Their art melds fashion, architecture, design with social activism, reflecting how Jorge and Lucy operate not only as artists, but as campaigners, community mediators and educators. l Jorge and Lucy address concerns which are both contemporary and topical — community and social inclusion, dwellings and mobility, recycling and sustainable development — but which also tap into primordial traditions and cultures, such as nomadism. l Internationally acclaimed, their work has been exhibited worldwide including at the Louvre Museum, Paris; Deitch Projects, New York; PS1, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Hayward Gallery, London; Secession, Vienna; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; Pitti Imagine, Florence; Design Academy, Eindhoven. l This book presents six of their latest projects co-produced with community groups in diverse locations from Australia to South Africa, from grand metropolis such as New York to deprived industrial towns such as Thiers (France). l Jorge + Lucy Orta Pattern Book: An Introduction to Collaborative Practices is also a practical tool the reader can use to set up their own workshops and education programmes, and includes detachable pattern sheets for the reader to use to create their own projects. l This beautifully illustrated book will captivate a diverse audience of artists, fashion designers, engineers, architects, community workers, and teachers. architecture art design fashion history photography theory and things DESCRIPTION Throughout Jorge and Lucy Orta's early career, the artists have engaged and worked with diverse groups of people. Fusing the respective spaces of architecture and fashion with art, technology, philosophy and interactivity, resulting in a series of actions and events that forge special connections between groups and individuals. This publication intends to explore this significant area of the artists' work. Looking at distinctive projects where the artists have actively involved people and created new opportunities for them. Jorge and Lucy Orta have worked simultaneously in many different situations and locations, acting as a catalyst for exchange, and exploring contemporary art as a collective action — "every spectator becomes a potential co-producer". Workshops in primary schools and higher education, working with the unemployed and homeless, creating opportunities for migrant labourers to develop new skills in Johannesburg are a few examples of their diverse undertakings. Through these multi-layer collaborations Jorge and Lucy Orta wish to address and challenge the practice of public art as a collective action, making the process a part of the communities’ lives and pushing the boundaries of public art, to be audience driven and, above all, relevant. The final sculptural outcome involves the audiences at large and accesses many individuals and communities involved. Essays and contributions by Peter Jenkinson, Paula Orrell, Janna Graham and Sally Tallant provide a full introduction to the process and methodology of each project. The book also includes a comprehensive Resource/Reference Section designed and compiled by B+B featuring relevant schools, gallery programmes, institutions, and courses. Peter Jenkinson is an arts consultant and is regarded as a pioneer of new arts practice. Alongside Creative Partnerships he initiated the development of The New Art Gallery Walsall. Paula Orrell is a curator at Plymouth Arts Centre developing a specific visual arts programme on socially engaged practice and human interaction. Janna Graham is a curator who has developed specialist research into socially engaged practice and mapping its pedagogical influences. She is currently curating Academy by Charles Esche and Irit Rogoff at the Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven. Sally Tallant is Head of Education at the Serpentine Gallery, whose projects include Dis-assembly, developed with Runa Islam, Faisal Abdu’Alla, Christian Bolkanski and Yona Friedman with North Westminster Community College London. B+B is a curatorial partnership between Sophie Hope and Sarah Carrington, which aims to develop critical frameworks for socially engaged practices through dialogue, exchange and open discussions. black dog publishing limited Unit 4.04 Tea Building 56 Shoreditch High Street London E1 6JJ www.bdpworld.com
