finals for Carlton.”
He is keen to make amends.
Delisted by the Blues at the end of
2010, the 192cm mobile, strongmarking key forward spoke with
more than 50 clubs before signing
a two-year deal with West Adelaide
last December.
“I wouldn’t have been too
while, but once I had my cards
dealt (delisted by Carlton), I
wanted to play in the best footy
league I could, which I knew was
the SANFL.
“They (West) got in touch with me
through Harts (Adam Hartlett) and I
was immediately impressed with
the facilities and the direction of
the club.
“We’ve got a young, strong list and

is shaping things nicely.”

bid for the 100-game milestone,

“I ummed and ahhed for a

before he was recalled to Carlton’s
line-up for its Round 18 clash with
eventual premier Collingwood at
the MCG in front of 76,980 fans.
The Magpies won easily and
Fisher was dropped. His 99th
match was his last.
It didn’t matter that the very next
weekend he bagged 10 goals as his
Bullants thrashed Frankston in the
VFL. There would be no AFL recall
and Fisher’s name would never join
the likes of Rod Ashman and
Michael Sexton on the No. 14 locker
at Visy Park.
“I’ve been around long enough
to understand how the game
goes,” said Fisher, who rated
Collingwood premiership defender
Harry O’Brien as his toughest
opponent. “I’m disappointed but not
overly surprised and just have to
move on.
“In my first few years I was getting
games ahead of older guys who
were better than me so last year I
understood they were getting
games into the younger players.”
While Fisher, 27, hasn’t
completely given up his AFL dream,
he remains a realist.
“I’d love to get back into the
system,” he said.
“While it does leave a sour taste
in my mouth, I had eight years at
the club which I loved every minute
and now I want to play the best
footy that I can here.”

SECONDARY SCHOOL SPORT SA/SANFL
‘OPEN SCHOOLS CUP’
T
he Open Schools Cup is the premier competition of SA
school football for open aged boys. Rostrevor College as
the first ranked team from the Sports Association for Adelaide
Schools competition went straight into the grand final. The
second ranked team, Prince Alfred College, played in the semi
final against the winner of the Secondary School Sport SA
(SSSSA) Secondary Schools Cup Open Boys Pool A
competition – Henley High School.
The weather this year during the finals was particularly wet
resulting in the semi final being moved away from Woodville
Oval in order to protect its surface for SANFL League
matches. The match at SMOSH Oval was played in heavy
conditions with both schools fielding very strong teams. PAC
led by a meagre two points at half time. PAC kicked 5.6 with
the breeze in the third quarter with Henley failing to add to
their total. Full time saw PAC comfortable winners 9.14 to
Henley’s 3.6.
For the first time in over 30 years, the grand final of the
Secondary School Sport SA/SANFL Open Schools Cup was
not played at Norwood Oval due to problems with one of their
light towers. The match was played on Tuesday, August 23 at
Prospect Oval between Prince Alfred and Rostrevor Colleges.
Both teams came into this match with very strong credentials.
PAC won this competition last year however was defeated by
Rostrevor both times they played each other in 2011.
The match was played on a perfect winter evening with mild
temperatures and no wind. Both teams made strong and
committed starts with Rostevor showing early dominance
finishing the first quarter with a 2.3 to 0.2 lead. It appeared
that Rostrevor’s superiority over PAC during the season was
going to continue as they maintained their intensity during the
second quarter to finish the first half 4.5 to PAC’s 1.4.
Despite being behind, PAC’s persisted in their endeavours
throughout the third quarter to slowly claw back Rostrevor’s
lead to be only trailing by two straight kicks at the end of the
quarter (Rostrevor 6.7 – PAC 4.7).
The scene was set for a great last quarter. PAC had a very
busy playing schedule in recent weeks so could have been
expected to be over run by the quality Rostrevor team. The
crowd sensed that it was anybody’s match and became more
and more vocal. Outstanding football was played by both
teams with the last score of the match placing PAC one point
ahead with only a couple of minutes to play. Both teams had
their chances to score in those last minutes so the result could
have gone either way. PAC held on to their one-point lead to
take out the match 7.8 to Rostrevor 7.7.
The match was an excellent showcase of quality school
football with both teams strongly supported by a crowd of
approximately 1,500.
Josh Gregg (captain of Prince Alfred College) won the Colin
Steinert Medal for his Best on Ground performance in the
grand final.

WITHOUT THEM, THE GAME WOULDN’T HAPPEN

he weekly pilgrimage to our local
football ground provides an
opportunity to take out the stresses
of the week, enjoy a beer and a pie
with sauce.
At least that’s what it used to be! I
go to the footy now and see the diehard fans with a can of West End
and a pie or dinkum dog, but I also
see something very foreign.
Members of the football fraternity
enjoying a cappuccino on the hill
with a salad sandwich – don’t they
know where they are?
You would expect to see this kind
of behaviour in the Family Friendly
areas but not on the hill or the
designated/traditional area. Don’t get
me wrong the Family Friendly areas
are an absolutely fantastic initiative
and it is great to see so many young
people being introduced to our great
game of SANFL football.
They are the future and they
need to be looked after and treated
to a positive and welcoming
environment.
However it is a different story on
the hill and I just can’t bring myself
to sip on a ‘cino and enjoy a light
and refreshing healthy meal – it just
doesn’t make sense to me!
Along with these rituals, a punter
traditionally went to the football
expecting to give the men in white a
serve.

We know in the modern game that
this is not accepted! The umpires
play a vital part in the game and as
we have been told right throughout
our junior sporting careers, the
game wouldn’t happen without
them.
It is for this reason that I
thought I should venture down
to SANFL HQ and pay a visit to
the state umpiring manager
Shane Harris and get the latest
on what is happening in officiating
circles.
Milestones all round
While we promote player
milestones with banners and in the
media I found out about some
significant umpiring milestones that
have happened this season.
Evergreen officiator Richard
Williams this season umpired his…
and wait for it… 450th match as a
field umpire. What an achievement!
When you think that there are a
maximum of 27 rounds a season –
450 is incredible.
He was joined by Colin Rowston
who officiated his 300th field match.
Once again a rare number to reach
and highlights the dedication of
these guys to the League.
Shannon Riggs and Leo Corrieri,
two of the SANFL’s finest goal
umpires, also celebrated milestones
enjoying their 200th matches
between the sticks.
As the players, coaches and clubs
ramp up to be apart of September
action the umpires are also trying to
steel themselves for the major
round.
Harris said there were a number of
things the umpires would be
focussing on in the final three
rounds, but the most important point
was letting the game flow.
“Our main aim is to allow the
players to play the match they are
put out there to play,” Mr Harris said.
“We want to allow the players to
put on a show and we only interfere
when the laws are broken or a
player’s safety is at risk.”

The umpire’s have five focuses
leading into the Finals according to
Harris:
• We must protect the ball player by
paying the first obvious free kick
• We must ensure we delay the
whistle allowing the play to unfold
and only react to the obvious and
blatant frees
• If a player drags the ball in or
dives on the ball, delay the whistle
and if the ball doesn’t come out
penalise for holding the ball
• If all players are hard at the ball
let them play football by only
penalising the obvious free kick
• We must be diligent with the man
on the mark who wants to crib
over the mark or cut the corner of
the marks preventing the player
with the ball playing on.
Good luck to all of the umpires for
the rest of the season and let’s make
sure we give them the same go we
give the players!
Good news story
I visited Unleash Solar Oval on
Saturday to see the Eagles massacre
Glenelg. The highlight of the day
though came before the League
match.

and on further investigation it turns
out to be a good news story.
The two players, who were playing
with the Eagles Reserves side, were
the first-ever footballers from the
Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara
(APY) Lands to play SANFL football.
Amos Frank and Kieran Roberts,
who are from the remote Aboriginal
community in the state’s north, had
impressive SANFL debuts.
Roberts tallied 12 possessions and
had three shots on goal, kicking one
major. Frank collected 13 disposals
and kicked two goals.
In even better news for the pair
they have been invited back to the
club for pre-season training in 2012! I
am sure there is plenty of untapped
talent out there for the SANFL to
discover.

EAGLES ROMP TIGERS
T
he Eagles laid a genuine claim to
being mentioned in the same
sentence as Central and Norwood
with an emphatic 107-point
demolition of Glenelg on Saturday.
The win was the biggest in the
League this season and all but
secured the Eagles in third spot,
giving them a double chance in the
major round.
While you could have justified the
selection of a number of Eagles’
players it was Luke Jarrad who was
adjudged to be best-a-field.
Jarrad collected 31 disposals,
including 24 kicks, seven handballs,
six marks, eight inside 50s and a
goal.
Jarrad’s stellar effort earned him
five votes in the ‘be active’ Star
Player and R.O. Shearman Medal.
Judged by members of the SANFL’s
200 Club on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis for
every minor round match, the award
carries with it a $3000 first prize.
P.S. Three ‘Mystery Rounds’ have
been allocated during the course of
the year in which voting results will
be kept secret until the end of the
season.

2011 DUTSCHKE MEDAL

female footballer in a nailbiting count at AAMI
Stadium last Friday.

Adelaide Women’s
Football Club, Sampson
has played 43 games of
senior football since 2002.
Her sporting talents are
not restricted to football –
she has also represented
Medal winner Emma Sampson and
Australia in cricket and is

widely acknowledged as
one of the leading open
bowlers in Women’s World Cricket.
Sampson received the award from South Australian
women’s football pioneer and medal namesake, Gina
Dutschke. Runner-up was Cassie Hartley from the
Eagles Football Club.
The Dutschke Medal presentation was hosted by ABC’s
Peter Walsh and attended by South Australian women’s
football patron, The Hon. Kate Ellis, MP.

What is your favourite football moment?: Doing
the West Adelaide School Holiday Footy Clinic
because I got to be taught and meet West Adelaide
League players which was fun. My brother was
also one of the coaches which was good because I
could learn things from him about a sport that he
loved.
Also, meeting Hamish Hartlett and all the other
PAFC players after the games was a real thrill.
Future football aspirations: I am going to be the
first girl to play AFL because I know that I can do it
if I try really hard. If that doesn’t work out then I
want to do something to do with football or
another sport.

BLACKFOREST WINS MACCA’S PREMIERS CUP
C
ongratulations to Blackforest Primary School for
winning the 2011 Macca’s Premiers Cup Grand
Final on the weekend.
The match, played as a curtainraiser to the Port v
Western Bulldogs match at AAMI Stadium last Sunday,
was a closely-fought battle between two very skilful
primary school footy teams.
Blackforest (representing West Adelaide zone)
jumped out of the blocks with two early goals and
maintained a comfortable lead going into half time.
Ridgehaven Primary (a Norwood-zoned school) then
staged a great fightback to draw level late in the
second half, before Blackforest kicked away again to
take out the trophy.
Well done to all players, coaches, umpires and
volunteers involved in this year’s Macca’s Premiers
