MAGPIES’ DANIEL HARGRAVES
REACHES 150 GAMES

ort Adelaide Magpies’
Daniel Hargraves will play
his 150th SANFL League
match this weekend, ironically
against North Adelaide, the
club for which he played 126
of those games.
Hargraves’ football journey
began in 1994, when he was
drafted with selection number
27 in the AFL pre-season
draft to the Western Bulldogs
from the Eastern Ranges TAC
Cup team.
He played a total of 38 games
for the Bulldogs between 1994
and1997, kicking 64 goals
before being traded to the
Fremantle Dockers where,
primarily due to injury, he
played a further three AFL
games in 1998 and 1999.
Between 2000 and 2006,
Hargraves played for North
Adelaide, kicking a total of 391
goals, was the club’s deputy
vice-captain in 2003, and won
the Ken Farmer Medal as the
League’s highest goalkicker in
2002 with 68 majors.
Hargraves joined the Magpies
in 2007 and has played 23
games, kicking a total of 79
goals so far for the club.
Indeed, in 2008 the 32-yearold is enjoying one of his
best seasons in the
competition with 40 goals
already to his name, including
a bag of 10 against the Eagles
in Round Three.
Port Adelaide CEO Matthew
Richardson said, “to play 150
League games is a significant
achievement, and even though
Daniel has played only a few
games with our club, we
would like to congratulate him
on that achievement.
“Since joining the Magpies,
Daniel has averaged slightly
better than three goals a game,
which is above his SANFL
career average, and we could
not have asked for any more
from him to this point.”

INJURY FORCES CHRIS
LADHAMS’ RETIREMENT
N
orth Adelaide on-baller
Chris Ladhams can look
back on a wonderful career
after he announced his
retirement earlier this month.
After booting two majors
against the West Adelaide
Reserves in Round 11, the 27
year old Ladhams decided to
retire rather than continue to
battle a chronic neck injury,
which was hampering his
ability to perform at his usual
high standard.
The former Adelaide Crow
had struggled to overcome
the injury, which was
sustained during a boating
accident while fishing off
Moonta after Round Three.
In an attempt to regain some
form, Ladhams played with
Moonta before being named
in the Roosters’ squad to take
on Sturt at House Brothers
Oval in Round 10, however,
the injury forced Ladhams to
withdraw from the side.
Ladhams joined North as a
junior from the Gaza Football
Club, making his debut for the
League side in 1997.
‘Ladsy’ played 118 games for
the Roosters, predominantly
as an on-baller, although at
times he featured in the
forward lines, amassing an
impressive 158 goals.
Ladhams’ performances for
the Roosters reached a peak in
2004 when he was named Club
Champion, and he followed this
with another great year in 2005
to finish runner-up to Luke
Ivens in the prestigious award.
In the AFL, Ladhams spent two

Club, where he played his first
game in 2001, going on to kick
37 goals in 54 appearances.

match winner, which as every
football club knows are
really hard to find.
“He had it all and it is sad to
see him leave the game,
probably four years too early.
“Good luck to Chris, Kelly and
their baby Lilly in their future.”

Jarman said “Chris is a great
kid who I have watched since
Under 8’s at Gaza FC.
“He was one of the most
skilled players to play SANFL
in the last 10 years.”

FRESH ‘LEGS CURE TIM’S BLUES

E
arlier this year, Tim
Weatherald faced the
realisation his distinguished
League game career with the
club where it all began was
grinding to an inconspicuous
conclusion.
After 253 League games, the
former Sturt champion began
the agonising process of
deciding his future direction
in the game, which he loves
with an unashamed passion.
However, the 30-year-old is
well accustomed to the fate
that not only football, but also
life, can bring.
Just a matter of weeks after
bidding farewell to the place
where he was once revered
by the Double Blues’ faithful,
Weatherald returned to the
SANFL as Norwood’s newest
‘recruit’, signing on until the
end of the 2009 season.
Prior to his return to House
Brothers Oval for the Round 11
clash with his former teammates, Weatherald pondered on
how he might feel preparing for
battle in the opposition rooms,
when down the corridor his
name proudly adorns a locker
commemorating his years of
distinction in the number six
Sturt guernsey.
“I guess it’s going to be an
interesting feeling heading back
there,” Weatherald said in the
days leading up to the clash.
The Double Blues proved too
strong for a spirited Redlegs
side, winning by 17 points, but
Weatherald produced a fine
performance to finish high
amongst Norwood’s best.
Forever linked with Sturt’s
resurgence in the late 1990s,
none of those years
personified his character both
on and off the field more than
2002, when the thrill of
sharing the Magarey Medal
with then team-mate Jade
Sheedy was crowned with a
long awaited premiership.

And whilst the tragedy that
followed in Bali later that
month had been well
documented by many, it
wasn’t until late last year that
Weatherald found a sense of
solace in scribing his own
spectrum of emotions
surrounding the events that
unfolded during that time.
“Writing ‘Tim’s Story’ was my
way of not only coping with
what happened to me, but
giving the public an
understanding of what we all
went through as such young
men,” Weatherald explained.
“I had a lot of emotions
hanging over me for a long
time and putting these to
paper certainly helped me to
deal with them, and most
pleasing of all, has also
inspired many others involved
to open up their feelings.”
As for the latest chapter in
Weatherald’s football
chronicles, his arrival at
Norwood was the result of a
chain of events instigated by
John Cahill.
Cahill, in a bid to entice the
prematurely ‘retired’ on-baller
to Hickinbotham Oval,
unwittingly set up a chance
meeting with Norwood coach
Trevor Hill, which inturn led to
his signing as the Redlegs’
new midfield mentor.
So, following a fleeting few
weeks as a football-free family
man with wife Marnie and two
daughters, Katie and Lucy,
save for a cameo role with
Tumby Bay alongside former
Sturt comrade Michael Curtis,
Weatherald is now back
enjoying his other passion.
“In some ways it’s a big
gamble for a club to take on
an older player, but I’m
thrilled to be at Norwood and
continuing to play League
footy,” he said.
“There’s nothing quite like
the adrenalin rush of running

out onto the ground in front of
a big crowd and getting
amongst the action, but it’s not
only that.
“It’s the whole ‘family’
atmosphere around a football
club that I love so much.
“I had that at Sturt and I
have it here at Norwood.
“We’re a side with a lot of
talent but lack a bit of
experience, particularly
through the mid-field, so I
really feel I have something to
offer the club with a view to
their ongoing success.”
Weatherald said.
“We just need to find some
consistency in our
performances though.
“At present, the gap between
our best game and our worst
game is too great and to be a
real force we need to close
that and set the bar higher.
“If we can do that, then we
are a real chance to take on
the top three sides and win.”

our days out from Port
Adelaide Magpies’ season
opener against Central
District, Corey Ah Chee
received a bolt from the blue.
In the presence of teammates, coaches and club
officials for the senior players’
jumper presentation at
Alberton Oval, the shocked
27-year-old was handed the
Magpies’ coveted number one
guernsey as Port’s new
captain for 2008.
“I was told by Timmy
(Ginever) at our jumper
presentation,” said Ah Chee,
who had been a vice-captain
since 2003.
“Surprised would definitely be
the word to describe how I felt.”
Ah Chee replaced incumbent
Mark Clayton who, after some
initial disappointment, copped
the club’s decision on the
chin.
“Mark got over it pretty
quickly,” Ah Chee said, who
also celebrated becoming a
first-time parent in May when
his partner Lisa gave birth to
daughter Madison Rose.
“The big picture is to play in
the Grand Final.
“Mark realises himself that
with or without the captaincy,
playing in Grand Finals is
what it’s all about.”
The outsider’s perception of
Ah Chee paints the picture of
a reserved, self-effacing,
softly-spoken individual,
whose deeds, more so than
his words, would appear the
catalyst to lift his team-mates
to new heights.
But Ah Chee, who represented
the AFL Indigenous All-Stars
in 2003 and 2005 alongside
players like Adam Goodes,
Michael O’Loughlin and
Peter Burgoyne, believed he
was more than capable of
taking charge vocally in his
new role.
“I try to voice my opinions
when I see fit,” he said.
“We’ve got a number of
experienced guys around the
footy club so there’s plenty of
support and leadership.
“At the end of the day, if I
think something needs to be
said, I’ll call it as I see it.”
For Ah Chee, who works as a
storeperson for club sponsor
Interior Joinery and Furniture
(IJF), the captaincy at Port is
the latest in a swag of
honours he has received
during his decorated nineseason SANFL career.
Ah Chee made his League
debut aged 19 in 2000 after
transferring to Port from
famed NTFL club Darwin
Buffalos the previous year.
He swiftly developed from a
promising Reserves footballer
in 1999 into a State Team
representative in 2000,
selected to the SA squad with
just five League games under
his belt.
Ah Chee has been virtually
an automatic State selection
ever since.
In 2000, Ah Chee was chosen
as the Pies’ best first-year
player, beating out the likes of
current AFL stars Shaun
Burgoyne and Alan Didak.
The following season he
took out Port’s most improved
player and best-team-man
awards, before being named
the Magpies’ most consistent
player three years in a row,
from 2004-06.
Throughout most of his
career, Ah Chee has been one
of the competition’s best when
it comes to stopping goals,
and he’s considered by many
to be the SANFL’s premier fullback of the 21st century.
This season he hasn’t
stopped quite as many,
instead he’s been kicking
them himself.
“Timmy (Ginever) asked me
at the start of the season
where would I like to play,”
recalled Ah Chee, who in 2002
secured the A. R. “Bob” McLean
Medal as the Magpies’ Club
Champion.
“I said centre half-forward
and he told me what I needed
to work at and what he
expected from me.
“So far, so good.
“But I have no hesitation
going to full-back when Tim
asks me to.”
Spending substantial time at
centre-half-forward this
season has enabled Ah Chee
to fully showcase his
underrated kicking ability.
Ah Chee, who in the past has
performed the odd pinchhitting cameo stint up forward,
actually entered 2008 with a
career tally of 51 goals and 18
behinds from his 169 games.
That’s a remarkable 74 per
cent conversion, a strike rate
that compares favourably with
the greatest forwards of any era.
“I’ve always felt comfortable
kicking for goal,” Ah Chee said.
“If you take the mark inside
50, you should have the
confidence to have a shot and
kick the goal.”
Port supporters will be hoping
captain Corey’s confidence
rubs off on his teammates for
some time to come.

comfortable 47 point win over
the Panthers in last Saturday’s
clash at Prospect Oval.
Ward’s best-on-ground
performance saw him
rewarded with five votes in
the ‘be active’ Star Player and
R.O Shearman Medal.

round match, the award carries
with it a $3000 first prize.

asey Carr from the Port
Adelaide Magpies Football
Club has been named the
Round Twelve Coca-Cola Star
Search Award nominee.
In just his fourth League
match for the Magpies, Carr
was a standout in the
Magpies’ 36 point win against
West Adelaide on Sunday at
Broadspectrum Oval.
This attacking wingman’s
consistency throughout the
match earned him three goals
amongst his 14 possession
game. Carr’s ability to play in
a number of roles around the
ground has allowed him to
become a versatile player and
asset to the League team.
Making his League debut in
Round 8 this year against Sturt,
Carr has formed a strong
presence in the Magpies’
midfield. Recruited to the
Magpies in 2006, Carr went on
to play the majority of season
2007 in the Magpies Under 19
team, and a number of games
in the Reserves, before
representing the Magpies in
the Under 19’s premiership
team at AAMI Stadium.
Introduced last season, the
Coca-Cola Star Search Award
recognises the talented
youngsters making their mark
in League ranks.
On the completion of the
minor round, one of the 23
nominees will be chosen,
by the review panel as the
2008 Coca-Cola Star Search
Award Winner.

MAUGHAN THIEM AND THE MAGPIES –
WHAT A PARTNERSHIP!
S
ince 1972, Maughan Thiem has been a sponsor of the Port
Adelaide Magpies Football Club and a major partner for the
past 10 years. But what are the reasons behind the longevity of
a relationship that is one of the most respected within the
SANFL family? Peter Thomas, Dealer Principal for Maughan
Thiem, has provided some insights into this remarkable
partnership in sport.
“Maughan Thiem and the Magpies are two well established
local entities within the Port Adelaide community,” Peter said.
“We have similar cultures; we are passionate about local
football; we are close to Alberton and we both want to put
something back into the local community.
“It is a strong branding exercise for us, marrying two great,
well recognised brands within the Port Adelaide district.
“The Magpies have the largest membership base in the SANFL,
which creates lots of awareness for us, plus there is TV, jumper
identification, press and the website.
“The two management teams have a close working
relationship, abreast of all issues of mutual interest.”
While playing success enhances those relationships, Peter
believes sponsors have to go through the tougher times when a
club is not performing on the field.
As Peter commented, “when this occurs, Maughan Thiem’s
position is, how we can help the club to again be successful and
this also works in reverse.
“Partnership is the key word for me, for any sponsor/club
agreement to work at its optimum.”
With regards to the operations of Maughan Thiem, Peter said,
“we have a passion for the Ford product to be successful.
“Likewise, members of the Magpies footy club have the same
feelings for their team.
“Our strengths are the Magpie strengths.
“Maughan Thiem revolves around its committed staff, with
many having been with the company for over 20 years.
“We have been judged to be in the top 100 private companies
in SA.
“In five years’ time, we will be stronger and there will be growth.
“With Ford going down the road of the world concept cars and
new models being developed to address the alternative fuel issues,
we believe we have the RIGHT PRODUCT with the RIGHT DELIVERY.”
Peter, 49, was a footballer of note in his youth, having won the
Hone Medal for the Best and Fairest in the Amateur League
playing for Kilburn, mainly in the backline. He was a member of
the State Amateur team.
Peter also has a SANFL connection through his son, Daniel,
who is the State League Services Manager.
CALL TO ARMS – SATURDAY JUNE 28
T
his weekend is ‘Call to Arms’ and with no live AFL in
Adelaide it’s your chance to get your footy fix at the SANFL.
The League has decided to get behind this great cause, which
was initially adopted by the Essendon Football Club, who wore
yellow arm bands in respect for their team mate Adam
Ramanauskas and his fight against cancer.
As part of the campaign at each SANFL ground, the centre
circle will be painted yellow, goal umpires will have yellow flags,
and there will be collectors at each gate for anyone who would
like to make a donation.
In South Australia alone, almost 1000 Amateur League teams
have registered to support this great cause. If you haven’t
already done so this is your chance to make a contribution. So
get along to one of the four matches in Round 13, or log onto
