4 THE BENEFITS OF AUTOMATION
Source: Krones AG
Automate and stay on top
Product quality is imperative
How can companies benefit
from automation?
Modern production is automated. This is the
only way for manufacturing companies to
remain competitive, to prevent an exodus of key
technologies, to generate qualified jobs, and to
capture new markets. Low unit costs and high
productivity are not reached in costly manual
production set-ups, but in highly efficient, fully
or partly automated plants. They often operate in
three shifts – around the clock, twenty-four-seven.
Furthermore, in case of a product change, wellengineered and efficient automation solutions
can be quickly re-programmed and easily re-used.
How does automation impact
product quality?
Whether individual solutions or standard products, automation guarantees consistently high
quality with 100 % accuracy, infallible quality
checks and permanent traceability. Without a
high level of automation, a wide range of complex products we use in our daily life would not
be possible – or would be simply unaffordable.
Can you imagine buying a completely hand-made
smart phone? Probably not.
THE BENEFITS OF AUTOMATION Better working conditions
Arriving in the society of the future
How can employees benefit
from automation?
The social reformers criticized the monotony
of work, its dangers, the heavy labor, and the
severe consequences it often had for the workers’ health. Nowadays, a perfect human-machine
interaction results in a more advanced and safe
workplace. Monotonous, physically demanding tasks are accomplished by highly specialized
machinery with robots that know neither arthritis
nor muscle pain. Thus, the image of the exploited
worker remains where it belongs: in bygone
centuries.
How can people benefit
from automation?
The world’s population is growing rapidly – therefore, it is necessary to use resources efficiently. An
intelligently automated production can make a
decisive contribution to minimizing our consumption of energy and natural resources. This is one
of the major goals of the suppliers of robotics
and automation. At the same time, people will
actually buy eco-friendly products because automated production makes them affordable.

ROBOTICS + AUTOMATION
We are your VDMA Robotics + Automation Association
Integrated Assembly Solutions –
much more than the sum of its parts
The Robotics + Automation Association is best
suited to serve your interests and take care of
your needs. We are passionate about the three
innovative fields in which our approximately 250
member companies are active:
Out of millions of components, Integrated
Assembly Solutions (IAS) creates new products
every day. Combining, assembling, handling,
joining, forming, measuring, testing, dosing, and
labelling – this sector’s enterprises design and
build the hardware and components needed for
these tasks.
• Robotics
• Integrated Assembly Solutions (IAS)
• Machine Vision
For each of these key technologies, the VDMA has
created a specialized group – and consolidated
them in the Robotics + Automation Association in
order to generate useful synergies.
Robotics –
innovative driving force for
industry and society
Do you remember your first toy robot? It was quite
shaky and could barely make a noise, and yet it
epitomized a better future. It was so fascinating.
A lot has happened since then and our notion of a
robot has dramatically changed. Today’s robotics
industry features a high degree of innovation, a
strong market growth and rapid technological
developments.
The intelligence of both people and machines is
indispensable in this context – in order to come
to smart, thought-through and therefore outstanding solutions.
Machine Vision –
when machines see and comprehend
Cameras generate images that are automatically
analyzed by software. Machine vision systems
perform quality tests, guide machines, control
processes, identify components, read codes and
deliver valuable data for optimizing production.
Machine Vision is constantly capturing new fields
of application – also beyond the arena of manufacturing – always striving for higher quality,
efficiency and product safety.
Industrial robots have become an indispensable tool in manufacturing. As a core element of
automation, they take center stage in strategic
business decision-making. One thing, however,
has remained the same: robots are still incredibly
fascinating.
This is the world of
Robotics and Automation.

8 OUR SERVICES
Service for our members
Stay on top in daily business
Ready for the future
With a membership of the Robotics + Automation Association, you are all set for your daily
business. We provide you with statistical data
as a basis for your strategic decisions, help you
become more productive through technical
standardization, create networks and synergies,
sharpen the profile of trade fairs, and raise the
visibility of our industry among customers and
the wider public.
No future without new blood: we believe that
qualified, motivated and creative employees are
more precious than rare earths. This is why we
do everything to get young talents enthusiastic
about the opportunities enterprises have to offer
in the field of robotics and automation – via new
media, in schools and on trade fairs, with exciting
videos, students’ days, and the VDMA Talentmaschine – our new online portal for students and
aspiring young professionals.
Our market analyses and indexes reliably display
current industry trends. Thanks to the participation of our members, our statistical surveys result
in exceptional data quality – a sound basis for
your strategic decisions.
Standardization brings enormous advantages
in the market place. Uniformly applying rules
allow for sales increases and safety – worldwide.
We make sure that standards development is
industry-driven.
Joining forces – we bring stakeholders together:
sector group meetings, members’ assemblies
and interdisciplinary industry meetings fuel your
business success. As the conceptual sponsor of
AUTOMATICA in Munich and VISION in Stuttgart,
we shape the world´s two leading trade fairs for
our sector. As the industry’s voice, we make use
of all communication channels – from the trade
press to social media, from articles to videos and
films.
http://rua.vdma.org/team
What technological and social trends are on the
horizon? What new fields of application offer
potentials for growth? How are customer needs
changing? Our future studies will provide you
with the answers to these questions.
Some technologies are gaining importance in
several fields – e.g. in automotive engineering,
in the building industry, in aviation, and in wind
power plant construction. An excellent example
is composites. In our interdisciplinary forums,
such as the Composite Technology Forum, our
members come together and make high volume
production of new products a reality.
We also cultivate our contacts to the scientific community. By doing so, we can identify
research topics that are essential – always from
the industry’s point of view – or connect science
and industry in targeted matchmaking events.
OUR SERVICES The world is your oyster
We are active wherever great opportunities for
the automation sector arise: VDMA Robotics +

with the head office, and the local market situation. Furthermore, we evaluate trade fairs abroad,
organize joint booths and get you in touch with
local contact persons.
The Team of VDMA Robotics + Automation
In concise newsletters or detailed country and
industry reports, we keep our members up to
date about market potentials. Our representative
offices in the BRIC countries and in Japan offer
on-site advice and individual services to help you
overcome cultural, linguistic or legal barriers or to
recruit staff for a smoother access to the market.
Our foreign trade and legal experts in our Frankfurt-based headquarters offer concrete support
for members when entering new markets worldwide (customs, directives, standards, contracts,
etc.). After all, our member companies already
make more than 50% of their turnover abroad.

Member Opinions
“To actively develop markets with long-term success
needs solid foundations. A strong VDMA creates platforms (AUTOMATICA), launches initiatives (Blue Competence) and establishes guidelines (standardization). We,
the companies, then supply the required technology.
Simply put: The association is to the robotics industry what robotic technology is to the manufacturing
industry”.
Olaf Kramm
Managing Director, FANUC Deutschland GmbH
“Through the VDMA membership, a medium sized
enterprise like ours gains access to all kinds of support
(such as legal advice or export formalities) that otherwise only big companies could afford.”
Dr. Karl-Heinz Lachmann
Managing Director, SIM Automation GmbH
“For us as a manufacturer of automation products and
solutions, VDMA Robotics + Automation is the ideal
platform for discussing current and future challenges
and finding solutions to tackle them – a win-win situation for all parties involved.“
Hans-Ulrich Witschel
Director Sales Germany, Festo AG & Co. KG
“In rapidly growing markets, our members need upto-date market data for their corporate management.
Therefore, the VDMA provides monthly trend indicators for many customer industries. So the member
companies can keep track of the development of these
customer industries and can benchmark their own performance relative to the industry average.”
