As we leave our latest home of 27 years, the Breakfast Drive alumni join those of the other three buildings as graduates who can’t go home. Over the past few months, I have been struck by the number of graduates who have come back to have one last look at the School they attended. I have seen a deep emotional response to a place with little architectural significance and I have come to see again that it’s not the building that we’re attached to, but it’s the place where we grew up. Catholic Central has never been about the place, but about the brotherhood. Having said that, you cannot imagine the excitement about the move to the fifth Catholic Central home. Every time I look at it, I realize that it’s about time that the facilities matched the quality of the experience. We have so many people to thank, some who have made extraordinary sacrifices to make the new CC a reality. One, John Argenta, Class of ’58 and architect of the new CC, has given us something nearly sacred, a building that matches the philosophy behind Catholic Central. One of the Alumni Association’s most successful recent moves has been to provide alumni for the School’s career exploration program. It has been amazing to see the connection between our present students and the returning alumni who have described their life’s work. Unlike previous career presenters, these men have shared the CC experience and the present students connect with them in a way we did not see before. These alumni come into the School and it’s like they never left. You would think they had come home. So those who declared that you can’t come home are wrong. Even though the building is different, when you visit us at 27225 Wixom Road, you will be coming home. The whole CC experience – the goodness, discipline, knowledge, the devotion to Mary, Alma Mater, the intense academic striving, the cheering for the Shamrock teams – all of it has moved down the road to our new home. Welcome home! “We have Sincerely in Christ, so many people to thank, some who have made Fr. Richard Ranalletti, C.S.B. Principal extraordinary sacrifices to make the new CC a reality.” 2 C H AT T E R B O X a teacher and an administrator for the Detroit Public Schools and Redford Union District. P R O F I L E Architect Raises The Roof For CC By Al Omilian ’05 F “When the Basilians started talking about the idea of a new Campus, I decided it was payback time. Time to give back to CC for all they had given me in life and be a part of the realization of the dream of a permanent home for CC,” he added. rom the new athletic facilities complete with pressbox and a concession stand to the spacious chapel adorned with stained glass, CC’s new home is best characterized by its fine architecture, much of which honors the sacred traditions of our School and Mary, Alma Mater. This “dream” was to design a modern, complete Campus that would provide young men with an education in the Basilian tradition of “goodness, discipline and knowledge” without, as Mr. Argenta said, “superfluous frills or going over budget.” But who is the architect, and how was he able to pay tribute to CC’s past glory while physically bringing it into a new era of greatness? C.C. PROFILE Such a task could only be accomplished by a Shamrock himself. Enter John Argenta ’58. This was very important because the entire project was funded by gifts and donations “painstakingly” raised by Fr. Elmer. Mr. Argenta is the driving force behind the new building’s features, and as with other alumni, CC tradition runs in his family. Mr. Argenta is confident these goals have been accomplished: “For the first time, “My brothers, nephews, and son all CC will have its own outdoor athletic Argenta incorporated stained glass attended CC. The Basilians were always complex with bleachers, pressbox, salvaged from the now-demolished Outer there at important points in my life Drive Chapel into the new CC Chapel. lights, track, baseball and practice through the years,” he said. fields, and a concession stand. No longer will CC have to search for a place to play games.” Mr. Argenta has been involved in designing many educational buildings throughout his architectural career and Mr. Argenta is particularly proud of the new Chapel, was eager to take on this which will resonate especially with alumni who graduated massive project. from the Outer Drive location. “We have been able to reconstruct the large stained glass window with stained glass salvaged from the now demolished Outer Drive Chapel. Many alumni will remember the window of the Risen Christ from their time spent in prayer there before and after exams,” he said. Mr. Argenta’s experience at CC shaped who he is mentally and spiritually, and he is glad to give back to his Alma Mater that gave him so much. “When the Basilians “Experiencing the tradition of excellence and the Basilian tradition at CC gave me the basis and fundamentals to pursue successfully a college education, an architectural career and a family,” said Mr. Argenta. “CC was a definite factor in getting me where I am today.” ■ started talking about the idea of a new Campus, I decided it This article also appears in the “Spectrum,” the official School newspaper of Catholic Central. Published 4-5 times each year, the “Spectrum” can also be viewed online at www.catholiccentral.net. was payback time.” 6 A L U M N I A S S O C I AT I O N 25th Annual Athletic & Alumni Golf Outing: “Upholding Athletic Excellence” T A special “thank you” is extended to all our sponsors, especially Mike Stanford at Varsity Ford and Tony Mooter ’61. Furthermore, the event would not have been such a success without the efforts of Bob Santello ’58, the alumni moms, the maintenance staff, and the athletic and alumni/development staff who all jumped in to make this great event happen. ■ ALUMNI hanks to the 300-plus alumni, family and friends of CC who participated in the 25th Annual Golf Outing on May 6, at Bay Pointe Golf Club and Links at Pinewood Golf Course. A great day of golf was followed by dinner and a short program at Bay Pointe. Seeing old friends, making new ones – and telling stories as long as the drives off the tee – all helped in making this day and evening so enjoyable for those who attended. Over $30,000 was raised for the Athletic Department, which will help offset yearly costs. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 A few weeks before the first day of the new Catholic Central High School on August 15, the “Aluminator” talked with the School’s President, Fr. Richard Elmer ’46, about the extensive planning required for the new School. The following are excerpts from that discussion. By Nick Sharkey ALUM As someone who began a 63-year association with Catholic Central as a Freshman in 1942, what does the new School mean to you personally? Fr. E Fr. E I’m not emotional about the opening of the new School. I’m satisfied, but not emotional. That’s because I am only an instrument in the hands of God. It’s Providential how the new School has come together. It’s just now hit me that the new School building is really going to open. It’s due to the work of many other people; I was only the catalyst who got things going. ALUM What came next? Fr. E ALUM You often talk about the Catholic Central family. What does that mean to you? Fr. E The feeling of CC family really solidified within me when I was Principal (1967-1973). We are like a family – mothers, dads, alumni, students, faculty, Basilian fathers – all working together. We’re one body with many members. I went to the CC School Board and told them what I wanted to do. They unanimously agreed that I should look into it. In March of 1998, I formed a team to make a long-range Strategic Plan for the School. This team was made up of mostly alumni and a few Basilians. For the next few months, the team met for three hours in the morning a couple of times a month. We talked about the needs of the School and how we could meet those needs. We looked at demographic studies and the condition of the present School building. We talked to the Superior General of the Basilian order to get his blessing. We studied the projected Basilian presence at our School in the future. And we talked about how we could raise the required money for the project. ALUM When did you decide Catholic Central needed a new high school? Fr. E As I thought about the changing needs of Catholic Central, I prayed and asked, “Is this the right thing to do, Lord?” My answer from Him was “Yes.” When I returned to CC in 1990, I began to learn how the School had changed after I left in the 1970s (when the school was on Outer Drive). The Breakfast Drive building was always intended to be a temporary site. The School building looked tired. It was built to be a junior high school, not a senior high. It was smaller than what we needed. An Action Plan was developed from this Strategic Plan. Four committees were formed. One talked to representatives of the Archdiocese of Detroit and to the Diocese of Lansing. The second looked at our present facilities to make sure we needed a new building. The third looked for land. The fourth searched for a fund-raising consultant. I then looked at the students. More and more lived in the western area. The School has a history of going where our students live. That’s why we moved from Outer Drive to Breakfast Drive. After that, the School Board approved the project. We then conducted a feasibility study to see if we could raise the money needed. ALUM What prompted you to begin working on a new School building? 16 Other important contributors are: George W. Auch, the construction manager; Michael Potts, the superintendent on the job; Greg Kreutzer, the owner’s representative; John Ronayne ’64, our School Attorney; and Dick Clark, former mayor of Novi. Many other people, too numerous to name here, have made significant contributions. ALUM How is the new School being financed? Fr. E Pat Nesbitt ’62 The land was donated through the generosity of Frank and Colleen Pellerito. We raised $25 million in donations from alumni Frank and Colleen and friends, including Pellerito $10 million donated by Pat Nesbitt ’62. And we sold the land at the present School site for $5 million. ALUM What has been your most pleasant experience in this long, 15-year process? Fr. E When we started, we thought we needed $34 million. But we began construction at the perfect time. Because of an economic slowdown, construction people were hungry for work. We got estimates that were below what we expected. It now looks like the total cost of the new building site will be $30 million. Frank couldn’t attend one meeting because he was experiencing dizzy spells. The medical people discovered a blockage in the vein between Frank’s heart and his brain, and they scheduled surgery for him. Just before they performed the surgery, they did a scan and found out the blockage had disappeared. ALUM How many people contributed to the new School? Fr. E The most emotional and significant experience for me was the miracle of Frank and Colleen Pellerito. Frank and I were in negotiations for him to donate the land as a tax write-off. There were many good reasons for Frank to not do that. I’d estimate that over 2,000 people have financially contributed, which is very remarkable. I want to especially mention our architect, John Argenta ’58. He has saved us significant amounts of money through his outstanding efforts. He came up with a remarkable design on a difficult piece of land because of the wetlands on the site. The doctors could not explain what had happened. It was a miracle! I said in prayer, “Thank you, Lord.” After that, negotiations went smoothly. Photos by Mike Rossi except top photo, which is courtesy of John Salter. 17 ☞ ALUM Are more donations needed? Fr. E Yes. To get our money upfront to start building, we had to issue bonds that necessitate us raising another $4-5 million. Although I’m pleased that about 2,000 alumni have donated already, that’s only about 20% of our approximately 10,000-plus alumni. I hope many more alumni will donate once they see our beautiful new School. All alumni, not just those who have made contributions, will be invited to the School’s dedication on Sept. 11. These alums will get a chance to see for themselves this marvelous School. I hope they will always consider it “home” because it is. ALUM Of all the School’s new features, which means the most to you? Fr. E My pride and joy is the Chapel. When you walk in the main entrance and look down the corridor, you’ll see the Chapel with its glass doors. You can look through these doors and see the tabernacle. What began as a conversation I had with the Lord ended up as a high school with a Chapel at its center. Nothing makes me happier than that. ■ 18 A L U M N I A S S O C I AT I O N 14200 Breakfast Drive Closing Mass: Goodness And The CC Spirit O Fr. Kenneth Decker, followed by Fr. Numerous alumni from the ’80s have written about how their month in France was a life-changing experience for them; many still have contact with their exchange families after nearly 20 years. Fr.
