A message from the principal,
Bob Rowe
As spring approaches, I want to express my gratitude to you the alumni of Covington
Catholic and to others who believe in “With a Spirit That Will Not Die” and help us
accomplish our mission of educating young men. It is an awesome feeling knowing
that our students are being provided with a Catholic education and that their faith will
continue to grow.
Since this is my first year as principal, I am experiencing some different facets of Catholic education. This is
the time of year that we finalize our school budget for the next school year. Like many other institutions, we are
preparing for some of the economic challenges that are awaiting us, while also trying to keep Catholic education
affordable. The Diocese of Covington has taken the lead in this process by taking several bold steps. For the 200910 school year, the Diocese has placed a freeze on tuition, as well as on teacher and staff salaries. The Diocese
has also discontinued the out-of-district fee for diocesan families that do not belong to our feeder parishes. In
addition to these diocesan steps, we offer many types of discounts including; a multi-student discount, a multistudent discount between CCH and NDA students and an early payment discount option. The most noteworthy
assistance is our financial aid package. This past school year, over $192,000 in financial aid was awarded to our
families. These grants come in the form of work study monies and scholarship opportunities. All of these steps
fit with our desire to keep all of our young men here at CCH while also continuing to be fiscally responsible.
Catholic education is such a big part of all our lives whether we are alumni, teachers, current students, or
parents. Personally, Catholic schools have my deepest gratitude for helping me become the person that I am
today. I understand that families have many educational options. However, in addition to all of the academic
opportunities that are available at CCH, our students are taught ethics, service to others, and adherence to morals
and values that are essential in life. It is for these reasons that I want CCH to continue to be a very attractive
school for our current and future students who wish to succeed spiritually, academically, physically, and socially.
Therefore, during our annual appeal, I ask that you consider making a pledge so that we can continue our
commitment to Catholic education.
Please remember the difference that Catholic schools made for us. Now it is our turn to make a difference for
our current and future students at Covington Catholic High School.
God’s Blessings,
Bob Rowe

Welcome Back!
Dave Wirth, former Covington Catholic High School
teacher and football assistant coach, has been named the
new head football coach at Covington Catholic High School.
Most recently, Dave was the head coach at Hamilton Badin
High School, where he led the Rams to two GCL titles over
the past three seasons, returning the Rams to the OHSAA
playoffs for the first time since 2001.
Former CCH Head Football Coach Lynn Ray had this
to say about the new head football coach, “Dave was a great addition to our staff.
He proved to be a bright, dedicated, energetic assistant. I knew that it was only a
matter of time before he would become a successful head coach.”
“Dave is an outstanding educator in the classroom as well as on the field. More
importantly, Dave incorporates his faith into his teaching and coaching. Dave possesses the necessary passion for teaching and coaching that will bring enthusiasm
to the Covington Catholic Community. We wish Coach Wirth the best of luck and
much success in his new endeavor as our head football coach,” said Principal Bob
Rowe.
“Dave is a very innovative and energetic coach. His personal coaching experience has prepared him well for this position. He understands Covington Catholic
and through his leadership he will continue the rich tradition of Covington
Catholic football,” commented Athletic Director Mike Guidugli. As of mid March
the following individuals had been named to his coaching staff:
Dave Wirth Jr. – Head Coach, QB’s, Special Teams
Matt Roberts – Offensive Coordinator, WR’s
Todd Naumann – Defensive Coordinator, DB’s
Lynn Ray – Linebackers
Dave Wirth Sr. – Offensive Line
Terry Regan – Defensive Line
Kevin Buckley – Defensive Line, Linebackers, JV Defense
John Hennessey – Running Backs, JV Offense
Nick Hovan – Head Freshman Coach
Andy Zerhusen – Asst. Freshman Coach
Alex Fangman – Asst. Freshman Coach
Ray Michaels – Asst. Freshman Coach
**others to be named later
Dave earned a liberal arts degree with a minor in Religion from Xavier
University. He returned to his alma mater, Archbishop Moeller H.S. where he
coached under Steve Klonne from 1995 through 2000. From 2001 through 2003
he was part of Coach Lynn Ray’s staff at Covington Catholic where he served as
Varsity Defensive Coordinator, while also teaching Religion. In 2004, he became
the head football coach at Hamilton Badin High School.
Covington Catholic High School was established in 1925. Our mission is to educate
young men spiritually, academically, physically, and socially. Covington Catholic

Covington Catholic High School Announces
New Hall of Fame Inductees
The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for Covington Catholic was held on
Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at The Gardens in Park Hills KY. This year’s inductees were:
Jack Abeln
(1970) Jack has been involved at Covington Catholic since the early 90’s. Over the years, he has contributed in a number of ways. As a
long-time member of the Boosters, he has and continues to be a regular member of the Bingo Team. Since the Boosters took over the bingo
operation in 1994, it has been (by far) the biggest source of income for the Boosters and for Covington Catholic Athletics. In addition
to working Bingo every Thursday night, Jack works the concession stand for ALL football games (varsity, jv and frosh) and serves as a
timer for the basketball teams (all levels) and for the last three years he has served as president of the Covington Catholic Grade School
Basketball League.
Bryan Clemons
(1983) Bryan is the 13th highest basketball scorer in school history with 1,094 points. He received a scholarship to play basketball for
Bellarmine College in Louisville. He was also an excellent cross country runner, a sport in which he served as captain and was a member
of the first state championship team in 1982.
Mike Dacey
(1990) Mike was a three-year starter as a center midfield for the Cov Cath Soccer team. He was named all-Region all three years and was
named all-state his junior and senior years. He led the team with 20 goals his senior season even though he often drew double marking from
opponents. He was the salutatorian of the 1990 graduating class.
Barry Jones
(1991) Barry was a three-year varsity football letterman as a starting offensive and defensive tackle at CCH. He was Voted Kentucky
1st team All-State by the Associated Press and the Louisville Courier Journal as a senior and voted Kentucky 2nd team All-State by
the Louisville Courier Journal as a junior. In addition, Barry was selected to the Channel 5 All-Star team, the Coca-Cola Bottling All
9th Region team, the Kentucky-Tennessee All-Star team and he also participated in the NKY East/West All-Star Game. Barry was
named twice to the all-district and all-Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference. He was a team captain and the squad’s “Most Valuable
Offensive Lineman”. He helped lead CCH to a 36-5 record during his three prep seasons, including a 14-1 mark, and 3A State Title as
a sophomore. As a defensive tackle, he recorded 72 tackles, six quarterback sacks, and four fumble recoveries in 1990. He started both
ways as a junior and senior. He was also a three-year state qualifier and varsity letterman in track (shot put). His personal best in shot
put was a toss of 50 feet. Barry earned a football scholarship to the University of Kentucky.
Artie Steinmetz
(1997) Artie was a three-year varsity football starter who was voted the Best Defensive Lineman both his junior and senior years.
As a sophomore, he was a member of the ’94 State Championship team. As a junior he was selected to the 1st team all conference,
and 1st team Northern Kentucky Football Coaches Association. As a team captain in his senior year, Artie received numerous awards
including the prestigious Northern Kentucky Top 24 as well as 1st team All State by both the Associated Press and the Louisville Courier
Journal.
Close to 150 friends, past Hall of Fame honorees, alumni and family attended this most distinguished event. Jeff Piecoro, sports reporter
for FSN Ohio was the Master of Ceremonies. Each inductee spoke a few words about their experiences at CCH. The featured speaker
was Dave Lapham, radio personality and former Cincinnati Bengal, who gave guests some insight on Bengals players and the values he
was taught as a player in high school through his professional years.

A Class Challenge……
What A Great Idea!!!!!!!
One night last week some friends and I were sitting around, sipping on Caffeine
Free Diet Pepsi’s and watching basketball, when one of the guys, a CCH alum,
asked me how enrollment was coming along for the incoming Freshman Class of
2013. All seven of us around the table were CCH grads from the class of 1964. I told
him that it was still pretty early to tell whether or not the enrollment numbers would
maintain the same numbers as previous years. (Great numbers, by the way.)
With the economy struggling, it seems that there is a family coming through the
development office doors every day, looking for financial assistance. As you probably already know, the Bishop froze salaries and tuition in the Diocese a few weeks
ago in order to hold costs down.
We have a great thing going here at Covington Catholic. The spirit level is high
and I can honestly say I have not had a boy in my classroom in years who did not
absolutely love it here. And every boy who goes here gets a great education. I spoke
with a young grad just last week who is a freshman at the University of Notre Dame.
He made the Dean’s list his first semester there. But, reality is reality. There are
many families who are considering pulling their sons and sending them to public
schools, simply because they can’t afford it. Fathers are being laid off, mothers are
going back to work, and jobs are being eliminated.
It costs $6,340 a year for tuition at CCH. There is a work study program that
gives financial assistance if the student can stay after school and work off part of
what the family owes, and many families take advantage of that. Thanks to a few
generous donors, there is financial aid for some.
Well, one of my Pepsi drinking friends suggested that we, the class of 1964, pay
the tuition for just one student. The seven guys around the table each said “I’m in
for $100.” Just like that, we made a commitment for the future. Then they pushed
me to put the word out to every graduating class to accept the same challenge: to
raise enough money to pay the tuition for one incoming or current student whose
family is in financial need.
Please take this seriously and call a few friends. Maybe appoint a committee from
your class. If we can only save a few boys it would be worth doing. I can provide
phone numbers and some e-mail addresses for class members. Call me or e-mail me.

I would like
to introduce Mr.
Bill Snyder to our
Alumni. If you
do not know him
already, Bill has
been a member of
our faculty since
2001 and is now our new Alumni Relations Coordinator. Being an alumnus, Bill knows what it means to be a
COLONEL! He is very excited about
getting involved with the alumni and
has many new ideas. Bill will be in
charge of reunions and other alumni
activities like the alumni basketball
tournament and the Memorial Mass.
Bill came back to Covington Catholic to teach freshman religion after he
sold his part ownership in Freightliner
of Cincinnati in 2001. Since his return,
Bill has become a valuable asset to
our learning community, acting as our
school campus minister, serving on
retreat teams, overseeing the community service program and helping Al

Alumni Spotlight
Mitchell Sipus, ’00 with the assistance of a US Fulbright
research grant, currently lives in Cairo, Egypt. He is working
with Sudanese gangs to create opportunities and programs
to reduce violence. These gangs pursue acts of violence as a
means to assert power within their lives, similar to those of
gangs in urban neighborhoods in Europe and America. The
youth of these groups are marginalized within the socioeconomic, political, and legal systems of Cairo – subjecting
them to additional hardships beyond their personal histories
of violence and displacement. As refugees within Egypt,
they are not permitted access to employment, education,
or health care by the Egyptian government. Consequently,
these young men substitute the limitations of the law with
a new system of order.
Mitchell’s work with the gangs consists of providing
guidance with the use of hip hop music and imagery as a
means of empowerment. This creative process drives them
to find peace through personal reflection, idea construction
and vocal expression which in turn helps them to reallocate
the role of violence in their lives. Mitchell has found that
those gang members who participate in this activity maintain a consistent level of respect and credibility among their
peers in turn reducing the necessity to pursue aggressive
behaviors.
Mitchell relates the process of his work to the Tim
Haders method. “As my own art career was founded with
the art instruction of Tim Haders, it is apparent that in a
similar manner to his own teaching philosophy, this project
utilizes creative expression as a vehicle toward other objectives, such as a means to penetrate complex emotions and
to engage the journey of one’s life in a manner that provides
opportunities of illumination.”
Mitchell graduated from the Art Academy of Cincinnati
with a BFA in Drawing in 2004 and completed his M.S. in
Architecture and Masters of Community Planning at UC in
2008. Feel free to check out his blog at http://blog.myearthprint.com which he updates frequently.
Mitchell is truly living a life dedicated to others. Please
keep him and his work in your prayers.

Father Joe Thaler ’67, the
Regional Superior of Maryknoll
in Asia (Can you imagine!!)
recently sent us a note, along with
some photos, from the Maryknoll
Mission in Nepal.
He works primarily in the ministry of health care and specifically in the field of “development
of ethics in health research”.
His day to day missionary work
is centered on a 10 month training program that has proven to
be very successful for the physically challenged. This
takes place in a village setting where all of the trainees are
given new sewing machines at a cost of around $60-$70
per machine. Through the program they learn how to sew
and make patterns, as well as how to maintain and repair
the machines. Informal education classes are also available
where the participants learn a lot about the dignity of work.
“I am so impressed with these wonderful people. At the end
of the program they leave with the sewing machine and are
ready for meaningful employment anywhere! The success
rate is 100%” says Father Thaler.
We have many successful alumni, but few like Father
Thaler who does God’s work in places so distant from the
world in which we live. Our thoughts and prayers are with
Father Thaler.
We are looking for representatives from the

Middle School Football Program Established
In the spring of 2008, a committee was formed to establish the first middle
school football program for CCH, called Colonels Youth Football. The founding
committee included Randy Ellison ’79, Bob Morris ’76, A.J. Schreiver ’79, Mike
Guidugli (Athletic Director) and Coach Dave Brossart. Later, Tim Reese ’82 and
Dale Zdolshek joined the committee.
The committee hoped for 20 players to start the program in the fall of 2008,
but 66 seventh and eighth grade students from Blessed Sacrament, St. Agnes, St.
Joe and St. Pius X signed up. A student must attend a CCH feeder school/parish to participate in the program. Due to the large number of players, two evenly
matched teams were formed to play in the Northern Kentucky Middle School Football League. The teams practice together on the CCH turf field but play separate
schedules. The teams learn and run the varsity offensive and defensive plays.
The middle school football program is led by Head Coach Ted Edgington ’84
and assistant coaches - Don Bieger ’88, Chris Brunemann ’02, Ross Finan, Kevin
Lonneman ’01, Don Martin ’82, Bob Morris ’76, and Bob Pauly ’72.
The Colonels Youth Football organization’s Board members are Bob Morris
’76 - President, Dale Zdolshek - Vice President, Ted Edgington ’84 - Secretary
and A.J. Schreiver ’79 – Treasurer.

Hills on November 15th while fundraising close to $48,000! The proceeds from this dance will go to the Boosters,
Grotto and the school. Covington Catholic High School would like to thank chairpersons Ann Flood and Gina
Best for all of their hard work and Brad Slabaugh who chaired the event sponsor committee.
The gift gathering parties are a wonderful way for each class
to socialize, support the silent auction and meet new parents.
CCH would like to thank the hosts for the parties.

The success of this dance, like so many CCH events, is
directly related to the parents, alumni and past parents of the
school. The school is very grateful for their time and dedication
to their son’s education and their continuing committment to
Covington Catholic’s tradition of educating young men. We
look forward to the dinner dance next year. If you are interested
in being on the committee for next year, contact Gina Best at

Father Joe Gallenstein, CCH Chaplin, celebrated the Memorial Mass for our deceased Alumni on November 6, 2008.
Over 100 visitors came to the Mass to honor and remember their loved ones. Sixty six deceased alumni and “special

presented a rose during Mass. All of our deceased alumni were included in the program so they could be remembered in
our prayers. A brunch followed in the cafeteria hosted by our CCH Parent’s Club. To quote one of the attendees “Thank
you for another wonderful Memorial Mass for the deceased Alumni. As always it was a grand morning, sad but grand.”
Thanks to Linda Fussinger for chairing the lunch and all the mothers who assisted her. We would also like to thank
