Why should you automate? What would automation mean for your company, for your staff and for the products you make? What role does the association play in this? Which companies are members of VDMA Robotics + Automation? What does an association really do? What benefit does a membership of VDMA Robotics+ Automation provide? Who are the people behind it all? Find the answers on the following pages. Search Are you planning to automate and are still seeking the suitable machine builder, integrator or component supplier? Our sourcing service VDMA-products.com will easily help you find what you are looking for: www.vdma-products.com Cover: Innovative types of robots, such as the delta type shown here, allow for extremly high speed. Source: Erhardt + Abt Automatisierungstechnik GmbH 3 4 THE BENEFITS OF AUTOMATION Source: Krones AG Automate and stay on top Product quality is imperative How can companies benefit from automation? Modern production is automated. This is the only way for manufacturing companies to remain competitive, to prevent an exodus of key technologies, to generate qualified jobs, and to capture new markets. Low unit costs and high productivity are not reached in costly manual production set-ups, but in highly efficient, fully or partly automated plants. They often operate in three shifts – around the clock, twenty-four-seven. Furthermore, in case of a product change, wellengineered and efficient automation solutions can be quickly re-programmed and easily re-used. How does automation impact product quality? Whether individual solutions or standard products, automation guarantees consistently high quality with 100 % accuracy, infallible quality checks and permanent traceability. Without a high level of automation, a wide range of complex products we use in our daily life would not be possible – or would be simply unaffordable. Can you imagine buying a completely hand-made smart phone? Probably not. THE BENEFITS OF AUTOMATION Better working conditions Arriving in the society of the future How can employees benefit from automation? The social reformers criticized the monotony of work, its dangers, the heavy labor, and the severe consequences it often had for the workers’ health. Nowadays, a perfect human-machine interaction results in a more advanced and safe workplace. Monotonous, physically demanding tasks are accomplished by highly specialized machinery with robots that know neither arthritis nor muscle pain. Thus, the image of the exploited worker remains where it belongs: in bygone centuries. How can people benefit from automation? The world’s population is growing rapidly – therefore, it is necessary to use resources efficiently. An intelligently automated production can make a decisive contribution to minimizing our consumption of energy and natural resources. This is one of the major goals of the suppliers of robotics and automation. At the same time, people will actually buy eco-friendly products because automated production makes them affordable. 5 ROBOTICS + AUTOMATION We are your VDMA Robotics + Automation Association Integrated Assembly Solutions – much more than the sum of its parts The Robotics + Automation Association is best suited to serve your interests and take care of your needs. We are passionate about the three innovative fields in which our approximately 250 member companies are active: Out of millions of components, Integrated Assembly Solutions (IAS) creates new products every day. Combining, assembling, handling, joining, forming, measuring, testing, dosing, and labelling – this sector’s enterprises design and build the hardware and components needed for these tasks. • Robotics • Integrated Assembly Solutions (IAS) • Machine Vision For each of these key technologies, the VDMA has created a specialized group – and consolidated them in the Robotics + Automation Association in order to generate useful synergies. Robotics – innovative driving force for industry and society Do you remember your first toy robot? It was quite shaky and could barely make a noise, and yet it epitomized a better future. It was so fascinating. A lot has happened since then and our notion of a robot has dramatically changed. Today’s robotics industry features a high degree of innovation, a strong market growth and rapid technological developments. The intelligence of both people and machines is indispensable in this context – in order to come to smart, thought-through and therefore outstanding solutions. Machine Vision – when machines see and comprehend Cameras generate images that are automatically analyzed by software. Machine vision systems perform quality tests, guide machines, control processes, identify components, read codes and deliver valuable data for optimizing production. Machine Vision is constantly capturing new fields of application – also beyond the arena of manufacturing – always striving for higher quality, efficiency and product safety. Industrial robots have become an indispensable tool in manufacturing. As a core element of automation, they take center stage in strategic business decision-making. One thing, however, has remained the same: robots are still incredibly fascinating. This is the world of Robotics and Automation.
