GLOBAL STRATEGY FOR THE ROAD
AHEAD p6
Adam McClelland, Territory Manager, Ottawa Branch
On Friday, June 13th, the Ottawa branch was proud to
host a press conference to celebrate the purchase of
a new CAT® D6K XL with a Multi Shank Ripper. This D6K
headed off to Kenya in August.
Adam McClelland, Territory Manager of the Ottawa
Branch said, “The Operating Engineers Training Institute
of Ontario approached me about a year ago in regards
to purchasing a used D5N XL to ship to an orphanage in
Kenya. They were participating in a fund raising campaign
co-chaired with Mike Gallagher, Business Manager, for the
IUOE, and MPP Kevin Flynn from Oakville. Fortunately, the
fundraising far surpassed their wildest dreams, enabling
them to purchase a brand new unit – a D6K XL.”
IUOE Business Manager, Mike Gallagher, stated, “The
fundraiser for this dozer was a huge undertaking but
Local 793, along with other building trades and unionized
contractors in Ontario’s construction industry, accomplished
the mission and made it an overwhelming success. There
is an old African proverb that states: ‘The pillar of the world
is hope.’ I feel that we are we are providing hope and a
brighter future for a generation of Kenyan orphans.”
The recipient of the dozer was The Mully Children’s
Foundation. The MCF was founded by Charles Mully
whose rags-to-riches story began when he himself was
left abandoned in Kenya at an early age. He eventually
became a wealthy businessman who chose to sell

his holdings and turn his attention to rehabilitating the
abandoned, abused street children in his homeland. The
foundation will be utilizing the new dozer to excavate and
build dams to retain rainwater, build fish ponds, clear land
for the building of greenhouses, build roads and other
developmental projects.

Caterpillar ® introduces the D7E — the first electric
drive track-type tractor using modern technology. The
revolutionary electric drive system developed for tracktype tractors gives the D7E an optimum balance of power,
efficiency, control and maneuverability. The system
delivers higher productivity, reduced fuel consumption,
reduced operating costs and longer drivetrain component
life compared to other tractors in its size class.
The D7E is in the 60,000-pound (27,000-kilogram) weight
range and is powered by a Cat ® C9 engine producing 235
horsepower (175 kilowatts). Compared to the Caterpillar
D7R Series II, the D7E will deliver 25 percent more material
moved per gallon of fuel, 10 percent greater productivity
and 10 percent lower lifetime operating costs.
Caterpillar plans to commercially introduce the D7E in
select markets during 2009.
In the D7E powertrain, the diesel engine drives a generator
to produce electricity that ultimately powers two AC
electric drive motors, which are connected to a differential
steering system. A traditional mechanical transmission is
not needed, because the variable speed electric motors
serve the function of a continuously variable transmission.
The electric drivetrain has 60 percent fewer moving parts
compared to previous D7s. The electric system also
provides power to auxiliary components so that no engine
belts are needed.
In addition to the electric drive system, the D7E
incorporates many design improvements. Most noticeable
to an operator is the industry-exclusive center post cab.
The cab provides more all-around visibility and wider
sight lines to the blade for better operator productivity and
enhanced jobsite safety.
Other D7E features and benefits include:
• Electric drivetrain makes operator training easier,
because there are no gears to shift.
• A spacious tilt cab provides a comfortable environment
and allows ready access for maintenance. The electric
air conditioning system is a self contained module and
is mounted outside the cab. Noise levels in the cab
also are reduced by 50 percent.
• A single, larger blade lift cylinder replaces the
traditional dual cylinders. It provides the power
and stability of a dual-cylinder system but with less
than half the parts — for reduced maintenance. It
also aligns with the center post of the cab to enable
enhanced visibility.
• The C9 engine with ACERT® Technology meets U.S.
Tier 3 emissions standards, and the tractor has been
designed with Tier 4a in mind.
• The available SystemOne™ undercarriage reduces
undercarriage operating costs by 35 to 70 percent.
• Optional AccuGrade™ grade control system can cut
job costs significantly. Every D7E will come Grade
Control Ready, which allows installation of the
AccuGrade Attachment Ready Option at the factory
or at Toromont CAT.
Additional information about the D7E will be announced
in 2009 when the electric drive tractor nears commercial
availability.

Making a Difference
Once again, Toromont CAT’s team of
volunteers have been busy making a difference
in their territory by participating in charity
work and fundraising projects such as:
- Sponsoring the “Dragon Boat Race” for
United Way where Toromont had 5 teams
entered.
- Sponsorship of “Timmins Gets Clean” where
volunteers walk around the Township of
Timmins and pick up garbage.
United Way Dragon-Boat Race
One recent project, “United Way York Region
- Day of Caring,” took place on Thursday, May
15, 2008. Toromont CAT’s team dedicated
their time and effort on this special day to
Transitional and Supportive Housing Services
of York Region, located in Newmarket, Ontario.
The facility operates five programs providing
Toromont CAT’s team of volunteers
a variety of much needed services for people
from the York Region.
This year, our teams were multi-tasking –
painting, landscaping, building and cooking!
We were up to the challenge.
Most importantly, the painting accomplished
two things – giving the facility a needed boost
of colour, and also launching the re-naming of
TSHSYR to “The Blue Door Shelter”. Local
media was on hand to watch a sea of yellow
CAT® shirts accomplish a mountain of work.
Our talented team of volunteers also cleaned
up and fixed up a children’s play area, creating
a sandbox and oasis of fun in the process!
And finally, our last group of volunteers
spent the day preparing and cooking nutritious
meals for the residents, which were packaged
and frozen for a “rainy day”!

New Safety Initiative for Toromont CAT
Mobile communications are increasingly
becoming part of our daily lives. Approximately
20 million Canadians have cell phones – that
is about 62% of the population. In the US, this
rate is 84%. Research is beginning to show
that driver distraction as a result of cell phone
use is becoming a factor in accidents, which
cause property damage and personal injury. In
addition, several fatal accidents have recently
occurred where the driver was talking on their
cell phone. With so many distracted drivers
on our roads we need to take additional
action to protect our employees. It is with
this concern in mind that Toromont CAT has
made the decision to restrict cell phone use
while driving. The new policy, which will be
posted on the Intranet shortly, will state that
use of mobile communication devices (cellular
phones, Blackberry devices, Windows
Mobile devices) while driving is prohibited.
Employees are expected to take or make calls
from a vehicle only once they have pulled off of
the road safely and come to a stop. Additional
information is available in the policy. The policy
will be effective October 15, 2008.priority.
Remember, safety is our #1 priority.
KENYA from page 1
McClelland further stated, “I was proud to be
a part of this wonderful experience initiated by
Mr. Flynn. Thanks to the help of Chris Fraser, we
were able to make arrangements for shipping
the D6K right to the orphanage’s doorstep. The
OETIO received the unit in August along with a
representative who aided in training the operator
on this wonderful piece of equipment.”
“Toromont CAT was also proud to be a part
of this remarkable project and we extend
our congratulations to the Mully Children’s
Foundation on the addition of a much-needed
piece of equipment. I’m sure they will take very
good care of it,” said McClelland.
Dignitaries present were the Labour
Minister Brad Duguild, Public Infrastructure
Renewal Minister David Caplan and Ottawa
Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi. Also in attendance
were various Union representatives from
around the Province.

Battlefield Equipment Rental Fence
Battlefield Equipment Rentals has teamed
up with Modu-Loc Fence Rentals to supply
rental fence to construction sites throughout
Ontario and has access to an inventory of
over 1,000,000 feet of rental fence. The rental
fence is not a chain link system, but a much
more stable and secure welded metal panel
using an interlocking system. The panels
are finished in forest green coloured powder
coating, which is more visually appealing
than the standard metal fence. This is of
importance to many contractors, especially
when the look of the site is of concern.
The fence panels are extremely sturdy and
stable and can be installed as a free-standing
system, anchored in loose terrain or secured
onto concrete or blacktop. Gates for vehicles or
personnel can easily be installed in any location
in the fence line. For added privacy and security
a screening material can also be installed.
Part of the service provided to the
customers is the ability to modify or customize
the fence panels and bases to handle unique
situations and construction sites. Specialty
parts can also be designed and manufactured
for any special needs that may arise. The staff
has the experience and product knowledge to
consult with and be of assistance to project
managers to make their job easier in planning
the design of the fence layout to best serve
their needs. As site safety is always a major
priority, the bases are bright orange to make
them highly visible.
The Rental Fence
Each fence panel is 10 feet in length and is
available in heights of 4, 6 and 8-feet. The panel
frame utilizes structural steel square tubing.
Five foot Man Gates are available upon request.
The mesh of the panel is a welded wire with
a 2” (horizontal) by a 4” (vertical) pattern,
making it difficult to climb.
The fence panels fit onto a flat base which
provides excellent stability while allowing for
ease of installation by the field crews. The
bases may be anchored onto the ground,
concrete or asphalt for extra stability.
The panels are joined together at the top
by an interlocking steel cap ensuring the
alignment and overall strength of the fence.
Propane Storage Enclosures
Propane storage enclosures are available in
many sizes and configurations starting at 10’ x
10’. Separation for full and empty cylinders,
gates and signage will help keep your site
clean and compliant. Our set price includes
set-up, take down and delivery.
Has Your Staff
Preparing for the Winter Season
Received Their R.O.T.
Certification?
As the autumn months quickly approach and
we are threatened with the final curtain call of
Daylight Savings it is the time to start thinking
about those weekend projects you want to
finish before heading into winter. Battlefield
Equipment Rentals has the equipment and right
advice to help you clean out gutters, spruce up
outdoor furniture, even weather proofing your
home for the upcoming winter months.
Clean out Gutters
By unblocking nesting leaves in gutters
and drains around your home you reduce the
possibility of wet winter runoff causing water
damage to the structure of your home and a
major clean up job if it gets out of hand!
Start by trimming back any trees overhanging
your home, this not only avoids falling leaves
and branches but also allows the limited light
and warmth through – important to capture if
you want to reduce heating bills.
Remove any accumulated debris in
guttering and drains, once the majority of
blockages are removed use a hose to run
water through the guttering to ensure that
any runoff can flow freely.
A good preventative measure is to install
mesh netting across the top of the gutters,
stops leaves and small branches getting
caught, but allows water to flow freely.
Rental equipment for the job:
• Ladder and/or Scaffolding to reach those
high areas
• Wood Chipper for removed branches
• General garden equipment
• Hedge Trimmer and/or Pole Pruner
Ontario Regulations require that all
individuals installing, activating, or operating
a gas-fired construction heater complete
a ‘Record of Training’ (ROT) certification.
Separate certification is needed for Propane
and Natural Gas. This certificate must be
on hand when the work is performed and
presented when the rental companies leave
construction heaters at the site.
This R.O.T. course for builders, employees
and contractors is available through
scheduled classes or on-site training sessions
through rental providers such as Battlefield
Equipment Rentals.
Please note that R.O.T. certification is only
valid for a 3-year period. After 3 years, you
must be re-certified. Only residential gas
meters having between 1 and 1-1/2 inch motor
outlet and a single pressure regulator are
permitted to be turned on by a R.O.T. trained
individual or non-utility gas technician.

Clean up out door furniture for storage
Be organised this season and clean up your
outdoor furniture before storing it away for
the winter. This will be advantageous when it
comes to pulling it out at the other end, when
summer is once again upon us.
While most outdoor furniture is quite robust
– some require different methods of care
(suggest consulting manufacture if unsure).
Most wooden furniture comes up great with
a quick spray from a pressure washer; this
removes lichen, and any paint that may have
peeled during the summer. If your furniture is
not painted, it is an idea to rub down with wood
furniture oil before storage.
For lighter aluminium, glass or fabric furniture,
try a mixture 2 parts water one part detergent,
spray on and wipe clean with a damp cloth. For
aluminium furniture it is a good idea to apply a
rust neutralizer before storing away.
Rental equipment for the job:
• Gas Powered Pressure Washer
Winter Proofing your home
In an era of soaring fuel costs, heating your
home can become quite expensive. Some of
this cost can be minimized by taking simple
steps to winter proof your home. By reducing
drafts and cleaning out your fireplace you are
well on the way to creating a more healthy and
comfortable home this winter.
A simple measure in the war against the chill
is to seal up gaps and cracks around windows
and doors. By reducing drafts you are lessening
the output required by your heating system and
makes for a nice cozy room.
Cleaning out fireplaces and getting the
chimney swept assists efficiency in your wood
or coal burner. Also a good safety measure, as
leaving old debris can be a fire risk
Energy efficiency is always top of mind
when winter rolls around, and most fight
off the winter blues with a nice hot bath or
shower. To keep your water consistently nice
and hot, it is a good idea to consider insulating
your hot water heater – reduces power costs
and squabbles over the last of the hot water!
Rental equipment for the job:
• Dehumidifiers for drying out excessive
condensation

Achieve Maximum Performance When The Mercury Drops
When the temperature drops and cold
winds begin to blow, it’s time to think about
maintaining peak engine performance.
Although Caterpillar ® rental equipment can
operate under tough conditions, you can take
some steps at your jobsite to help ensure
equipment is ready to go when you are – no
matter what the temperature.
• Keep batteries fully charged and warm.
• Store equipment inside heated sheds,
barns or garages when possible. When
that isn’t possible, park the equipment in
a structure or area where it is protected
from the wind. A temperature just a few
degrees warmer helps make starting
easier.
• Keep fuel tanks as full as possible to
prevent condensation on exposed tank
walls. Water from condensation can
freeze and plug fuel lines between the
fuel tank and engine. In extremely cold
weather, fill the tank when shutting the
engine off for eight or more hours.
• Diesel engines require different grades
of fuel during extremely cold weather. In
temperatures below 20 degrees (F), use
diesel fuel No. 1 (DF1) or diesel fuel No. 2
(DF2). Both fuels should have a minimum
cetane rating of 45.
• A winter additive specially formulated
for diesel fuel reduces the possibility of
gelling and improves starting. Be sure to
follow the instructions on the container.
• When working in snow, check air cleaners
and air inlets periodically to maintain
proper airflow to the engine compartment.
• Accessories such as radios, heaters
and other high-amperage devices put an
extra strain on batteries during starting.
Turn off all these devices while starting
the machine.
• After starting an engine on a cold day,
allow it to warm up for a few minutes
before putting the machine under load.
Proper engine operating temperatures
ensure more efficient fuel combustion and
help prevent damage to cold engine parts.
Battlefield Equipment operates Cat Rental
Stores, and is the Caterpillar dealer for
Compact Equipment in Ontario, Manitoba and
Newfoundland. For more information on the
products, services and Training Programs that
Battlefield Equipment provides, call 1-800-RENTCAT to reach your nearest location.
Cold Weather Precautions
Cold weather requires unique precautions
to keep machines and people working safely.
Precautions for Machines
• Before cold weather arrives, install the
correct engine, hydraulic, transmission,
and final drive lubricants. Consult
the
Operation
and
Maintenance
Manual (OMM) for the manufacturer’s
requirements.
• Mix an antifreeze solution for the cooling
system. The solution should provide
freezing protection for the lowest
expected outside temperature.
• Be sure that the voltage of the electric
heaters matches the power source.
• Check the hoses, tires, fan belts, electrical
wiring and connections for fraying or
insulation damage during the daily walkaround inspections.
• Correct track tension is important during
cold weather operation in snow. Refer
to the OMM for the manufacturer’s
recommendations. Similarly, remember
that tire pressure in a warm shop area will
change significantly when the machine
goes outside into colder temperatures.
Consult the OMM for cold-weather
inflation pressures to prolong the life of
the machine’s tires.
• Check the air cleaners and air intake
daily, more often if snow is present.
• Fill the fuel tank at the end of each shift.
• Batteries should be warm and fully
charged and all starting fluid at room
temperature (inject only while the engine
is cranking). Once the engine is started,
run the engine until it reaches operating
temperature to help prevent the intake
and exhaust valves from sticking.
Protecting People
• Dress properly for cold weather by
wearing several lighter garments that
trap body heat instead of a single heavy
one. The first layer next to the skin should
draw moisture away from the body. Wool
or synthetics like polypropylene work
well, but avoid cotton as a first layer
because it absorbs and retains moisture.
• Insulating garments comprise the next
layer and there may be several, depending
on activity level and temperature. Wool
and synthetic “fleece” are appropriate
insulators, as they will hold the warmed
air.
• The outermost layer of clothing should
block the wind and repel moisture.
Choose tightly woven materials that repel
water and allow moisture to escape.
• Apply these layering ideas to your feet as
well. Boots stuffed with too many layers
of socks will restrict air circulation,
making the feet colder.
• Wear a warm hat and neck covering
since the majority of body heat is lost
through the head and neck.
• Always make sure that clothing is not
loose or hanging off the body in ways that
could catch on controls or machinery.
• Avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and
medications that may impair judgement
or inhibit the body’s response to cold.
• Thirst is suppressed when it’s cold
so drink plenty of warm beverages to
prevent dehydration.
• Workers wearing heavy protective gear
in cold environments expend more heat
and need 10 to 15 percent more calories.
• Take breaks to warm up, especially as
temperatures drop or wind picks up.

THE ROAD AHEAD
Caterpillar announces a new global strategy.
Strategic focus on global truck opportunities, including North
American heavy-duty vocational construction trucks, as well as
technology development for engines worldwide.
Caterpillar and Navistar have signed
a non-binding Memorandum of
Understanding to pursue these five
business opportunities together.
1. Develop a line of Cat heavy-duty vocational
construction trucks for the North American
market, with an initial product offering designed
to complement Cat construction equipment
targeted for 2010
2. Design and manufacture a line of medium and
heavy-duty commercial trucks for markets
outside of North America, leveraging the two
companies’ existing distribution capabilities
3. Cooperate on engine development,
incorporating best-in-class technology from
both companies and supporting their shared
stated path not to utilize urea-based Selective
Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology
4. Develop mid-range engines for light-duty diesel
applications such as school buses and utility
vehicles
5. Expand an existing remanufacturing relationship
to include Navistar’s MaxxForce on-highway
engines and additional REMAN opportunities
What are we going
to do to be successful?
Simply put, we are going to change the way we do
business. The proposed strategic alliance with Navistar
is a good example of our new direction. Collaboration
between the two companies will be a key factor in
helping us to become a leading global truck supplier.
And some things never change. This move is actually a
natural extension of our more than 40 years of serving
on-highway customers with proven, award-winning
technology—combined with unsurpassed global
distribution and product support.
Why such an alliance holds the
promise of success.
Caterpillar’s 2010
Engine Strategy
Caterpillar and Navistar bring complementary strengths to the
alliance. The combination of Navistar’s expertise in truck design,
development and manufacturing and Caterpillar’s unparalleled
worldwide distribution capabilities will create significant
advantages for customers worldwide. The alliance also supports
the fundamental strategies of both companies. It is a perfect
example of Navistar’s strategy of growing by leveraging its own
assets with those of others, and of Caterpillar’s commitment to
extend its core business and be a total solutions provider. The
companies have commissioned teams to focus on the truck and
engine plans. The contemplated transactions are subject to
completion of due diligence, execution of definitive agreements
and regulatory approvals.
• Concurrent with this new strategic direction, Caterpillar has
determined independently that it will not supply EPA 2010
compliant engines to truck and other on-highway original
equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
• Caterpillar and our dealers will continue to provide industry
leading product support and service well beyond 2010 for
all customers who operate Caterpillar on-highway engines
regardless of truck brand.
• Caterpillar plans to work together with Navistar to develop and
offer best-in-class diesel engine technology for medium and
heavy-duty truck engine markets worldwide .
• Caterpillar will continue to concentrate on substantial and
growing opportunities to supply engines in the petroleum, marine,
electric power generation and industrial markets—as well as to
produce engines for our own construction and mining equipment.
Our engine opportunities
To succeed, we must expand from North America into the
global market. In 2007 the North American on-highway market
represented only 22% of the global truck market. More than 1.7
million trucks were sold outside of the US. There is also good
news. Despite a weak North American on-highway market, our
global engine business has shown unparalleled growth in total
engine sales. Therefore, the time has come to invest in new
global growth—and in doing so, to align the long-term strategic
direction for Global On-Highway with Vision 2020.
How do we plan to get there?
The Memorandum of Understanding details our long-range plan
to become a global leader in the on-highway truck and engine
markets. The more immediate plan is to increase sales and product
Near Term
• Selling, manufacturing and supporting Cat
heavy-duty and medium-duty engines to
our global customers through 2009.
• Continued product support focus to grow
on-highway parts and service sales to
the more than 1.6 million on-highway

support opportunities that exist today under our current business
model. Our strategic plan includes:
Long Term
• Through this alliance, Caterpillar plans
to target a 2010 introduction of North
American Cat heavy-duty vocational
trucks for severe service applications,
such as road construction, large
infrastructure projects and oil and
petroleum development.
• Caterpillar intends to work with Navistar
to develop, manufacture and distribute
commercial trucks in select regions
outside of North America. The product
offering would include a full line of
medium and heavy-duty trucks in both
conventional and cab-over designs.
