Located at Challenge Recruitment Oval on Brighton Road, Glenelg, the $1.3 million renovation of the Club’s gaming, bar and bistro areas commenced in late October. With phase one of the renovations already completed and opened to the public in March, the Club is eager to present the completion of the second and final phase at the launch on April 27. “This is a very exciting time for the Club,” Glenelg Chief Executive Officer Darren Chandler said. “New facilities, a new brand and quality customer service will give us an opportunity to be successful in a very competitive hospitality industry. “We now believe that we have a facility that our members, supporters and the local community can be very proud of, and most importantly enjoy the benefits.” The Club boasts a new gaming room with 40 machines and is open from 8am until 1am Monday to Wednesday, Thursday to Saturday from 8am until 2am, and Sundays from 11am to 11pm. The gaming room also features newly furnished lounge areas with LCD television and Keno. The bar has been extended and houses a custom pool table and features wide screen LCD televisions broadcasting Fox Sports Live. The Bay Bar has eight beers on tap, ranging from West End Draught through to James Squire’s Gold Nail. Furthermore, there is live entertainment in the bar every Friday and Saturday night with acoustic sessions on Sunday afternoons. The Bistro features an outdoor eating area overlooking Challenge Recruitment Oval and an expansive new menu. The launch includes a free coaching clinic with senior Glenelg players at 11am, and families are encouraged to stay and enjoy the great new menu in the Bay Bistro for Lunch from 12noon. A state representative at under 16 and under 18 levels, including gaining AllAustralian honours in the former and playing international rules against Ireland, Chad was drafted by the Crows in 2004, before being cut two seasons later. “Initially I struggled with soft tissue problems, mainly hamstring related after I put on weight at the Crows, then after 10 league games last year I dislocated my shoulder and went in for a reconstruction,” the 21-yearold Redleg said. “Now I’m focused on establishing myself at Norwood, and after undergoing surgery in June I have fully recovered and have had a good preseason, not missing a session and I expect to be fighting fit.” While Gibson has had a tough initiation into top level football, at 193cm he has height on his side, giving Norwood the option to use him in a key forward or defensive post, or as a backup ruckman. Growing up in Tea Tree Gully, Chad started in Norwood’s development squads before progressing through the junior grades, making his league debut late in the 2004 season against West Adelaide at Adelaide Oval as a 17-year-old. “My first game was a rollercoaster experience,” Gibson said. “It was a close match and with two minutes to go I kicked a goal, which put us in front, but with 30 seconds left West responded and we lost 6 by three points. “One minute I was feeling absolutely stoked, but after the game I was devastated. “It would have been a great way to start my league career. “I played the last three games that first season, but only added six more over the next two years.” While only having restricted time on the paddock, Gibson has been influenced by some of the best, including his first league coach at Norwood, Garry McIntosh, and Crows’ mentor Neil Craig. “When I started at Norwood it was great to have a coach like Garry, who was someone I’ve always looked up to,” Chad said. “To play my first league game under him was an honour and Neil Craig is a mastermind. “Everything he says has real impact. “Two players who have been mentors are Ben Rutten at the Crows and Stuart Bown at Norwood. “Both are a similar height to me and I love their professionalism, they both have great attitudes and are good role models for me to follow. “I’m enjoying playing under Trevor Hill and with the likes of Jarrod Cotton, Brodie Atkinson and Trevor Potts as assistants, they bring something new to the club, which is refreshing.” As a youngster Gibson suffered from asthma so he took up swimming, while also enjoying sparring in the boxing gym. The young Redleg believed the time he spent swimming allowed him to have a football career. “With the breathing problems I had as a child, swimming allowed me to build up my fitness base and combat the affects of asthma,” he said. SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - ROUND 4 - LEAGUE FOOTY Chad Gibson “I still swim at every chance I get. “As for boxing, it was just something I loved, and up to the age of 16 I used to spar at the Lodge Boxing Club at St. Agnes. “I’ve steered away while playing footy as it requires different training, but I wouldn’t mind returning to the sport one day.” The SA Crowhurst apprentice plumber has never played in a winning grand final side, and while team success is his main goal, representing his beloved Redlegs for the long term is his number one objective. “I want to play as much as I can for Norwood and keep my guernsey as long as possible,” Gibson said. “Every league game so far has been great and because of the injuries I probably cherish them more than others may.” PORT’S KRISTIAN DEPASQUALE Port Adelaide Magpies’ Kristian DePasquale kicks under pressure during the round two clash with South Adelaide at Alberton Oval. After tasting victory for the first time against the Eagles last week, DePasquale and his Magpie team-mates will be looking to establish some winning momentum in Sunday’s intriguing home match with North Adelaide. SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - VISIT: WWW.SANFL.COM.AU 7 HARGRAVES’ 10 GOALS HARGRAVES BAGS 10 FOR MAGPIES P ort Adelaide Magpies’ spearhead Daniel Hargraves inspired his side to their first win of the 2008 SANFL season in last week’s clash with the Eagles at Woodville Oval. In a remarkable display of strong marking and clinical finishing, Hargraves booted 10 majors from just 10 marks and 14 kicks to lead the Magpies to an impressive 43 point win over Ron Fuller’s side. The 32 year old is already recognised as one of the most lethal goalkickers in the competition, with 443 goals from 141 appearances. But a 10 goal haul in the modern day arena is indeed a rare achievement for any forward. After consecutive losses in the opening two rounds, the 8 pressure was mounting on Tim Ginever’s side as they faced an Eagles outfit on their home patch, equally determined to notch up a first victory. Although the Eagles kicked the opening three goals of the match, they had no answer to the rampant Hargraves as the Magpies gradually settled to take control of the match by halftime. The fast leading Hargraves was a constant threat with his ability to find space in the Eagles’ defence, consistently taking advantage of his teammates accurate delivery. With Hargraves in this kind of form, the Magpies might just have the goal scoring capabilities to mount a serious challenge in what is shaping as another tight SANFL competion. SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - ROUND 4 - LEAGUE FOOTY The Magpies’ Daniel Hargraves PROFILE: MARK MICKAN A TIGER MAN FOR THE AGES BY STEVE BARRETT W hen it comes to football, off-field stability invariably leads to on-field success. That is the informed view of Glenelg mentor Mark Mickan who, despite being in just his third season at the helm, is set to become the Bays’ longestserving coach since Graham Cornes (1985-90). “I think it’s an unfortunate statistic for the club,” Mickan said of the fact 10 men have held the Tigers’ volatile head coaching reigns since 1991. “To be able to plan and strategically set up a club, you need the same person in the role for a longer period of time. That high turnover was something I wasn’t aware of until recently. “We’ve since tried to keep stability as much as possible at every grade and every level so our coaches can carry out their responsibilities as effectively as possible.” Mickan secured a 12-month extension after last season on top of his original three-year deal, ensuring he remains at the Bay until the end of 2009 and meaning only Neil Kerley (10 years) and Cornes (six) will have served for longer in the club’s 88-year history. The quadruple West Adelaide best-and-fairest winner earned himself the extension following Glenelg’s Lazarus-like comeback in 2007, in which the Tigers emerged from a woeful 1-6 start to come within a straight kick of contesting the preliminary final. The Bays tasted defeat just twice across the season’s last 14 rounds, enjoying an average winning margin of 43.4 points during that sequence. “We spent a lot of time in practice games (last year) experimenting new, young players,” Mickan said of his side’s tardy opening. “That’s worth doing to a degree but we overdid it a little bit. “We also highlighted the starts of games which hurt us. We improved on that and this season we have placed a big emphasis on being physically and mentally ready.” If Glenelg can build further on the ground it made last year and enjoy sustained success in the years to come, Mickan, a SA Football Hall of Famer, has plenty of individual incentive to stick around and rejoice in the potential spoils. For all he has accomplished in the sport since arriving in the big smoke from Renmark in 1981, Mickan still has one box unchecked on his career résumé. A premiership. “From a personal point of view, that (winning a flag) is my biggest driving force, for sure,” said a candid Mickan, the first-ever captain of the Brisbane Bears in 1987 and the Adelaide Crows’ inaugural club champion in 1991. He’s been close before. Mickan was desperately unlucky to miss out on West Adelaide’s famous 1983 premiership after tearing the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the final minor round game, before playing in a losing grand final for West eight years later. As Woodville-West Torrens coach in 1998-99, Mickan helped turn the club’s fortunes around, but it wasn’t until after he left to join the Adelaide Crows as ruck coach that the Eagles really capitalised on the 1988 AllAustralian’s groundwork. If the ultimate reward does come Glenelg’s way, Mickan wants a piece of it. “That (a premiership) is now not just a personal goal, it’s a shared goal,” he said. “That’s a nice position given that everyone wants it, not just me.” Mark Mickan SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - VISIT: WWW.SANFL.COM.AU 9 PROUDLY SOUTH AUSTRALIA’ AS NO.1 . The Chief Secretary of SA, Sir Lyell McEwin KBE, performed the opening ceremony of the ground. West Adelaide, in front of some 16,000 spectators, then went on to claim their first win on the hallowed turf, defeating their neighbours, the West Torrens Football Club, by ten points in a wonderful contest. BY: TOM HICKS JOSH COULTER DATE OF BIRTH: 23/4/81 POSITION: BACKLINE - MAINLY FULL-BACK. CLUB: NORTH ADELAIDE Nickname (and its origins): ‘Coults’ from my surname like most footy nicknames. As a boy I supported: Port Magpies. My most memorable football moment is: Winning the Preliminary Final and making the Grand Final it was awesome just to get in. I’d rather forget the game when: We lost the Grand Final last year. I’m praised for: Voice on the field, constantly encouraging team-mates when the ball is away from me. I’m not so good at: Kicking straight drop punts. My football style could be compared to: Nathan Steinberner, as a youngster I modelled my game off his running style and ability to break lines. The best young player at my club is: Rhys O’Keefe, he’s one to watch. The SANFL’s most exciting player is: Chris Ladhams, because of the freaky things he can do when he’s on his game. The best advice given: Leave no stone unturned and don’t cut corners in life. A nightmare room-mate would be (and why): Shane Schubert, because you would get no sleep and feel very sick in the morning. My long lost twin is: Brett White. When I’m at a nightclub you’ll find me: Sitting on a nice couch observing the crowd. Schnitzel or Carpaccio of Tuna? Schnitzel. My biggest fashion mistake was: The T-Shirt I bought on our recent team trip to Canberra, it was a shocker. Something my team-mates may not know about me: I’m a very serious person. In my future I see: A premiership with North Adelaide, hopefully. Besides playing football my ambition in life has always been to: Have kids and further my skills and knowledge as a teacher. I play in the SANFL because: Josh Coulter It is a fantastic competition, it is a lot of fun and you are also testing yourself against the second highest level of players in the country.
