GREENSBORO
GRIMSLEY
GENERATIONS
NEWSLETTER
bringing Alumni together
1st Campaign a Huge Success!
Fall 2004 saw the launching of our first annual Generations Campaign,
a new direction in fundraising for our organization representing a
renewed commitment from our board and membership. This new yearly
Generations Campaign enlists alumni volunteers to join board members,
teachers and students, in a coordinated effort to reach out on a personal
level to past generations of Greensboro Grimsley students. And our
alumni responded in a big way …
we raised over $51,000 in our very first year!
With volunteers recruited from as
many past classes as possible, we
have been able to contact alumni
with mailings, personal notes and
phone calls. After years of mailing
newsletters to over 16,000 alumni …
a sincere effort to inform, involve, and
recruit new alumni as members …
it had become clear that the limited
response could no longer justify the
costs. Starting with our core group
of past contributors, our new goal
is to have past generations of
Greensboro Grimsley students
reach out to each other to help
their alma mater, in order to assist
present and future generations
of students. Our yearly newsletters
will now go out only to those who
have contributed to our efforts, thus
making more funds available to
continue our most important work:
providing scholarships to deserving
students and faculty, enhancing
school programs and facilities, and
making critical financial assistance
available to the faculty and staff as
needed.
This first Generations Campaign
was necessarily more limited by the
relatively small number of volunteers
for the launch of the effort. Alumni
representatives were simply not
available for every class, and those
volunteers were not sufficient to allow
us to contact more than a portion
of those classes represented. Yet
with only 60 alumni volunteers, and
just a portion of the past classes
represented, we were able to contact
over 3,300 alumni and raise over
$51,000 for Grimsley!
Imagine what we could do if every
class was represented by teams of
alumni, individuals willing to touch
and inform old classmates, to involve
them in our efforts to make our school
better. You are our charter members,
our core contributors, and we are
immensely grateful for your help.
Now we need all of you to spread
the word, so that we can get more
volunteers, reach more alumni
classes, and make this annual
Generations Campaign an even
greater success. Great things have
been accomplished, and much more
can and will be done, because the
legacy and traditions of excellence
at Greensboro Grimsley High School
must continue. Together we can make
a difference and we thank you for
helping us make a huge difference in
our very first year!

Alumni Association President
Larry Saunders Teaching
Award for Math & Science
The Grimsley Alumni Association is pleased to announce that the
LARRY SAUNDERS SCHOLARSHIP FUND has now been renamed
and officially converted into the LARRY SAUNDERS TEACHING
AWARD FOR MATH & SCIENCE.
Larry Saunders taught math at
Greensboro Grimsley High School
for 28 years until his retirement in
1996. His legendary teaching career
touched thousands of students.
The Grimsley Class of 1982 initiated
this fund in 1996 to honor one of
the great teachers in the school’s
history. Though the fund was initially
designated for a student scholarship
award, the fund donors have now
decided to shift their focus to reward
an outstanding teacher in Math or
Science at Grimsley, as the best way
to continue to honor Larry Saunders’
legacy.
Each spring, nominations will be
accepted for the most outstanding
Math or Science teacher at Grimsley.
Nominations may be made by
both students and teachers. The
Alumni Association Scholarship
Committee will select a winner from
the nominees, and the winner will
receive a $500 award.
Grimsley Alumni Association
member Max Lloyd, Class of
1982, said, “Grimsley has a strong
tradition of teaching excellence. It
is a privilege to honor part of that
tradition by naming this award for
Larry Saunders. He never lost sight
of the fact that his students were
the ultimate customer. His work
ethic, humor, leadership by example
and insistence on success were
the building blocks of hundreds
of successful careers. In an
increasingly high-tech economy, the
importance of Math and Science
education will only continue to grow.
This award is intended to build on
Grimsley’s past success in this
critical area.”
Alumni and friends of Grimsley
who would like to contribute to the
Saunders Teaching Award Fund may
send checks to:

Whirlie
Walkin’ is
Great Fun!
On March 19th our 3rd Annual
Whirlie Walk was held at Jamieson
Stadium. This is an exciting, schoolwide fundraising event that benefits
Grimsley High School and is driven
by students, faculty and staff, all of
whom are encouraged to participate.
Our first three years have been a
tremendous success, raising over
$65,000 for the benefit of Grimsley
… every dollar raised is used for
the important work of the Alumni
Association!
Congratulations to all of the students
and teachers who have participated
in our first three Whirlie Walks (every
participating student and teacher
raised at least $25). Thanks too to all
of our fantastic alumni and friends
who have given so generously of
their time and money.
If you like to walk, run, listen to music
or just hang out, the Whirlie Walk is
definitely for you, and all students,
faculty, staff, alumni and friends are
always invited. Make plans now to be
part of our 4th Annual Whirlie Walk
scheduled for Spring, 2006… hope
to see you there!

New Scholarship Funds
Announced
Two new scholarship funds to be administered by the Grimsley High
School Alumni Association were established in 2004 …
The Melvin G. Coleman
Memorial Scholarship Fund
This Scholarship will be given in loving memory of Melvin G. “Dean” Coleman,
whose daughter Margaret Coleman Szott graduated from Grimsley High
School, went on to matriculate at Duke University and then the UNC-CH
School of Dentistry, and is now a practicing dentist in Greensboro. The
endowment for this Scholarship has been established with a generous initial
gift from Margaret Szott and her husband, Tom. The Scholarship will provide
for an annual award of $500 to be applied toward the purchase of textbooks
at the recipient’s college of choice. The Scholarship will be awarded to a
graduating senior who exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete, with the
following eligibility criteria serving as guidelines for selection:
A. An excellent academic record, with an unweighted GPA of 3.0 or
higher in a challenging curriculum that preferably includes Honors, AP
and/or IB courses.
B. Participation in one or more of the Varsity Cross Country, Varsity
Swimming or Varsity Track Teams, with preference being given to a
multi-sport athlete.
C. Demonstrated dedication and team spirit displayed while participating
in a sport.
D. Preference should be given to candidates who demonstrate financial
need.
The Lester Earl Gross III
Scholarship Fund
This Scholarship will be given in
loving memory of Lester Earl Gross
III, a 1976 graduate of GHS who was
tragically killed by a drunken driver
while on business in Canada several
years ago. Family and friends of
Lester Gross last year completed the
endowment of a soccer scholarship
at UNC-G in memory of Lester.
Rather than let their memorial to
Lester end there however, family,
friends and former GHS classmates
of Lester have established this
Scholarship at GHS to be awarded
to one or more graduating seniors
following eligibility criteria that
are still under discussion. This
Scholarship will be funded annually
employing funds raised at a “turkey
fry” in celebration of Lester’s life and
contributions to the community, as
well as other contributions received
from friends and former classmates.
Almost $1,900 has been raised and
contributed to this new Scholarship
Fund.

Greensboro
Grimsley Senior
High School
Nominated for
National Register!
The final draft National Register
nomination for Greensboro Grimsley
High School was approved by the
State Historic Preservation Office
in Raleigh. Working closely with our
Alumni Association Board, Laura
Phillips developed and revised the
nomination for submission on behalf
of our Board and the school … great
job!
The state has now placed the nomination on the agenda for the next
session of North Carolina’s National
Register Advisory Committee, and
the nomination should be presented
at the June 9, 2005 committee meeting. If approved, the nomination will
go to North Carolina’s State Historic
Preservation Officer, who will formally nominate the school for listing in
the National Register. The state then
sends the nomination to the National
Register office in Washington, where
it will be reviewed and a decision
made concerning its listing. If all
goes as expected, the school could
be listed in the National Register by
the end of Summer, 2005. Special
kudos go to Tim Weikel, Harry
Bradley and our Alumni Association
for making this nomination a reality!
Alumni Spotlight …
Frank Nickell!
One of Grimsley High School’s most
notable alumni, a loyal and generous
supporter of the Alumni Association,
is Frank (Nick) T. Nickell, class of
‘65. Mr Nickell is President and
CEO of Kelso and Company, an
investment firm that specializes in
private companies. He is also on the
Board of Directors of Bear SYearns
and Co. Inc. and Blackrock, Inc.
Prior to joining Kelso in 1977, he
was a certified public accountant
in Raleigh, NC, having received his
B.S. in business administration and
accounting at the University of North
Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1970.
Mr Nickell enjoys golf, but it
is tournament bridge that has
consumed much of his leisure time.
He has won over a dozen National
Championships, and in 1995, 2000,
and 2003 was a member of the
United States National Team that
won the World Championship.
Grimsley
Ranked Tops
in Area!
Newsweek has just listed the
top public high schools in
Mr Nickell is married with two young
sons, six and eight years old. His
parents, as well as his brother David
(class of ‘67), still live in Greensboro.
“On a recent trip to Greensboro, I
took my six- and eight-year old sons
for a drive through the school, and
they were quite impressed. “Cool”
was the term they used to describe
it.” Mr Nickell relates that he has
very fond memories of his days at
Grimsley. “ In particular, I remember
Beth Walker and David Pultz, also
class of ’65.”
With his continuing commitment to
Grimsley, Frank Nickell is helping
to support the long history of
excellence at Grimsley which he is
such a big part of. He has joined
many other alumni and friends that
are working to insure an opportunity
for success and fond memories for
another generation of students.
America and Grimsley was
ranked the #1 high school in
our area! Our national rank of
67 was the highest among all
high schools in our area and
Grimsley was the only local
high school in the top 100,
a first for Guilford County
Schools! Congratulations to
the Grimsley administration,
faculty, staff and especially
our students who keep us at
the forefront of education!

Q&A With Our Alumni … Harry Bradley, ’77
What is your best memory of
Greensboro Grimsley Senior High
School?
My earliest memory, which is still
crystal clear, is from about 1965
or 1966 when I was about 6 years
old. I was in the back seat of my
family’s Chevy II station wagon riding
up Westover Terrace on the way to
eat at McDonald’s. I was looking
out the window and noticed
there were some imposing and
spooky looking buildings. I asked my
father what that place was and the
answer was Greensboro Senior High
School, where he had gone to school
and where I probably would go one
day.
thinking how nice it could be if
properly repaired.
Q
My next memory of Grimsley is from
attending a band concert in 1973
white still a student at Kiser Junior
High School. The concert was held
in the auditorium, which I saw that
evening for the first time. During a
break in the program, a student by
the name of Peter Byrd spoke and
he was raising money to restore
the badly damaged decorative
architectural paint scheme. After
the program was over, I made my
way down the right center aisle and
was amazed at what I saw. The room
had many visible white patches to
the plaster, no curtains on the upper
windows, decorative wrought iron
railings bent out of shape, and two
very large and rather frightening
looking murals high up on the wall
on either side of the stage. The room
was in rough shape, but I remember
My memories while actually
a student are numerous and
the three years went by like a
flash. I was not a highly visible
student nor active participant in
most typical school activities. The
one notable exception was my
involvement with the Drama
Department, then under the
direction of Mr. Michael Parrish. I
was not an actor, but there were
plenty of behind the scene things
to do. I enjoyed every moment. My
participation within this very diverse
group was my first real encounter in
meeting people with backgrounds
very different from my own.
to receive an award. I was a corecipient along with Caroline
Johnson of the Ronald Reed Loyalty
Award. Although I was not a very
public person, it was tremendously
satisfying to have my contribution
to Grimsley specifically and formally
recognized.
Who was your most inspiring
teacher while at Grimsley?
There were two - Miss Peggy Joyner
and Mr. Larry Saunders. Miss
Joyner taught me the grammatical
fundamentals of the English
language. In her classroom I
began to understand more about
the art, beauty and effectiveness of
language when written and spoken
properly. Mr. Saunders is solely
responsible for my understanding
of higher level math. He had
the wonderful ability to explain
mathematical concepts clearly and
concisely. They employed radically
different teaching methods, but
they were without a doubt the
best teachers I ever had from
kindergarten all the way through
graduate school.
A
&
I also spent much of my time
between regular class work
and homework informally trying
to find out everything I could about
the architecture of the many campus
buildings and the lengthy history
of the school. It was during these
years that I also decided to buy
some paint and small brushes so I
could add to and repair the unusual
architectural paint scheme in the
auditorium and lobby.
What was your most exciting
senior year activity?
Senior Awards Day. It marked the
culmination of almost everything I
enjoyed about being at Grimsley.
I was one of approximately 100
seniors who got to sit on stage
What drives you to stay involved
with Grimsley High School?
After some due reflection, I have
concluded that I feel strongly that
there is a unique and important
academic and architectural history of
GHS which needs to be documented
and preserved for future generations.

Fabulous Fall for Whirlie Sports!
to hold a lead on them the entire
season. The varsity ended the
season with 8 wins against 5 losses
and the JV team had a super 71-1 record. Coach Shuping was
certainly deserving of “Coach of the
Year”.
What a tremendous fall for the
Whirlies – without a doubt, the best
in over a decade! We felt that we had
an opportunity to be successful in
2004, but our kids really took it to the
next level. In fact, every fall sport at
Grimsley participated in post-season
competition!
It’s amazing what athletic success
does to energize a student body; it
carries over into so many aspects
of our school climate. Here’s a brief
overview of our student-athletes’
accomplishments this past fall:
Our Cross Country teams went to
the regional meet and the women’s
team finished second in the All
Guilford County meet. Our women’s
Tennis team finished second to
Page (the eventual state champion)
and advanced to the second round
of the state team tournament. The
women’s Golf team finished third
in the conference but exceeded all
expectations to finish sixth in the
regional and qualified a full team for
the state tournament.
The men’s Soccer squad worked
throughout the season to find its
best team chemistry and finished
fourth in the league. But when it
counted, Coach Herk DeGraw
found the right combination and the
kids played their best of the year
advancing to the third round in the
state playoffs. Our Volleyball team
under the direction of Coach Sue
Leonard matured into a 20-5 squad,
and was the only team in the league
to defeat everyone at least once.
They advanced to the state playoffs
for the first time in years, losing to
the defending state champion after
giving them a very tough match.
Without a doubt, the biggest surprise
was the success of Coach Todd
Shuping’s Football team. Highlights
were a victory over Page (only
the third since 1971), a tie for the
conference championship, and
advancing to the second round of
the state playoffs for the first time
since 1991. Losing to eventual state
champion Charlotte Independence,
the Whirlies were the only team
www.whirlies.com
Our successes also continued
through the winter season. Our
men’s Swimming team was
conference champion, our women’s
Swimming team finished second in
the league, but rose up to win the
regional for the second consecutive
year. Our Basketball teams were very
competitive, and the women’s team
has a bunch of young kids who can
really play. There is optimism about
the spring as well. The Soccer team
is the defending state champion,
the Golf team looks to win its fourth
consecutive regional and advance
to their fifth consecutive state
tournament, and new coaches in
Baseball and Track bring high hopes.
Our Lacrosse programs are going
strong and the Softball team should
be the best in years. All in all, it’s a
great time for a student-athlete to
play for Grimsley and I hope that
you can come out to see these kids
represent your school and make
you proud. Thanks for your support
of our Alumni Association and of
Grimsley High School sports!
