A Night of Antioxidantsth and Alvin Ailey

Late March and early April are apparently a big time for diet books. Because, in case
you haven't been paying attention, bikini season is just around the corner. You're
supposed to ignore the Peeps and jellybeans, try not to stuff yourself with too much
matzoh and cream cheese, and instead focus on shedding the weight you meant to lose
back in January.
This spring, you have a few options. You can try Eileen Daspin's "The Manhattan Diet,"
which applies the eating tenets of the sophisticated, New York woman, on the run in
Isabel Marant sneakers, to everyday life. (Ms. Daspin is having a book party next week,
at an apartment in the Dakota.)
You can try Kathy Freston's "The Lean: A Revolutionary (and Simple!) 30-Day Plan for
Healthy, Lasting Weight Loss," which teaches you to set clear, uncomplicated and
healthy intentions and then slowly "lean in" to them. (Ms. Freston is having a book party
next week at Arianna Huffington's in Chelsea.)
Or you can try Lucy Danziger's "The Drop 10: Add to Your Plate to Lose the Weight,"
which suggests readers add more metabolism friendly "superfoods" to their regimen,
including almonds, cherries, steak and eggs.
Beating her competitors to the punch, Ms. Danziger, the editor of SELF magazine, had
her book party on Wednesday in the High Line Room at the Standard. Let's just say
there were a lot of ladies there, many of whom were talking about antioxidants.
Ms. Danziger, for one, compared eating to driving. "You don't wait till you're out of gas
to fill up the car," she said. "It should be the same way with hunger. Don't fill up when
you're completely depleted. And choose the right fuel." Superfoods, she added, have a
lot of antioxidants.
There were several examples of hors d'oeuvres built from superfoods by the Standard's
catering staff. "I wouldn't say it's any easier or harder than cooking with other
ingredients," said Chef Mike Clayton of the steak tartare on a sweet potato chip, the
crab-stuffed mushrooms and, for dessert, the fried oatmeal crisp with peanut butter
mascarpone and chocolate chips. "We just had to key down and not use as much
butter."
Dylan Lauren, whose Dylan's Candy Bar provided chocolate bars with almonds for the
goody bags, is the Candy Correspondent for Self. "Lucy and I both love to work out, but
we also love candy and chocolate," she said. "There's antioxidants in dark chocolate,
and there's also antioxidants in some gummi candy. We have a whole list of them at the
store. We have a pomegranate flavored one. I just don't like pomegranate flavors."
"Peanuts have more protein than any other nuts," said Lee Zalben, the founder and
president of Peanut Butter & Co. "And peanuts have more antioxidants than broccoli."
"Well, there are different kinds of antioxidants," said Michelle Buffardi, an online editor
at the Cooking Channel. Their combined suggestion: Make a super-duper PB and J
sandwich with broccoli on it.
Over at the Standard East Village, the Young Patron's Circle of Alvin Ailey was being
launched; there were greasy grilled cheese sandwiches being served and there was lots
of talk of supporting the future of dance. Which got us thinking: Do dancers, with their
lean bodies, worry about diet books and antioxidants?
"I'm sure there are dancers that care about antioxidants," said Robert Battle, Alvin
Ailey's relatively new artistic director. (Unfortunately, the company's working dancers
were on tour in Detroit, otherwise we would have asked them.)
"I wouldn't say I don't care," Mr. Battle said. "But I just started the biggest job of my life. I
don't have time to think about antioxidants."
The Circle was spearheaded by Hannah Bronfman and Honor McGee, whose father,
Henry McGee, is a bigwig at HBO as well as the president of Alvin Ailey's Board of
Trustees. Ms. Bronfman, a multi-tasker with interests in the fashion and music worlds,
and Ms. McGee, who's about to return to Harvard to study government at the graduate
level, are family friends and danced together when they were younger.
Alvin Ailey, said Ms. McGee, "is one of the greatest cultural institutions of New York,
right up there with the Met. The board wanted to reach out to the next generation. How
do we get them to the Ailey building?"
"We're trying to get a mix of the creative and the financial," said Ms. Bronfman. "We'll
have great parties too."
Okay, so let's move on to the real question: Where do they get most of their
antioxidants?
"I like to drink tea," said Ms. McGee. "Lots of green tea."
"I'm into blueberries," responded Ms. Bronfman. "But green tea is where it's at."

Danziger in NYC while she was promoting her new book “The Drop Ten Diet” and she
told us why the singer is hotter than ever!
“Oh my God, a role model body… I love Beyonce. I mean, she’s done Hollywood, she’s
